Jessica Payne has done it again! The Good Doctor is a twisty thriller that will keep you rearranging pieces of the puzzle trying to figure out what’s next. It’s impossible to put down. I stayed up hours past bedtime, then woke up the next morning unable to do anything else until I finished the story. I was finished in less than 24 hours with this one.
I loved that this story leaned into the medical world. As a nurse myself it felt very real, with a great twist for thriller fiction.
You do not want to miss this book!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this advanced copy!
I loved this one. Utterly compulsive (I expect no less from Jessica Payne) and constant twists to keep you reading at any available opportunity!
Some of the scenes literally made me gasp, they were suspenseful, dramatic and shocking.
I did suspect some of the ending, but it hasn't detracted from the level of entertainment this book provided me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm already looking forward to the next book!
After spending a few years moving from nursing job to nursing job, Nurse Practitioner Chloe and fiance Elton decide to move to Portland. They have bought a house and have jobs. On her first morning she is shocked to find the doctor she is working with is her ex husband who she left due to events she would rather forget. He could destroy her new life. However with all they have invested in the move she decides to sick it out. But why do more of Jameson's patients die than others. The story is told through Chloe and Jameson's point of view. To be honest I struggled to find either of them very plausible. Jameson seemed to me both controlling and a bit pathetic. Chloe switched from being a shrinking violet to foolhardy.
I know I am probably in a minority here but for me this book did not live up to expectations. The premise was good but failed on the characters, which, for me are the most important part. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read and review this book.
After witnessing your ex husbands treatment of your brother you leave him and that life behind. You're now happily engaged, living in your dream home and have been offered the perfect career. It's your first day in the ICU at Portland General and shock, horror when you arrive you find yourself working alongside Jameson, the ex husband.
Man, I thought I'd cracked it and then Payne threw in another twist that blasted my theory apart. What a cracking read The Good Doctor turned out to be, fast paced, compulsive and absolutely gripping. The chapters were relatively short, so I flew through the book in an afternoon.
This is the third of Payne's books I've read and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
The Good Doctor is a brilliant psychological thriller that’s filled with suspense and tension. So much so that by the time I had finished reading it my nerves were frayed ! As soon as I began reading this book I just knew it was going to be a really good read and it certainly was that. All my theories of what was going on proved to be incorrect but as I always say that’s the sign of a good author if I can’t predict the outcome. So if you enjoy psychological thrillers and especially those with a medical background then I wholeheartedly recommend this book. 4⭐️
WOW! WOW! WOW! This was my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. Great psychological thriller about a nurse who is married at one time to a doctor. She starts noticing an increase in deaths in her unit and begins investigating. So many twist and turns! I don’t want to give away any spoilers. Great character development and the story ends with ALL the questions answered. Author did a great job of depicting healthcare and nursing realistically
Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC
Will recommend this to anyone looking for a thriller.
I requested this book as i was drawn in by the cover and thought it looked interesting.
Twists that you don't see coming, What a great roller-coaster ride of a thriller
Jessica Payne does it again! She is the queen of medical thrillers, i love all her books and they just keep getting better and better.
Highly recommended to everyone
Jess Payne does it again! She is the queen of medical thrillers involving bad ass women who don’t know they’re bad asses! Well written and incredibly entertaining. It’s clear by reading that she’s somehow involved in the medical field, but still managed to make it easy for laypeople to read. I’m always excited when Jess has another upcoming book and this was no exception!
Huge thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sending me this ARC for review! All of my reviews are given honestly!
I just finished The Good Doctor by Jessica Payne @jessicapaynewriter and here is my review!
Chloe finally feels like her life is on track. Her fiance Elton is a dream come true. They just bought a house and she starts a new job.
Everything is perfect until she sees him. Jameson is here… Her ex husband. A man she fled from years ago. She will never forget that day.. The day her brother died and the roles they both played in it.
The day when everything changed and she saw Jameson for who he really was.
He holds all the cards now and he has many questions he wants answered and he isn't going to take no for an answer…..
This book!! GUHHHHH. This book had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. It’s one of those thrillers that run you up and down on both sides and shake you like a can of whipped cream. So much to unpack here! The book is told from Chloe and Jamesons POV and it is so well done! You never quite know what’s what until the end and I can honestly tell you, I had no idea who it was at all!! Love books that keep you right on your toes the whole time!
Loved the plot, I am a huge Greys anatomy fan so I was already excited for this book and being one of Jessica’s fans already, my expectations were through the roof! I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t say too much but I really loved all the twists and turns in this one.
You could literally feel the fear Chloe was feeling the entire time. It climbed slowly up the back of my neck and my heart was pounding like a drum! It was tangible and delicious, the kind of book I didn’t want to end but I had to know how it was going to end.
If you love a solid psychological thriller that will have you turning pages faster than a tornado, then this has to be next on your list!
Thank you @netgalley and @bookouture for my gifted copy! OUT NOW!! RUNNNNNN haha

A slow start to this book but then the twists start coming and it becomes a gripping read.
Many thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read this ARC
A mystery, medical, and Psychological thriller!!! This book has everything that I love combined into one. Please be sure to check thy trigger warnings. The Good Doctor by Jessica Payne had me hooked from the get go. It's a bit of a slow burn at first but hallways through it really starts moving. Chloe is a newly nurse practioner starting out with fresh beginnings with a new place, new job and even a new husband, so imagine her surprise when she walks in her new job and sees her ex-husband. Think of this book as a medical TV drama but with murder. I thought about giving this 5 stars but rounded down because early on, I figured it the ending but it was still a phenomenal book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
The latest book by Jessica Payne is full of surprise twists that had me turning page after page. In fact, this book was another stunning and shocking one-sitting read.
The Good Doctor includes a sensitive subject with regard to Chloe Woods’ ex-husband and his medical practices. Chloe not only had successfully left him and divorced him, she has a rewarding job as a nurse practitioner and a loving partner, and is in fact now engaged. Taking on her newest job, including buying a new home, Chloe shockingly learns that she will working alongside her ex.
Chloe is plagued with guilt and regret from actions that occurred while she was still married, and seeing her ex-husband daily brings those difficult feelings front and center. One of her newest responsibilities is collating medical records that pertain to numerous patient deaths. Chloe’s problems are beginning all over again.
Just when I thought I knew was happening, I found myself surprised and this was more than once. Definitely looking forward to Jessica Payne’s next book.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Well this was a twisting plot throughout. Who should she trust? The premise of the Dr who helps patients to die and the high rates of deaths in the ICU some of them unexpectedly early and a murder or two keeps the heart racing. Well written and good paced thriller.
The Good Doctor by Jessica Payne has everything a person could want in a psych thriller.
Compelling characters? Check.
Realistic plot? Check.
Twists and turns? Definitely check.
Jaw-dropping surprise(s)? Check, check, CHECK.
I think one of the reasons I liked this book had to do with the setting. So many psych thrillers are domestic or center around family. This one is largely set with doctors in a hospital (the title is a clue).
Chloe and her fiancé, Elton, are starting a new life in Portland. She’s got a new job, they have a great house, and everything is supposed to be great.
Until she realizes that her ex-husband, Jameson, is her new co-worker. And boy, do they have a history.
What follows is a solid story where the reader gets the background between Chloe and Jameson, as well as how they deal with their current situation.
The psych thriller aspect centers around the very sensitive subject of “right-to-die” and doctor assistance. So, be forewarned that there are parts that are a little difficult to read.
I really liked how twisty this book was. Jameson and Chloe have their own issues, but they try to find a balance, even though they also find that maybe their split was in error.
I’m not going to give anything else away. But the last third of the book? Hold on to your seats because the author pulls out all the stops. And when you think you have it figured out, you don’t.
The Good Doctor reminded me a little of the TV show Scrubs – if that show had been a psych thriller with some literal killer twists. Jessica Payne has written an excellent story and I can’t wait for the next one.
Chloe, a nurse, eagerly start a new job adventure in an unfamiliar city alongside her fiancé Elton. Her excitement takes an unexpected turn when on her first day, she discovers that her ex-husband Jameson, a doctor, also works at the same place. To make matters more complicated, she is assigned to work closely with him.
The unfolding of this story is brimming with unforeseen twists that left me utterly astounded! I adore when a book cleverly surprises and shocks me, while still maintaining a logical and cohesive narrative. The masterful implementation of dual points of view allows us to delve into the intricacies of a complex relationship and the aftermath of a separation. Each layer is meticulously revealed as the book progresses, creating a truly captivating reading experience. This is definitely a must-have addition for your TBR shelf!
Thank you to Bookouture & NetGalley for allowing me to read this book
Wow! I really enjoyed this one! I'm a big Jessica Payne fan and this book didn't disappoint! The flow was seamless, I enjoyed the twists, and although I predicted a few of them, the writing style and the characters kept me engaged! Highly recommend!
🤩 First off, Happy Publication Week to The Good Doctor 🤩
I finally have everything I’ve ever wanted: a career saving lives, my dream home among the pines, and my caring fiancé, Elton. He doesn’t know about my past. And I’ll do anything to keep it that way…
But when I walk in on my first day, I see my ex-husband Jameson. His familiar broad shoulders are unmistakable in his white doctor’s coat. The shock knocks the air from my lungs.
As above, Jessica Payne is an author I’ll read anything from. Her books are always highly entertaining and will leave you floored.
A wonderful medical drama/thriller with a serial killer. It’s a roller coaster of twists and turns, that had me flying through the book in one sitting.
Many thanks to @netgalley @bookouture and @jessicapayne for an ARC.
Out now! 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Good Doctor is about Chloe a nurse practitioner who recently moved to Portland with her fiancé. Elton and Chloe are both nurses, but she recently found out she was assigned to work side-by-side with her ex-husband. Jameson is a doctor who is known for his physician-assisted suicide. Three years ago Chloe witnessed something that had her questioning her husband ethics as a doctor. She ran and sent a letter stating she wanted a divorce. She thought she moved far enough away to leave her past behind. Here they are working together at the same hospital in Portland.
…
Jessica Payne is a new to me author. I happened across her book on Netgalley and after reading the premise decided this was right up my alley. I’m a sucker for psychological thrillers. Some have compared her work to Freida McFadden’s, but I don’t get that same vibe.
…
For me this read like a cozy mystery romance. There were some dark funny moments and some moments of fear. This story takes place in a hospital with Chloe playing the role of amateur detective. She has her mind set on this theory that Jameson is killing his patients. Of course, Chloe has filled her head with all kinds of ideas given she watches medical serial killer shows on Netflix so she thinks she knows a thing or two about medical killers.
…
I find with these types of tropes, the ones with a hidden secret, take an extreme amount of time to unlock the secret. It feels like the story gets put on hold meandering through nonessential storyline. The majority of the book is spent carefully avoiding exposing the deep secret. The story comes alive at the tale end of the book.
Author Jessica Payne once again delivers a solid, past-paced psychological thriller. This time, the setting is in a hospital. A lot of patients are dying, but who is the killer? With short chapters and two narrators, the story keeps the reader’s attention throughout.
I was able to figure some things out early on, but it did not deter my enjoyment of the novel. If you haven’t read a novel by Jessica Payne yet, you are missing out!
Thank you to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an eARC of #TheGoodDoctor by #JessicaPayne - 4 stars
A medical thriller with a possible psychopath killer who could be an actual doctor or a nurse in a hospital setting? Yes, please!!!! This book grabbed me from the very page and I read it so fast because I could not put it down. It’s publication day for The Good Doctor and I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an advance copy. I loved it and highly recommend it to all you thriller fans!
