This book was a fun, twisty thriller! Grey’s Anatomy with murder is the perfect way to describe it-a medical serial killer and nothing is as it seems. I enjoyed the dual POV and when the suspense picked up it didn’t slow down. Overall a fun, intense thriller I definitely recommend.
After everything that happened with her ex husband Dr Jameson Smith, Chloe is looking forward to moving on with her life with her fiance Elton, a man who is kind and caring. After both working as travelling nurses, they have decided to move from Seattle to Portland and settle down in permanent roles at the general hospital. Excited to start her new nurse practitioner role she arrives on her first day only to discover she will be working with Jameson and the shock knocks her for six. Only they know what happened all those years ago and what he is capable of, she is desperate for it to stay that way and will do everything she can to stop him ruining her now perfect life.
The Good Doctor is a fast paced medical thriller told from the perspectives of both Chloe and Jameson, across a dual timeline alternating between now and then. It's a well crafted premise that hooked me in from the first page and Payne's career as a nurse really shines through with her knowledge and expertise of all things medical, adding to the authenticity of the story. I changed my mind so many times through this book about who the perpetrator was and, even though I finally guessed, it did not affect my enjoyment of it in any way. As with her previous two books, this one captivated me and I can't wait to see what she has to offer us next, I highly recommend this author.
I'd like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
“The Good Doctor” by Jessica Payne was a gripping psychological thriller. The story kept you guessing until the very end.
Chloe and Elton have a great life together. They finally decide to settle down and start their life together. The only problem with this plan is that Chloe is thrown into working with her ex-husband Jameson. As Chloe navigates working with her Jameson and Elton she notices that there is a higher number of deaths in the hospital. Chloe investigates what is happening putting her life on the line.
This story is highly captivating and makes you want to keep reading.
History with a Mystery
Chloe, a nurse, eagerly start a new job adventure in an unfamiliar city alongside her fiancé Elton. Her excitement takes an unexpected turn when on her first day, she discovers that her ex-husband Jameson, a doctor, also works at the same place. To make matters more complicated, she is assigned to work closely with him.
The unfolding of this story is brimming with unforeseen twists that left me utterly astounded! I adore when a book cleverly surprises and shocks me, while still maintaining a logical and cohesive narrative. The masterful implementation of dual points of view allows us to delve into the intricacies of a complex relationship and the aftermath of a separation. Each layer is meticulously revealed as the book progresses, creating a truly captivating reading experience. This is definitely a must-have addition for your TBR shelf!
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Jessica Payne for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I have mixed feelings about this thriller.
There's a lot to like: a relatable main character, a medical environment that feels authentic and great suspense regarding the true intentions of the characters.
However, the story is extremely slow paced for the first... well, for 80% of the book. I felt absent-minded, skipping paragraphs in order to move faster. Only the last 40 pages or so move the plot forward exponentially and expose the truth and provide real answers.
The final twist surprised me, hence the three star rating.

MY REVIEW::
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
This book has been described as "Grey Anatomy with murder" and I'd definitely agree. It more follows a few doctors and not as much about the patients like Grey's does, but its about cracking this mystery around multiple murders when you swear you know who did it. But, do you confront that person and possibly be next? Or, do you get as far away as possible to save yourself and your loved ones?
Now we're talking big dilema here!
As you go farther into the book, the more twisted it gets into background and personal stories intertwining the characters and making you second guess who ACTUALLY is the killer.
Toward the end, i had a good hunch who the killer would end up being, since it wasn't going to be the obvious choice, but it was still an amazingly addicting story.

This book was a 4 star psychological thriller. It kept me engaged and I read it in a day. I felt like I didn’t see the end coming which most often with these types of books that is the case. I will read more by this author.
This was a good thriller that made me keep changing my mind over who I thought was the killer. Fans of suspense will surely like this one!
I recently had the pleasure of engaging in a buddy reading of a book that, while somewhat predictable, managed to captivate my attention with its mysterious motive and intriguing main character. The story had a medical backdrop, which is a theme I personally enjoy, earning it a solid 4 stars in my book.
The main character, despite her confusion, was the heart and soul of the narrative. Her actions and choices were unconventional and divergent from what I would expect, but it was precisely this unpredictability that made her so fascinating. The author did a commendable job of developing a character who stands out from the crowd, leaving the reader both perplexed and invested in her journey.
What intrigued me the most was the secret motive driving the main character's actions. While the overall story may have had a predictable trajectory, this hidden motive added an element of mystery that kept me engaged. The gradual revelation of the character's true intentions and the subsequent exploration of the medical background brought depth and complexity to the narrative, making it a truly enjoyable read.
The book's incorporation of a medical theme was a significant highlight for me. As a fan of stories with medical elements, I appreciated the author's attention to detail and their ability to seamlessly integrate medical knowledge into the plot. This aspect added an extra layer of authenticity and enriched the overall reading experience.
While the story may not have been entirely surprising, the enigmatic main character, along with the compelling medical backdrop, ensured that it stood out from similar narratives. For its ability to captivate and its unique blend of predictability and mystery, I would confidently award this book 4 stars. If you're a fan of stories that delve into the complexities of a confused protagonist and appreciate a medical twist, this book will surely be an engaging and satisfying read.
This book has been a absolutely fantastic thriller!! The book has definitely been one of the best books I've read in a long time!! Definitely made me giddy with suspense!! You'll want to add this to your beach read this summer!!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC! This book was so captivating one world WOW! It was a fast paced and kept me guessing throughout a perfect book for psychological thrillers fans alike, from the very first page I drawn and couldn’t put the book down it was so good I read it in a day! The characters were likeable also.
Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book and all the plot twists that it presented!
Jessica is absolutely incredible. This is the third book I read from her and it DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!!! I am leaving a much more detailed review on Instagram, but for now know that she grabs you in and doesn’t let go until the end. A great medical thriller with grey anatomy vibes. She writes in my favorite genre and I know she’ll become a NYT best seller.
This book actually stands out of the crowds due to its different and engrossing plot. I must say, the story gripped me from the start. The writing flow of the author helps to keep up with the books and not boring with the unnecessary details. Perfect for mystery lovers out there !!!
So, the Chole, a nurse finds out her husband, Dr. Jameson is called Doctor Death because he helps patients to choose to die and getting free from their pain. But, how was it possible that 80 % of patients want to die? How can 80% of Jameson's patients are dead? Is he a medical serial killer?
Even though Chole starts a new life with Elton. How did she get job where Jameson works?
Authority makes it very difficult for Chole to be on Jameson's team in her new hospital.
But again, patients are dying!
Chole sets on the mission to find the medical serial killer.
The story goes with lots of twists and turns, and unpredictable at all that who can be the killer, this is the only thing I enjoy in the mystery book, and this book kept me hooked till the end.
Everyone will enjoy this perfect mystery book.
5/5
Thoughts~
As someone who watches the older seasons of Grey’s Anatomy on repeat, I was excited to read a story where doctors are the main characters. It has been a long time since I have picked up a medical thriller so I was ready for it. The first half of this book flew by with clear tension between main characters Chloe and Jameson. I enjoyed the alternating chapters that flashback to when these two first met, and how they fell in love. In present time Chloe is engaged to a new man.
I thought I had it all figured out, and then out of nowhere my theory fell apart and I was shocked! If you enjoy fast paced medical thrillers then look no further!

Three years ago, Chloe managed to escape her ex - a successful doctor named Jameson. He wasn’t the man she thought he was and she knew she had to flee. Present day, she has moved on and is engaged to a wonderful man and has been offered the job of her dreams. When she starts it, she is horrified to discover it is a job working directly with Jameson. How did this job really come about? And are she, and their patients, still in danger?
PROS and CONS:
A lot of paranoia and second guessing goes on with this heroine (and she’s not the best planner either). Is Jameson a cold blooded killer or not? Is Chloe in danger or not? Who can she trust? Although there was not a great deal of suspense to this one, it was interesting to read what Chloe and Jameson were going to get up to next.
READ IT?
If you’re looking for…a lightning quick read, and you’re a fan of medical mysteries - then this one’s for you!
3.5 Stars
Ooh, this was sooo good! Couldn't read fast enough to find out what was really going on and who the killer was! Very well done psychological thriller with great characters, lots of intrigue and sadly, loss. A definite must-read!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!

The Good Doctor follows Chloe Woods, who has everything she ever wanted - a caring fiancé, a dream home and her dream job. And most importantly, her fiancé doesn’t know about what she did in the past. But when on the first day of her job she comes face-to-face with that past, she must do everything to save her new life and others around her…
𝑴𝒚 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔
To start with, the plot was a little spoiled for me by the trigger warning at the start. It made me lose that thrill of reading this book but it changed as I got the know more about the mysterious life of Chloe Woods.
The dual POVs - Chloe and Jameson’s, kept the plot engaging and interesting. As we move forward, the chaos in Chloe’s life kept me wondering what is going on. This is what I like about the author, there was not a moment I lost interest in the plot even if it was slow-paced..
But soon, the plot started to become clear and it felt like there was unnecessary distraction and confusion was added just to get to the point.. The endgame was predictable and very early in the plot too, so that’s a disappointment for me!
Moreover, I felt like there was more focus on the romance angle than the mystery/suspense. This aspect took a large part of the plot keeping the mystery aside, which felt a bit disorienting. But boy do I love the romance angle in this one coz Jameson was swoon-worthy!
And the relationship development in this was immense.. The way it progressed added so much depth and kept me hooked.. Plus, I like how the author has addressed a controversial topic weaving a psychological thriller around it and at the same time bringing awareness to it.
𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏
Overall, this was a slow-paced captivating mystery/suspense that became predictable pretty soon. With its chaotic plot and interesting sequence of events, this book was an entertaining read nonetheless.
P.S. This is what happens when you listen to too many true crime podcasts, Chloe😅

From my blog: Always With a Book
This is Jessica Payne’s third book and the second one I’ve read. I really enjoyed the first one, her debut novel, Make Me Disappear, and now after devouring this one, I am adding her to my list of auto-read authors and putting her second book, The Lucky One, on my tbr!
I love a good medical thriller and when I saw that this one was being described as “Grey’s Anatomy with murder” I knew it was the book for me! And let me just say, it totally delivered. Right from the start I was drawn into this story, and loved how dark and twisted it was, as well as how full of misdirection it was. It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I thought I knew who the guilty person was but then about halfway through, things take a turn and I was left stumped!
Having the story told from dual points of view was such a great choice as it allows us to see both sides of a very complicated relationship and really kept me guessing as to who could be trusted. I also loved that the story moves back and forth in time, filling in the past, giving us crucial backstory on all our characters.
While this is a murder mystery if you will, it also tackles a controversial topic, one that is rather a grey area and I loved that Jessica Payne decided to go there. There is a content-warning at the beginning of the book if you aren’t sure, but I feel like it is these types of books that I love reading because it allows us as readers to question how we would handle things, to question our stand on these types of issues.
I loved this book and flew through it. It’s an addictive read and the twists and turns it takes along with the short chapters just beg you to keep reading. I definitely recommend this one if you like medical thrillers!
The mystery wasn’t too hard to guess and I wanted a little more suspense as well as an explanation as to why. However, I was invested in the characters and really enjoyed the romantic angle of this book!
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books from this author.
Loved the tension in this book. For a while I kept thinking what in the world is really going on? Great story!
