Cute Paranormal romance from Meg Cabot!
Story follows Jess, a cottage witch who owns a boutique in town. Everything is flipped when witch Derrick shows up to town claiming she has to help save the town.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc
Very cute story. Loved Jennifer and her teenage witch self and grown up witch self. Derrick was a little mysterious, but a good hero. Loved the surprise at the end.
(4/5 stars) Meg Cabot has been an icon ever since I read her Princess Diaries series (yes, *that* Princess Diaries), and this was such a fun fall read! I read it while baking pumpkin muffins and listening to a Cozy Fall Instrumentals playlist on Spotify, which set the perfect mood for this novel. The plot was engaging and the characters were delightful (especially the side characters); this would be a perfect read for a fall day cozied up in a comfy chair with a mug of cider. Hoping for more stories from West Harbor!
DNF at 25%. I was having trouble connecting to these characters and it was feeling a little too YA to be about a 30ish year old romance. The writing was disorganized and not engaging.
I stopped shortly after “I’d have known her anywhere and not just because Derrick had given me her photo and she was the only African American girl in glasses under the dome.” It gave off “diversity for the sake of checking off a box” vibes and didn’t sit right with me. I couldn’t focus on the story any more after that.
I don't read too many books where both the H and h are witches so I did enjoy that part. This is definitely a good book to read if you're looking for an easy and fun read. All the characters in this small town were interesting and I hope we see more of them except of course for Rosalie. I was a little disappointed at the ending but just because I wanted it to be more.
This was a charming. It was a nice, cozy read that is perfect to read in the fall. The writing was excellent as always from Meg Cabot.
The plot was interesting, but I do think the story could have been fleshed out more with a bit more detail and back story. As it is though, this is a solid 3-3.5 stars.
I loved the title, I loved the town, I just didn’t love this story as much as I wanted to. Everything felt so rushed. I liked the beginning of the book with the mystery and intrigue that was brought by Derrick and not knowing where he was from but over time, I got tired of always being left in the dark despite getting chapters from his point of view. I liked Jess but felt like she was the weakest character in the book despite being the FMC. I felt like her friends were more thought out and even Esther and Gabby had more emotion and range than Jess. I also felt like the ending resolution felt forced and different than the rest of the book. Why would Derrick, who just spent the night at his half brothers, proceed to physically fight him while Esther saves the town with a couple sentences about maybe making progress on clearing her ancestors names? I also felt like the timeline jumped around too much and could have benefited from having a disclaimer at the top of each chapter with a date or some other marker to help show the passage of time. Overall, an okay read but left a lot to be desired.
Adored this book, A quick read, loved the romance but wish it had more. I can't wait to read the 2nd book.
This paranormal romance had me hooked from the get-go. Imagine a plus-size witch named Jessica Gold, banned from the World Council of Witches for a love spell gone wrong in her teen years. Then, out of the blue, a mysterious hottie named Derrick appears, claiming she's the Chosen One to save her village from a supernatural threat. The story switches between Jessica's high school days and her current adventure, and it's a wild ride. I loved Jessica's journey of self-acceptance and her struggle to fit into the witchy world. The characters are fantastic, especially the teenage witch queen, Esther, a total firecracker. The romance is sweet, and the small-town New England setting adds charm. While it could've used a bit more sizzle, the enchanting vibe makes it a must-read for Meg Cabot fans and anyone into paranormal romance.
This was a really fun first book in the new Witches of West Harbor series by fan favorite Meg Cabot! I loved the small town, Buffy vibes that sees a 'cottage' witch, Jessica Gold being told by motorcycle-riding, new to town Derrick Winters, a World Council of Witches member, that she's the "Chosen One," and needs to help find and nurture another baby witch or the world will end.
Full of a great cast of secondary characters, excerpts from an old grimoire, MCs with fantastic chemistry and perfect for fans of authors like Erin Silver or Hazel Beck and books like The babysitter's coven series. I'm excited to see where this goes next when we focus on Jessica's brother!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review. This was also good on audio narrated by Piper Goodeve and Tim Paige.
I'm so sorry Meg Cabot, I've been a life long fan but this book was such a miss for me.
I feel like maybe her writing hasn't adjusted to the modern times? I wouldn't have batted an eye if you told me this was published in 2006.
I found Jessica pretty insufferable, present day and the high school version. Derrick was pretty cringy with his faux broody/mysterious attitude.
Their "quest" felt forced and their chemistry was non existent to me.
Charming, small-town, witchy little romance with a YA vibe.
Jess is a witch, albeit one not certified by the World Council of Witches. Having learned from a magical error in her youth, she now uses her magic in her clothing store to help people find the perfect, confidence-building outfits. All that changes when Derrick walks into her store, telling her she's the Chosen One who will train the Bringer of Light. Derrick and Jess set off to recruit that Bringer of Light--a teenager full of potential--and avert a disaster of epic proportions for the town of West Harbor. Of course, they fall in love along the way--but will that love survive Jess learning about the secrets Derrick has been keeping?
Plot and characterization make this a bit confusing at times, but I'd suggest focusing on the romance and fun, small-town touches rather than on the high-stakes magic plot. The latter fizzles near the end. What you are left with is a collection of engaging side characters--including the precocious budding witch Esther, her girlfriend Gabby, and Jess's BFFs Mark and Dina--and a sweet insta-love between Derrick and Jess.
If you like angst-free, low-drama romances with supernatural elements and a dash of explicit content, this book is for you.
All American Girl is one of my all time favorite teen books so I've been really excited to explore Meg Cabot's adult books recently. This is the fourth one I've read and while I think she is a really talented writer I think teen characters are where she shines. Ester and Gabby ended up being my favorite characters in this one. I loved their relationship and how they supported each other! I also thought Ester was a great character overall! I loved how unfazed she was by all the paranormal happenings. I also really enjoyed the way she was able to resolved the town's issues. I never connected with Jessica the same way. I appreciated her feminism but it sometimes came up at inappropriate times. It is true that things women like are often considered silly but that doesn't mean that sending your friends make up photos support should come over learning how to save the town. I also didn't love her and Derrick's relationship. It moved really quickly but they also didn't trust each other very well. Also it's never fun to see fully grown adults still dealing with stuff from high school. I know it happens sometimes but it's not ideal. At the end of the day I'm glad I read this one but I'm not sure I'll continue the series.
Jessica Gold’s magic history hasn’t been the smoothest. When a love spell goes wrong in high school she sets to rectify things only to make an enemy for life it seems. Content with casting small spells at her clothing boutique Enchantments in West Harbor. When motorcycle jacket wearing Derrick comes to Jessica proclaiming she is the Chosen One and in order to save West Harbor she must mentor teenage witch Esther the Bringer of Light. But who really is Derrick Winters? Can Jessica trust him? And most importantly can she and Esther save West Harbor?
This was a fun witchy read with an east coast setting and colorful characters. I enjoyed the balance of humor and romance. One of the main takeaways was learning to love yourself for who you are, regardless of what others think of you. I really appreciated this message as I feel this is something we all struggle with at times. A great book to get the fall feels going!
Enchanted to meet you by Meg Cabot was such a cute paranormal romance read! I haven't read this genre by Meg Cabot in awhile and I was pleasantly surprised to be given The Mediator vibes along with one of her older young adult fantasy books.
I liked the tips part from the book of spells that was shown in the book and I liked how Rosalie tried to be a decent human being at the end. She was what gave me Princess Diaries vibe with the mean girl in that one who turned nice.
I also liked the whole chosen one aspect. I wish I saw more of the romance for this book but it was still a great kick off for the spooky reading time for me. If you are looking for something to prop your feet up with on a cold fall rainy day, look no further than Enchanted to meet you! It will leave you enchanted.
This was a four star rating mostly because it just didn't have that extra ingredient for me to make it a five star rating but it was still really good. I did enjoy it. Thank you Netgalley and publishers for allowing me the chance to read and review.
Witches are trending in romance right now but I am not surprised that this is now an incomparable fave. No one can do it like Meg Cabot and this is a perfect fun fall read!
This was such a fun read. It was perfect for some cooler weather and fall colors starting to show up in the trees. I love a good witchy read and this did not disappoint.
I LOVED Jessica. She was so sweet and always had the best attitude. I love how she was always working for the better of everyone. And Derrick! Gotta love a sweet natured nurturing guy with long hair and tats. Overall this was a great lighthearted read that’s perfect for fall a witchy vibes. I can’t wait for more West Harbor stories!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Was it good? I’m not sure. But it did give me the same feeling as Gilmore Girls and Halloweentown. It’s a great fall/Halloween read but the plot made no sense, the ending felt rushed and totally random. The big “threat” was hardly anything. I suppose it’s more of a cozy Halloween read but still. The romance was also non existent, there was no build up, it felt forced but whatever. Still cute and fun
3.5 stars
Meg Cabot's latest novel takes readers to the small town of West Harbor and introduces a fabulous and funny cast of characters. Cabot has a distinct writing style that really immerses the reader into the MC's head and while that may seem like a lot it's honestly very fun, sweet, and usually hilarious.
This first book focuses on Jessica Gold, shop owner, stylist, and of course, witch. She's a little bit of an outcast in the witch world after casting a spell affecting the most popular boy in school. Still, Jessica has a successful business, a core group of friends, and is a homeowner so stuff seems to be going okay for her. At least until Derrick Winters shows up and claims she's the chosen one. And worse she has responsibilities as that chosen one, namely stopping disaster from destroying her town. Obviously, there's sexual tension between Jessica and Derrick though a few twists in the story definitely put their romance in jeopardy.
Enchanted to Meet You is funny, a little spicy, and definitely witchy. I loved the secondary characters especially Esther who is so unfazed and capable. I also liked that Cabot added diversity including BIPOC and LGBT characters and it felt natural and not forced. I feel like romcoms can be so focused on the main pairing that the secondary characters can fall flat or are just background noise but Enchanted to Meet You fleshes out all the characters. I'm definitely excited for the next book in the series.
I think my only issue was I wanted a little more magic and the issues with the popular girl and popular boy don't seem super resolved especially with the connotations of the spell Jessica casts in high school. I'm keeping it vague because of spoilers.
Overall though I did enjoy this book a lot and would highly recommend to existing fans of Meg Cabot or even people new to the author.
I was provided a free copy of this book through NetGalley,
I was so excited for this book because of the author and the title/cover's Swiftie reference, but it let me down a bit. It felt like there was no emotion in this book and it was a bit all over the place. There were quite a few plot holes as well. It was fun to read, but it felt like there was a lot missing.
