Wa super captivating and cute! Would recommend if you have the time to read it in one sitting because you will not be able to put it down!
All opinions expressed are my own, I was gifted this book through NetGallery.
So much fun! The story and dialogue just flowed so easily, and the story was so addictive. The romance developed naturally, and I loved the mentorship aspect with the teen characters. This was a great start to what will undoubtedly be a really fun series.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
I should start by saying I'm totally biased, because Meg Cabot has been one of my favorite authors for like twenty years, and I loved this book just like all of her others. The characters were so well-developed I felt like just one of the group hanging out. I loved the plot, and the twist from Derrick. All around this was such a cute story and I can't wait for the rest of the series!
I really enjoyed this book. It had the perfect amount of romance, and fantasy all mixed into one. I love anything supernatural and witches are most definitely at the top of that list. Jessica being a cottage witch was super cute and I loved the way she used her magic to make people in her small town feel good about themselves in the clothes that they wear. When Derrick walks in all dark and debonair just sort of placing his focus on Jessica, I was getting ShadowHunter vibes but it was definitely not the same thing. Derrick is here to protect Jessica because she's the Chosen One. But is he being honest about everything? The end was a little bit of a shock but I had my suspicions ! I really hope there's going to be a sequel to this because I would love to see where Jess and Derrick land next.
Thanks for NetGalley and HarperCollins for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.
I feel like I've been reading so many witchy romance books lately, and I cannot get enough. I love the idea of introducing a supernatural or magical element into a story especially when there's romance. Sometimes it makes the world so much bigger and it more interesting. Meg Cabot is a longtime favorite author of mine. I love reading her stories, especially as she's moved into the adult romance space. It's so fun to see someone I read as a teenager grow with me as I change as a reader.
jess and Derick are such fun characters to follow throughout this magical mystery. I did feel like they were parts I didn't really understand what was happening, why it was such a big deal, or what the resolution was supposed to be. I loved watching Jesse and Derick interact with their friends, each other, and the town. I loved seeing them grow as characters and then to grow together as we introduce the romance vibes.
This was such a super fun story. It would be perfect for reading during fall/autumn. If you are looking for Halloween vibes it's got everything you want because you know you're in good hands with Meg Cabot. i'm looking forward to the next books in the series.
It’s Magic When You Meet Your Match
In her teenage years, lovelorn Jessica Gold cast a spell that went disastrously wrong, and brought her all the wrong kind of attention—as well as a lifetime ban from the World Council of Witches.
So no one is more surprised than Jess when, fifteen years later, tall, handsome WCW member Derrick Winters shows up in her quaint little village of West Harbor and claims that Jess is the Chosen One.
She’s the Chosen One
Not chosen by West Harbor’s snobby elite to style them for the town’s tricentennial ball—though Jess owns the chicest clothing boutique in town. And not chosen finally to be on the WCW, either—not that Jess would have said yes, anyway, since she’s done with any organization that tries to dictate what makes a “true” witch.
No, Jess has been chosen to help save West Harbor itself . . .
As Summer Ends, Her Power Grows
But just when Jess is beginning to think that she and Derrick might have a certain magic of their own—and not of the supernatural variety—Jess learns he may not be who she thought he was.
And suddenly Jess finds herself having to make another kind of choice: trust Derrick and work with him to combat the sinister force battling to bring down West Harbor, or use her gift as she always has: to keep herself, and her heart, safe.
Can she work her magic in time?
I have so many ARCs from NetGalley right now that I have started doing this thing where I use the random number generator at random.org to help me choose my next one from my NetGalley spreadsheet so that I get a bit of variety. I was delighted when it selected this one, because I love Meg Cabot and I almost always enjoy a witchy romance. In this one, cottage witch Jessica Gold is using her magic to help people find clothes that make them feel beautiful in her boutique, Enchantments, in West Harbor, Connecticut. Out of the blue, super hot witch Derrick Walters shows up and tells her that West Harbor is experiencing a rift caused by demons and that she has been prophesied as the Chosen One. He's been sent to find her and help her find the other person in the prophecy, the Bringer of Light, who turns out to be a smart, snarky teenaged witch named Esther. Together, the three of them try to prepare for what's coming while also avoiding the World Council of Witches, an elitist organization for witches that Jessica's nemesis Rosalie Hopkins belongs to but that Jessica has been barred from joining since she began practicing her craft. I definitely liked the romance between Jessica and Derrick, but mostly I just loved Jess and her circle of friends and neighbors. Solid humor and good witch vibes all throughout!
I love a witchy book and I *especially* love a witchy book with a punny title. So when I heard one of my favorite authors, Meg Cabot, was coming out with a witchy book with a punny title, I was stoked. I was even more stoked when I was offered an Advance Reader Copy (ARC)!
I really, really enjoyed this book. There's magic, there's romance, there's a lovable main cast and a perfectly hateable mean girl villain. You get some witch history, too, which I always find interesting. The plot kicked off pretty much immediately, which I always appreciate. I don't love when books kind of mosy about 70-90 pages before something actually happens. I was a little confused by the issue they were facing, but it didn't get in the way of me enjoying getting to know Jess and Derrick. West Harbor also seems really cute and I'm assuming I'll get to visit again because Enchanted to Meet You is "A Witches of West Harbor Novel" — to me that means MORE!! I highly recommend this book and think it would make a cozy fall read. Or save it for Halloween 👻
THANK YOU to Meg Cabot, HarperCollins, and NetGalley for the ARC!
I read this book as an advanced reader’s copy from Harper Collins. After being a long time, Meg Cabot super fan, I was excited to get my hands on this book. Books about witches are really not my usual read. I tend to stay away from anything super natural or anything in the fantasy realm, but this book was so true to Cabot’s sweet romantic heart.
The title is also precious. How did I not realize that this was my favorite Taylor Swift song before I started reading it?
Spoiler alert (? Kind of?)
I definitely love a fake dating trope, but this one felt so natural. Like obviously, he was gonna act like he was her boyfriend, and I felt like things flowed so much better than they do in many books.
I really liked flashbacks into Jessica‘s childhood to see how connected she was to what she thought had caused the rift and not to mention her tension with Rosalie. I personally would have continued to include them throughout the novel. I think, even looking at may be a past entry of hers towards the end would’ve been cool,
Speaking of Rosalie, no one creates a nemesis quite like Cabot. She was everything that you want to read in a memos is: superficial and oblivious, vindictive, willing to go to any lengths to get what she wants. Lana Weinberger would be proud.
I did really enjoy a lot of the characters. I kind of wish to learn more about Dina maybe that will be discussed in another book.
Though a few portions of the book were predictable (of course Gaia was going to be Derrick’s mother) other parts were not (Gaia coming to meddle in her son’s life).
All in all this was a good read!
I adore Meg Cabot and especially her “plus-size” heroines (pick up the Heather Wells series if you haven’t already!). FMC Jessica Gold is a witch who cast a love spell that went very wrong, a wrongness that seemed to be amplified by the spell cast by Jessica’s nemesis, Rosalie Hopkins. Somehow Jess is shunned and Rosalie ends up a powerhouse of the magical world. So imagine Jess’s surprise when hunky Derrick Winters enters her clothing shop one day and announces that she is the Chosen One who, along with teenager “Bringer of Light” Esther must save her small town of West Harbor, Connecticut from destruction.
The premise is fantastical, but then it is supposed to be. The magic is the main point of the story here - while there is romance between Derrick and Jess, it is more of a side dish than the main course. Cabot excels at writing characters and that shows here. Derrick, Jess, Esther, Dina, Mark, even Rosalie all feel well-developed. I loved the mentorship Jess provides to Esther, and Cabot’s inclusion of a same-sex relationship as just a normal thing (which it is!).
Cute, light-hearted, easy to read. I can see curling up with a cup of cocoa on a rainy day and devouring this book. Solid 4 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for a complimentary ARC of this book. The opinions in this review are my own.
This was such a fun, cozy read! I love books about witches and this was quirky and funny and I had a lot of fun with it! It definitely felt like it was more YA at times, but that didn’t take away from the experience at all. I loved the characters and I definitely recommend if you’re looking for a light read!
3.5⭐️
This had a very YA feel to it (minus all the sex, which wasn’t very spicy if you ask me) which I love about Meg Cabot books. It brings be back to the days of the Princess Diaries and who doesn’t love a little nostalgia? Was it a little ridiculous and overdone? Yes, but I love that too. As a “witch” myself, this was an instant read for me.
Jessica Gold cast a love spell on her high school crush that ended terribly. Now, 15 years later, a mysterious man, Derrick Winters, enters her boutique and tells her the town is in serious danger and she, as the Chosen One, can stop it. Along with a 16 year old girl who’s the Bringer of Light. All while dodging her high school nemesis, Rosalie Hopkins, a storm witch. That shouldn’t be too hard, right?
As Jessica and Derrick grow closer, there’s still something he’s keeping from her. When she finds out, will it be enough to drive them apart and leave the town in danger?
I really enjoyed this as a whole. I loved the characters, even the side ones. I wanted spicier scenes, but that’s the booktok in me showing. I felt like the romance was rushed.
I loved seeing elements from the witchy stories we grew up reading make an appearance. I do think the story dragged on a bit too long, however it was done well. I also think the ending was anticlimactic and I would have liked something better. Regardless, I think this is a feel good witchy romance worth the read!
Thank you to the publisher, author and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book!
Wanna thank netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
I was so excited to read this as Meg Cabot is always a good read.
I loved the main characters, I loved the dash of romance but this not the main plot point so if you’re looking for a romance only type book then this may not be for you. The quirky small town had a lot of issues happening and the good witch Jess and another witch Derrick are working together to stop it all from going horribly wrong.
Overall fun book, light book would be perfect on a cozy cold day to sit and read. It seems to be a good fit for a younger crowd maybe late high school/college age. I went in thinking it was going to be different Maybe a bit more mature so I was a little disappointed but that is my fault. The book is great work, you can picture the characters and the town I was just left wanting more somehow. More depth
Was very excited to finish the ARC of this book. As with any Meg Cabot story, it was a fun and lighthearted read, but this time with a little bit of magic and history thrown in. Meg's books are always great pick me ups for any situation and this book is no different. I am very excited for the next installment and to see how the adventure continues. My only complaint would be the love interest is no Cooper (Heather Wells) but I guess they can't be as good as him.
This entertaining paranormal romance completely captivated me from start to finish. I found myself eagerly diving into the pages during my writing breaks, unable to resist the allure of Jessica's story and the enigmatic silver-eyed Derrick. The book's enchanting purple cover only added to its allure, beckoning me to delve deeper each time I reluctantly put it down. (I must commend Meg Cabot for earning the adoration of Swifties by cleverly choosing "Enchanted" as the book's title.)
What sets this book apart is not only its perfect portrayal of a plus-size positive message, but also its realistic depiction of high school life. Jessica Gold, the main character, is a quick-witted and creative soul who possesses a unique talent for helping her customers find clothing that makes them feel truly good about themselves. However, she still carries the weight of her high school experiment to become part of the witch community, an incident she desperately wants to forget.
After her travels in Europe and graduating from college in New York, Jessica returns to her quaint hometown in Connecticut. With dreams of opening her own boutique called "Enchantments," she hopes to breathe new life into her love life, embrace the freedom of singledom, reconnect with her best friends from high school, and adapt to life as a cat mom. However, her tranquil existence is shattered when a striking silver-eyed stranger named Derrick Winters appears in her store. He reveals that a long-unresolved crime from the past threatens to destroy West Harbor, and Jessica, as the CHOSEN ONE, must work alongside the intelligent high school witch queen, Esther Dodge—a.k.a. the "Bringer of Light"—to protect the town.
Naturally, Jessica is plagued by questions. For years, she has been excluded from the World Council of Witches (WCW), labeled a "cottage witch" due to her lack of ancestral witchery. She feels like an outsider, with no knowledge of Esther Dodge or how she can harness the light within her. To complicate matters, Derrick is cryptic and vanishes after dropping this bombshell, leaving Jessica in the dark.
As the story unfolds, we are transported back and forth between Jessica's high school years and her present-day journey. We witness how her life changed after her mother gifted her with "Goody Fletcher's Book of Useful Household Tips" and the disastrous love spell she attempted, which ignited a bitter animosity between her and Rosalie—a member of the WCW and the school's queen bee—who now utilizes her superpowers to send storm stones as acts of retaliation.
While Jessica attempts to forge a connection with Esther, Derrick shadows her every move, driven by a hidden agenda that remains shrouded in mystery. Their time together intensifies the attraction between them, even though the chemistry falls somewhat short of sparking fireworks. The book's fantasy elements overshadow the romantic aspects, and although the pacing slows in the middle, the conclusion ties up loose ends satisfactorily.
The characterization in this book is a true highlight. The supporting characters, such as Esther, Dina, and Mark, inject additional fun and depth into the narrative, further enhancing the overall reading experience.
Though I yearned for a stronger romantic connection between Jessica and Derrick, the abundance of fantastical elements left me thoroughly enchanted. Consequently, I have no hesitation in raising my rating from 3.5 stars to a solid 4!
"Cute," "enjoyable," and "fast-paced" aptly describe this delightful read, making it a highly recommended choice for fans of the author and readers of paranormal romance.
A heartfelt thank you goes to NetGalley, Avon, and Harper Voyager for graciously providing me with a digital reviewer copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Reviewed for NetGalley:
Jessica, owner of a neighborhood clothing store, Enchantments, is more than meets the eye. Well, actually, after meddling with a book of witchcraft since being a teenager, she is surprised to learn that the is the Chosen One. The Chosen One that needs to work with a teenage, Bringer of Light to save her town. Wow, that's a mouthful.
But really, it works. A high school arch nemesis that can control the weather, love spells, and a handsome witch that that helps Jessica to save her town, Cabot set up nicely for a fun read.
This is my first Meg Cabot read and I will definitely read more! This book is a cute, easy read about love and witchcraft. The story line is simple and nothing surprising. The ending did seem to tie up rather quickly and was not the best ending, but still a good book overall.
This will be the perfect fall read!
Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Reading this in May, I got a happy glow thinking about all the people who are going to get to read this when it comes out in the fall - it’s the PERFECT spooky season read and would pair excellently with a warm cozy drink inside on a cool creepy night.
Reasons why:
Witchy, magical, not scary
Quintessential Meg Cabot characters who are witty and smart and so nice and just generally great humans
Esther, who is the greatest of her archetype I have ever seen (without giving too much away)
Cute teen girlfriends (as in gay-type, lesbian lovers)
Take down the establishment and crush the patriarchy vibes
Apparently it’s the first in a series? So we could be getting these every fall for years to come. Theoretically. Hint hint, publishers.
Jessica Gold is a boutique-owning with, whose main power seems to be finding the perfect outfit for her customers. She hasn't performed actual magic since a love spell gone wrong in high school, but that all changes when handsome, Viking-esque, witch appears in her store. Derrick tells Jessica that he needs her help to save the town from destruction, leading them off on a journey full of magical family trees and high school memories.
A quick and cute read, just as I've come to expect from Meg Cabot. Jessica's friends, Dina and Mark, as well as her teenage protegée, Esther, provided some comedic moments, which lightened up the doom-and-gloom tone of the prophecy. The mystery of Derrick is what kept me reading, and it only got better once we began to meet some of his family! Jessica and Derrick reminded me a lot of Janet Evanovich's Lizzie and Diesel, including the pet cat.
The middle of the book was a bit slow, as the chemistry between Jessica and Derrick was minimal, even once they got together. Jessica's drama with Rosalie felt very childish, especially since they were supposed to both be in their early/mid-thirties. The history of the witches in West Harbor was interesting, and I almost feel the book would have benefitted from either having a POV from Goody Fletcher, or having Esther be the main character, considering her interest in the persecution of the witches.
I had requested an ARC of this book as Meg Cabot is one of my favourite authors! She writes beautifully and I always have a smile on my face while reading her books.
Her "Princess Diaries" and "The boy" series are my absolute favourites!
Thank you to the publisher, Meg and Net Galley for providing me with an opportunity to read this fantastic book before it is out in the world!
Now on to the review, I loved the title! It reminded me of my favourite singer, Taylor Swift's song "Enchanted"! And the purple cover!!! Beautiful 💜
The female protagonist is Jessica, a witch who is full of life and running a special boutique in the small town of West Harbor. Enter Derrick, another witch who announces an important mission for Jessica to undertake.
The mission is serious, so is the preparation. But it's not like how we see in movies with daily planning and plotting that happens to make sure that the mission is a successful one. In fact, we readers are not quite sure what exactly is going to happen on the fated day! That's what keeps us engaged in the plot. The book has wonderful warm characters! I loved Dina and Mark, right from their high school personas to their adult living together and still in love lives. I also enjoyed reading about Rosalie. I had forgotten how well Meg pens her villains! Rosalie will make you curious about her and dislike her at the same time.
The chapters each have beginning quotes signifying something special. I won't give away what those quotes speak about as that would be a major spoiler. However, it's nice and unique. Both Jessica and Derrick's points of views are covered, with Jessica having more chapters dedicated to her. We do go from Jessica's high school life and then adult life in a few chapters but the to and fro is easy to handle and fun.
Meg has introduced Ethan, Jessica's younger brother and Cat, Mark's younger sister in the final chapter and I really hope it leads to a new book in this new series.
This book is fun if you do not take it too seriously. It does not include Mission Impossible kind of action.
You'd love this book if you have read previous work of the author.
And there are two insane twists which I absolutely did not see coming!
Go for it!
P.S: There is a whole paragraph describing how Jessica has no methods of contacting Derrick and him responding that she will be able to if required. And then in the next few chapters, we see Jessica message Derrick and him actually receiving the same! Is it magic? Do did I actually miss the exchange of numbers?
First I would like to thank Avon and Harper Voyager as well as Netgalley for an ARC of this book.
While I really enjoyed the premise of this book I wasn’t blown away by the execution of it. The FMC is witty and entertaining and her relationships with her friends and mentee gave me a chuckle on more than one occasion. The romantic subplot drew me in initially but as the story went on seemed to fall flat in comparison to other aspects. The “Chosen One” portion of the plot also felt a bit rushed in the end for me. But the overall setting and dynamic kept me in it for the long haul.
