"I voluntarily read and reviewed the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
I am currently in a reading slump, so it was very hard for me to focus on reading this. I am really upset I can't get through this, as the premise sounds amazing -- having to work with the flaky brother of the bride to make sure the wedding goes well? iconic. Maybe I'll come back to this at a later time.
I liked The Donut Trap. I didn't love this showing of a girl gang friend group who had NO IDEA their friend was struggling so much! While it is indicative of just how poisonous our individualistic society has gotten - "must do all the things alone or fail" - I felt like these friends were so out of touch I wouldn't even call them friends. A lot of the struggle and tension in this book was about the main characters not being able to grow up and say they need help.
Fancy Meeting You Here is a fun, fast-paced romance with fairly low stakes but a whole lot of chemistry under the hood. It’s romantic and quite fun, with a winning hero and heroine.
Elise Ngo is in mega bridesmaid mode. All three of her closest friends are getting married within months of each other, and she’s not only in every single wedding party, she’s acting as a florist for all of them.
Between shower games, bridal functions, and actually running her own flower shop, Elise is ragged from the stress, but as a struggling florist she needs the extra attention. On top of everything else she has going on, it turns out the swankiest and highest profile of the three weddings, for her friend Becca’s who has a very politically-entangled family, is running low on caterers. In desperation, she hires Ben Yu to make food for the reception – and he turns out to be the bride’s long mysterious brother.
Ben proves to be as distant in the flesh as he has been in Becca’s stories, but in spite of his coldness and Elise’s warmth, they carve out a sense of respect for one another. Ben has been working functions for his mom’s political campaign, and he invites Elise to work as a florist for several important stops. Ben and Elise get closer, but will the stress of the situation – and the conflict inherent in the political atmosphere in which they’re working – affect their romance?
Fancy Meeting You Here is grounded in a world of real people having grown-up conversations. I liked it more than Circling Back to You; the characters are fun and have more fun. The only reason this isn’t an A-level read is because there isn’t much tension in the romance, in spite of what the blurb says. There should have been a whole lot more conflict going on, especially with the level of political involvement happening in the subplot of this story. Still, it’s a fun, easy to enjoy book.
Elise and Ben have a classic grumpy-and-sunshine relationship, and Elise is incredibly easy to root for. All she wants is to finally be successful at something important to her, and be a good friend to boot – who wouldn’t want to root for someone like that? And Ben turns out to be a very cool guy, it just takes him a while to warm up.
The food and floral porn here are great; I loved the way Tieu playfully takes on wedding, romantic and family-related conventions with ease. All of Elise’s friends are likable people, and Tieu does a great job of exploring each tradition inherent to each of Elise’s friends’ families.
This took all of the things I liked in Circling Back to You and improved upon them three-fold, but the book still ends up bubbling just under DIK status; I couldn’t give it that level of praise. But it’s still pretty darn good. I sense Julie Tieu has a full-on A grade book in her, but until then, pick up Fancy Meeting You Here and enjoy the warmth it provides.
Elise's three best friends are all getting married within a few months of each other, and she is a bridesmaid and florist for all three of them. We soon learn that Elise is also at risk of losing her business, but hasn't told her friends. Her friend Beth keeps trying to set her up on a blind date since she is now the only single person in their group.
At her friend Rebecca's wedding, she meets Ben, Rebecca's younger brother. Although Ben is stand-offish and rude, he hires Elise as the florist for his mom's campaign. As they continue to work together, Ben and Elise start to fall for each other.
This was a cute, lighthearted read. It had funny moments and banter as the two main characters go from enemies(ish) to lovers.
Julie Tieu always gives you a good time. She is a master of the classic rom com and you can tell by her references that she has incredible taste. This book will be a star for anyone who loves 27 Dresses, the story of a woman doing her very best to make her friends weddings magical. It's such a beautiful example of a friend group that stand by each other. Ones that don't let big events like weddings turn into big fights they can't come back from. Because friendship is the trust, the strongest when you react to each other with kindness when the other person needs it most. The romance in this story is also fantastic. It's not huge and sweeping in a grand sense, it's natural and its gradual. It's the beauty of finally finding the thing you never thought you would have and wrapping that love around you like a warm blanket. Just such a wonderful read that left me smiling ear to ear!
A sweet, fast read perfect for wedding season or those craving something in that vein. The comparison to 27 Dresses and the like is an apt one, you definitely get a strong bridesmaid romcom vibe.
I enjoyed our FMC, Elise, and loved following her journey. Juggling a small business on the brink, all three of your best friends getting married within weeks, and serving as both a bridesmaid and florust fit each was so much.
I liked that the story focused on Elise in both her professional endeavor, as well following her personal (friendships and romance). I thought Ben was rather endearing, it’s nice to see a main character who is more introverted and not at ease with crowds / everyone right away. I also really loved the cultural pieces and rep that were woven seamlessly into the story.
I wished for a but more time with Ben and Elise specifically, since I enjoyed seeing their dynamic. However, I still really enjoyed my read and was very satisfied with how things came together in the end. Another great read from Julie Tieu, excited to see what she writes next.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, & the publisher for the opportunity to read an early copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own
A heartwarming story about love and taking chances.
I was so fully immersed in this book, I just simply could not put it down.
The characters were delightful and felt like a breath of fresh air. I found myself easily falling in love with the main characters and feeling all the emotions they were experiencing!
Overall this is a fun and enchanting read that will draw you in from the very first chapter and have you wanting to binge it in less than 24h.
Thank you NetGalley and author for this ARC!
This book did take me a while to get in to but I am glad I continued it because I actually really enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I highly recommend.
I have read very few contemporary romance books that I would give 5 stars to and this is one. I loved the story and the characters. I will recommend this book to everyone that I know that enjoys love stories. I will also be adding this to the romance recommendations list at my library.
Julie Tieu, you’re just a bit brilliant aren’t you. Every book is an education in culture as well as a dreamy romance. I loved this book as much as her previous two. Well written, great character progression. Thank you for allowing me to read your work of art.
This book was a fun read and I really enjoyed the story, this is one of favorite authors and she doesn't disappoint with this book either. Thanks netgalley for letting me read this book.
When a wedding florist finds herself planning her best friend’s wedding, what she doesn’t plan for is falling for an aspiring chef/son of a politician... and her best friend’s brother. Elise Ngo has three best friends: Rebecca, Jesse, and Beth... and they’re all getting married within the same few months and they’ve all asked her to be both their bridesmaid and florist. Elise’s dream is to keep her small wedding florist studio open and to get her business thriving again. These weddings will be a great opportunity for her to get more exposure for her struggling flower shop. Rebecca’s wedding is going to be high profile which means the stakes are high, and when she is paired up with Rebecca’s mysterious brother who is known as a flake what she doesn’t expect is that the cute chef caterer who helped her earlier in the day would be the same flakey brother. named Ben. Ben is prickly and aloof but he is in charge of his mom’s campaign and he offers Elise the job to be the florist for the campaign, but that means they’ll have to get to know each other more... and when they’re both asked to be the best man and maid of honor for their next friend’s wedding, they’ll be seeing each other much more. The more time they spend together the more they are beginning to fall for each other... but Ben walks a very tight line especially with his mom’s campaign and the fact that Elise might be caught in the crossfires. Can they make it work despite it all? This was a cute rom com that definitely focused on the female friendship and gave off 27 Dresses Vibes. While it was cute it just felt a bit lackluster and the whole breakup/makeup felt anti-climactic. Overall, it’s a cute romance and I think if you enjoy really easy romance reads with fun female friendships, then definitely give this one a go, I’m sure it’ll be right for you!
*Thanks Netgalley and Avon and Harper Voyager, Avon for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
Adorable, and funny. Great characters. In a very cute plot. This was the perfect easy to read romance.
special thanks to Avon and Harper Voyager for this ARC!
this was my first book by Julie Tieu and it’s safe to say i loved it! the main character Elise and all her friends were so relatable and i could see my own friend group in them so much!! i loved Ben and his super cute x awkwardness and how almost chaotic the book got at times to show how crazy weddings like these really can be! overall i loved the wedding setting and how it brought this best friends brother trope together! excited to read more from Julie!!
Julie Tieu continues to wow me, and she's only getting better. Her newest book is a beautiful combination of weddings, florists, best friends brother and AAPI rep. Every single one of Elise Ngo's friends are getting married this year, and they've all asked her to both be their bridesmaid AND florist, she's in for a lot of weddings. And she cannot do it alone, Enter Ben Yu, Prickly reclusive brother of Elise's bestie Rebecca. Throw those two together and soon enough, Flowers are the only thing being arranged around here. Fancy Meeting You Here is a lovely read that I think could easily become a comfort read for many. Not an enemies to lovers per se but an opposites attract who instantly see the good in the other. The political elements in this book were a great touch to keep the story exciting and moving forward. Perfect for fans of 27 Dresses or The Wedding Date, who wished their early 2000's romcoms had a little more representation.
I loved it! Weddings, best friend’s brother, friendship, flowers, and fun are all included. It made me a little hungry at times. I was happy reading this book.
I voluntarily read an early copy.
loved this romance of not really enemies to lovers but friends of friends who end up falling in love. Loved Ben and that he grew during the relationship. Loved elise and her friends that she wanted to help with their weddings and she didn't ask for help. Loved seeing the other couples in the book. this author has become auto read and loved the heat.
