I’ve tried to pick this book up twice and for some reason and can’t seem to get past the first few chapters.. I’m not sure if it’s the writing style or the story isn’t capturing me.. I might give it a third try but I’m not hopeful
I didn’t really enjoy this title and its execution but I really enjoyed the writing and characters. Maybe I’ll do a reread since the sequel is coming out soon.
I loved this book! I could tell from just a *few* chapters in that I was embarking on an EPIC fantasy journey and I really enjoyed it and I'm SOOOOOOO ready for the next book! BRING IT ON!
Godkiller by Hannah Kaner is an epic fantasy with detailed world building that rivals Tolkien worlds. I loved Kissen so much! She is one of the best main characters I've read in a while and I couldn't help but root for her from the very first page. She is sure of herself and doesn't let her tragic backstory hold her back. She finds others like her and creates a found family of sorts. The mythology of the book was so intriguing and I especially loved the.ways the Gods manifested, especially the fire god. This book is HUGE and it definitely took me a while to get into but I ended up very satisfied with the story and I can't wait to read more in the series.
If I'm being honest, I was a bit disappointed by this one. It had such an interesting premise and plot but I found myself a bit board throughout. I had to force myself to keep turning the pages. I definitely think there is an audience for this book and I can see why people love it but in the end, it just wasn't for me.
I received a physical copy of this book. Really loved it and the world building. Looking forward to the next book to see what happens!
I never know quite what to expect in a debut, but this was a lot better than I was expecting! The world building was well thought out and thorough, and the characters were flawed but still drew me into the story. Kissen is a reluctant hero and I loved seeing her put in positions where she was forced to choose between her convictions and her mission.
The relationship between the gods and the humans was probably one of my favorite aspects of the story. The idea that the gods need the humans to worship them to gain power and then how they use that power to either help or hinder humankind is an interesting thing to examine and continue to explore as the rest of the story is released.
I will definitely be reading Sunbringer as soon as I can!
Thank you to NetGalley, Avon and Harper Voyager, and Hannah Kaner for an advanced copy of Godkiller in exchange for an honest review.
I can’t believe this book is as short as it is! What many fantasy books take two-three times as long to do, Godkiller does in just 288 pages, leaving you with a thrilling journey and not a single dull moment. Despite it being short for a fantasy book, I don’t feel like anything was left out. I just had a great time! I loved the characters and their dynamics together, and I cannot WAIT to see what happens in the sequel!
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Voyageur for the ARC.
I really enjoyed reading this. While the pace feels a little slow, and the ending a little abrupt in comparison, I still want to dive into the book too. This could have been another 200 pages longer and I would have been happy. I really liked the characters
This was cute. I am just about finished with it. I think it needed a bit more to hold my attention better.
A good book! I look forward to reading more! These have always intrigued me so I'm happy to have been gifted this title.
I really enjoyed this story. It was unique and atmospheric, with highly relatable characters. I'm looking forward to reading more of Hannah Kaner's bibliography!
First of all, I'd like to apologize for the delay in rating this book! I got sick and let my Netgalley ratings fall behind, even though I finished all the books.
Now that that's out of the way... onto the rating.
I REALLY enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure that I would at first, but it quickly hooked me. By chapter 2, I was totally invested. I loved the characters. I found them entirely relatable, and I LOVED that the main character had a disability. I know characters with disabilities are becoming more mainstream, but I still don't see a lot of them in books.
Having not just a character, but a MAIN character that was disabled was wonderfully refreshing!
I also liked that the book didn't pull any punches. It pushed boundaries and didn't have the typical "happy ending." (It's the first in a series, so it wasn't a true ending, but still.)
It was also a very fresh take on high fantasy. Unfortunately, most modern fantasy all runs together and seems a lot alike. This book had an entirely new premise and didn't really remind me of anything else I've read in quite some time.
I loved it all the way through, and I cannot wait until the next book comes out!
Kaner has crafted a world in Middren where gods are not just forbidden but actively hunted by godkillers, introducing us to the protagonist, Kissen, whose past trauma and profession intersect in a unique way. The narrative is rich with a sense of urgency and depth, providing a fresh perspective on the consequences of outlawing divine entities.
The character development is well-executed, particularly with Kissen, whose complexity adds layers to the overall storyline. The dynamic between the godkillers and the nobility creates a compelling socio-political backdrop, adding depth to the narrative.
The journey to the city of Blenraden is skillfully woven with elements of suspense and danger. The inclusion of a disillusioned knight adds an additional layer to the character dynamics, and the looming civil war intensifies the stakes. The author adeptly builds a mysterious and ominous atmosphere, creating a sense of foreboding that permeates the narrative.
While the plot is engaging, I would appreciate a bit more exploration of the cultural and historical aspects of Middren to provide a more immersive reading experience. Additionally, a deeper dive into the emotional intricacies of the characters could enhance the overall impact of the story.
In conclusion, "Godkiller" stands out as a captivating fantasy with a unique premise and well-crafted characters. I believe readers who enjoy intricately woven fantasy worlds with dark undertones will find this novel a compelling addition to the genre.
I struggled to get into this one at first but once the story got underway and you meet the main cast it picks up. As a frequent romantasy reader it was a nice change of pace to focus on a more dark, straightforward fantasy.
Godkiller was one of my favorite books of books of the year. The world in
Godkiller was beautiful and devestating and I didn’t want it to end.
I genuinely love this story. Everything from the adventure and the lore was so interesting. The world-building was amazing, and it kept me interested. I could not get enough of this story. I can't wait for another one!
I loved the adventure this book took us on. The book follows three MCs who each come from wildly different backgrounds, but they all end up traveling to the same destination. The world building, and the lore of the gods in the culture was perfect. It blended into the story seamlessly without dragging the narrative down.
Kissen, Elo, and Inara (plus Skedi) are an amazing cast of characters, and I love that we learned about each of them as they learned about each other. I love a good found family story and this novel delivered.
I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
I thought this was a really interesting debut! I definitely give it credit for its originality and uniqueness, although it didn't quite stick the landing for me. I thought the premise was interesting but I kinda lost the plotline here and there. I did LOVE the three main characters though, they were very well-thought-out, diverse, and engaging! So I'll most likely read the second book, but we'll see how I'm feeling once it comes out.
🌈Queer rep: pan/bi main female character (MF main relationship), secondary FF couple. Brief mentions of a pan/bi and poly male character, and an additional FF couple.
I was searching for a good grimdark story without a lot of romance and this really fit the bill. Enjoyed the world, characters, magic system. Can't wait for the next book!
