Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”REVIEW 4(THE HEIRESS SWAP)
Unfortunately, I didn't really like this book. I loved the storyline, but I just couldn't get myself to love the main characters, especially the Duke, Alex. I hated his arrogant behavior and his hatred for American women. I understand that he was burned twice before, but why assume you know everything about American women when only two failed you?

Evie was okay, sometimes, I liked her and sometimes I didn't. One of the things I didn't like was how she could never speak up when she was with Aimee and her uncle and aunt. Then she miraculously got the nerves to talk to the Duke anyhow.
👫🏼👫🏼
I liked the side characters except Evie's uncle and aunt. Even if she was an illegitimate child, they should have done better in making her feel like a part of the family, not just her having to work as Aimee's companion.

There might be a lot I didn't like, but I was still able to finish it early and not get bored, I'd have wanted a less arrogant hero though.
Poor little orphan Evie is taken in by her wealthy aunt and uncle. To show her appreciation, she’s tried to be compliant and helpful, to the point of journeying to England to learn to be a secretary and work in her uncle’s company. Her cousin Aimee convinces Evie to trade places, with Aimee learning to be the secretary so she can further understand her father’s company and help him run it while Evie takes over Aimee’s season in London. There, Evie encounters a duke who makes her bristle because he is convinced she’s an American Dollar Princess, bringing her wealth to Britain to trade for a title. Evie is not an ordinary heroine, she doesn’t really want to marry—she wants to become a paleontologist.
The Heiress Swap is retelling of the Prince and the Pauper, an enemies to lovers trope, secret identities, a forced fake engagement, topped by a murder conspiracy.
When American heiress Aimee goes to London with her poor chaperone cousin Evie they decide to swap places. Aimee goes to her father’s place of business in London to learn to be a clerk and Evie goes to stay with the friend of her aunt’s in order to have a season and possibly find an impoverished title to marry. Neither girl intends to marry. Evie instead finds a duke, Alex, who shares her love of fossils. Alex has been betrayed by woman before and doesn’t trust his feelings of love for Evie. Evie knows she is not socially high enough to marry a duke. However, they cannot keep their hands off each other. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for my honest review.
A highly entertaining, well-written, love story!
I truely felt like I was a character in the book itself. I loved the Princess and the Pauper likeness, how-the-tables-have-turned trope, found family trope, and was pleasantly surprised about the fossil digging. I cannot recommend reading The Heiress Swap enough. Hours later after finishing, I’m still thinking it.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
I enjoyed the story. I have not read a regency romance in quite some time so this was a nice change from my usual reads. It was nice to see it wasn’t all Balls and the like in this book. Alex and Evie actually had an interest in something fun (to me). That was very refreshing. Add in a bit of mystery as to who was trying to kill them and I was hooked. Honestly, I was a bit perturbed that I didn’t figure out who was the “villain” before it was revealed. My only complaint is using the miscommunication trope. It’s just not my favorite especially in the third act. Otherwise I found this enjoyable.
The Heiress Swap was a cute book that pulled me out of my reading slump.
Tropes: Identity swap, bluestocking, compromised, forced proximity, fake romance, class difference
American Dollar Princess Aimee wants to prove herself and learn to run her father's business. She schemes and convinces her cousin/companion/half-Brit, half-American, Evie to swap places with her on a trip to England. Aimee will be a secretary in her father's business while Evie, with an American accent pretending to be Aimee, will get to spend a few weeks in the lap of luxury.
Evie agrees to the plan and her world is turned upside down when she meets Alex, the Duke of Hargrave, fellow fossil collector and jaded man who does not trust women, especially American women.
This story was fun and moved along at a good pace. Yes, there was a bit too much tell and not enough show, and the ending was somewhat contrived with a lot packed in.
Enjoyable book. I wish there had been a bit more the Aimee, but hopefully her story will be told next.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and are freely given.
This is a highly entertaining read.
Evie Jenkins, a poor cousin who is a companion to her wealthy American cousin Aimee, is talked into changing places with Aimee on a trip to England, so Aimee can work at her father's business and prove to him that she can take it over when he retires. Evie reluctantly agrees. Everything is going fine, until Evie meets Alexander Trenton, The Duke of Hargrove at a ball. Alex, who was once engaged to an American only to find her cheating on him, is skeptical of all American heiress's, who he calls "dollar princesses", a wealthy American lady just looking for a title in exchange for her dowry.
They find out that they both have an unusual interest in fossils. As they spend more time together, they start to have feelings for each other.
This is a very interesting story with lots of chemistry, suspense and romance.
This is the first book by Maddison Michaels that I have read, but I can't wait to read more.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher and all opinions are my own.
Evie and Alex’s story is wonderful. Evie is pretending to be an American heiress in England. She is sweet and feisty. Alex is a grumpy Duke who has given up on love and marriage. The plot has love, drama, and deceit. The characters are interesting and at times funny. Readers will love the quick dialogue as the characters fall in love. It is worth turning the pages and being surprised by the outcomes.
Returning to London after six years in New York, Evie Jenkins allowed her cousin Aimee to talk her into swapping places. She’s to pretend being an American heiress while Aimee secretly interns at her father’s company. Fooling the dowager Countess of Brexton, society and just about every titled bachelor. Oh yes, and not, under any circumstance, accept a proposal! Whatever could go wrong?
The countess’ son is nice enough, but his cousin! Thinking he can best her at her passion! Dismissing her as just another conniving, brainless Dollar Princess! She’ll show him! As an American she can be just as bold and brazen as that pompous, arrogant, brooding and indecently handsome duke deserves!
Seeing his cousin Sam, the Earl of Brexton, fall head over heels for his houseguest, Alexander Trenton, Duke of Hargrave, is set on saving him from the dreadful faith he himself suffered a decade earlier: heartbreak by Dollar Princess. He’ll prove by whatever means necessary she’s just like all the others: spoiled, selfish and is search of a title!
Only, the girl is not impressed by his rank, nor by his charm. And she claims not wanting to marry. Least of all him! No matter, he’ll expose that smart-mouth, snooty wannabe-lady and her sensual and delectably kissable lips for what she is!
And then they discover their shared passion for history and palaeontology… Turns out that’s not all they share! And oops, they’re caught!
📚 This book is an exquisite hoot! Sizzling attraction, witty banter, hilarious sarcasm and chemistry for days. The sparks between these two are literally flying of the page! But don’t be fooled, it has some unpredictable twists, intrigue and nefarious schemes too with a dash of pining, heartache, guilt and rage. And the ending, oh my - swoony sigh - is just old school Hollywood romance!
Get your hands on this one as soon as you can! It’s just perfect!!
📚 Frenemies to lovers, age gap (32/22), steamy, fake engagement, class difference, mistaken identity
Thank you to the author for this eARC! All opinions are entirely my own.
I like Maddison Michaels' work, so it was with pleasure I requested this arc. While a little repetitive at times (the Duke made it clear multiple times his aversion to American women), it was still interesting to read because of the sparring between him and Evie. I definitely intend to buy this book when it is released. Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for this advanced copy, which I voluntarily read and reviewed.
Historical romance. Victorian-era England. Book 1 of the Dollar Princess series. Evie is the orphaned illegitimate cousin and companion to American heiress Aimee who convinces Evie to switch places for the Season: Evie will go to balls and events while Aimee works as a secretary at her father’s company. Stern, serious, skeptical duke Alex believes that Evie (as Aimee) has set her sights on his cousin’s title and swears to prevent such deception and heartbreak from taking place. He has his own hang-ups after he caught his ex-fiancee cheating on him the night before their wedding and he’s completely distrustful of women. But of course, Alex and Evie have a lot of common interests and he slowly starts to realize that she is not trying to entrap a titled lord after all. Evie feels terrible for not being honest about her identity, especially as she starts to actually fall in love with Alex, knowing that he will hate her dishonesty. The book was a little slow-going at times, but we get a bit of external drama with fossils and caves and thugs hired to scare Evie, which brings out Alex’s protective side.
Evie Jenkins didn’t know what she was thinking by agreeing to switch places with her American heiress cousin. After all, she’s naught but a poor—and usually quite sensible—companion. All she has to do is spend six weeks among London society, pretending to be an heiress…and ensure that absolutely under no circumstances does she accept any proposals of marriage. When his cousin declares himself in love with a new woman visiting from the States, Alexander Trenton—the sixth Duke of Hargrave—is determined to prove that the young lady in question is just another American "Dollar Princess" desperate for an English title. She seems innocent enough.
This seems like a book I've already read but it was good anyway. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.
What an absolute delight this story is! Such a refreshing, original tale that will keep you entranced and guessing to the very end! I absolutely adored Evie and her growth throughout the book, especially towards the end, when her world truly comes crashing down. Alex is in such a muddle with his father’s cruelty, he doesn’t trust any female and when his world crashes down at the same time as Evie’s, all hell breaks loose. This book will fill you with every emotion; laughter, especially during their first dance, fear as evil starts to rear its ugly head, absolute pain and tears and then supreme joy! A LOVELY book, well worth reading! One to read again, it is that good!
I received this ARC copy for free and these are my own opinions.
Look, I tried. And I feel awful for doing this because it's an ARC and I prefer not dnf'ing ARCs, but this one is just not it.
This book has more telling than showing, which I always hate. Even their first meeting was told, and I feel robbed. I want to know what their first impressions were of each other.
Another thing that is bugging me is that the same things are being told over and over: he does not like American heiresses and thinks the worst of them, they both love fossils and whatever.
I was at 40% when I checked my reading progress, and I felt utterly discouraged that I still had 60% to go through. Which is not a good sign, so dnf it is.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for the ARC via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
I was a bit iffy about the blurb of this story, thinking it sounded a bit bland and predictable. But have enjoyed the Maddison Michaels books I have read in the past so I gave it a go.
Evie Jenkins was raised in the poor section of London until she was a teenager. She is an illegitimate orphan, losing her parents at a young age to illness, and raised by her loving aunt. Unfortunately her aunt also passed and she was lucky to have been found by her father's brother before being forced to take to the streets. Her uncle and aunt are wealthy Americans, the Thornton-Joneses, and she was taken to live as a companion to her heiress cousin in New York. Now adults, Evie and Aimee, are travelling back to London. It was arranged by Aimee's parents for Aimee to be launched into Society by a countess who is friends with Aimee's mother, to find an aristocratic husband, while Evie would be trained as a secretary at the family's offices in London. Evie does not want this as her future, but knows that, as an illegitimate, poor cousin, she really has no choice, and is grateful for the what her aunt and uncle have given her so far. Aimee likewise is not happy with the future path set by her parents. Instead of being a Dollar Princess using her dowry to purchase a title, Aimee wants to learn her father's business so she can actively take part in it, but has been denied by her father when she offered this as an option in the past.
She sees the opportunity, since she and Evie are travelling without her parents, to swap places, so that Aimee can infiltrate the business and show her father that she is determined to learn all aspects of his industry. Evie is uncertain, and leery of taking her place, but agrees to pretend to be Aimee for the 6 weeks they will be in England.
Evie successfully takes Aimee's place, hosted as a wealthy American Heiress by the Countess of Brexton. Her son, Samuel, the Earl of Brexton declares his romantic interest in her to his family, including his cousin, Alex, the Duke of Hargrave. Alex is very close to his cousins, and because of his own failed romantic past with one of the American Dollar Princesses, is determined to show Samuel that Evie/Aimee is just like Alex's ex-fiancee, a devious, lying, greedy, heart breaking, title hunter, and determines the best way to do this is to try to seduce Evie/Aimee himself. When he meet Aimee/Evie, he finds that he shares a lot in common with her, including a shared love of the new science of paleontology, and fights his own attraction to her. But he was burnt quite badly in the past and his prior hurt causes constant suspicion about Evie. Evie also finds herself falling for the Duke, but is stymied by her own guilt about her lies, especially on finding out his past.
Their growing romance has the added drama of aggressively manipulative matchmaking by family members, forcing a pretend engagement, and as they work their way around this, they are forced into a darker drama of someone targeting Evie and the Duke for injury or death. Then of course, they have to deal with the consequences when Evie and Aimee's ruse and the subsequent lies are exposed. Alex after all, had been lied to by a Dollar Princess before.
I liked the energy of Alex and Evie together and their rather sweet shared connection of their love of books/fossils/paleontology. Alex sounds like he was severely hurt in the past and has a strong distrust of women, especially American heiresses, so had a strong personal prejudice to overcome. Evie sounds like she was a woman on the outside looking in, and not comfortable living the lie of their identity swap, but also looking for love and connections. I enjoyed the relationships they shared with each other and their families as well, and it was a bumpy emotional road, but was glad to find Evie and Alex finding their HEA together, and Alex willing to risk his heart again to find love.
4.5 stars out of 5
This book felt like reading a fairytale!
I loved the characters. They were a lot of fun and had great personalities. I especially liked Evie and Aimee. (Hoping there’s a book two for Aimee!) Alex could be frustrating at times but he won me in the end.
The banter here was fantastic. The back and forth between Evie and Alex was quick witted and funny.
The writing was great too.
The pacing slowed down a bit in the middle but picked right back up. This was a very entertaining, romantic and enjoyable read.
I have read all previous books by Maddison Michaels and I have been captivated by her stories and her way of writing. I could not wait to start the Heiress Swap!
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC.
What follows is my own opinion on the book.
Evie and her cousin Aimee live in New York, they look alike but they could not be any more different for circumstances and ideas. Evie is a paid companion whereas her cousin Aimee is the heiress to a fortune. They both get shipped out to London so that Aimee can find an English title to marry. But Aimee is having none of that and convinces her cousin into acting her part, while Aimee would train as a secretary in Aimee's father's business in Evie's stead.
Enter the lords: the brooding Alex, Duke of Hargraves and his cousin the charming and easygoing Earl Sam.
Despite the Duke's suspicious nature and his quest to unmask Evie's intentions to save the Earl from a dollar princess, he is captivated by her and cannot resist her many charms.
This could lead only to trouble for both the Duke and Evie, who is similarly smitten.
We follow their constant bartering and bickering but what is sizzleling between them cannot be denied!
What will happen when a murdering plot is put in place? Will Evie inform Alex of who she truly is?
I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down, it has romance and mystery all rolled into one.
I can't wait for the second installment in this series!
What tangled web when they the cousins first conceived to deceive. The couple’s relationship progressed from antagonistic suspicions to shared passion in a scientific field, to each other while being targeted for attacks. Until the truth inevitably surfaces and the battle between pride and anger vs love and understanding has to be won. Engaging flow in the storytelling that keeps you wanting to know what happens next.
I received an ARC from Netgalley and leaving my review voluntarily.
I was very grateful to have received at advance copy through Netgalley in exchange for a review. This was my first book to read by Maddison Michaels, but it will not be my last.
I requested the book because of the summary. Cousins who masquerade as each other is fun. Falling in love with a Duke who thinks you're someone else can be very painful.
I actually finished reading this book six weeks ago - procrastinating until I'm at my laptop and ready to type a review I could easily check for typos. That day never came. I'm still writing in on my cell. Fortunately, the story was memorable.
I really liked Evie even if she did always let her cousin talk her into risky schemes. She was smart, resilient, realistic, and she had dreams and passions.
The Duke of Hargrave had to grow on me. I get why Evie was immediately attracted to the dark handsome hero, but it took time for him to even consider that an American Heiress might be honest. Of course, this one was honest about her desires and her character but not her name or her background.
There was a dramatic uncovering and it might have been wrapped up a little too nearly; but all in all, I greatly enjoyed it. I recommend to anyone else who also find the summary interesting. I'm really looking forward to reading her cousin's story too!
I was lucky enough to get an arc of the book and was really looking forward to reading it.
The blurb sounded great and I started to get lost between the pages almost as soon as I downloaded the book.
The story was cute and I liked the characters even though there weren’t any big character developments to be found.
Most of the plot points weren’t really surprising but nonetheless I enjoyed the story as a whole.
The one thing that I truly struggled with was the writing style and the many many repetitions of words, character’s thoughts and informations throughout the book.
Once I stumble about something like this it’s hard for me to ignore it.
Even though I would read a sequel if the author happens to write the story of Aimee.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
