Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book I’m always looking for another new manga series to read. This was good but got a tad confusing at times. It definitely deviated from where I thought it’d go. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publish for this advanced copy.
I could not get into the manga. Read the whole thing and did not feel drawn into the story nor the need to see what happens next. Art is great.
2/5
Thank you for the ARC.
First volume and it has a slow build. You definitely meet the main character and all the questions start to build. This is a different take on Disney, welcoming you to perhaps the dark side. You'll definitely know these sinister Disney stars. Not many things make sense here. A few characters are presented, story line is not really flesh out. It does keep my interest to what I hope is a bigger moving next volume.
I just reviewed Disney Twisted-Wonderland, Vol. 1 by Yana Toboso; Wakana Hazuki; Sumire Kowono. #DisneyTwistedWonderlandVol1 #NetGalley
The artwork alone makes this manga worth reading! I really enjoyed this manga even though I did not have any previous knowledge of the video game. My only snag is sometimes getting characters mixed up. I am excited to see what else the storyline has to offer as the series continues.
Thank you to VIZ Media and NetGalley for a chance to read the ARC.
Beautiful art and an interesting storyline. I’m unfamiliar with the game but am a big Disney fan. I loved the Disney Easter eggs spread throughout the story. I wanted to learn a little more about the characters and dive more into the lore; I’m hoping that comes in future volumes. I think this would be great for middle readers who love manga and Disney. Thank you NetGalley and VIZ Media for the arc.

Background ~
I feel like I should give a little context to this before truly jumping right into the middle of things. I grew up watching AmiYoshiko on YouTube, and she adored this app. So, of course, the second the app dropped in English you knew I jumped on the hype train. Only, I wasn't very impressed with the app when it finally dropped, it was certainly fun, but just not enough to keep it downloaded. Then, low and behold, NetGalley dropped this bad boy, and I could not say no.
The Story ~
Have you played Twisted Wonderland? Then this plot will be incredibly familiar, because outside of our main character, the storyline feels cookie-cutter to the app's story. You wind up in a magic world without magic, you get kicked into the decrepit building and expected to clean it up in Cinderella due fashion. The villains bully you but sometimes you confuse it for flirting. The list continues.
The Art ~
Honestly 10/10, very on point for the app and overall very appealing to the eyes. I have no complaints here and honestly part of the reason I gave this 2 stars.
Overall ~
It is kind of inevitable that I would end up here, but that does not mean that there aren't going to be plenty of fans who adore this book. In fact, I truly hope many people do! I just did not personally enjoy it.
This manga follows some of the story arc from the Queen of Hearts set in Twisted Wonderland. The art was completely black and white like a traditional manga, and was fantastically done. The story was fun and read like you were playing a game. Very enjoyable overall!
Thank you so much to NetGalley for the Advance Copy of this manga! I had high expectations going into this manga and I was not disappointed! I have now been playing this game for a year and have loved the story telling so I was curious to see how it would get adapted into Manga form!
The real neat things about this Manga is that you don't need to play the games or have any experience with it a all. It's slowly introducing the lore that has already been presented before putting its own twist on it. They have made it so the manga is its own story and I love that. The illustrations are stunning and the details in them are simply breathtaking. The full page picture of NRC blew my mind!!!
I'm so excited for this volume and all the other volumes to come !!! I know they're going to tell an amazing story and I want to be there for every page of it!!!!
Thank you Netgalley and Viz Media for this advanced copy.
This manga was supposed to attract the reader to get to know more about this series and the game, sadly, It wasn't interesting at all. Our main character was not smart. He was from Japan and he got Disneyland in his country, but he didn't know any references for disney villain at all. Such a big plot hole here.
However I really love the art. It was beautiful. But the story itself was really bad.
I love that Disney is venturing out into other forms of media like manga. I haven't played the game so I didn't have a ton of context for the story other than what I knew secondhand. It was interesting, and I'm sure if you liked the game you'd enjoy it, for me personally it was a little weird.
I am not a manga reader, but I am a Disney lover, so I thought that I would give this a try.
Unfortunately, the Disney tie in came way too late in the story for me. I was very lost and confused for the first half of the story, and only because it was short and I was actively looking for the Disney did I follow through to the end. The second-half I found much more enjoyable, but because I missed much of the lead up, it didn't make much sense to me. Again, I'm probably not the target audience for this book, so please take my review with a grain of salt.
First and foremost thank you Netgalley for the Arc
The art in this book was mind blowing, I love the character designs and the suit of cards uniforms, absolutely fantastic. The Disney references are quirky and fun and the storyline was quite interesting, I can’t wait to read more of this series. A definite must have for fans of manga and Disney alike. You won’t regret this one!
This one is not a bad start to a series but it is not great. I do wish they had delved more into the actual Disney villains, instead of just glossing over them. The "off with your head" comments tends to get repeated often and it becomes annoying after a while, but it doesn't deter me from still wanting to see where the story is going in future volumes. I do like the graphics/drawings.
This was originally published in Japanese, and this was cute and yet exciting. You'll meet some great characters, and others who'll already are on your list to despise. There are several DISNEY Easter Eggs throughout the book, and the cliffhanger will leave you waiting for the second volume. I do hope to see more of the other DISNEY characters brought out as the series progresses. This is great for teenagers who are diehard fans of Manga and DISNEY alike.
This unfortunately didn't resonate with me. I think I was expecting something a little darker and this felt so far a little basic. Maybe it'll improve later but not the strongest start in my opinion.
I love Disney Villains and anything inspired by them. This manga centers around a magic academy that has houses modeled after 7 Disney villains. The entire manga is based on a popular mobile video game that I have played. This first volume seems to stick pretty closely to the story framework laid out by the mobile game.
You can see the heavy influence of Alice in Wonderland in this first volume - you have Yu, our MC land in a strange world via some kind of magic or portal, much like Alice in her adventures of falling down a rabbit hole or going through a looking glass. There are MC must figure out the rules of the new world they are all the while trying to find their way back home. I think the book did a great job of navigating the "trapped in another world" trope.
The characters are fun - I love the monster cat, Grim and I'm hoping to see them become a little more three-dimensional as the series progresses.
Though I love the cover art, I wasn't a huge fan of some of the action sequence art throughout - I found it a little busy and hard to figure out what was happening.
The premise is good , although it already relies a bit too heavily on Disney tropes. It could be a great introductory manga for upper elementary kids.
I am a life-long Disney fan, and I have also delved a bit into the world of manga. So, a marriage of the two sounded interesting. This particular manga is based on Twisted-Wonderland, a mobile video game. The opening chapters of the game are reflected in parts of this volume's adaptation.
The story handles well the classic "stranger in a strange land" trope - a strange land where classic Disney films are part of the history and the classic Disney villains are celebrated as leaders. I enjoy all of the references - from phrases ("off with your head") to locations (the cottage near the mine and a haunted mansion) and more.
The artwork is also very well done. Manga very often utilizes the school uniform style, but here we get it with stylistic flare. The inking is especially well-done, especially when it comes to patterns that help to make fabrics pop off the page.
This is a story I will be interested in continuing to follow as it unfolds. With so many different kingdoms introduced, there is plenty of material opportunity for years worth of releases.
I was surprised by this manga's direction with the Twisted -Wonderland game idea.
I love the idea of a team-building storyline, but this first volume was very mundane; it didn't do the job of a first volume to capture the attention enough. I would give the next volume a chance, but I do not want to continue.
A little disappointing. BUT I will say the art style is LOVELY!
