Instant connection as Kali Bane, red haired enchantress, meets Adam McKay, heir to Clan McKay. He is tasked with keeping her in a lonely tower so she will ‘learn her lesson’ and go home to marry an English Sassenach. Yet, his father has revenge on his heart and plans to use Kali for his purposes.
Kali is strong willed and brave – no one is going to use her. Adam struggles to stay away from Kali as they both fall in love. She plans for no man to control her ever again. Kali will do whatever it takes to protect her sisters. Only, she has come to love the orphans and friends she has made while at the McKay keep.
As the first in the House of Bane series, this is a perfect beginning. There are enough Scottish Highlanders to cause Kali and Adam no end of grief as they carefully navigate around each other in this journey to their HEA. The three men who would bring evil to their lives are dealt with quickly and quietly.
the McKay clan in the Highlands, warning them that she’s a witch. There is no welcome at the McKay castle only an aging laird prone to fits of temper who believes that Kali is, in fact, a witch. She is little more than a hostage, kept from sight from almost all but Adam McKay, the laird’s son, whose hypnotic green eyes make her long for something forbidden. Kali is the only one who can protect her sisters from their father’s greedy machinations. But the longer she remains imprisoned in the McKay tower, the more Kali and Adam realize there are other forces at play. They’re both pieces in a silent, terrible game that could destroy everyone they’ve ever loved.
The first book in a new series. A well written book with strong characters. I loved both Kali & Adam, their attraction was immediate, their banter delicious, Kali has suffered much but is so strong & brave. Adam is swoon worthy but how could they have their HEA? I loved how Kali came to love & trust Adam & thoroughly enjoyed their rocky journey to a HEA. However I always feel a bit short changed when the villains don’t get their just desserts
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I thought this started out very promising, I liked Kali from the beginning, she is constantly verbally and physically abused by her father, but that doesn't stop her from protecting her sisters and standing up for herself. But when her father sends her away for refusing marriage to an Englishman and she meets Adam, son of the current Laird, and he's kind of a douche. He doesn't even start being nice to her until his dad banished her to a tower and tells her she's only allowed out at night. Of course, the first thing he notices is how gorgeous she is, but her father has said all these horrible things about her, the main one being that she's a witch, and Adam treats her accordingly.
I never really warmed to Adam or his romance with Kali. I just didn't like the way Adam interacted and treated Kali whenever they were together. Also while I like Kali, I didn't really feel like I connected to her, I preferred the secondary characters. The orphans were adorable, Heather was a great friend and Raini was kind of a hoot.
I think is a good book, it just didn't work for me.
I love a highlander romance and anything and everything related to Scotland, so this book had a head start for me. The Highlander’s Enchantress follows the story of Kali, the eldest daughter of an awful laird who banishes her to the Highlands to stay with a former neighbouring clan of the Bane’s, because she is a strong-willed woman who will not endure her father's heavy hand in silence. She is promised to marry an ambitious and disgusting English man, all because it will favour Kali’s father. Kali has been mistreated her whole life and, because of that, she does not trust men, with good reason. Once she arrives in clan Mackay’s land, she meets the heir to the land, Adam. Soon she will find that her new temporary home is not a safe place and she needs to be careful with who she trusts, and if she is brave enough to open her heart to love.
The Highlander’s Enchantress hooked me from the start, I found the main characters endearing as well as a solid assortment of secondary characters that gave the story a good pace. I love that it is a love story between two highlanders, I feel that this is not often the case, since most of the time one of the love interest is English and this trope is kind of overdone. It is a short read and very enjoyable. I would have loved a bit more of passion on the page, but it will be a good choice for those readers who do not enjoy the steamy scenes so much in romance.
3.5 Stars! This was a cute, quick read. It’s the first book in the ‘House of Bane’ series and can be read as a standalone. I absolutely loved Kali, the main female character. She was so kind and easy to love. Adam, the main male character, I liked MOST of the time but I was still rooting for him to get an HEA ending. Both of the characters were making demands of the other and Kali seems to have lived a tough life. Orphans, old ladies, sassy maids, sisters, possible witchcraft, best friends, forced weddings, awful Father’s and a HEA ending. I didn’t really get much romance from this book, it felt like insta-love, but it is a shorter book so I get it. All in all, it was a good book with a pretty good, smile inducing epilogue. This was my first time reading this author but I’d definitely read more of her works.

The Highlander’s Enchantress by Violetta Rand
House of Bane #1
Evil fathers to overcome, a clan and sisters to save, beautiful highland scenery, a spirited defiant female lead and a male lead who is enchanted at first sight by the woman he will marry.
What I liked:
* Kali: strong, fierce, loves her sisters, defiant, caring, defends the oppressed, sometimes makes less than wise choices, rather taken with Adam
* Adam: oldest son, clan MacKay heir, good friend and leader, obedient to his father though he is questioning recent decisions made, very taken with Kali
* The supporting characters: Raini (older seer), Heather (friend-servant), the 9 orphans, the three warrior friends of Adams – Sam, Joseph and James
* That it was an easy read and the major conflict faced by Adam and Kali was related to their fathers
* That it was easy to dislike the bad guys
* It was a quick easy read
* There will be more books in the series
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* The way women were treated as chattel and sold off in marriage for personal gain…and that those that “owned them” were could do anything they wanted to them
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Probably
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC – this is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
This was an absolute pleasure to read. You have Kali a strong woman who has had so much hate in her life being shipped off to the highlands. When she arrives she meets a person named Adam who has come to take her to his family castle. There Adam’s dad, the head of the clan, puts so much hate and unfairness upon Kali. Adam will not stand by and watch his father destroy the clan and the so many people he loves. Will Adam be able to fight for the right of his future and his clans? Will Kali be able to live a life without fear and finally be happy?
Thanks to Entangled for the ARC!
This is a fun, quick read. The characters are entertaining, and the banter is feisty. This was my first Scottish historical romance, and I thought it was very well done! I loved the history aspect and seeing how life in the highlands was like. The FMC is strong-minded, which I also adored. And the romance was full of tension and steamy!
If you just want a quick read romance, this is a good option.
First of all just want to say that this is definitely not a light read, and I would suggest checking out the content warnings before starting the book, as there are parts that could trigger some readers.
Now, this historical romance has a lot more fun in it than you might first think. Complex characters have big decisions to make. It is a stand alone book, but it does leave an opening for more. The pacing, chemistry, storyline, all were awesome. The setting and the side characters complemented the romance without overshadowing it, which I liked.
Kali Bane always tries to protect her sisters from the heavy hand of their father. Now she is being sent away. In the era this book is set ,women had no power against cruel or abusive men. Our heroine is naturally protective of the weak. That can cause her a lot of problems.
Adam McKay is the Laird's heir. The Clan is not happy with the behaviour of his father and now they have to house a woman known to cause problems wherever she goes. The last thing our hero needs is another disruptive person. This could bring huge changes in the whole clan.
This Highlander historical romance has a lot more fun in it than you might first think. Complex characters have big decisions to make. It is a stand alone book, but it does leave an opening for more. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Good fun.
Kali and Adam find love in the midst of turmoil. Kali is a fiery as her red hair. Despite all the trials in her life she maintains a positive attitude. Adam is heir to the Laird and only wants to do what’s right. This is not a long story but it packs a lot of punch. It has great characters and a plot that is well developed. Readers will enjoy a myriad of emotions as they read.
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing, LLC for the chance to read and review The Highlander's Enchantress by Violetta Rand.
I’m a big fan of regency romance, but despite the Outlander phase that the world went through, I never really got into highlander romance. I made an exception for this because the cover looked really interesting. And of course, don’t all of us have a soft spot for a red haired heroine after Misty?
This is my first Violetta Rand book, but this certainly isn’t the first one she’s written. Besides The Highlanders Enchantress, she’s written 15 other books, of which 3 are available on Kindle Unlimited; which is smart because if you like the first book in a series, you’ll be happy to buy the others in the series. The Highlanders Enchantress will be available on Kindle Unlimited on the 29th of May and I believe it will follow the same pattern.
The book is a fun one for the most part. The plot is different if you're a bit done with regency romance, but the storyline and attraction are simple enough to make it a chill read. We do have constant conflict that really escalates towards the end, but it's a romance novel so you know it'll end in a happy ending, and the low level conflict gives our heroine a chance to win our hearts.
But what I really disliked is that it all escalated far too quickly and is resolved far too quickly for you to get into it. One second someone gets stabbed and everything is over without anyone being really sad. That rush is what made this book meh for me and I was sad that I had read all of it only to be let down like this. And you can't even really get into the villains of the story; one is a monster and the other a guy with serious mental health issues (also terrible personality so you can't sympathise, but also possibly dementia or something).
All in all, the book just didn't work for me.
This was simple and easy book to read. Kali's father banished her to Scotland. She had to stay with the McKay clan but living as outcast. Kali mets Adam McKay and Adam was falls for Kali and risked everything by being on her side. Kali got on my nerves alottt! She was constantly rejecting him and giving mixed signals. I so wished I could’ve had a different female lead.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kali Bane is banished by her cruel father to the Highlands as payment for a long ago debt. She hopes to have escaped her wicked father’s reach, only to find that he has sent a missive ahead of her telling lies and slanders about her. The Mackay clan banishes her to a tower and forbids her to intermingle with them. But Kalie finds an unexpected friend in the Laird’s handsome son Adam Mackay. Can she deny her attraction? Will she ever be free of her father’s reach?
“She met his gaze then, her mouth suddenly dry. “If I ride with ye, we might be tempted to…” “To do this again?” He tugged her into his arms and slanted his mouth across hers. This time the kiss was urgent but tender, and she could not deny him, for her mouth opened instantly, her tongue seeking his, her sense filled with everything he had to offer - his woodsy scent, his raw power, the hint of mint on his breath, and everything else that force her to shut her eyes…” There are twists and turns that I didn’t expect, and there are a number of steamy scenes. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What do you do when you are sent off to the Highlands by your despicable father?! Kali Bane is a red headed harlot, temptress, witch- all of the above - based on her fathers claims because she refused to marry the man he chose for her. She’s sent off to fulfill an old debt where they use to live to get her under control. She’s alone and moved into the tower for punishment. Luckily she meets the Lairds son Adam and a group of orphan kids, and two new friends even those she’s suppose to be isolated. Going the Highlands is as suppose to be punishment but kali is actually getting to experience some new aspects of life away from her father. But she’s there for only so long until she can get back to her sisters - but leaving Adam and the Highlands will be harder than she thought. Easy and delightful read exploring the relationship between Kali and Adam and learning about the crazy ideas of witches back then!
When I saw my favorite HR couple on the cover, I knew that I had to read this book. This story was simple and easy to read. Kali's father hated her and banished her to Scotland. She had to stay with the McKay clan living like an outcast. Kali immediately met the Laird's handsome son, Adam McKay. Adam was struck by Kali's beauty and risked it all by defying his father. Kali was conflicted because she felt that she couldn't give her heart to Adam until she knew that her sisters were safe from their evil father. I got really annoyed with Kali when she rejected Adam again and again, even though he promised to reunite her with her sisters. There were some good secondary characters in this story and the romance was fairly low steam.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley and this is my honest review.
Received this book from the publisher as a fun weekend read and gosh I enjoyed it! Slow burn, soft romance with all the drama of Scottish-English conflicts. Thank you to Entangled and NetGalley for the advance copy!
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I do not know if this was the writing style or what but I just was not in love with this. The girl just had a really hard life and the men in it just did not do a whole lot to protect them. I just wished for more.
This book was absolutely SOOOO good, im obsessed. I didnt know highlander romances exist and now that I do idk if I can stop reading them. The story, the meaning and the characters were fantastic. It flowed so well with being as short as it is!
Amazing writing and amazing characters with a top notch plot can only mean an amazing book. I love them
The Highlander's Enchantress is a quick and predictable read. There's not much depth to the characters and the story is fast paced.
A simple read.
