Flight of the Firebird by Kenneth Johnson is a memoir style book with a delightful focus on Slavic magic. It reads well as a relatable pagan and academic text.
I was fascinated by the cover and then by the content. I read some anthropological books about Slavic people and their lore. This one is more of a memoir and talks about the people the author met and their lore.
Informative, interesting.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Flight of the Firebird is a book about Slavic magic and the author's extensive travels across Russia as he encounters mystics, healers, and spiritual seekers of the ancient Slavic magical world. The book focuses primarily on Russia and its rich earth based magical practices and folklore with little attention given to other Slavic peoples outside of Russia.
The book is written like a memoir, whereby the author discusses his journey across Russia as he meets various teachers and guides of the Slavic magical tradition. The book is rich with information about the origins, practices, and beliefs of Slavic paganism which was incredibly interesting to read about as there is very little information available about it in English. Learning about the occult beliefs of the Slavic people and how emmeshed it is in their culture was very eye opening. The countries that are home to the Slavic peoples are home to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes that have inspired their rich mythologies, stories, legends, and superstitions, which have been largely ignored by the west.
Overall a fascinating look at the Slavic people and their magical ways of being.
