Gripping, sleek thriller. I truly enjoyed it. The vibes were incredible, I just found the atmosphere to be so immersive. I'll gladly read more from this author and recommend this book to fans of the genre.
Enjoyed it, did not over stay it's welcome like a lot of thrillers I have recently been reading have been doing. Takes about as much time as it needs to and is interesting from beginning to end without being a slight at all.
Once upon a long time ago, Delia, Zee and Cara were three young girls who were best friends. But after a lakeside day spent together in the Pacific Northwest, only two of the teenagers returned home safely.
Already dealing with certain issues, the tragedy knocked Delia for a sixer. She withdrew into herself. Meanwhile Cara moved on, apparently seamlessly, leaving Delia behind.
But having never really come to terms with what(ever) happened to Zee, Delia is happy to unexpectedly hear from Cara some years later. The only problem is, shortly after this communication, it is Cara's turn to go missing...
Somewhat surprisingly given their estrangement - and perhaps driven by her unresolved feelings over Zee's disappearance - Delia then goes all out trying to find her second lost friend.
Deciding that her best lead is an Oregon-based women's organisation that Cara was involved with, the remaining member of the trio heads off there.
But what Delia finds is rather different from what she had expected. And the more she investigates, the more it seems clear that there are some sinister aspects to the group. All too soon, Delia finds that now, she is the one in danger...
This book has an interesting premise, and despite some inconsistencies, it delivers reasonably well on storytelling. There are a number of twists, and the discovery of the cult-like nature of the set-up Cara has been part of keeps the reader's interest engaged. Definitely worth checking out for those who are curious about cults, in particular!
A perfect summer read complete with a beautiful setting that's not all it seems, friends and frenemies, twists, and all the girlboss wellness cult-y vibes, questioning how far any of us would go for power and who we would hurt to keep it.
