I requested this audiobook for my daughter, who loves a good fairy tale. We set it up for a long car journey and I expected her to listen to a couple of the stories before switching to something different. Not so, she loved every minute of it and listened to the entire audiobook in one go.
As a parent, I really appreciated the strong feminist messages in each story and the strong independent female lead characters. It's perfect balance of entertaining and empowering your child. I thought it was fantastic that it audiobook featured stories from around the globe, so you could learn about other cultures and engage in new stories. The narration was spot on too.
I know both myself and my daughter would love to listen to further audiobooks from this author.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a chance to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Myself and my little one really enjoyed listening to this book over dinner for a few weeks. They were eager every day to find out the next fairy tale and who it was about, it's the first audiobook they've listened to and they want more!
I really loved the variety of different mythology from all over the world that we got throughout the book, I learned a lot of new tales myself from listening to it. The narrator was fantastic, she read at a brilliant pace and made very subtle changes in her voice for the different characters, she was very enjoyable to listen too.
Id love to have more of these books to listen to with my little one.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to listen to in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
***AUDIO BOOK VERSION***
Fairy Tales for Fearless Girls is a wonderful collection of stories for girls from all around the world. I was familiar with a few of these stories, such as Atalanta and Bradamante, but not all, so it was a great book to listen to. Full of diversity and inspirational characters, this book gives a more modern outlook on the happy endings we can achieve for ourselves, which goes beyond just getting married like a traditional fairytale leaves us with. The reader/listener is taken on adventures where they learn that happiness can be found also from forging a career we love, going on adventures, and through family and hobbies (just for an example). The narrator is great to listen to and narrates each story well. I'd say this book is suitable for children aged 10+ to adulthood.
Fairy Tales for Fesrless Girls
By Anita Ganeri
Rating: 4 stars
This books is a collection of short tales where girls are featured as strong and I thought it a great read for a young audience. I thought the length of each tale to be great for one before bed if you are reading this to children and i can also see it being a favourite that youll be re-reading. I also enjoy that the tales were not retellings of popular myths but were retellings of lesser known stories from around the world which elevates this book. Definitely fairytales for a modern audience!
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc of this book!
What a fantastic idea for a children's book. Fairytale princesses who don't need prince charming to save them. They are perfectly capable of saving themselves (and everyone else) and do so.
This book is a must read for little girls
A great variaty of fairy tales from around the world.
But to me the girls didn´t feel very fearless and the stories where not very interesting.
The stories had the same problems as normal fairy tales just with a female main character.
Thank you so much for letting me listen to this audiobook. I very much enjoyed listening to these stories, they are fun and entertaining. The girls are all really feraless.
This is a really great selection of myths and fairytales from all around the world. I really appreciated how instead of changing famous stories in order to make them more ‘girl power’, the author drew on existing tales that are perhaps lesser known, but portray women with much more agency.
There will most likely be a couple of stories each reader is familiar with, and an introduction to some wonderful new tales too. The writing style that whimsical, timeless feel that is the hallmark of fairytales. There is also excellent narration from Isabel Adomakoh Young, who tells the stories in an incredibly engaging way. I can imagine they would make for great one-at-a-time bedtime stories, or be a good audiobook for the car which the whole family could enjoy.
I received a free copy for review. All opinions are my own.
I listened to this with my kids, reading one story before bed and it was a hit! They loved the creatures and strong girls. Before listening each night they wanted to look at the cover and point out the details so I can imagine they would of loved a physical copy too! The narrator was great, had character but was also very clear for them to follow. Would recommand!
We really enjoyed this audiobook and each story is about 10 minutes long. Love the fact that not only are the stories from a wide range of cultures and countries but showcase strong, fearless women and girls breaking cultural and societal norms. Usually outwitting the males and proving that girls are not just waiting to be rescued or married. Great that my daughter has the opportunity to hear tales like this.
A fascinating collection of fairy tales, not like anything I read as a child, depicting courageous, smart, independent women. Magic, the expectations to get married and male characters thinking they a're god's gift still remain. But it is set against a backdrop of female empowerment. I loved them. Like any collection there were some stories I preferred over others. The narrator did a great job in ensuring each tale is distinctive and I was pleased they were stories from across the globe - rather than being Euro-centric. Highly recommended.
This book is really good, I really enjoy fairytale retellings, especially in a feminist key.
I love Anita Ganeri writing style, every story is different from one another but they all have the same vibe/feeling to it, that really ties the whole book together.
I currently have children (and I won't in the near future hopefully) but I'll keep this book in mind for my future kids, because it is the perfect anthology of fairy tales for young minds.
Retellings of a number of fairy tales from different countries, with young girls as the main characters using their intelligence and bravery to save the day! This is a particularly great read for any budding feminists who want to see themselves as the main characters of the stories instead of your traditional fairy tales where the dashing prince types always save the day. I would have liked the stories to be a little longer and a little more developed but overall it was an easy read and an inspirational read that will be great for kids!
I received a free copy of this book. All views are my own.
3.5-4*
A sweet and feisty collection of fairy tales, a great choice for younger girls, that showcase how the world for women needs to be more than just marrying the perfect price.
I enjoyed the diversity of this collection and the stories from all over the world.
Though not my favourite collection of fairy tales, I'd still recommend the audiobook as a great way to share these stories.
Beautiful and diverse stories. The girls were feisty, outspoken and so aware of the patriarchy and how to challenge it. A great example of literature. Only wish the stories were narrated by different people - perhaps from the appropriate cultures!
4.5 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and Arcturus Digital audio for the advance audiobook.
Overall I enjoyed the short stories within this book and found the readers voice and interpretation of the story fun and interesting.
A good set of stories for children and an easy listen.
A beautiful and fun set of stories with strong female leads and great messages. Although I am not the intended audience for this, I thought this was a great set of stories perfect for parents to read to their children and take them on an adventure with good morals.
3.0/5.0
Despite this being a children's book I couldn't help but be enraptured by the diverse stories being told. Focusing on strong women and girl's who aren't afraid to be their own hero of their story.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to listen to the audiobook.
I will start this review by saying I don't think I am the intended audience for this book. However, I do think it was well written and enjoyed the audio version. The stories are ones I had not heard before which was a nice surprise and I found them quite enjoyable. They flowed well and had great underlying messages. I would absolutely recommend this book to parents to read to their kids at bedtime or to older kids as they begin to explore reading.
The stories in this compilation of fairytales were fantastic and broad, from all over the world. I enjoyed the narrator and felt that she had a good voice for a children’s book. However, I feel like with children’s audiobooks it needs to be clearer when one story ends and the next begins either with a little beginning and ending music or something similar. Even as an adult I found myself unsure and getting confused as to which story I was listening to.
