The Fury of Kings is a brilliant edition to the well-loved genre of fantasy epics. You can see Moule’s appreciation for the likes of Martin and Sanderson in his work, though his story offers something new and exciting, full to the brim with political intrigue and sophisticated worldbuilding. I was hooked from the very start of the eerie prologue, and really enjoyed listening to the audiobook. The narrator did a fantastic job and really made the reading experience more fun. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next.

Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for providing me with the eARC. All opinions are my own.

The Fury of Kings is a sweeping epic fantasy set in a rough and medieval-style world with political strife ripe for turmoil. With multiple storylines whirling together, the plot tightens a gripe as each event and step advances. Similar to George R.R. Martin’s work for adding serious levels of complexity of character, cultural history, violence, and drama.

Colin Mace, the narrator was fantastic (5 stars), and I highly recommend listening to the story.

This debut is worth all the applause. It lagged it some areas - but it did not disappoint. I could not believe this was a debut!Political intrigue.Complicated family.
I loved Pherri - the struggle to meet the expectation of being her father's daughter. While only be considered a girl - Pherri fights her desperation to contribute, pushing against imposed limitations.
Just so well done.

Audio narration by Colin Mace: 5 stars
Book: 3.5 stars

The Fury of Kings opens with an intriguing prologue: a mysterious people in the mountains, something potentially mystical going on, and an interesting landscape. The story from there though mostly focuses on an interesting but not particularly fresh or unique story of succession wars, political plots, scheming, and a bit of magic thrown in. There isn't a lot of innovation here, but the audio performance really helped to pull me in. Colin Mace brought a lot of life to the characters and made each character feel unique. You could tell a lot about the characters just from the narration.

It's clear the author took inspiration from Martin, though this book is definitely written with a more modern style. If you enjoy that kind of story with a focus on furious kings and lords (pun intended), schemes on top of schemes and the like, you'll find something to enjoy here. This is paired with some coming of age elements as some of the younger characters are finding out who they want to be over the course of the book.

My main issue was that the structure of the POVs in the book felt pretty off to me. There were some characters we did not focus on a lot, but then would suddenly spend a lot of time with them, and some characters that seemed like they'd be important but ended up having very little screentime. There were some elements that I felt were focused on too much, while elements I would have loved to see more of (namely the events teased in the prologue) were largely left out of this entry.

Overall this is a solid book that just very much feels like a first novel from a debut author. The book is fairly well written, the story and characters just interesting enough, but some of the mechanics still need some improvement. This is perfectly understandable for a debut, and I have no doubt that Moule will improve as he continues to write.

This is an epic new fantasy series, great for fans of G.R.R Martin as this is full of rich worldbuilding and brilliant characters shown through multiple POV's. For a debut this was astounding, full of engrossing storylines which you can't wait to see connect and an incredible narrator, Colin Mace, who really suits the book and genre. I can't wait to read the rest of this story and see how the story will continue to unfold.

I must confess I am not a big epic fantasy reader as I can count one hand how many times I have read this genre. However,  the trailer for The Fury of Kings coupled with the knowledge that magic would be one of the features, I felt compelled to pick it up.  Fury of Kings, the first book in the Erland Saga and debut release for author R. S. Moule delivered a scintillating tale filled with interesting characters. nail biting action and drama to keep the reader turning the pages.

The Fury of Kings started the Erland Saga on an exciting note. From the first page I knew this would be an interesting read and it did not disappoint. Moule transported readers to fascinating medieval, patriarchal, breathtaking world. A world where secrets, deceit, betrayal and greed prevail. As this is the first book in the series the world developed at a steady pace as a result giving the reader time to appreciate the culture, the scenery, the setting and the history.

The story features a wide range of characters of varying ages. Ages range from middle grade to adult. We see the younger characters slowly finding their footing when faced with the realization that the world isn't all fun and games. It was interesting seeing their willingness to face the danger and fight for their country despite their inexperience.

In the first couple of pages tragedy struck, placing the king of Erland's throne in jeopardy and setting the groundwork for war. Attempts were made to secure the kings throne and avoid the fall out. Despite these attempts war was inevitable.  The battle scenes were intense and there were moments where I feared for characters I have come to love. Moule's description plunged me right in the middle of the battle.

At over 500 pages one would not have expected a cliff-hangar, however, the unexpected occurred. Now I am eagerly awaiting the next book so I can continue the journey in this magnificent and epic world.

Narration
Colin Mace did an excellent job in bringing the story to life. He had a challenging job of narrating a story with a wide cast of characters of both genders, ages, classes, and personality. This was my first time experiencing his work he left a lasting impression. I’ll definitely listen in to more of his work. On a side note, an entire chapter was missing from the audio book.

When I heard there was a new release perfect for fans of George R.R. Martin, John Gwynne and Raymond E. Feist, I couldn't resist getting cozy with a new chonky read.

The Fury of King's is the first book in the Erland Saga by R.S. Moule. I had the pleasure of reading and listening to this book and both formats are engrossing! The narration is exceptionally done by Colin Mace who you may recognize as the voice for The Bloodsworn Trilogy. He knows exactly how to narrate each character and fluctuate between action, emotion and scene.

The writing style of Moule is immersive and imaginatively descriptive. Like most epic sagas, this is a slow build to the action. Moule lays the character attributes, world building and history down slowly all while sprinkling a sinister atmosphere soaking in a rising tension. I loved that he didn't hold back from the gruesome and barbaric.

The story is told from multiple POVs and even with the depth it is not a complicated or hard to follow read. Each character is bringing a unique perspective that drops little eggs that tie together. Personally, I love Pherri and cannot wait to see where the next book takes her. Sigac comes in second with his completely ruthless personality.

This was an utter pleasure to read. I'm looking forward to the next release and cannot thank the author and publisher enough for giving me a new world to enjoy. If you like dark forces, magic, political maneuvering and sagas that keep you sucked in, than you'll want to chevk this one out. True rating 4.5/5.

I had such little expectation coming into this, but R.S. Moule has done such a fantastic job here that I'll be reading more as they come out.

The worldbuilding is fantastic, and the relationships that are developed throughout the book steal the show. Which is impressive, considering how gripping the novel is.

This is a great debut. I'll be buying this, too. Well done, I look forward to more!

I requested this one because it might be an upcoming title I would like to review on my Youtube Channel. However, after reading the first several chapters I have determined that this book does not suit my tastes. So I decided to DNF this one.

In the synopsis for this book I saw I compared GRR Martin or John Gwynne books and I can see the similarities but the it is a disservice to the author to just be lazy and state that, the author has written a tale rich in world building and character development with some intriguing possibilities going forward, Colin Mace does a great job with his narration
