The dragon is dead. Halloween is in full force in Ashland, Oregon. Jules, Carlos, and the Torte crew are in a parade of costumes. But things turn crazy when the dragon ends up dead.. Anton Dudley , dog trainer, is or was the dragon. Who killed him and why? Marcia made public threats and Jax wanted her poodle to be the top dog . It's a dog vs dog in the world of Shakespeare. Could Marcia have done the deed. Was Jax angry enough to carry out a murder? Jules has to find a way to clear things up without becoming a victim herself. Non stop action from the beginning
If you plan to read any of the Bakeshop mysteries, I recommend you stock up on baked goods, cookies, delicious sandwiches or soups, as this series will have you craving goodies. Juliet and Lance are knee deep in another murder investigation after Juliet finds a body near Torte on Halloween. The one plot technique I very much enjoy in this series is that Juliet and Lance don't ever do any "too stupid to live" things when they investigate. There is always opportunity in many cozy mysteries for the lead characters to put themselves in jeopardy, but thankfully Ellie Alexander doesn't think that is necessary to make her books interesting and exciting In this book an expensive mah jongg set contains a mysterious message of death, then someone dies. This series is suspenseful and delicious. Wish I lived near Ashland, Oregon so I could visit Torte.
Great seasonal addition to this series set in Ashland. Get reacquainted with some familiar characters all while trying to find out whodunnit!
This was a super cute cozy mystery and once again I didn't realize I was jumping into the series in the middle but it was still a good read. This was my 1st book by Ellie Alexander but definitely won't be my last! I am now going to go back and read the first 16 books in the series to get caught up so that I can be ready for the next installment in the series!
The only thing I was sad about was that there were no recipes at the end of the book that were mentioned in the book! Please add them!
Catch Me if You Candy is due to be published August 22, 2023 by Minotaur Books. The 17th book in the BakeshopMystery series by Ellie Alexander.
It's Halloween time in Ashland, Oregon, and Jules and her staff at Torte are busy making seasonal dishes. In this theoretical town everyone dresses up in to costume and walks from the library to the plaza in a big parade. People come from all over to enjoy all of the festivities in this quaint little town. Once Carlos and Jules closes up the Bakeshop they run into someone slumped over in a dragon costume. They instantly call 911 and find out it’s the local dog dog trainer.Could the unexplained death be related to a mysterious old mahiong set that has just been purchased? And who tried to sabotage King George--maybe his arch nemesis, Pippa the poodle's owner?
Will Jules and Lance find out who’s behind this awful murder?
His was such a cute little Halloween Cozy. I just loved the characters, and the Halloween vibes throughout the whole story!
Thank you Netgalley, Ellie Alexander and Minotaur books for allowing me to read this cute little Cozy!
It’s Halloween in Ashland Oregon. The town goes all out to celebrate and Torte, Jules’ bakeshop, is no different. Things take a scary turn when Juliet and her husband discover a body outside the bakeshop. Is the murder somehow related to the mysterious note found in a mahjong set? Or does it have something to do with casting at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Jules and Lance will do their best to find the murderer, without becoming victims themselves. I love this series. The characters are engaging. The cozy mysteries hold my interest. Towards the end of Catch Me If You Candy, Lance hints at changes ahead in his life. Now I really can’t wait for the next one! Five Stars!!
The next in the Bakeshop Cozy Mystery series finds Ashland in the middle of Halloween season. When a dog trainer is murdered, Jules investigates to find the culprit. Another fun mystery in this series! Having it set around Halloween added a lot of fun ambiance.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This mystery was full of twists and turns, and the ending was not what I expected.
I enjoy the characters very much. They fit together nicely and manage to make me wish I was with them while looking for clues. I like that the book doesn’t just end when the killer is found but gets more information. The ending on this did feel like it’s maybe the end of the series, lots of talk about change.
It’s Halloween season in Ashland, and Juliet Capshaw and her bakeshop crew are hard at work. Following the massive holiday parade, Juliet and her husband Carlos have cleaned up Torte and are on their way to meet friends when they find a body collapsed outside their door. The man is Anton, dog trainer, dressed as a dragon. Jules is particularly shaken by this because a few days earlier, she had found a disconcerting note in her mother’s best friend’s new mahjong set. While Juliet, her mother, and Carlos want to believe this is coincidence, there is also the connection of one of their mahjong friends and Anton. Juliet just can’t let it go, and hopefully she figures everything out before the killer hurts anyone else.
I wanted to find this far-fetched, but there are some pet owners who are simply ridiculous. I have 6, and I know exactly how far I would go to keep them safe, but that is safety not fame. I felt the mystery dragged at times. While I know that many twists are expected, it seemed disjointed at times.
I like the main characters, but I would really like for Juliet and Carlos to have their lives expanded. There’s no need to read from the beginning (I didn’t) because the author is very good about supplying relevant background, and not spoiling previous books. However, it seems the character development progression appears to be stalled.
Overall, I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
I absolutely adored this book! The cover drew me in, and it was the perfect cozy mystery for the fall season!
This continues to be one of my favorite cozy mystery series! I loved revisiting Ashland and all the characters. Looking forward to the next one in the series!
Halloween is upon Ashland. Jules has told Ramiro all about the popular Halloween traditions. Jule's Mom orders pastries for her Mahjong group. Wendy shows off this stunningly valuable Mahjong set. She found it at the Hospice shop. They find a note about a dragon dying. Marcia tells everyone that her dog has been given the role of King George and then tells of the drama of the pups.
After the Halloween parade, Carlos and Jules happen upon a man dressed in a dragon costume propped up against the bakeshop. The man later dies. Lance & Jules start asking questions about who killed the dragon.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved all the baking. I'm seriously craving pumpkin bread. I'm excited to see what happens next for Jules and Carlos.
First, loved the cute cover. This series is a favorite of mine, so I was eager to dive in and fully enjoy my visit to Ashland, Oregon, with Juliet Montague Capshaw, aka Jules, and her family and friends. As the main character's name might suggest, Ashland is rather a haven for Shakespearean buffs from all around the world. Ol' Willy Shakespeare doesn't play a major role in this story but the theater is central. I mean, it's almost worthy of Shakespeare to have a story centered around two feuding stars, well, sorta. Make that two dogs, who don't seem to be feuding but, oh, my, their humans are. Then, their dog trainer, dressed as a dragon, is murdered. Jules and husband Carlos have the misfortune of finding his body outside Torte, Jules' bakeshop, as they exit after a day of Halloween fun spread throughout the entire town. Given that Jules' step-dad, a Shakespeare fan himself, is heading the investigation, it's no surprise that Jules finds herself investigating, er, just asking questions. Who killed the dragon guy?
Mystery aside, make sure you eat before you start reading. If you go into it hungry, you're bound to work up an appetite. Lots of food/baking talk, not to mention coffee brewing. Jules and Carlos used to be chefs for a cruise ship and their experience with international styles and blends is obvious. They've also assembled a top-notch crew who we also get to know a bit more about as the story progresses. There's even romance in the air. And, oh, my. That Halloween parade would be something to see. The author does an excellent job of making you feel like you are there. What costume would you be wearing? The various costume choices are both a hoot and revealing of character.
But, on to the murder. I'm not going to detail the plot as others will, but a few teasers. Will Carlos' son Ramiro continue to be an easy fit into the family? How strong must a coffee named Burial Grounds be? Is Jax the ultimate stage-dog mom? If so, she would win the annoyance award. What does King George think of it all? Did you know they make a special doggie nail polish? What does Mahjong have to do with anything? What's going on with Lance? And, oh, never mind. Seriously, you just need to read this one. It's fun and will not only make you think but make you hungry.
Thanks #NetGalley and #StMartin'sPress - #MinotaurBooks for letting me spend Halloween with Jules' and the gang. They're all people I feel like I know and, hmm, all those not so subtle hints about the future at the end. Can't wait.
Following Ashland’s the annual Halloween parade, Jules Capshaw finds a dead dragon outside of her bakeshop. The person inside the costume was stabbed to death, and the murder reminds Jules of an ominous note that her mom’s friend discovered in a vintage mahjong set that she recently purchased from the local thrift store. Even though she knows she shouldn’t conduct her own investigation, Jules can’t stop asking questions and searching for suspects.
This is the first novel in the Bakeshop Mystery series that I’ve read, and I found myself at a disadvantage because I didn’t know who any of the main characters were and their relationships to the main characters were not always explained. My main reason for requesting the ARC was the Halloween theme, and that did not disappoint. Ashland, Oregon, really knows how to celebrate the holiday. The book was well written, but the plot dragged at times during the middle. There were some twists and turns and the killer turned out to be someone that I didn’t really suspect, but the big reveal of the killer’s identity was rather anticlimactic.
The 17th installment in the Bake Shop Mysteries brings another death to the PNW. I enjoyed the storyline and return of Bethany and her brownies!
After the towns annual Halloween parade, Jules finds the body of a man right in front of her bakeshop, dressed in a dragon costume. Naturally Jule's gets drawn into the investigation. along with her sidekick, Lance. This was a fun quick read with likeable main characters and plenty of red herrings. I was surprised by who the killer turned out to be. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this free ARC to read and review.
This was a fun story to follow set at Halloween time. A guy dressed as a dragon gets offed. Looks like it all might be tied to a couple of dogs getting their 15 minutes of fame. For me the best part is Jules and her staff and all the things Jules makes in the kitchen. Just love these bakeshop mysteries.
Ellie Alexander does it again. I feel like I know everyone in Ashland and I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out.
3 stars
Strong start but drags quite a bit in the middle. I pushed to finish it. I do not believe I will read any more in this series. It's a shame because the characters and the relationships are nice and relatable.
The mystery is just way to far fetched for me.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley.
This is one of my favorite cozy series. I think that's largely because I'd like to live in Ashland and buy treats from Torte every day! The world feels so creative and comfy and charming. I like Jules, her family, and the other regulars who populate the town, so it's always a great escapist read for me.
This particular entry isn't my favorite. Jax's rabid obsession with Pippa getting cast in the play feels too over the top, and the writing just doesn't have quite the layers and relationships I'm used to. It all feels a bit one-note to me. That said, the book still gave me a few hours of enjoyable reading time! Just not quite up to the series' standard, that's all.
