James Herriot’s love for animals is reflected in this collection of stories. I enjoyed reading it and recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher, but was not required to leave a review.
I have always adored James Harriot. This book is another of his exceptional ones. Filled with wonderful stories we have come to associate with Mr Hariot. I cant wait to read is again!
A fun revisit to books I read decades ago. Excerpts from the original books are mixed with stories of the real-life people and events the books were based on. Not the place to start reading Herriot as the flow is always interrupted, but a nice mix of biography and memory for all who've read the earlier books.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the advance copy to review.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF JAMES HERRIOT
by James Herriot
This is an exciting autobiography book composed of James Herriot's many adventures as a rural veterinarian and his children's memories of different escapades.
Since I own several of his books, I knew this book would also be enjoyable. Highly recommend it.
James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred "Alf" Wight. He often went beyond the call of duty to take care of a sick or injured animal, such was his love for God's creatures.

Mixing short selections from all of Herriot's books with information about the author's real-life, this book is a delight for Herriot fans. Alf Wight, Herriot's actual name, along with his colleagues, family, and clients figure in this volume which has ben masterfully edited.
Great look at real man behind the lovely James Herriot stories. This book contains so much interesting information. Many true-life events and people were a part of the stories Alf Wight created.
I especially enjoyed the Introduction to the book, which I can honestly say is a first for me.
I think all fans of Mr. Wright’s books, the television series or movie would enjoy this behind the scenes book. Entering the world of James Herriot is always a wonderful place to be!
I want to thank St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for giving me the pleasure of reading the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.
James Wight’s children have provided background to their father’s stories! It is a delightful companion to all of the James Herriot stories people have in their collection. The background gives the reader a glimpse into the actual life of the famous veterinarian. Their father’s tales of a country vets life come alive again and bring chuckles all over again.
I grew up seeing James Herriot books often but I never read them - there was always something else I wanted to read, and in some ways, I’m glad I waited - because I don’t know that I would have read them with the same appreciation as I have now.
This collection is a wonderful read ❤
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the DRC!
I received a free copy of The Wonderful World of James Herriot, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I love the tv show All Creatures Great and Small, I have never heard of James Herriot before the tv show. I loved reading about the real characters behind the tv show, especially the Farnon brother, and of course James, Helen, and Mrs. Hall. I really enjoyed this book.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this ARC of 'The Wonderful World of James Herriot.'
I read my first James Herriot book back in the early 1980s, my family used to watch the original BBC series religiously and I've watched the new version from ITV/PBS so I'm smack, bang the target audience for this book.
And it's lovely. A long foreword/introduction from his family and the use of excerpts from the stories to link back to Alf Wright, the real James Herriot, and his real life in the Yorkshire Dales make it a very nostalgic and personal read. The inspirations behind many of the people and places fictionalized in his stories are revealed throughout the book. I've read quite a bit about the man and the places over the years and there was plenty here that was new to me - his struggles with physical and mental health issue prime among them.
The sections are organized around themes - animals, places, etc. - and while there are some references to earlier chapters there are slightly repetitive elements in some cases as if these were written as stand-alone essays rather than part of a fuller piece. Doesn't spoil the enjoyment one iota, though.
I love this and any fan of the books, TV series old or new, and films will also love it.
As wonderfully entertaining and heartwarming as the original James Herriot’s books, The Wonderful World of James Herriot presents the real people behind the beloved characters and provides a background for the episodes related in the books. Funny, witty and engaging. Absolutely easy to read and enjoyable. Just make sure not to read it at night, you’ll be laughing out loud.
Give this a try, you won’t be disappointed.
James Herriot has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. I love reading the different experiences and stories that he provides. This little collection definitely did not disappoint. It was enjoyable to read all the stories that gathered here. Definitely recommend to any Herriot-lover or animal lover alike.
