Her ex is hellbent on destroying her. How far will she go to stop him?
Vanessa and Curtis have just moved to an idyllic house in the seaside town of Whitstable. Their life there is wonderful, until Vanessa’s ex-boyfriend Hayden shows up out of the blue.
Hayden is not only brash and unpredictable with a warped sense of humour, he also seems intent on making life very difficult for Vanessa, who hasn't seen him since she was sixteen.
As Hayden causes more and more disruption in their lives, Curtis begins to realise that he has some kind of bizarre hold on Vanessa.
And when she suggests a plan to remove Hayden from their lives forever, Curtis becomes convinced she's hiding some big secret from her past.
But has Vanessa underestimated how dangerous and unpredictable Hayden is? How far will he go to get what he wants? And how far will she go to stop her perfect life from being destroyed?
Holy thrilling rollercoaster. I was hooked from the beginning. The characters were perfectly flawed (I said what I said), and the plot was perfectly written. Will recommend to others.
This captivating book is a thrilling page-turner with intriguing twists. Vanessa's secrets add depth to the story, keeping me hooked. The pace has its moments, but I was driven to uncover the full picture. Flawed yet relatable characters made me reflect on my own choices. The genre-blurring narrative combines murder mystery and supernatural elements. While some parts felt awkward or cheesy, unexpected events and genuine moments kept me engaged. Trust becomes uncertain in Vanessa's haunting past. Robert W. Kirby skillfully keeps you guessing with twists and turns.
NetGalley has once again given me the chance to discover a new book before it hits the shelves, and I'm grateful for that.

This was an interesting ride. I didn't care too much for the characters, but the overall plot was okay, if a little bit of a drag in parts.
Vanessa and her husband Curtis have recently moved with their two young children to the home of their dreams in the seaside town of Whitstable, when Vanessa's friend Delphine - who is a psychic - warns her that someone from her past is about to reenter her life, and that she should be very careful not to let them in again.
Soon afterwards, at a dinner at their home which Vanessa has organised in order to introduce Delphine to their friend Jonas, Curtis lets in a stranger who arrives on the doorstep claiming to know Vanessa - which turns out to be a mistake.
The new arrival, Hayden Knox, is not only the toxic ex-boyfriend of Vanessa, he is also privy to family secrets that she is desperate to keep from her husband and friends. But how will she manage to ensure that?
This story has a couple of good twists, including an unexpected element of pagan ritual and folklore. But overall, I did not find the writing style appealing, so it wasn't a big hit with me.
I really liked the sound of this but the writing style just wasn't to my taste. It was too wordy and the pace just felt too sluggish and I couldnt get into the actual story line. I'm sure for those who enjoy very details oriented stories then this may work better
I was intrigued by the blurb, but this ended up not being my kind of book. The writing style was grating and made for a snail's pace that frustrated me.
Just when you think you have it all figured out… you don’t.
Sucking you into the past of little essa and her dark secrets coming back to haunt her and her family, you just don’t know who to trust!
The Visit by Robert W Kirby does a great job of capturing your attention, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
This book will definitely take you on a crazy ride, so buckle up and get ready! Honestly, While this book is definitely a psychological thriller, it also had some strange fantasy lore mixed in. It took me a bit to really care about the characters, but once it got going it just didn't stop.
Vanessa seems to have it all, a beautiful home, an amazing husband, and two beautiful kids. But one night while entertaining dinner guests, Vanessa's Husband Curtis answers the front door and nothing is ever the same again.
Hayden enters their life, an ex that Vanessa hasn't seen since she was sixteen. Crude and disrespectful it becomes clear that Vanessa isn't happy to see him and there is no love lost between them. Vanessa begins to pull away leaving Curtis to wonder what she is hiding. Hayden drives a wedge between them and steers them all down a dark path that Vanessa believes will tear her world apart. This book will leave you struggling to know who to trust and what will happen next. Hang on it is a wild ride.
Thank you Netgalley for this book in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve not read many books from this author but from what I’ve read this was no different, another great read and it had everything, looking forward to more in the future
Unfortunately this book wasn’t the one for me. I found the authors writing style to be very wordy, with lots of unnecessary details and descriptions in the story. The plot was so slow moving in the beginning, along with the introduction of so many different characters I was instantly confused. I kept thinking the story would pick up and become more clear, but it didn’t.
Sadly this was a DNF for me.
This was an interesting read. There were times when I wasn’t sure what genre this novel belonged to. It has elements of a murder mystery and the supernatural. The first few chapters were also a little slow but the pace picked up halfway through. Some parts were a little awkward/cheesy like conversations which didn’t feel realistic. A few words weren’t used correctly, for example ‘faze’ instead of ‘phase’. But overall it was enjoyable and the author kept me guessing until the end.
Vanessa has secrets in her past. Her friend, Delphine is a psychic, and tells Vanessa that a person from her past will make a reappearance, but not to let him into her life.
They have a dinner party, with Delphine and Jonas, a South African friend, as guests. Curtis, Vanessa's husband, answers a knock at the door and lets the person in. Big mistake, the caller changes the lives of everyone at the dinner party.
I really enjoyed this book, I think the author has strong ties with South Africa, where I currently live, and the language is authentic.
This is a page turner, and extremely twisty. And Vanessa keeps her secrets to the end.
I look forward to reading more of this author's books. My only complaint is that there are a few words that are incorrectly used - 'faze' instead of phase and there are a couple more.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This started out really slowly. I thought there was alot of details that could have been removed. It didn't pick up until about half way to three quarters of the way in. Without giving anything away, alot happened that I did not predict. At times, it was truly sad. And at other times, it all felt a bit silly and over the top. Overall a good story.
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the arc.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my arc. The concept of this book is intriguing and although I found it a little slow in parts I still was driven to find out the full story and see how things played out. The characters were all unlikeable but with human flaws that made you consider what you would do in a similar situation. I enjoyed the authors writing style and would consider picking up something from him in the future if the plot caught my attention.
This was definitely a kind of weird one! But a good one! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, intrigue, murder, mystery, a little voodoo, A kind of who done it, and some really crazy twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
I haven’t read a good thriller like this in a long time. I really enjoyed it. Excellent writing style.
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
