Shelby does it again. Her words are so powerful and lyrical I just can breeze through her stories. I loved this. I definitely will buy it when it comes out.
10/10 will recommend.

3.5 stars rounded up. A great read for fans of the serpent and dove series as this book takes place in the same universe with many of the same great characters. The new storyline follows celie as our Mc and while she has an interesting journey it felt somewhat dragged out and then so much action in the last 2 chapters that could have been flushed out more to make the story more interesting. I did really like our new characters we are introduced to, and I think after the cliffhanger we are left with, the next book has a lot of promise.

Thank you so much to the publisher and to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

As a fan of the original series - Serpent & Dove - I very much enjoyed this spin-off, probably even more than the original series! The standout aspects were:

- the character growth of the FMC
- the tension and romance between the FMC and MMC
- the fully-realized side-characters (helped in no small part from their inclusion in the original trilogy)
- the expansive world-building
- the pacing

This is a 5-star read for me, but minor nitpicks are that parts of it were very, very predictable, and while the FMC made growth, she was still hard to like/respect at certain points due to her helplessness and naivetee. That said, overall, a very compelling read.

The Scarlet Veil brings us back into the world of Cesarine and Belterra, of witches and Chausseurs, of magic and intrigue. This time, we're following Célie, who you may remember from the Serpent and Dove trilogy. She's joined the ranks of Chausseurs and is doing what she can to find her place there; much to her fiancé Jean Luc's dismay. He's doing what he can to treat her like she's made of glass and to keep her from harm's way, but Célie, who, if you recall, killed Morgane Le Blanc isn't as fragile as Jean Luc and the Chausseurs seem to think. After a string of murders ravage the streets of Belterra, Célie learns two things: her friends are working to find the killer without her, and that all is not as it appears. While visiting a loved one in the cemetery, Célie stumbles upon a body and is quickly pulled into the very case her friends excluded her from solving. Abducted, Célie ends up on a mysterious island, Requiem, where she learns that vampires exist...and that they may have sinister plans for her.

I couldn't get enough of this story! Célie definitely steps into her own in ways that I didn't expect--the Célie we know from Serpent and Dove is a bit prissy. She's prim and proper and pretty haughty, which she still is, but she's so much more than that. Célie is surprisingly deep, and I'm so thankful that we've finally gotten her point of view! The vampires you meet along the way are also so complex, and you can't decide from moment to moment if you love them or hate them. In that same vein (ha! see what I did there?!), I should go ahead and warn you, from a romance perspective, this duology is going to be a slooooow burn. If it goes where I hope it goes, that is.

There are also so many parts, especially in the castle on Requiem, that gave me Haunted Mansion vibes--when you read it, if you're a Disney person, you'll know what I'm talking about. It was such a freaking mood!

On a more serious note, this story grappled with anxiety and panic attacks, post traumatic stress disorder, grief, and addiction beautifully. It confronts how so often people are treated as fragile when they're "going through it," but how that anxiety, grief, addiction, etc. isn't the person--it isn't everything that they are, and they don't need to be treated as if they might break just because they have suffered and are coming to terms with life during, and after, that suffering. It humanizes so many emotions that we are often numb to or judgmental of so beautifully.

Then there's the Epilogue. It's just...flawless. Sure, this book leaves you on a pretty massive cliffhanger, but...it's worth it. I already know that the sequel is going to be everything.

I seriously don't know how I'm going to survive until I get more time with Célie, Michal, and the gang.

If you've ever had your heart ripped out by Shelby Mahurin, you may be entitled to compensation...in the form of reading more and putting yourself through it all again willingly. Does that count as compensation?

As a fan of the original series, I absolutely loved this story! I appreciated the cameos from the original characters as well and I loved that it included Vampires instead of just witches. I loved seeing Celie's growth and overcoming her insecurities. I'm really hoping for a sequel!

Thanks to netgalley for this advanced copy!
While I love fantasy, this vampire/gothic is not my normal fare. After seeing the cover shared briefly on Instagram I decided to go for it. I have not read the original trilogy, so I had a lot of fun jumping into this story as an outsider. It's definitely not necessary to have read those in order to enjoy this book - but it made me want to!

It wasn't a 5 star for me, mostly because I found it difficult to enjoy Celie, our heroine - it was often difficult for me to understand why everyone was so charmed by her. She usually proved herself to be exactly what she feared others thought she was: insecure, incapable, immature, sometimes hysterical. Making poor judgments and poor decisions, throwing tantrums and never knowing what she wants. Always insisting that she is a modern, independent woman who can take care of herself - but she actually can NEVER take care of herself 😂 the story was saved by the side characters who I actually enjoyed quite a bit. I will keep an eye out for the sequel and will probably read the other trilogy, too.

I received an E-ARC from Netgalley. This is my honest opinion of the work.

Let me start off by saying, I was not a fan of how the original Serpent and Dove series went in book 2 and 3 and when I realized Célie was going to have her own book I really had no intention of reading it. This was a happy accident me requesting the book. I read vampire and Serpent and Dove and said why not. Célie character growth is very nice and doesn't come off whiny, weak, prim/proper girl I remember from the original trilogy. I will say there is a lot of references to the original trilogy in the story so I would highly recommend reading before reading this book. The story itself is interesting and introduces new character and creatures along with a new magical location. The story is action pack and very fast moving. I could kind of predict how the story would end but there were unexpected plot twists. Overall a great edition to the Serpent and Dove universe. It reads like a typical vampire romance. And if you are on the fence because of how Blood and Honey and Gods and Monsters turned out to be this book does not drag like those 2 books do and say give it a chance if you like vampire books with a dab of romance.

*4.5

I love Celie and anyone who speaks ill of her will have to get through me first. I loved seeing her journey of really learning who she is finding her confidence. I think that the book is a bit slow in the middle but it lends to character development so I don't mind at all. The mystery is intriguing #tome and I love that Celie can see ghosts. It makes everything so interesting.

Now let's talk about the romance. Michal and Celie are so good together. Yeah their relationship starts because he kidnaps her, so what? Seeing them open up to each other and learn to trust each other was so. All the little things that he did for her to show that he does in fact trust her, they warm my heart.

NOW THE ENDING?! This book doesn't even come out until september but I need the sequel right now.

Also I really loved how all of the previous characters from S&D were integrated into the story. I loved seeing Lou, Reid, Coco, and Beau.

I received an arc through netgalley.

Thank you netgalley for the ARC!

If you loved the setting and characters of Serpent & Dove, you definitely need to pick up this book. It’s a fun, twisty continuation of the story with Celie as the protagonist. I loved that all the favorites—Lou, Reid, Coco, Beau—were in the story too.

Overall, I enjoyed the chance for Celie to become a strong character and grow into her own. I liked the vampire lore and callback to the heyday of vampire YA. Malhurin’s writing is gorgeous as always and she definitely takes you on a ride.

I did, however, find that the first 60% of the book rather slow. The pacing felt uneven and the characters a bit shallow. To me, there was a lack of strong tension that S&D had in spades. I just had the overall vibe that something was missing as I read. The ending though was the best part for sure and I’m already ready for book 2 after that cliffhanger!

I’d recommend for S&D fans or lovers of YA vampire stories.

Those who enjoyed Serpent & Dove are likely to enjoy this one. That said, it feels more like a continuation than a stand alone, and so it isn't the right fit for our libraries. We always aim for books that stand alone.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the ARC.

Thank you so much to HarperCollins & NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I am a huge fan of the Serpent & Dove series - so obviously I was so excited to rejoin that world and join some of my favorites again in this spin-off series. Upon completion, I can tell you that I'm definitely already anticipating the next book in this series, as the ending boggled my mind a bit! I'm captivated and hooked into this world - Shelby Mahurin: keep 'em coming!!

I'll admit that the Serpent & Dove series wasn't super fresh in my mind at the time of reading this so I had a little bit of an adjustment period and moments where I did feel a bit lost, but this book can definitely stand on its own. The moral grayness of the characters is always intriguing - I found myself having a hard time figuring out who I should be trusting and predicting what might happen next.

I love the descriptive language and the details that build such clarity to their world and environment.

Of course, my favorite parts were being reunited with Lou from Serpent & Dove. I was also a big fan of the vampire focus in this book and learning more about that world. The romance didn't completely sell me in this one, but we'll see what happens as the series goes on.

I definitely recommend this book to vampire lovers, lovers of fantasy/supernatural in general, and ESPECIALLY those who already love the Serpent & Dove series... and even if you didn't love that series -- you might like this one even better.

A really promising start to this spinoff series! At first I didn’t really follow the references from Serpent & Dove and I had forgotten what happened to Celie, but it was easy enough to pick back up on. While I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with Celie throughout the book, I enjoyed following her journey. She goes from being the first female Chasseur to living on an island full of vampires and it was just a really fun and unexpected story.

Obviously my favorite part was the vampires and I loved Michal the vampire king. Honestly at times I found myself wondering why he would like Celie so much, but I did enjoy their hate to (almost) love relationship. The big reveal was a surprise to me but I thought it was kind of a boring choice. The ending was action packed though with a good cliffhanger so I will be looking forward to the next book.

Thank you to HarperCollins for the ARC!

Absolutely loved this book! Maybe more than serpent and dove? It gave me goth once upon a broken heart vibes, and the talking cat had my heart. Also liked the LI in this one much more than Reid. Didn’t know what to expect but it definitely was a fun time

The Scarlet Veil—Shelby Mahurin

Célie Tremblay is dying to prove herself as a huntswoman of the Chasseur brotherhood. Tired of being seen as a broken little girl by her fiancé and friends, Célie decides to investigate the strange string of deaths occurring in Beltarre. Doing so puts her directly in the path of a likely suspect—Michal Vasiliev, King of the Éternals, aka the very beings Célie was always warned of. Though she attempts to get away, Célie is ultimately abducted by Michal and brought to Requiem, a hidden island of all Éternal beings. It’s there she learns there may be more to a reason for her abduction than just being connected to the Chasseur brethren. That perhaps she is to be bait to lure her friends and the Chassuers to Requiem and be slain by Michal’s hand…

This book was pretty incredible but I had a tough time reading it. Probably my own fault for not realizing it was connected to a series but beyond that, I just found it inundated with so many details and characters. I was also expecting more of a dark romance angle and was a bit disappointed. However, the slowburn between Michal & Célie was SIZZLING - I really wanted to see more of that get developed. I think my biggest issue though is not having more familiarity with the series so I can’t complain too much. The world-building was excellent and I really loved Célie’s stubbornness and humor. I just wish this didn’t end on a cliffhanger and maybe if it was broken up by another book because it just seemed like so much to cram into one story.

🖤loved:
- Célie’s unyielding sweetness
- Danse Macabre
- the serial killer investigation
- mystery of Célie’s past
- Célie watching Michal feeding 🥵
- coffin snuggling!!!!
- sooo much bloody violence
- Célie’s past coming full circle

thank you so much to @netgalley & @shelbymahurin for the opportunity to read this!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley for approval to read this advanced copy.

First, let me preface this review by also talking about Serpent and Dove, which is a completed series I loved and read earlier this year by Shelby Mahurin. The series introduced so many different themes I didn’t even know I would like including the war between the church and witches. The characters were wonderful and the entire world she built really came to life in my head. Finishing that series left me crying and sad until I logged onto her Instagram and found out she was writing another series- a duology!

Fast forward to today and I’m almost regretting the move to read the ARC as now I have to wait probably a year until the next book is released to see what happens! I loved that some time had passed with the original series and we shifted to another character to focus on while still getting a few glimpses of everyone else. While the beginning was a little slower than I anticipated, at the end I realized why and came to understand the reasoning behind that and found a new love for the main character. Overall a truly wonderful book that I will be thinking about until we see what happens in the next one.

(book 1 in The Scarlet Veil duology, a sequel series to the Serpent & Dove trilogy)

Um okay okay, it's been a whole 1.5 days since I finished I this book, and I still can't breathe 😭this book might rival Blood & Honey for how unhinged the last chapter and the epilogue are 😭

But okay, talking about the actual book itself - each plotline, each chapter, and each character interaction was just so good?? TSV now ties for my fav YA fantasy release this year along with Divine Rivals. I enjoyed this book so frickin much, I wanna go back and read it all over again and scream.

The introduction of vampires into this fantasy world was done in a perfect + shocking manner, and the vampires themselves were so frickin intriguing. The author is a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries (as am I), and that is shown so clearly in this book. The main relationship is very Klaroline, and I love it.

The MC Célie has amazing narration (it's so hard to pick whether I like her narration or Lou's narration more!), and I loved her so much. Her journey in this book was exquisite, and I cannot wait to see where she goes in the next book.

(Speaking of, I suspect [redacted] will have a pov in book 2?)

TWs - the usual blood/gore/violence/ptsd in a paranormal fantasy book

-- ty smm to the author, the publisher and netgalley for an advanced copy!

likes
-kept me engaged.
-a fun take on the traditional vampire story built on the backbones of the acclaimed serpent and dove series
-smoky eerie atmosphere. perfect halloween tale. absolutely loved the settings.

mixed/neutral
-must have read at least a little bit of the serpent and dove series to not feel left out of a big chunk of story and to get the most out of scarlet veil. disclaimer: i only read the first two serpent and dove books not the last one.
-not particularly interested in getting the second book to this. i would not pay money for it but if i saw it for free at the library or something i could be enticed to read it.

dislikes
-predictable romance.
-not a fan of the main character. she was particularly grating and irritating at times. not a fan of many of the characters. the development of them and the main character felt so forced and all over the place.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you, HarperCollins and Netgalley, for this arc for an honest review.

I did not look at this synopsis before reading, so I didn't know this was set in the Serpent and Dove World. I've read the first 2 S&D books, and this is definitely my favorite from the author. This book follows the pov of Celie as she is the first female Chasseur. She is engaged to Jean Luc but is frustrated because he tries to protect her by hiding what's going on with the murders and keeping her from training.

So part of the plot is a murder mystery that a lot of people in this world are trying to figure out. Celie is kidnapped by a vampire Micheal who takes her to an island so that they can figure out the mystery. The vampires are dark and mysterious, which I loved. I think the book became so much more interesting for me when the vampires came into play. I adored Celie, watching her character develop in wanting to prove herself to others and find her voice, especially when it came to Jean Luc, was something I appreciated in the book. I also really liked the glimpses we got of Reid and Lou and the characters we met in the S&D books.

Overall despite the slow start to the book, it gets really interesting. There is some romance, and it's an enemies-to-lover slow burn, which I liked it but needed more. It does end on a cliffhanger, so be prepared. If you like YA fantasy/paranormal books with vampires, ghosts, witches, etc., you'll like this.
