Rachel Scott McDaniel has instantly become a favorite of historical fiction. She makes me feel a part of the story. This one is set during WWII and mainly in Sweden. I love the new perspective we get off the war. The storyline of an actress acting as a spy was very fun and kept it a good pace. I loved the chemistry between Amelie and Finn. I’m excited for this new series!

A great mystery / suspense historical romance by Rachel Scott McDaniel told in first person, single point of view from our dear heroine. It is a clean read with light mentions of faith-based content.
Set against the backdrop of WWII in Sweden, the author weaves a story of love and espionage and mystery seamlessly. Who can you trust? Who can you love? These are questions woven from page one to the very end.
I loved the characters and the settings. I was carried along in the moments and didn't want to book to end, yet I wanted answers to the above questions.
Make sure to read the author's note at the end! And if you listen to the audiobook, try to at least borrow the ebook from a library to read it!
I know this would be an amazing book and I'm upset at myself for putting off reading it for so long. I am so thankful to Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for selecting me to receive an advanced copy. I waited until close to publication date to read and review it honestly. I only wish I'd read it sooner!

Amazing. This story catches you up in a whirlwind of intrigue, suspense, fear, and romance. I found it to be one of the best and most interesting historical books I’ve read. A clean historical romance that i immensely enjoyed.

Thanks Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for access to this arc.
Okay, yes the cover caught my eye but the plot was what made me want to read this book. Ooh, intrigue in Sweden, atomic secrets, and a heroine who needs to disguise her smarts while also using them.
While I love that Amelie is not the dumb blonde she tries to appear to be, I hate that she has to hide her intelligence behind a façade of silliness. Amelie also realizes that she’s not quite as good an actress as she thinks when this cover slips a few times. She also has a special “talent” of being able to remember anything written that she focuses on though this is underused in the story.
The romance is slow burn partly due to what I mentioned above and partly because Finn is suspicious of why Amelie is there. Another character basically calls Amelie out very early about why she left her “oh, so sick” mother back in Stockholm despite that being her reason to fly from LA to Sweden. No one else mentions it again but it is a niggling plot hole for me.
The middle section of the book is mainly setting up characters, suspicions, and counter suspicions. Amelie observes people, asks some questions of others, uses her newly acquired lockpicking skills, and tries to keep Finn from discovering that she’s investigating him. Things move a bit slowly as far as cloak and daggering goes. There is a lot about Sweden though, which I enjoyed reading about. Amelie’s faith is important to her but this is mainly shown by her mentally giving thanks and credit to God for the important things in her life.
Then things start to pick up. In one lovely scene, Amalie finally confesses to Finn about the long ago meeting they had when he crushed her teen dreams and that it made her a stronger person who began to view her own self worth as coming from inside rather than as a validation from a man. Finn apologizes for his past self. Then later on Finn confesses that Amelie as she is then – with no make-up and wearing a bathrobe – is lovelier to him than any glammed up version. Yeah, I could tell he was falling hard for her. The action finally kicks back into gear and it’s here that Amelie’s intelligence is finally allowed to shine while she and Finn chase down clues and leads. Yay that it’s Amelie who puts the clues together. Boo that the villain goes into gleeful exposition mode.
Overall, I really liked the unusual WWII setting and that Amelie is smart and figures things out. The Author’s Note information was fun to read, too. Now I must youtube to see what the hambo dance looks like.

Fabulous World War II Romance!
Author Rachel Scott McDaniel has hit this one out of the ballpark with its fast-moving plot, intrigue, suspense and slow-simmering romance. I appreciate learning new things even from fiction books and love the attention to historical detail found in this book. Hollywood actress Amelie Blake uses her “dumb blond” persona as a spy for the Allied cause while trying to ferret out who is friend or foe in her search for missing documents. Her cover puts her in close proximity with the broody and enigmatic Finn Ristaffason, rumored to have Nazi leanings. The chapters just flew by as I absorbed nonstop action, suspenseful moments and great dialogue, some of which made me laugh out loud with its wittiness. The unlikely yet swoony romance between the main characters was so beautifully crafted and believable. I also appreciated the faith thread woven throughout the book. I have been enjoying this series from Barbour and have learned so much from it. This book will rank high on my series favorites list and I can't recommend it enough!
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher and NetGalley via Celebrate Lit. A positive review was not required and these are my honest opinions.

Historical fiction will enjoy this addition to the Heroines of WWII series. Mainly set in Sweden, actress Amelie sets out on her first OSS mission. This story is based on true historical events as the author reveals in the after note. Twists and turns throughout will keep the reader's interest. The subject matter was intriguing but I thought there were too many characters to keep straight.

Rachel Scott McDaniel’s The Starlet Spy is a wonderful new addition to Barbour Publishing’s awesome Heroines of WWII series. This somewhat untypical WWII heroine story is set in Sweden (which I loved)! The plot is intriguing with lots of action. Amelie and Finn have great connection and enjoyable, witty conversation. The fast-paced mystery with good plot twists and a little sweet romance made the book hard to put down.
Thank you to NetGalley and Barbour for the opportunity to read for my honest review.

Amelie is a Hollywood star that gets recruited to be a spy.
Her new job takes her to Sweden and puts her in close proximity to a prior acquaintance- Finn.
It’s a good story, I liked Amelie and even Finn. It has some surprises along the way too. Definitely add to your list.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy

In Oct. 1943, a popular actress by the name of Amelie Blake returns to Sweden on assignment as a spy for the Allies. Her abilities of a photographic memory gives her an edge even though she has long been considered a "dumb blonde" Hollywood sweetheart. Using the "ailing mother" scenario as a cover story, Amelie is able to get into the country to begin her first assignment & recover a missing briefcase. This book by Rachel Scott McDaniel takes you on a journey of intrigue, danger, double agents & at the same time you get a real sense of the scenery, historical aspects and a little romance, which makes this a real page turner! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing & was under no obligation to post a review.

This is another wonderful book by Rachel Scott McDaniel! Set during World War II, this historical novel about spies and Sweden is thrillingly written! I loved how it has many historical details that add to the richness of the story.
I had a hard time putting this book down, and I was surprised by the twists and turns at the end! I used to read a lot of mysteries, and I usually try to guess who I think is behind everything. In this case I was completely wrong, which was really fun because I enjoyed the surprise of it all!
I don’t want to use too many details in my review because I don’t want to give away anything, but this is a story that I recommend reading! Rachel Scott McDaniel is a very talented writer, and I am looking forward to reading more books by her in the future!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only)
Trigger Warning: murder, deadly fire
Amelie Blake is a famous actress who is about to take on her most challenging role yet: a spy for the United States Office of Strategic Services. She'll be returning to her homeland of Sweden and tasked with getting close to Finn Ristaffason who is supposedly in possession of a briefcase containing atomic research that could turn the tide of the war in Europe. While Finn initially proves difficult to win over, Amelie soon learns there's more to this man than his broody exterior. As the hunt for the briefcase becomes a chase through Sweden, lives will be put at risk and secrets will be exposed. Can Amelie complete her mission and protect herself from heartbreak?
This was an enjoyable mix of historical fiction, suspense, and a dash of romance. Amelie was a lovable heroine who was encouraged to play the part of the dumb blonde but who was really an intelligent and brave woman. I loved how Finn saw right through her facade! This book taught me a lot about Sweden and how World War II impacted its citizens. I really enjoyed having it as the setting of this story. The mystery of the briefcase kept me on the toes, and I honestly couldn't predict how everything would play out and who would be the villain. The ending really had me invested as the action ramped up and everything came to light. While the romance doesn't really kick in much until the second half, I adored the dynamic between Amelie and Finn. He was very stoic on the outside but was protective and caring on the inside. There were several sweet moments between Finn and Amelie that had me smiling and satisfied. I'm glad I gave this book a try and would definitely be interested in reading more from Rachel Scott McDaniel!
Thank you Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

" I cared about the millions of brave souls who’d sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom. I cared about seeing good triumph over evil."
Like the song, I'm speechless.
This book was so, SO good!!
Rachel, we need a sequel, or maybe a whole series!!
This book has all the perfect elements needed for a great book: a great leading lady and male lead, a good setting, international intrigue, spies, realistic villains, suspense, danger and a clean romance! Not to mention, one of my top favorite authors penned this beauty of a book. 😏
I appreciated how she created a strong female lead without the character being a brat or the typical feminist a lot of books feature. Amelie Blake was no less feminine in what she did as a spy, and she didn't try to one-up the male agents she worked with or carry a chip on her shoulder. She was a confident and humble character despite her cinematic fame.
Even in awkward situations, Amelie was a true lady above reproach, and embodied modesty and dignity. She tackled each new obstacle with grit and grace.
I was glad to see the author's notes in the back about the history and real life characters that she wove into this book.
And the cover- absolutely gorgeous!
Couldn't ask for better.
If you liked Sarah Sundin's last book, "The Sound of Light" you'll love this book!
This is one of my favorite quotes from The Starlet Spy: "Over the past decade, I'd had many roles, but God had called me to go off script. To be the leading lady in the story he'd written for me. I intended to follow the cues from the Director of my heart. For he'd led me... to this moment."
Thank you to the author, publisher, Netgalley and Celebrate Lit for the complimentary e-book I received to review. I was not required to write a positive review (but it was a delight to!) and the thoughts above are my own.

The Starlet Spy by Rachel Scott McDaniel is a romantic suspense novel set in 1943 during the height of WW2.
Hollywood actress Amelie Blake is approached by the OSS to uncover and find sensitive information before it falls into enemy hands. Why, she asks, pick her? Because she has always played parts of the dittzy blonde, and it makes a good cover. Plus she is originally from Sweden and they suspect the information is being transferred from Sweden to Germany.
This story was interesting and intriguing. When Amelie meets Finn Ristaffason, she is sure he is in collaboration with the enemy. But Finn sees right through her disguise. And as the relationship grows between the two of them, they learn to trust each other. And of course there is a surprise ending.
This is the first book I've read by McDaniel, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good clean fiction. Looking forward to reading more of her writings.
I received a complimentary an e-copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is the first book that I have read by the author, but I definitely will explore her other books. This story pulled me in and was hard to put down. A Hollywood star, Amelie Blake, returns to her home country of Sweden during WWII to spy for the OSS and the Allied cause. She was to trust no one but was given a code name and code names of those she could trust. One man, in particular, she was to watch but the main goal was to find a briefcase holding critical documents concerning atomic energy that had been lost, taken, or misplaced. If you want to read a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat with suspense, mystery, danger, intrigue, stressful situations, romance, all sprinkled with faith, during wartime, this is the book to read. The characters are likable and realistic and the settings are well described. The book has tons of historical facts interspersed in the story. I highly recommend this one.

This is a delightful novel stuffed with historical facts about a young Hollywood starlet Amelie Blake, who is invited to become a spy, in her native Sweden. She is cautioned "Trust no one."

This book takes the reader into the intelligence work of WWII. The author seamlessly weaves this story with historical facts, people, and events to create a believable and even plausible storyline from the intelligence work during WWII. With so much actual history in the story, the reader is drawn into the plot so much more. I enjoyed the fictional part of the plot even more due to the history. I appreciated the elements of suspense in this story as well. I highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction or suspense. Although it is strongly historical, the level of suspense in the book was perfect for keeping the reader engaged and eager to read the next chapter.
I requested and received a copy of this book for review. The words and thoughts expressed here are wholly my own.

Personally, this book wasn't for me. I love stories set in WWII--it's such a fascinating yet tragic period--but the one was kind of slow, in my opinion. There's not much action until the end, and truthfully, I didn't fall in love with the characters, so I wasn't very invested in their story. I'm sad this story wasn't for me, but I know other readers will enjoy it so don't be afraid to give it a try. 2.5/5 stars

✨ARC Review✨
“That time all those years ago was so painful and scary. I questioned if I’d ever survive the weight of it. But I look at you and remember God breathes light into our darkest moments. That’s what you are to me. My brightest light. My greatest joy.”
Once again, Rachel has written a captivating historical fiction filled with faith, intrigue, and romance. Her attention to detail is impeccable, making for fascinating stories with exceptional characters.
The WWII era was such a dangerous uncertain time with new catastrophic weapons and maniacal enemies lurking among the shadows. The need for undercover agents and counterintelligence was at an all time high. The risks were great and ordinary people rose to the challenge to make the world a safer place. Amelie Blake was no exception. Her character was so admirable; humble beginnings, an intense desire to serve her country, and a kindhearted, discerning spirit that guided her way through doubts and fears. Her special skills, dogged determination, and unwavering trust in God making her irreplaceable agent.
And let’s not leave out Finn! Brooding and seemingly unaffected by the Hollywood starlet, Finn was an enigma. It was wonderful watching his appreciation and respect grow for Amelie. The moments they spent together trying to solve the mystery, all while unraveling their preconceived notions of one other, were refreshing and very romantic.
I have always loved a good spy story, add in some old Hollywood glamour, a blonde bombshell, and a handsome, brooding Swede, what a spectacular trifecta!
