I received this book for free for an honest unbiased review from Netgalley.
I wish more books were this well written. Characters were witty and the setting fantastic.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher's for the copy. The opinion is my own.
A tale from Victorian ages to the modern day through the eyes of a very british and opinionated victorian cat. These are all snapshots in time granted by Cat-Sìth to our protagonist spectral cat Grimalkin, where the only rules are that he has 3 lives he stays (one of which has ended when our story begins - there is a reason this is called ghost cat after all), 3 where he strays and 3 where he plays. We meet a variety of people, read how odd new technologies and language terms would be for a victorian cat and how much he truly loves his owner. I loved the descriptions given by Grimalkin and just how prim and proper he sounded with the new slang just suddenly peppered in.
Short and a bit bittersweet truly, it's very much worth reading!
The Ghost Cat is a story about a cat named Gramalkin who is sent through time and his nine lives take him on a historical trip that's tied to an Edinburgh tenement and the things that happen there.
This is a must for cat lovers.
Grimalkin the cat is our guide through over 100 years of a residence in Edinburgh and it's changing residents and decoration. We also get to witness the discoveries and achievements of those living at the time, such as the discovery of penicillin and the Coronation and demise of Elizabeth II.
Despite his passing Grimalkin gets granted nine lives as the proverb goes "For Three He Plays, For Three He Strays, For Three He Stays". Only they are as a ghost cat which at times I felt so sorry for him as he could see everyone but they couldn't see him.
I found out about this book through the author's tik tok account. I was intrigued by the idea of retelling history from a different point of view, and through a time travelling cat. I wasn't disappointed as history was brought to life and also seen from the viewpoint of a cat who didn't really appreciate the changes of societal values through the decades.
My favourite moment was when Grimalkin learnt to use a laptop! Albeit in a haphazard but effective way.
I'm a cat lover and fell in love with Grimalkin since the first pages. This is the story of a cat and a way to tell how morals, technology and way of living changed during more than 1 hundred years.
Grimalkin lives his 9 lives and see how things are changes. There's also loss and love.
It's well written and life affirming book, Edimburgh and history are relevant characters as our cat and human he met.
The world bulding and character development are excellent and I loved the storytelling
I loved it and it's strongly recommended.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
In The Ghost Cat by Alex Howard we follow Grimalkin, a cat living in a tenement in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has lived there since he was found as a kitten by the maid, in the late 1800s. He is truly a Victorian cat. Due to a supernatural mistake he does not die when he is old but instead is allowed to live his nine lives as a ghost cat in the same apartment.
Grimalkin is such a delightful character and his observations while seeing time go by are the highlight of the book. From Victorian to modern times, he experiences the changing society, along with major events that affect life in Edinburgh.
This is such a unique book, a love letter to cats, Edinburgh, history, life. It was pure catnip for me even though I’m not a cat person! I don’t think I’ll ever look at cats the same way again, actually.
(If there is one thing I would change it would be to add even more footnotes, because I love learning about history.)
Thank you NetGalley and Black & White Publishing for letting me read this in exchange for an honest review.
This was better than I expected when I opened it up. I absolutely fell for this story. It was so engrossed and enjoyable.

I thought the cover was beautiful, and this looked and sounded like a book that I might enjoy.
This was all about Grimalkin the cat, and as a cat lover, it was a delight to read. It felt like I was reading a book of short stories rather than a novel, but I found the format pleasing. What I found so clever about this was that the hauntings took place over an extended period of time, starting in the early 1900s through to the 2020s. Each haunting felt like a different little adventure.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
A beautiful love letter to the majestic cat. It took me a moment to get used to the writing still, but once I was able become Grimalkin and tried to see things through his cloudy eyes I was golden
The imagination used for this story is one I haven't read in a while. I thought it was delightful, but not before bed reading. I did have to google some words
