I've been a fan of Rosie Danan since THE ROOMMATE, and she never disappoints! I love that she's started to branch out into other subgenres of romance, namely paranormal. DO YOUR WORST is a great romcom for spooky season and perfect for fans of THE EX HEX.
This was a fun little romance! The writing style wasn't my favorite and I wouldn't really consider the two MCs enemies but it's something I would recommend for most romance fans!
Rosie Danan's debut is one of my all time favorite books, so I was HYPED to read an early copy of her newest. The plot sounded like so much fun, in a castle with a touch of magic. Unfortunately I was let down by the book. It's not bad, I rated it three stars, but it definitely did not live up to what I was expecting from the book. The romance progressed too fast to be believable, especially with how mean both characters were to each other. Both said some pretty hurtful things, but were brushed over and forgiven very quickly. Overall the setting was fun and the synopsis was fun, but not my favorite book and not one I think I'll turn to, to reread. I am looking forward to whatever Rosie Danan publishes next!
This book is a cute and very fast read. I will recommend that my library purchase this. I think that people who love all of those popular rom-com novels would really like this one for Halloween. It's not really scary, but at least it has curses!
I love Rosie Danan's books so much! They're fun, swoony, super horny, and always rooted in deeply satisfying feels. Do Your Worst was no exception. First of all, this cover is phenomenal. Second, the banter!! Riley and Clark are such fantastically angsty enemies who really suck at not hooking up and oops might actually be lovers, and I love them so much. Their romance set against the backdrop of a cursed Scottish castle is just pure fun. I loved every second of this book, and I'm so grateful to Rosie Danan and Berkley for this ARC.
Rosie Danan is one of my favorite romance authors, ever since I first read The Roommate a few years ago. I was so happy to hear that she was releasing a new book this year, which was basically a love letter to The Mummy. Riley and Clarke were so much fun to follow and there were so many hilarious moments in this novel in true Rosie Danan fashion that made me burst out in laughter. Riley and Clarke's chemistry was also on fire!! I never thought a cursed ancient Scottish castle would be the perfect grounds for a sizzling romance, but I was wrong. The added subplot of the curse of Arden Castle and the numerous expeditions Riley and Clarke go on to break the curse were also super interesting to follow. I can't wait to read what Rosie Danan writes next!
I had such a great time reading this book. It was completely different plot-wise from The Roommate or The Intimacy Experiment, but it still had really interesting characters, great dialogue, and a sort of angsty enemies to lovers romance, all set against the backdrop of an allegedly cursed Scottish castle. Riley Rhodes is an American with a very unusual hereditary skill - she can break curses. She's been contracted for her biggest curse breaking yet, in an ancient castle in Scotland. Her first night in town, she meets a hot guy and makes out with him, so she's feeling pretty good about things until she goes to the castle the next morning and hears that same hot guy trying to get her fired for being a fraud. He's Clark Edgeware, an archaeologist who has recently been disgraced by his research partner, and he needs this job looking for artifacts in the same cursed castle to get back on track professionally. He doesn't really believe in the curse and thinks Riley is a complete fraud, but hilariously weird stuff keeps happening that starts to make him wonder. I loved how much of a role research played in this, and how into it both Riley and Clark are. I also really liked he curse element and how they worked together to try to break it, and I'm really hoping for a sequel after reading the epilogue.
Personally, I thought that this book was fun but didn't have much to offer plot wise. I was hoping for a little bit more, but that might just be on me.
Rosie Danon delivered the spice! Grumpy and disgraced archeologist Clark, meets his match with sunshine and making-a-name-for-herself curse breaker Riley. Clark is hired to check Arden Castle for historical and cultural artifacts. He’s a man of science and fact. Riley is hired to break the curse on the castle and she’s throwing a wrench in Clark’s plans. She’s loud, she’s beautiful, she’s a fraud probably, she’s beautiful, she’s distracting, she’s beautiful. There’s a thin line between love and hate. All their fighting and tension has to go somewhere…
<b> Thank you to Rosie Danan, Berkley Publishing Group, and Netgalley for the ARC to this book. </b>
Riley is on a mission to use her family's knowledge and gifts of the occult to make a living for herself. Fully expecting to be a lone wolf at breaking curses, she is out of her depth, professionally and personally when confronted with Clark - a disgraced archeologist who is more than just skeptical of her abilities and intentions surrounding the Scottish castle he's examining. But when Riley starts making the discoveries Clark longs for and only he can provide her with the research she lacks this enemies-with-benefits duo teams up to solve a 300-hundred-year mystery in the steamiest way possible.
I powered through this book, enjoying every minute of it. Rosie Danan does a great job of combining witty banter, sexual and emotional tension, and a little mystery to drive forward this enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, opposites attract romance. I particularly enjoyed that as the reader she gave enough clues on the curse-breaking mystery that I felt ahead of the MCs but yet still ended up missing an important part of the solution until they discovered it themselves.
I'm hoping there will be a follow-up book about <spoiler>Patrick and Ceilidh in the future! (Maybe even a follow-up with Alfie and his wife.) </spoiler>
Stars: 4/5 Steam: 3/5
An enemies-with-benefits romance? Yes please! This book was so much fun and I found myself reading it in one sitting! I loved it so much!
The Roommate and The Intimacy Experiment were high scores in likability for me, so I couldn't wait for this trope.
"Do Your Worst" is no exception and if anything it only proves that's there's no genre of romance Danan can't write in. I am the last person who would willingly read fantasy romance. Leave it to Danan to take an often corny as all hell trope and turn it into a modern day fable about personal growth and belief in things even when there isn't a logical explanation for them.
I really enjoyed the way Riley and Clark were foils to one another--both working to overcome stigma to make something of themselves outside of their respective family legacies. I also thought it was clever of Danan to show us just how compatible they were at their core the first time they meet.
Highly recommend this if you've enjoyed Danan's previous works, or are just looking for a spooky steamy good time.
Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to love this one I just couldn't push myself to keep reading it. I got around to the 43% mark and put the book down because I thought it was one of those "wrong time" situations and was hoping I could just find the interest to read it later on. After a month of waiting, I just couldn't find any interest to keep reading and decided to just move on from it. It wasn't necessarily the story or the writing style, I think I just had too high expectations and it didn't meet them. I desperately wanted to love this one but it just didn't work out.
Such a delightful read! The story built and built to a breaking point that was so good, it almost overshadowed the ending. There is nothing I love more than a good enemies-to-lovers, and this book uses the trope in so many different ways, it was incredibly fun to read and peel back another layer of plot and trope.
The supernatural elements are a departure from Rosie Danan's other (more grounded in reality) romances, but all her strengths as a writer are represented here: the characters are flawed but likable, and the misunderstandings and heat between them propels the story along. The Hallmark plot is probably the weakest aspect of this book, but there's something charming about the outsider solving a mystery in a small town too. Overall solid and marketable, but not Rosie Danan's best.
I read both The Roommate and The Intimacy Experiment by Rosie Danan, and I fell in love with her writing. Do Your Worst is her latest romance, and it is SO DIFFERENT from her other two, but OMG, I'm in LOVE.
Riley Rhodes is a curse-breaker. Her grandmother taught her all she knows, and now she's determined to make curse-breaking a profitable business, which is how she finds herself in Scotland at Arden Castle, a castle with a centuries old curse, dating back to the late eighteenth century. But she also finds Clark Edgeware, an archaeologist and supernatural skeptic who is convinced she's a charlatan. He's at the castle to redeem himself and his reputation after a scandal left his professional reputation in tatters. They share one perfect evening at the pub before they realize who the other is, and after that, Clark and Riley butt heads at every turn, determined to prove their own theories true. But like all good rivalries, this one comes with delicious tension, and they also get a helping hand from the curse itself. Almost like their love might be the thing that breaks it.
This book was ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. I feel like I say this all the time, but I literally couldn't put it down. I was out camping with my family, but I wasn't actually on the Oregon coast. Mentally, I was in Scotland, researching a curse and falling in love with a skeptical archaeologist and a spunky curse-breaker.
This book is delightful, a little campy, a lot swoony, and an absolute must-read.
There were a ton of fun, quirky moments in this paranormal rom-com. The MC's personal struggles were well portrayed. I struggled a bit with the love connection, but my biggest hangup was not getting more from the flashbacks. What happened with those two?? Did I miss that part?
<i> Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing this advance reader's copy for an honest review. </i>
this was such a fun romcom with a slight paranormal twist to it! rosie danan crafts characters with such fun & unique jobs and you can tell how much research she does into making it believable. those jobs evidently play a huge rule into how our two main characters, riley and clark, are forced together in the hopes of breaking a curse.
this starts off as an "rivals" situation that quickly turns into something more after not being able to deny their attraction to one another. rosie danan writes the best tension and build up between two characters as we've seen in her previous two books, but for riley and clark in particular, i found myself wishing for a bit more of that. nonetheless, all the moments that they do spend together in attempts to break the curse, i found just hilarious and wholesome.
overall, just a really fun and spicy read! needed something fluffy and this delivered.
Riley Rhodes has an unusual occupation to say the least- she's a professional curse breaker. As you can imagine, people have definite opinions about dabbling in the supernatural -either they're believers, or definitely NOT believers. When Riley gets the chance to go to Scotland to break a curse that's holding up the redevelopment of an ancient castle, she jumps on the first flight out. Her first night there she meets a handsome stranger and sparks fly for both of them. In the clear light of day, however, things take a decided turn for the worse when her crush tries to get her fired!
A fun enemies-to-lovers romance with a different twist on the supernatural, "Do Your Worst" was a book I thoroughly enjoyed. Very graphic, steamy love scenes make this one for adults only.
Rosie Danan has a gift, and it is a gift for writing believable characters, examining family trauma, and creating some of the most deliciously filthy sex scenes. Riley and Clark are a true enemies-to-lovers pairing, and I have never read such phenomenal hate fucking scenes in my life. However, by working together, they overcome their extreme reactions to each other, and fall in love. Because really, hate and love are two edges of the same knife.
