"Do Your Worst" by Rosie Danan is a steamy and entertaining enemies-to-lovers romance that combines elements of the supernatural with a captivating love story. With its engaging characters, witty banter, and sizzling chemistry, this novel offers a delightful reading experience.
The story follows Riley Rhodes, a skilled occult expert, and Clark Edgeware, a disgraced archaeologist. When Riley is hired to break a curse on a Scottish castle, she encounters Clark, who is determined to protect his chance for redemption and discredit her expertise. The clash between these two strong-willed characters creates an electric dynamic that drives the plot forward.
Riley is a spirited and determined protagonist with a strong sense of independence. Her dedication to her work and her family's supernatural legacy is admirable, and her quick wit adds humor and charm to the story. Clark, on the other hand, is grappling with his own past mistakes and is initially reluctant to let his guard down. The evolution of their relationship from rivals to something more is engaging and well-developed.
Rosie Danan skillfully weaves together the paranormal and romantic elements of the story. The tension between Riley's belief in the supernatural and Clark's skepticism provides both conflict and comedic moments. As the two characters are repeatedly thrown together, their verbal sparring escalates into steamy encounters that showcase their undeniable chemistry.
The pacing of the story is well-balanced, with a mix of lighthearted moments, emotional depth, and sensual scenes. The setting of the Scottish castle adds a touch of mystery and atmosphere, enhancing the overall reading experience.
"Do Your Worst" is not only a tale of romance but also a journey of self-discovery and acceptance for both Riley and Clark. The characters' growth and development, both individually and as a couple, add depth and resonance to the story.
In summary, "Do Your Worst" is a delightful and engaging romance novel that offers a blend of witty dialogue, strong character dynamics, and passionate romance. Fans of enemies-to-lovers stories with a touch of the supernatural will find this book to be a satisfying and enjoyable read.

So much fun, so much spice. I'd read Rosie Danan's store list at this point. Absolutely buying my own copy, because this is one I'm going to want to revisit.
THIS WAS AMAZING. It was quirky, mythological, romcom with spice! This enemies to lovers is top tier and I will be reading this over and over again!
I loved this book! So much fun to see Danan delve into a new genre for her, since I've only read contemporaries by her so far. I love both protagonists, they both are the "my thorny pain ahh" type and I love that. Neither of them wants to be vulnerable, but they do find a lot of common ground and are trying to prove themselves. I hope there's a second book with his brother?
After reading and loving Rosie Danan's first two novels, The Roommate and The Intimacy Experiment, I was eager to get my hands on her upcoming release, ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐ (Pub 11.14) It did not disappoint.
๐ช๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ช:
-She's a tough curse breaker
- He's an uptight archaeologist in the street and a beast in the sheets.
-rivals to lovers
- Banter that had me laughing out loud
- Sexy AF
- light paranormal romance
- Scottish Highlands
- opposites attract
- chemistry for days
- Pranks, brooding and tenderness
Riley and Clark's story is both fun and believable with delightful layers to uncover. The castle's curse not only fuels the mystery but also their romantic feelings. I couldn't get enough of their fighting and flirting.
Thank you to Netgalley and Berkley for the early copy.
Feisty cursebreaker x stuffy archeologist in a steamy romance sounded like my personal blend of catnip, but I couldnโt get past the heroโs truly obnoxious behavior at the beginning of the book. I donโt like reading about men refusing to believe women and dismissing their concerns out of handโI get enough of that in real life, thanks! That being said, the sex magic ritual scene was *scorchingly* hot. Iโll give the authorโs other books a try.
Thanks to Berkeley and Netgalley for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have been a diehard fan of Rosie Danan's since I first read The Roommate and then fell in love with her work even more with The Intimacy Experiment and I waited with baited breath for her to announce her next book. I was a bit apprehensive when I read the synopsis - I'm not really one for paranormal and curse breaking isn't really up my alley, but I would honestly read a grocery list from Danan.
Unfortunately, this didn't work for me quite as well as her previous work, but I still look forward to anything that comes from Danan in the future!
Do Your Worst is a perfect balance on the thin line between love and hate with main characters Clark and Riley.
When Riley decides to make her families work of curse breaking a legitimate business, I donโt think she realized she herself would be paying a price.
When on a job trying to break a curse thatโs at least 300 years old nothing could have prepared her for handsome Englishman Clark.
I absolutely adored this book and all the back and forth that comes with it.

I thought the love story was great, and the personal development of each of the leads was very satisfying. I was a little disappointed in the curse-breaking and the story behind the curse. I would've loved to have things more fleshed-out, maybe including flashbacks to the 1700s so we could see if Riley's hypotheses were correct about how the original lovers died. What did Phillipa do to her prisoner and why did he fall in love with her? I also would've loved more interaction with the fae and paranormal elements. Overall, it was a fun read. I would recommend to anyone who loves hard-hitting emotion, major spice and angst in their romances.
A Scottish archeologist who denies curses are real AND a curse breaker come to heads when they have the same assignment at a mysterious Scottish castle. It is another A+ read from Danan! I loved this. Rosie Danan is so good at the tropes and this is such a great enemies to lovers I canโt even.
Wowwww this was such a fun spooky read! The vibes were immaculate, the setting picturesque, and both characters perfectly imperfect. Emphasis on imperfect LOL.
I really enjoyed the way Riley and Clark were foils to one another--both working to overcome stigma to make something of themselves outside of their respective family legacies. I also thought it was clever of Rosie Danan to show us just how compatible they were at their core the first time they meet. We see the truth in that moment, only for extenuating circumstances (i.e., Clark being a dick) to ruin their small mirage of happiness. But as it turns out, Clark being a dick sets off a truly unbelievable sequence of events, mishaps, curse encounters, and the evolution of Clark and Riley's deep soul connection.
Their banter was hysterical, I laughed out loud more times than I could count. And every time something would go wrong because of the curse, baffling Clark, I couldn't hold in the giggles. Riley is tough as nails and doesn't let Clark get away with anything, despite his best efforts, but he meets her hit for hit as they work together. Their chemistry was palpable and their connection, like the curse, made its presence very known.
I highly recommend this if you've enjoyed Rosie Danan's previous works, or are just looking for a spooky steamy good time.
I was quite entranced in this magical story. This was a "I can't put this down" book. It had the enemies to lovers that gets your heart beating and a tension that'll make you melt. A world of romance with magic, secrets.I also love the settings of the Scottish Highlands.
Rosie Danan's work is just so fun to read. Do Your Worst is entirely unlike her other work, yet it has the same spicy, saucy, fun chemistry I was looking for.
In Do Your Worst, a curse breaker is hired to break an ancient curse at a Highland Castle where a straightlaced archeologist is working. You can guess where this goes and, yes, it's great.
Do Your Worst is one of my FAVORITE romantic reads of 2023!
Riley Rhodes is a curse breaker, following in her grandmother's footsteps. Sent to break the curse so Arden Castle can become a tourist destination, she doesn't expect the man she kissed the first night in Scotland to be the archeologist who she needs to work with. Clark Edgeware, professional archeologist, needs to prove to his Dad that he isn't playing around. He vows to avoid Riley to her face. Unfortunately, it turns out Riley has the opposite motive: Clark needs to get out NOW. But will that happen as they "do their worst" to each other? Or will the cursed castle have other plans?
I flew through Do Your Worst by Rosie Danan, instantly laughing at the banter between Riley and Clark. I loved the little pop culture references placed throughout and kept turning the pages to discover what happened next. As always, Rosie provide the spice and everything nice that one expects from her previous reads. Fans of Rosie's previous books as well as those looking to dive into a new witty banter, enemies read will want to pick up Do Your Worst!
Do Your Worst - review
Genre: Romance/Magical Realism
Rating: Really Enjoyed/3.5โญ
Troupes: enemies to lovers, workplace romance, forced proximity
Thanks @berkleypub for the gifted digital copy and having me on for the tour. This publishes on 11.14.23! Full review on Instagram to come, closer to publication.
I donโt think Iโve ever read a romance quite like this before! Riley is a curse breaker, hired to break a curse of an abandoned Scottish castle. Archaeologist Clark is also working at the site, trying to find and excavate any valuable artifacts. Clark is a huge skeptic of any curse, and vows to bring Rileyโs perceived perception to light.
The setting in this book was hands down my favorite part, but the curse breaking parts were creative and fun to watch unfold, too. Fans of The Roomate and Intimacy Experience might be a little disappointed with the steam level on this one though - while there was plenty of tension and banter there were only a few spicy scenes. I also really appreciated the (minimal) third act conflict - nothing was forced and felt real to the story. Looking forward to whatโs next from this author for sure, as sheโs quickly turning into an auto read for sure!
3.75 rounding up! this book felt very very long which is never a good sign for me, because even the longest books feel short if Iโm invested. unfortunately this is another case of โI finished this book and Iโm still not sure why they love each other.โ It was definitely funny and fun at times, but I donโt see myself ever drawn for a reread
This was outrageously good. The rivals to lovers. The banter.. THE TENSION. Itโs been a hot minute since a romance book has had me on the edge of my seat and reading the whole thing in one sitting. The setting with the hint of the magical element was so fun and I could picture everything playing out like a movie.
It seems like there could/will be a sequel and i absolutely cannot wait.
This is such a darling, sweet, unique delight of a book!
I am a sucker for enemies to lovers. But this was a little bit different. They meet and are completely attracted to each other and then meet again at the worksite where they proceed to try to undermine each other at every turn
I was really surprised that this book had some paranormal to it. I did not expect that but it was a lot of fun and it was a great vehicle for both of them learning about themselves and growing and falling in love.
The timeline is very short but I thought it was completely sweet and I loved it a lot!
This is one of those books that I was offered as an advanced reader copy and I have no regrets! I highly recommend this one. I really liked how decent and kind the hero was even when they were fighting. Here are a few quotes:
"Clark as a cat person made sense. He too was prickly, standoffish, and arrogantly territorial."
---
"No matter how many times she pushed him, how many ways she tried to prove she didn't want coddling, he always found a way to be careful with her."
---
"As it turned out, sometimes what you needed was someone who brought out the worst in you. There was a gift, she realized, that could only be exchanged between former enemies-permission to forgive yourself. Because if someone could see all your failures and faults, could actively seek out every possible reason to dislike you and somehow still come around in the end, well, maybe your worst wasn't so bad after all."
---
Safety deets
- There's an epilogue with them together.
- No OW/OM. And we don't hear about past partners.
- No third act break up.
- Consent done well!
I mean you have the Scottish Highlands, mysticism, secrets and magic. And add romance to that. What's not to love!!
Enemies to lovers at its finest. You have Clark who is straight forward, thinking, doesn't believe in anything that can't be proved by logic. And Riley is the granddaughter of a curse breaker. And is the next in a long line and her family who does this.
They are complete and total opposites yet are forced to work together. And of course the more time they spend together the more they see the other for who they truly are.
This book also had some amazing family dynamics that I absolutely loved. The two of them really help each other out to face the problems that are caused by their family and move forward.
There is also some great Scottish history. If you didn't already want to go to Scotland, you will by the time you finished this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
