First off, I will adore anything that Emily and Austin write.
Second, I adored this.
It was super cute and angsty and everything I needed. This gave such Taylor Swift vibes and it made my Swifty heart so happy. I loved Riley and Max together. It was amazing to go on Riley's adventure of self-discovery and tapping back in on who she is. This was such a great love story about two musicians, and I loved every second.
This book was a solid 3⭐️ read for me.
In The Breakup Tour, we follow along the story of Riley and Max. Riley is a recently divorced superstar that is going on tour and just wrote a whole album of breakup songs. One of those songs just so happens to be about her old flame from college, Max.
Max and Riley dated for 9 months and they both love music. In the past, when they dated, they made a lot of songs together and had this whole vision of rising to fame as one. Their relationship didn’t work in the past but when Max joins Riley on tour in the present day, will things change?
The first few chapters hooked me but the further I read into the book, I did get a little bored. I absolutely loved the FMC, Riley, but I struggled with the MMC, Max, a lot as he felt very “flat” to me. I feel as though there was no chemistry between the two MCs, spice was a bit awkward, and the romance was all towards the end and seemed a bit rushed. The pacing was a little off for me as well.
Overall, the idea and vibe is fun.
-superstar x ex bf

This was such a slow book, and I gave it a real try because the premise was really interesting considering everything happening in pop culture at the time, but this was a miss, I ended up DNF'ing this title at 84%. If you're going to use Taylor Swift as a muse for the book, at least make the characters interesting.
When will I learn that I just DON'T LIKE THESE AUTHORS??? I keep coming back because every synopsis sounds so good, but they just never work.
Emily and Austin have found the formula for the perfect celebrity second chance romance. Paired with their immaculate and harmonious writing styles, this book was a hands down stunner. I loved Riley and Max and their undeniable chemistry. The tenderness through distance and proximity that they had for each other and the way they grew together. Love!!!
This was my first book from the author duo Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka. I think this book was supposed to be about Taylor Swift (I've heard her music, but I don;t know anything about the personal life). Anyway - the story revolves around Riley and Max. They both need to work on their communication, but if they would have been better at that, the book could have been cut in half.
Wibberly and Siegemund-Broka's previous books are amongst some of my all time favorites, and while I really liked this one, I felt like I was missing some of the connection to the characters that I felt in their other works. I loved both Max and Riley, but Riley felt distant to the story and I wanted to get more of her. All of the really emotional scenes seemed to be from Max's point of view. Maybe that was a device to make us understand their personalities better, but Riley's character just felt a little flat sometimes. I loved the addition of the side characters in this story- especially Frank. As always, the writing was superb, crisp and fresh with a depth of emotionality and prose that makes you feel like you are reading a classic. The authors did a great job of incorporating music into the books. Overall, a very enjoyable read- just wish Riley had been a little more fleshed out.
i don't how to describe this one except to say it's very much t. swift-inspired, with notes (lol, get it) of the show nashville, or the movie begin again, or music and lyrics, or daisy jones and the six sorta. but like, in a watered down way? where the MMC has essentially no personality and their spark is... hardly there. it just felt flat to me, and didn't even really SCREAM swiftie magic in the way it could have (and tbh would have been better if it had). sorry to all the girlies!
This author duo never misses for me! I really enjoyed this unique take on music themed romances/ the fame trope. If you love books about second chances, I highly recommend this lighthearted and emotional story that will tug on your heartstrings!
This is a good book. The two main characters are Riley and Max. They meet in college, dated, and broke up. Ten years later Riley is a singer, who writes really good songs. Max runs his family’s assisted living center. She asks him to join her on tour. He states her will. There is still an attraction. They find that they are stil in love with each other.
I loved the themes in Do I Know You? so was excited to dive into this one. This didn't suck me in the same way. I think the theme was about the cost of following your passion. Does your passion (Riley's stardom in this case) make you sacrifice everything? Or is it possible to also have love? A lot of the book is the inner monologue of both of the main characters. And it's angst and sometimes self-indulgent. While this might be realistic (sometimes it takes a lot of discomfort and rumination to make a shift in behavior/belief), it went a little long for me. I think this is because I didn't find either character particularly relatable. Maybe someone with a passion for music or the arts might have a different experience.
Audio Review: The dual narration suited the dual POV chapters and the narrators were able to capture the feel of multiple characters. I'll listen to more audiobooks by these two; they were easy to listen to. It was a bit dramatic and over the top at times, but, honestly, they were capturing how it was written.
Thanks to the publisher for sharing a copy. All opinions are my own.
A cute, convincing romance. I believed the chemistry between the two main characters immediately, which is (to me) the most important thing in a romance. I definitely see the Taylor Swift inspiration and would easily recommend to any Taylor Swift fan.
One can't help noticing the parallels between the lead character Riley Wynn, a pop superstar who rose to fame with an album full of breakup songs, and real-life icon Taylor Swift. However, once the story begins to develop, the similarities end. Fresh off her high-profile divorce, Riley seeks out her college ex-boyfriend, the subject of the biggest hit of her record and her first love. She convinces Max to join her on tour, in an effort to hit back at her media-hungry ex-husband, but gets more than she bargained for. Fans of Taylor Swift will love envisioning their beloved singer in Riley's plot, and rooting for the singer to find her happily ever after.
Riley Wynn, a singer-songwriter, is dubbed the "Queen of Breakups" and becomes famous quickly. With a plan in hand, she intends to pay her first true love a visit while facing an ugly ex who claims one of her hit songs is about him.
Riley's inclination to put her own happiness at risk and Max's stubbornness were the two things in the novel that irked me since they prevented them from completely experiencing their true feelings. This is an incredibly touching, heartbreaking, and well written second chance romance, even though there were a few unnecessary angsty parts.
This is my first book from this author duo, and I cannot wait to read more.
Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
...Are You Ready For It?
Don't Blame Me for gushing about this book, because it is a Swifty's Wildest Dream come true. This book left me Enchanted. Sparks Fly in this Love Story.
I know All Too Well that this review is cheesy, but Don't Blame Me, just Tolerate It and Shake It Off. You Need To Calm Down and add this to a Blank Space on your TBR! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Breakup Tour is a book about music and heartbreak, three of my favorite things
The Breakup Tour, written by married couple and cowriters Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka, is a fast-paced, dramatic love story set during the most important concert tour Riley Wynn’s career.
After a messy divorce, music superstar Riley, also known as the Breakup Queen for her extensive repertoire of breakup song hits, is ready to pour all her feelings into her next album. This time, she wants to memorialize all of her heartbreaks and share them with the world. One song for each one. The most difficult one for her to write talks about her college love, Max, who walked out on her the morning they were supposed to go on their first tour together. And this is the one that ends up being the breakthrough single.
“Little lights, closed hearts
I felt the end in the start
Words I didn’t know you didn’t mean
‘I’ and ‘love’ and ‘you’ would make me see”
Until You by Riley Wynn
Riley never looked back. She wanted stardom. Max wanted to save his family business. She wanted the world and he wanted to stay home. They were fundamentally incompatible, but he’s never left her mind.
When her narcissistic ex-husband starts to take credit for inspiring the hit song, Riley decides it’s time for the world to know who really inspired the heartbreak she longingly sang about in her record.
Max doesn’t regret his decision to not join Riley on tour, but still holds his old feelings for her close. When Riley shows up after a decade, he sees an opportunity to explore what could’ve been and decides to join her tour to duet their song on the stage. As feelings resurface the question becomes, can the Breakup Queen still be a star if she’s happy?
‘Long Live‘ musical romances
If you liked Daisy Jones & the Six or A Star is Born, this book has similar vibes, but with a more streamlined plot. The love story in The Breakup Tour doesn’t span decades or big changes in each character’s personal circumstances, it’s focused on how the two main characters, Riley and Max, reconnect and decide if the feelings they buried 10 years earlier are worth exploring.
Swifties and non-Swifties will enjoy it
Although many say it’s Taylor Swift inspired, and the author references Ms. Swift in the dedication, Gavin DeGraw’s Not Over You is the song stuck in my head when I think about this story. The tempo & the lyrics, are so on point with the story’s pace and how it made me feel—upbeat and hopeful. But at the same time it’s also very melancholic, so I would sprinkle in some ‘Tis the Damn Season to describe the book’s prose.
This year I have struggled to focus but The Breakup Tour captivated me from page one because there’s lyricism in the writing. The Breakup Tour is one long, passionate, and beautiful love song. It was perfect. I loved every page and every word of it.
I am a Swiftie first and a person second, so you KNOW I had to be first in line to read what is clearly a fanfic reimagining of Taylor and her story of fame and heartbreak.
First of all, I tried so hard to love this. I really did. But this book is a great example of telling not showing. I feel like Riley and Max hardly even talked let alone reconnected in this deep profound way. It just gave me NOTHING.
Also the music metaphors were to be frank, exhausting. I liked them at first, I can get down with flowery writing but after the 100th melody/lyric/note simile I was done done done.
Their break ups were dramatic, with no reason to be since they haven't talked in 10 years and appear not to speak even when they're living on the same bus!?
While clearly marketed to Swifties (which I proudly am!) this book ended up being so compelling and unputdownable. People were worried this would be offensive and invasive to Taylor, but it clearly felt inspired by her and not like straight up fanfic of her. I loved the way the authors described how music made Riley feel because it was so relatable. And I’m a sucker for a second chance romance. This delivered in every way. Swiftie or not, this is a romance that can be enjoyed by all.
3.5/5 stars!
My swifty loving heart loved all the lyrical and T Swift references throughout. Though this took awhile to truly catch my interests it eventually did.
Second chance romance
angsty moments
Taylor Swift fan fiction
quick light read
dual POV
This book felt slightly shallow and that can be both a good thing and a bad thing. It makes the reading experience very fast and requires very little brain use to follow along but it leaves you with very little connection. I however found the saving grace to be the behind the scenes of touring, schedules, and seeing the life of celebs. As someone who reads romance books for the romance that was a nice change for me. Overall I recommend this for everyone who loves T Swift and is looking for a fun summer read.
I don’t think it’s a secret that I am a hugeeeee swiftie! 😅 so when I saw that this one was inspired by the Queen herself I knew I NEEDED to read it. 😉
It’s a sweet second chance romance that follows rising star Riley Wynn and her reconnecting with her college boyfriend (and song inspiration) Max Harcourt. Riley convinces Max to come on tour with her, and you’ll have to read to find out what happens. 😏
If you’re an audiobook reader I highly suggest grabbing the audio for this one, the narrators did an amazing job bringing these two to life.
If you too are a swifty, you catch tons of Easter egg references, and if you’re not don’t worry you will still enjoy this one! 😊
