Looking for a suburban thriller that’s White Locus meets Nine Perfect Strangers? The Manor House is the perfect blend! The main characters, Tom and Nicole, are fabulously over-the-top rich after winning the lottery and are trying to fit in with their wealthy neighbors. They have just built a giant glass barn in a secluded area. Their closest neighbors, Sasha and Olly, live in a traditional English manor, fit with features like a Great Hall and servants’ quarters. The two homes are almost as much a part of the book as the main characters, and their descriptions bring them to life. Similarly, the two couples are fleshed out so well that each new twist feels like a true shock.
This book is definitely a thriller, with a suspicious death happening within the first few chapters. And as the death is investigated, the intensity goes even higher. This will definitely keep your attention with its quick pace and sneaky twists!
Thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for the advanced copy!
Lottery winners Nicole and Tom are living the dream when Tom ends up dead.
This was an interesting book, but it fell a little short for me. I liked the roving POV, each chapter is different, but found the characters themselves to be not my favorite. Everyone has secrets and are trying to get away with a lot so it was a hard book to actually trust anyone. The mystery itself was good and I wanted to know what actually happened. This thriller will absolutely find its audience!
Thank you to the author and publisher for the gifted copy!
Tom and Katie won the lottery and built the Glass Barn, and are now neighbors with the residents of the Manor House, Sasha and Olly, and their housekeeper Kitty. One tragic day Tom dies in the Glass Barn’s swimming pool, and the police suggest it may be something more than just an accident. This leaves Nicole mourning, and wondering if she might be in danger too.
I liked that this book had short chapters and constantly changing povs. This kept the book engaging and quick moving through what could have been a slow moving plot. The very ending was really great, and I didn’t see it coming at all. This isn’t the best book I’ve ever read, but it was a good read, and I would recommend it.
Nicole and Tom win the lottery and build their dream house expecting live out their years in happiness. But of course that doesn’t happen. I’ wanted to like this book but I didn’t care for any of the characters (and there were a lot) and the pacing was a bit slow. Some may like it, but it just wasn’t for me. Thanks to NetGalley for a chance to read and review.
Be careful what you wish for. A lottery win gives a young couple the home of their dreams. But dreams turn into nightmares when a death rocks their exclusive neighborhood. Along with finding the killer, there are many more secrets to uncover that have been hidden for years.
This is a really good example of how well do you really know your neighbors??
I got this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I give The Manor House 4/5 stars.
I really liked this book but the ending lost a star. The whole book was a good buildup but the ending was just okay. I loved the story and wanted to keep reading to find out what happened and it was still a great read.
4.5 🌟
This murder mystery drew you in and took you through an entire funhouse of mazes to find your killer/s.
Just when you are sure it’s one person, another shows you just what they are capable of.
By the end, you begin to realize maybe no one is innocent.
However, it did seem that everyone got exactly what was coming to them.
I’d recommend this book to all my murder mystery, psychological thriller friends.
It definitely keeps you on your toes and gives you a bit of a different perspective about winning the lottery.
This is my first Gilly Macmillan book and I was hooked from the first page. It was the perfect who did it mystery.
I like how everyone seemed to be a suspect and I didn't see the twists and turns coming with Kitty and Anna. I also like the twist with Nicole and her secret from the lottery winning! Just the perfect amount of revenge too! It was a great read and I am excited to read other books by this author. Thank you for the advance reading copy.
Another great thriller from Gilly Macmillan.
A murder mystery with no shortage of suspects. The Manor House is a fast paced story with twists at every turn. This one will keep you guessing, with surprises right up to the very end.
Thanks to William Morrow, Gilly Macmillan, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.
What a rollercoaster! What started as a horrible tragedy turned into a crazy twist of a story with a very satisfying ending. Loved the intertwined stories, the characters (Kitty!) and how is all plays out in the end. Gilly Macmillan again delivering with a great read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in advance of publication.
This book was unputdownable. There’s so much action and dialogue, and though there’s a lot of ~women doubting their own minds~, it wasn’t the main plot point. This was a pleasant take on that type of thriller formula. The way the author weaves in the story lines was delicious. I will say that I guessed a few of the (many) twists. The ending was kind of meh… and justice wasn’t as sweet as it could have been. Let’s just say there’s gonna be a lot of important information uncovered when the septic tank needs to be cleaned in like 40 years. This author uses a very intelligent (sometimes too much so) vocabulary. There is also so much British slang sometimes I couldn’t keep up.
I had no idea what I was in for when I began this book. It moved at a brisk pace and there was never a dull moment.
Tom and Nicole are a young couple who win the lottery and decide to build their dream home. It sits adjacent to the historic Manor House that is home to Anna, a widow, and her housekeeper Kitty. At some point Anna allows a couple to move in with her and that decision has some devastating consequences for all involved.
Olly and Sasha, the couple who have moved into the Manor House, immediately begin claiming it as their own. Olly is an aspiring writer and Sasha teaches yoga classes. They befriend Tom and Nicole, with an eye on their modern new home in their sights.
Soon Tom is found floating dead in the pool and everyone is a suspect. Complicating matters is the woodland behind the home that often has campers and homeless wanderers passing by.
Also, there is Tom’s old friend Patrick, who is always needing money. Patrick and Tom had a big falling out after the lottery win, but as soon as Tom died, Patrick showed up to comfort Nicole.
I felt so sorry for the poor detectives on the case. There was so much unraveling at once that it was hard of them to know who and what to focus on to solve the case. But were they solving one murder or two? Or was the murder simply and accident? This one kept me guessing until the very end.
Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for allowing me to read an advance copy. I’m pleased to offer my honest review and recommend to readers who love mystery and suspense.
The Manor House
This was my favorite psychological thriller of the year. Period!
You know how a good book can be ruined by the ending? Well, this was a great book that got knocked out of the park by the ending!
I loved it. It checked all of the boxes. Cliffhangers at every chapter’s end. I wanted to chug read it. I actually liked every POV.
There was the right level of ahhhhh! Intrigue by every person and what people are capable of.
It was tied up nearly.
I. Loved. It.
Y’all. Read this book!
A 5.
Thank you NetGallery for the preview.
Another fantastic read from Gilly Macmillan.
Her work just gets better with every book.
I love a good mystery but especially a good plot twist!!
"It can't be that found such a wonderful thing could have caused him an injury. That wouldn't be right. Life isn't that unfair." Or is it.

I don’t think I’m a crime book girl. I found this book so boring and dragged out. I just didn’t really find myself caring what happened.
Really enjoyed this book. Gilly MacMillan is always on point for me. Well devolved characters and twists, which I love!
Nicole and Tom win the lottery and build a custom, tech-heavy glass dream house on the grounds of an ancient manor house and settle into their new life of luxury. They're living the dream, but then Tom is found dead in the pool. Nicole is devastated and turns to her neighbors from the manor house -- a young couple and their housekeeper -- for support while his death is investigated. Then Tom's best friend shows up and Nicole is even more confused about who to trust. And the manor house is hiding secrets of its own...
This was a page-turning read, full of twists and turns and red herrings galore - perfect for curling up and reading under a blanket on a cold winter day. I had plenty of theories, but was kept guessing until the end about what *exactly* happened. Another winner from Gilly Macmillan!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read this book and supply an unbiased review. The Manor House by Gilly Macmillan is the first book that I have read by this author. It was an interesting concept of knowing that many people are involved from the beginning, but you don't know how or what part they play in this complicated story. I did find the book felt a little long because of all the setup, but it didn't lose my interest. The time setting up each character felt in depth. I gave the book 3 stars because it took so long getting to the actual outcome of the story.
Tom and Nicole are proud new owners of a beautiful house called "The Glass Barn." Start of the art technology, beautiful views, pool, theater room, and everything you have ever dreamed of. Nicole returns home one day to find Tom dead in their pool and runs to the neighbors for help. The neighbors Olly and Sasha leave Nicole with their housekeeper Kitty and go to assist Tom as the police arrive. As the police question everyone around Tom, things are not as they seem, especially with the neighbors and housekeeper.
The cover and premise of THE MANOR HOUSE is what made me want to read this book. I loved the idea of two average people winning the lottery and creating their own dream home. I thought some of characters were very annoying and I knew exactly what they were up to. I had hoped there would be some shocking moments, but I found everything to be predictable. The story was a bit longer than I like and the ending was just ok. I will certainly continue to read the author's future novels but sadly, this one was not my favorite of hers.
Many Thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for my gifted copy.
What a fun book!! This story was completely full of surprises and twists that you will never see coming. I cannot say to much without giving away any spoilers but this book starts off with a standard base of an old manor house in a rural area and the speeds out of the gate with a very quirky mystery that has a thoroughly satisfying ending. A lucky or unlucky couple as it goes wins the lottery and builds what seems to be their dream house near to a crumbling manor house but no one is who they seem to be. I would love to see this done as a movie with a comedic flair added to the script.
