This is the perfect book. It did have some heartache and I did cry. I felt like I was there and with the characters. I absolutely loved this book and read it in one day. I would definitely recommend this book.
I am a huge fan of WWII historical fiction books. And Roberta Kagan is one of the authors who excels in this genre. This is the third and final book in the Blood Sisters trilogy. Having read all three books, I found this one a little more appealing than the first two. This one actually reveals the the fates of each of the blood sisters … Anna, Bernie, Elica, and Dagna. While focused on the last days of WWII and the time after the war ends, you will be able to discover who lives, who dies, and how they survived this atrocious time in history. This book focuses on survival, betrayal, hope, and repentance. Experiencing love, friendship, and trust through the lives of these women was touching as well as the horrible things that occurred in both Auschwitz and Ravensbruck concentration camps. A difficult and emotional read but I hope by getting lost in the pages of WWII historical fiction stories, we will never repeat the atrocities that were prevalent during that time in history.
Thank you to NetGalley and Roberta Kagan Publishing for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Danger, heartbreak and the most difficult of choices is what the sisters are facing. The perfect ending to a memorable tale.
When Forever Ends explored the themes of survival, hope, betrayal, trust, love, friendship, repentance and acceptance. In a world full of horrors during WWII, we read about the grimness and crimes committed at both Auschwitz and Ravensbruck.. This story chilled me to the core and definitely will be the last book of its kind I ever read again. Books written about WWII is flooding the market these days...no longer for me.
This book was the third in a series, I ended up reading the other two before reading this one. Four friends as young girls make a blood pact to be sisters forever, Anna, Bernie, Elica, and Dagny. Anna is Jewish and things are beginning to get tough for her and her family.
Anna had been living with a gypsy camp until Ulf takes her away saying he has her parents. But he doesn’t instead his twin brothers are with him and they help Anna to escape Ulf.
There was some repetition of some chapters in this series, I don’t know if this was done on purpose or not. I enjoyed seeing the story coming to an end and look forward to reading another book by the author.
When Forever Ends is the final book of the Blood Sister Series. I read all 3 and plan to read more books by Roberta Kagan.
When you read historical fiction or nonfiction books about WWII, you do not learn a lot about the bad guys that did the horrible things. They are not the main characters in the story. But in this series you meet all four girls when they are young and I hoped that their character would improve as they grew into women. It was hard when a woman made bad choices that had horrible consequences for one of the other four.
What a horrible time to grow up! The history in this book helped me understand so many things that I struggled with in the past about Hitler and World War II. How and why did good German people develop such a mean streak after Hitler came to power. I had never thought about the fact that Germans could do anything they wanted to Jews with no consequences.
It was hard for me to figure out how this book was going to end. There was no way that the ending could be happy with all that had happened to the four girls/women. The ending was realistic and consistent with the personalities of the girls.
Not my cup of tea. Way more crude graphics than were probably needed. I wish I could have loved it but I didn't.
The author concludes the story of the blood sisters with this book. This one takes the reader past the end of WWII. The author keeps you turning pages as she draws you into the story. You will experience a range of emotions. Someone does get a happy ending, but you need to read the books to find out. I read an electronic copy courtesy of Net Galley.
When Forever Ends is the third and final installment in the Blood Sisters series of WWII historical novels. I had not read either of the first two books, but am happy to say this can be read by itself since Ms Kagan deftly works in enough background information interspersed throughout this volume to make the work easy to follow on its own.
The book is set in Austria, Italy, Slovakia and Germany beginning in 1944 and flashing back as far as 1940 and then forward briefly into the postwar period of 1945-58.
The timeframe and locations cover a significant amount of WWII territory. The four main character’s (the blood sisters) storylines as well as several important secondary characters all combine to give the reader a lot to follow. I quite like epic stories but my one complaint is that it was challenging to stay on top of everything when large blocks of reading intervene between continuation of a single storyline. For example, the opening storyline in the prologue is not picked up again until you reach 53% of the book at which point the prologue seems almost too distant to remember well.
I found the characters and storylines to be well developed and insightful. The concentration camp scenes are particularly brutal, even for a seasoned reader of Holocaust material. A definite plus is that the perspective is not limited to those groups who the Nazis sought to torture and exterminate. We are given a fair amount of insight into the twisted minds of several Nazi characters and ordinary citizens who were basically apolitical. There is no attempt to make the reader sympathetic to any of the bad actors, but just to provide some perspective on all sides of the story. Beyond the war themes this is also a book about friendship and loyalty, how they endure or crumble. Regardless of how one views the author’s assessment it provides food for thought and a good basis for important conversation.
This is the first of Ms Kagan’s many books that I have read. I would definitely read her again
Thank you to the author, the publisher The Book Whisperer, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an ARC.
In the last book of the Blood Sisters Trilogy Roberta Karan takes back to the last days of World War II and the period after the war. We follow the lives of the blood sisters and know the fate of them during the war, who died, who survived and how did they survived.
This book is a fitting conclusion to the story of these four young girls who grew up in a very convoluted world and became women during a terrible time in history. When times are hard, it is said, that you know the inner truth of a human being, in this trilogy we really get to see the inner truth of each one of them and how the choices they make in life influenced and impacted the lives of the other ones and the people surrounded them, and most importantly the outcome in life of each one of them.
In the last book of The Blood Sisters series, Roberta Kagan picks up Anna, Elica, Bernie, and Dagna’s stories where they left off in book two -- all three surviving women are at very different places in their lives under Nazi rule. Kagan also introduces new characters into the mix -- Aria, who adopts Elica’s son Theo (now Enzo) with her husband Mateo, who works in Mussolini’s government. Once again, Kagan brings the horrors of World War II to life in Anna and Ulf’s twisted relationship, while she explores some of the horrors of concentration camps through Dagna and Moriah’s (another new character) perspectives. Kagan continues to develop her characters, and this third installment highlights the characters’ growth during and after World War II. Kagan’s characters remain relatable and realistic, and she has created interesting and dynamic new characters (Aria and Moriah in particular) for this third installment. Continuing the dark (yet true) themes from the last book, When Forever Ends comes with content warnings, yet Kagan handles these themes well. A satisfying conclusion to The Blood Sisters series, When Forever Ends answers many questions and brings Anna, Elica, Bernie, and Dagna’s stories to a satisfying conclusion.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. This book was the conclusion of the trilogy “ Blood Sisters” series, although this book can be read as a standalone, it was very helpful to have read the previous books ( I was fortunate to be able to read the second book, “ My Sister’s Betrayal “, thanks to NetGalley), it helped with following the story line. I thought that this book was better than the second book, I thought the pace was a little faster, perhaps I liked the character of Anna a bit more than the other characters, it seemed that this book focused on her story a bit more than Dagna and Elica. This book did not sugar coat the horrors of the concentration camps and the brutality of the guards. If you are a reader of historical fiction this is a good story..
I was waiting for this book to come out!! This is the third novel in The Blood Sisters series.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I don’t want to give away too much, but this book does not disappoint. It continues where book two ends and tells about the girls’ struggles to survive.
Many thanks to the author, The Book Whisper and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
What another great book by Roberta Kagen. It is a great finale to the first two books. It wrapped it all up so completely. Thank you for the great job you did! I can’t wait for your next book!
Courtesy of Netgalley and The Book Whisperer, I received the ARC of When Forever Ends by Roberta Kagan. Third in a WWII trilogy, there is enough background information that this could be a stand alone novel. Compelling, emotional, portraying both cruelty and hopefulness, this story of childhood friends from Vienna and their various paths navigating the horrors of the Nazis didn't cover up historical situations. Highly recommend!
This book was absolutely heartbreaking. This could definitely be read as a stand alone story, but I'm sure reading the rest of the series would help some with character development. I was enthralled by the story and couldn't put it down, but there was certainly some very difficult topic covered throughout the course of the story. If you like Historical Fiction, especially set during WWII, this would be a great series to pick up.
The only downside I really have is that I had a hard time distinguishing when the story was switching back and forth between character. I wish chapters had been labeled based on who was talking or whose story was being told.
Thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for the copy to review!- 3.5 stars!
"L'chaim, to life"
When Forever Ends is the heartbreaking conclusion to the Blood Sisters trilogy which focused on the four blood sisters and their lives through World War II. This story was an emotional roller-coaster as Roberta explored the relationships between the girls and and their intense emotions as they grew from girls to young ladies in a time so difficult and uncertain.
This book was slightly slower paced than the first two which lessened the emotional impact to a degree but you were still on tenterhooks, needing to know if Anna would also succumb to the circumstances of her birth. This series, as I have said before focuses not on the actual events of the WWII but the relationships set in this period. Your emotions are tested as you meet characters who are pure and kind and ones who are more susceptible to the darker sides of their nature and so crueler and more callous. There is vindication in this book as the ends tie up well and each person getting what they deserve, but you cannot help but wonder if it was all too neatly done? You hurt for Anna and all that she has lost despite being a kind and generous soul who only wanted the best for her friends. Bernie, who was willing to sacrifice it all to be a good friend. Dagna who was cruel and Elica, a selfish girl who only cared only for herself.
This was an excellent trilogy which generally is quick paced and has you flying through it as you are pulled into needing to know what happens next. Pick this up if you are a fan of excellently written historical fiction with a balance of character growth and emotionally charged drama.
Thank you to Roberta Kagan and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this trilogy.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I was excited to see how the series was going to end and yet didn't want the story to end.
I think the entire series was well written and the finaly was no exception.
I will say this not a book that you can read without reading the previous title. I tried that with book two and it was confusing. I then found book one reread two and now I'm a Roberta Kagan superman.
A very heartbreaking story full of betrayal.
I’m sorry to say that the story seemed very disjointed to me. The flow seemed choppy and awkward at times.
(Please be aware there is very sensitive topics within this story)
This is the last book in The Blood Sisters trilogy. I read book 2 (which was great) but I will go back to read book 1 as these characters are fascinating. Bernie, Anna, Elica and Dagna became blood sisters when they were children. They all came from different backgrounds, but as children this didn’t matter to them. They all have different experiences in WWII (as young women) and I couldn’t wait to find out the end of their stories. They all had different challenges during this time. These women were all living in Austria when the war began. There are also some characters that are a part of the story in fascist Italy under Mussolini. I found the character’s dilemmas and decisions very thought provoking and can’t imagine how people in this time found the strength and courage that they did. I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of this series.
