I enjoyed this one, I think having read the original series, serpent and dove would be really helpful to understand our main character better
I really wanted to like this as much as serpent and dove, but I really hate Jean luc. I struggled with celie. I understand that she has been through alot, but she is so annoying. I kept putting down this book because I disliked the characters so much. If it wasn't for it being in the serpent and dove world, I wouldn't have finished.
Celie did grow during the story and the vampires honestly were my favorite part. I am going to be reading on because by the end I was invested.
Finally a good Vampire romance book for YA! It has been a while since I have read a good YA book since Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones series. Tracy Wolff’s Crave series was good, but more juvenile. Celie is perfect in everyone’s eyes being kind and sweet and engaged to Jean Luc, captain of the huntsman. But everyone including her fiancé underestimates Celie’s true gifts. In fact, Celie doesn’t know these gifts as the people who care for her continue to treat her as glass and protect her. After the strange murder of her friend, Celie puts herself in danger to investigate causing her to be kidnapped by the vampire King, Michal. Michal is handsome and cunning, but dangerous and Celie must find a way to escape him and find the killer before the killer finds her.
There is an intensity to this story that drew me in immediately. I am just disappointed I have to wait a year to read the next book in the series.
I loved the Serpent & Dove story in the first two books, but hated how it ended. Yet when I heard Shelby was writing a vampire book, I was really excited and wanted to give her writing another shot. This book gave me those same feelings I first experienced with Serpent & Dove, I found myself really enjoying it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre, vampire books, or how have enjoyed her previous books.
Unfortunately, I think it was too long since I have read the first of these books by Shelby Mahurin. I had a hard time getting into the story, I felt it was confusing, and far too long. I am simply not one that want pages and pages (or chapters) of detail.
I know there will be many that love this book, I simply was not the right audience.
Mahurin can do no wrong! Serpent and Dove was an incredible trilogy and this book is no different. I love staying in the same world, but focusing on different characters. I look forward for what she continues to do
"The Scarlet Veil" is a highly anticipated continuation of the captivating world introduced in "Serpent and Dove," one of my absolute favorite books. The prospect of delving deeper into Celie's character has me genuinely thrilled. The author's ability to weave a rich and immersive narrative, coupled with the intriguing magical elements, promises an enthralling experience. My eagerness to explore more of this fantastical realm and follow Celie's journey is palpable, and I anticipate "The Scarlet Veil" to be a worthy addition to the series, offering readers another opportunity to be spellbound by the enchanting world created by the talented author.
I am excited that this is book #1, not sure if it will be a series or a duology but I will read whatever comes next. This story was multi-faceted and I definitely had to pay attention when I was listening to this synthesized voicegalley. I love Célie's journey as she figures out what she wants from life.
The vibes were immaculate with this book! I loved the narrator and how amazing they brought the book to life. I thought this book was a fun vampy read.
I thought I couldn't love this even more than the Serpent and Dove trilogy, but osmehow I did! Wonderfully magical and edging as upper YA with delicious vampire lore. Perfect in audio format
This one was hard to follow but I LOOOOVED getting more from Celie!!!
Also, vampires? Yes pls!!
I fully believe that this was only hard for me to follow because I chose to go into it without having finished Gods&Monsters… so it’s fully my own dang fault lol
Still amazing, though I’d expect no less from Shelby!!
I was so excited to dive back into the world of "Serpent and Dove" and could not wait to check this book out. Shelby Mahurin writes her world and her characters with such descriptions and details that I can envision them as I am walking alongside. In this story, we get to see more of Celie and her role as a Chasseur while getting to know her more. I found myself liking and rooting for her story more with this book. Michal and his vampire family were a perfect fit for this story and I cannot wait to see more of them throughout! Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Audio for an advanced copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own!
As soon as I saw this I knew I had to have it. Any chance to go back to the world of Serpent and Dove and I am in. This author is in auto grab for me me too! I just love Célie. She had so much character growth in the series and this book. Also give me all the Michal I can get. I am such a fan of a bad boy. I love how fierce Célie is in this one. The story was just so good. I cannot wait to read more in this new series. Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Audio for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it hit all the points I needed! The audiobook was ok but I did actually buy the “real” one.
I will be honest, I picked up The Scarlet Veil for the simple fact that I read that it had vampires in it.
What I did not realize is that this takes place in the same world as Mahurin's Serpent & Dove series. I only read the first book in that series so I'm not 100% sure, but I do think that this series may spoil it.
With that aside, I really enjoyed The Scarlet Veil. The story follows Celie Tremblay, the first huntswoman. Celie has had a traumatic past, but she is now engaged to Jean Luc, the ruler of the huntsmen and is taking her new role as huntswoman very seriously. The huntsmen are not very welcoming to Celie and she is dealing with Jean Luc keeping secrets from her. When Celie finds a dead body, she decides she is going to find the killer and prove her worth to the huntsmen.
The worldbuilding of The Scarlet Veil is breathtaking. There are witches, vampires, love triangles, twists, turns, and secrets to be unraveled. I was fully invested in the mystery Celie was working to uncover as well as all of the places she finds herself in and the characters she crosses paths with. This was very nostalgic for me as a reader who loved YA fantasy in my youth (and still to this day tbh). There have been a multitude of vampire book releases lately, most of them disappointing (to me). The Scarlet Veil definitely came through with vampires and vampire lore.
My only issue with this book was it's length. It is close to 700 pages! The story kept my attention for the most part but there were moments where I think things could have been sped up a bit. Other than that, The Scarlet Veil brings all the best of vampires, witches, romance, and mystery. The reveals surprised me and the love triangle intrigued me. Mahurin knows how to create an intoxicating world with amazing characters.
If you too crave a vampire novel that reminds you of the one's you read in your youth, look no further. I am glad the teens of our current age are getting a solid vampire series! I look forward to the next installment.
I loved the story but wasn't a fan of the synthetic voice used for this preview. The book itself was great!
For anyone nursing that Serpent and Dove hangover, Scarlet Veil is the cure for you, following Célie Tremblay's story following the series. If you are picking this book up for the first time, it does provide some spoilers for the trilogy prior to it. In some series, the order is not specific, but I would have been disappointed had I read this before Serpent and Dove.
The great thing about this series is that we have the same cast of characters from the beloved trilogy; while their stories are evolving, we can appreciate why they are in the place they are because of that understanding from previous books. I'm so glad Célie has this book. While she might not have been my favorite character in Serpent and Dove, she grew on me towards the end of the series, completely stealing my heart in Scarlet Veil.
The writing is just as lyrical and beautiful, There's murder, there's romance, there's vampires, could a girl ask for more?
Thanks to Netgalley and HarperTeen for the ARC of this vampiric spinoff!
I somehow did not notice this was a spin-off of the Serpent & Dove trilogy and went in having only read 2/3 of them. I definitely spoilered myself, but I wasn’t confused about what was happening without that one. This was very interesting and the end left me wanting more! Good for this spooky season, I loved the ghosts and vampires.
Celie happens upon a body of a friend which leads to her learning that her fiance has been hiding a string of deaths from her. Seeing as this is now part of her job, he should not be hiding it. She sets out to figure out what is going on and ends up down a dangerous path with vampires.
Opinion
This will surely become the favorite of many young adults. With all of the important elements of a good fantasy included (romance, vampires, mystery, youth), there is just something that is captivating about it.
Even though the book is over 600 pages, I can see this gaining a following and leads me to ask what the group would call themselves. (Scarlets? Veiled Fandom/VF for short?) Either way, I was absorbed in the story the whole way through. Of course, like any good book in a series, it ends in a cliff hanger leaving the reader to wonder what will happen next.
Many thanks to Net Galley and to Harper Teen for providing me with an ARC of this book.
I listened to this book as a voice galley. It was an interesting experience. I am looking forward to listening to the actually audiobook at a later time.
This is my first Shelby Mahurin book. The premise of the Serpent & Dove trilogy didn't intrigue me so I wasn't introduce to Celie in the previous books. I found this story gripping and fast paced. Loved the vampires!! The cliffhanger ending is going to stay in my mind for a while.. Looking forward to book 2 (hopefully soon)!!
