This series was a big let down for me. It moves super slow and didn't pick up even in book 2. Unfortunately I won't be continuing in the series.
Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands is the second installment of the Emily Wilde series following the dryadology professor Emily on her next adventure with Wendell and their search for the nexus- a door to multiple faerie realms.
I can't stop thinking about HOW GOOD THIS BOOK IS!!! Like I put it down and immediately wanted to start it over again from the beginning. I've tried to write this review for days now and I just can't put into words how good this is. I think that in itself is a good enough review. If you are a fan of fantasy, the scientific method, romance, folklore, or mischief, this series is for you.
5/5 stars, wish I cold give it 6/5. Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this e-ARC.
A delightful, romantic follow up to the first Emily Wilde book. Fawcett has a gift for making her alternative history feel like real history, peopled with characters and worlds who are delightfully larger-than-life.
Such a perfect sequel. I literally could not love a book series more!! I am absolutely in love with Bambleby and Emily. The world-building is phenomenal. It feels like I am a scholar in dryadology!
The second installment of the Emily Wilde series is even better than the first. I was transported to a magical realm with faeries and other mystical creatures that gave this story so much whimsy.
Genius scholar Emily Wilde had a more personal reason to dive headfirst into her folklore research. Looking to help her onetime rival, Wendell Bambleby, find his way back home.
This adventure was a delight. The quirky footnotes, the magical realms and the personality conflicts all added to the story.*
*Looking forward to the next book
A fantastic follow-up to Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faerieland. This sequel expands on the world and characters from the first novel in satisfying ways. The worlds of faerie continue to be equal parts mysterious, sinister, and alluring. Emily continues to be an entertaining and memorable narrator, and delightfully aromantic romantic lead.
Fans of Oliva Atwater and Diana Wynn Jones are very likely to enjoy this series.
Let me preface this review by saying I absolutely adored the first book in this series. When I saw the 2nd book on NetGalley, I immediately requested it and eagerly hoped to be granted access.
In my humble opinion, this entry in the series was just as good as the first, certainly not suffering from a sophomore slump, and that ending! I am not entirely sure how I will survive until the next entry in the series.
As with the first novel, this book is told as journal entries from Emily, and picks up the morning after Wendell's birthday. The action quickly ramps up with assassins from Wendell's stepmother arriving during his lecture, with crisis narrowly averted. From there, Emily and Wendell, along with newly introduced companions are off on a University funded expedition to locate a nexus of Faerie doors that will hopefully lead them to Wendell's lost kingdom.
With the introduction of new characters, is a new opportunity for Emily to display character growth and development. Readers of the previous novel will certainly not be disappointed. I feel that other reviewers have been far more eloquent than I, but I will point out that I devoured this book in a single day.
Thank you to Random House Ballantine and NetGalley for the electronic ARC of this novel for review.
This book was a wonderful romp through Faerie and the perfect follow-up to Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries. I loved Emily in the first book and again, she is absolutely a joy to spend time with. She is intelligent, curmudgeonly, often one step ahead of the others around her and nonetheless flawed — all the best things characters have to offer.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a fantastical adventure, a sweet love story, and a nod to the seriousness of folklore studies. More footnotes, though! I wished more more opportunities for her characteristic footnotes. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC copy.
I need more Emily/Wendell moments! They are my favorite. Poor Wendell was sick for a lot of this book so it was up to Emily to accomplish finding Wendell’s door while mapping the Otherlands.
I was happy Poe made appearances and that quite a few new characters were introduced. Even though I enjoy Emily and Wendell I’m glad that while Wendell was indisposed we had other characters to interact with Emily so it’s more than just her thoughts in her journal.
My absolute favorite part is definitely Wendell’s entry in Emily’s journal at the end. Just like at the end of book one I’m really hoping for more!
This book was so much fun! I love Emily’s outlook and dedication to learning. Her relationship with Wendell is endearing as well as how they care for each other. This series continues to be a unique take on the world of faeries and folklore as well as an adventure into a new world. Emily’s personality and humor will resonate with the socially quirky who stumble to build friendships and connection. Great read!
This book was received from NetGalley for my honest review. Thank you!
This was so delightful--a perfect follow up to the first book in the series that leaves room for more while giving a satisfying ending. I love Emily so much as a main character, and there are quite a few wonderful twists and surprises! This series has placed itself solidly in my favorites.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc! Opinions are my own.
I read an advanced copy via NetGalley.
I adored the first Emily Wilde book it delivered an innovative twist to fairy lore, all through the viewpoint of a sassy academic. I found the sequel fantastic, a light-hearted romp, though a bit slower to engage me at first. Emily and Wendell are back at Cambridge as the story begins. Wendell is still under a considerable threat from fairy kind, and Emily is seeking means to save him--but hasn't moved fast enough. Assassins go after Wendell on campus, expediting their journey to the Alps, where they hope to find a magical door in the area in which two scholars vanished decades before. This is where the story really picked up for me, as adventure blends with book savvy to delightful results.
I’m obsessed!!!
Not only do I love the format of this book, the journal style with the occasional educational notes added in but I LOVED the story! As a kid I would look through a faerie encyclopedia every day and this brought me back to that in the best way!
Heather has such a lovely writing style and a way of making characters so endearing. I love the setting of this book and all of the details about the different folk and the cultures of the little towns we come across. Wendell and Emily’s interactions are everything to me.
I cannot wait until book 3!
Oh how I love these characters and their stories. The way Emily Wilde goes through the world is not like something I have ever read before. The adventure, the quips, then create story telling. It all is so captivating. I am so grateful that I got to travel with Emily and Wendell once again!!
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for the opportunity to read the ARC for this wonderful book!
This cozy delight was such a fun read! I was so happy to get back into the world of Emily Wilde. This has it all, Fae, a Fairy King, ambitious women, and the wonderful writing of heather Fawcett.
This is the perfect companion for a cold winter's day.
Love this grumpy sunshine with faeries. Who doesn’t love fairies? I actually loved this more than the first book. Fun, great banter, lovable new characters.
I adore this series even more with each passing day. Heather paints such intricate and vivid landscapes, describes fantastical creatures that could easily be around every corner, and has the best grumpy/sunshine duo series I have read to date. It gave me such a huge book hangover that I’m scourging to find something like it, but this is so cute, cozy, and whimsical that nothing can compare.
Heather Fawcett gives our beloved characters such realistic voices that I sometimes I must remind myself that this is just a story. And having the prose written like a journal really adds to this and helps give Emily such a distinct voice. I absolutely love with the writing style with footnotes within entries (Which is such an Emily thing and Wendell even cracks a joke about this and I was reeling over the comment for several minutes), I truly believe that she is out there somewhere still writing in that journal. It just feels so realistic and that’s just how talented Heather Fawcett’s is.
This book has the adventure of finding Wendell’s magic door, with several side quests thrown in because we all know Emily has a knack of finding herself in the middle of those things because of course she wouldn’t be left behind right despite the danger, right? Theres a mysterious woman running through misty woods at night; I’m going to follow her! Poor Wendell has his hands full for sure. Even though Emily can navigate the world of faeries better than anyone, her interaction to the world is still a little “off”, but she tries to hard that she just captures my heart and pulls on the heart strings. Her experiences in this one is a little better than in the pervious book. She learned from some of the mistakes she made in Hrafnsvik (like the star scholar she is) but I also feel like having Wendell by her side and her Neice really help her navigate social interaction; even though she continues to doubt herself in that aspect of her life.
Now Wendell…is still Wendell and I love him, he’s the best compliment to Emily I could ever wish for. He is still his “lazy”, cheery, and charming self. And his obsession with cleanliness is now what I immediately associate with him and if he doesn’t come into a room complaining about the filth, I’d think something is seriously wrong with him. It’s also coupled with some of the best dialogue in the book.
He is still very attentive and patient with Emily which was what I loved about him in the first book, maybe even more so with the marriage proposal still unanswered, but you can 100% clearly see in this one that Wendell does indeed love her. In the first book the romance seemed clunky and odd at times, but I believe that is because Emily writing it, and she doesn’t 100% understand or grasp the little things and thus never talks about it. She writes it down if she finds it relevant, which wasn’t much other than her work. In this one she is very aware of her feelings and thus writes more about it so we can see it more clearly. Again, a fantastic way to show Emily’s growth.
100% recommended this book to everyone who enjoys the academic rivals to friends to lovers, quirky female lead, and a golden retriever male lead with some murderous energy.
Honorary shout out to our boy Poe! The faerie friend we all need!
In this second book in the series, Emily is back and on another academic trip which turns into quite an adventure.
Together with Wendell, dethroned faerie king and colleague, she is joined by Dr. Farris Rose the head of their department as well as her niece, Ariadne on their trip to the Austrian Alps.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first. Emily's personality still shines through, and she seems to have learned a few things that make her an ever stronger lead. The story has lots of twists and turns and Emily needs to protect Wendell from a poison he has ingested as well as attackers sent by his mother who is determined to kill him. As the urgency to find the door to Wendell's home increases, Emily must unravel clues and rely on the help of others.
I am really looking forward to seeing what happens next in the series. I love the world that the author has created.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. This is my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Heather Fawcett for a digital ARC.
A cozy academia style fantasy with whimsy and adventure.
This story follows Wendell and Emily on a mission to the Austrian Alps, in search of a door to his realm. All while dealing with a looming threat, dangerous fae and get own conflicting emotions.
Once again the world building is so amazing. I also really enjoy the journal style of these books. If you read the first this sequel is a must.
I enjoyed this, but didn’t feel as charmed as I was by the first one. I loved seeing the development of Emily and Wendell’s relationship and I particularly liked the last third of the book. One qualm I have is that I feel like the character development wasn’t as strong in this book as the first one, and sometimes I found Emily to be colder than necessary toward her niece. I’m excited for the third book based on the ending of this one!
