After the events last Winter and the publishing of her encyclopedia, Emily Wilde has set a new goal of creating the first Map of the Folk. Her plans are progressing well until the poisoning at Wendell's birthday party leaves her sometimes love with far more than a hangover. After a public attack from Wendell's step-mother, Emily is forced to embark on a quest for his elusive door. Will they find it this time?
This second installment was such fun! Fantastical new creatures and realms to discover...what's not to love? The dynamic between Wendell and Emily is just so sweet and exciting. The additions to their expedition are just delightful. Highly Recommended for fans of cozy academia with a dash of magic.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this e ARC. The opinions are entirely my own.
Thank you NetGalley and DelRay for the ARC! Heather Fawcett's Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands returns us to the world of scholar Emily Wilde. She is still as interested in the secrets of the Hidden Ones as ever, even after the trials she faced in the previous book. Here, Wendell Bambleby, her fellow scholar, former rival, and Faery Royalty, is being pursued by assassins sent by his stepmother (mostly due to his proposal to Emily). When things take a turn for the worst, Emily, Wendell and a few others, set off to research the disappearance of a missing scholar and discover whether she was able to find the nexus to the faery realm, so that they might be able to enter Wendell's homeland. This volume is full of action, information, relationships, and romance, and is sure to please fans of Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries.
Loved it. Truly a cozy adventure, mystery, romance all rolled into one delightful tale. In Map of the Otherworlds, we find Emily and Wendell fighting off royal assassins who have been sent to eliminate Wendell as a threat to his step-mother's throne in his fairy realm. To confront Wendell's step-mother, they set off from Cambridge in search of the nexus, a door to all the fairy realms. This time with two new companions in tow, Ariadne, Emily's assistant and niece, along with Dr. Rose, the head of the dryadology department at Cambridge. Along the way, Emily starts having visions and conversations with a strange man covered in ribbons and his ties to the 50-year-old mystery of a lost researcher could be the key they need to locating the elusive nexus. With animal and fairy friends to help them on their way, the group faces life and death challenges that only the fairy realm could conjure. We also see Emily's relationship with not only Wendell, but with her niece and colleague, develop as well. Emily's bravery, self-confidence, and know-how get her into another sticky situation in fairy, but she uses her brains and knowledge to work out a plan. I love Emily and Wendell and their growing family of magical creatures so much and I could read their adventures forever. I don't know how many Fawcett is slated to write, but I hope its a lot. #netgalley
i love wendell and emily’s banter, it makes me laugh every single time. i do wish he wrote in emily’s journal more, i just love him. i think this was a solid sequel! we continued the storyline after the first book and it wasn’t too random and i love the new characters that were introduced in the book and that we got to see more of emily’s personality especially when it came to her niece!
ALSO i wish there was more romance in the book even though i know that’s not the point of the book, i just love them together so much😭
I’m not personally a huge fan of Bambleby so there’s that. He’s very much a swoop in and save you at the last minute kind of guy and this is only made worse by the predicament he’s gotten himself into in this book.
Emily has shown some growth since the first book - while she is still too trusting of the fae, she at least recognizes that she is occasionally.
Not my cup of tea but it was a good read and I’ll recommend it to readers who liked the first or who want fae mischief with a side of happily ever after.
I received an eARC of this book for review from the Random House Publishing Group – Ballantine via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.
• The Brief: This is second book of the Emily Wilde Series, and is up to the standards of the first installment. Anyone who enjoyed the relationships, dangerous fae, and intriguing world from book one should prioritize reading book two.
• Emily is off on another adventure with Bambleby… but this time the stakes are higher than academic research and prestige. Unfortunately, Bambleby is distracted (and distracting) and the troop includes two new members. Still, Emily is as single-minded and proficient as ever, even if she doesn’t know how to answer that question.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The new characters are lovely and Ariadne adds a great deal to Emily’s character growth. The Fae continue to be thoughtlessly dangerous, the characters are in character, and the plot is tight and engaging. I am so excited for the finale!
I seriously can't get enough of these characters and this world! The banter between the main characters is top tier and these books give me such cozy vibes while not being completely low stakes. Even though Emily *sometimes* drives me crazy I still aspire to be her when I grow up. If you read the first one you definitely need to pick this one up, you won't be disappointed!
A continuation of what is personally one of my favorite fantasy series of all time, Emily Wilde is back for another adventure 😍 I’m not going to delve too deeply into what this book is about in order to avoid spoilers for the first book but let me tell you, it is BETTER than the first book which I didn’t think was possible.
A gorgeous and fun adventure filled with academia and a little bit of magic, Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands will transport you to a world so unlike our own in the best way. Perfect for the winter season, this book will have you curled up with a hot drink prepared to follow this group of misfits anywhere 🥰
Heather Fawcett has written a wonderful sequel in Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands. This Sequel does require that the reader have gotten to read the first book in it's world as it does not work well on its own. Fans of book one and of fairy stories in general will have a great time with this title.
A perfect book.
I was so excited to this sequel since Emily Wilder’s Encyclopedia of Faeries was one of my favorite reads earlier this year. Map of the Otherlands was even better, It had more adventure and a faster pace.
We get introduced to some new characters that bring more depth to the story while still centering the relationship between Emily and Wendell. We learn so much more about Wendell and his realm and about Emily and her family.
I really enjoyed the nature of the Fae in this world, if you like the Fae in Holly Black’s the Folk of the Air Series this series if for you. They really are ruthless.
I can not wait until I have a physical copy of this book as well as the audio book. I look forward to listening as I expect it will be as good as the first.
Thank you to Del Rey & NetGalley for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This charming sequel brings back all of the favorite elements from book one while still taking us on a new adventure. It balances the darker Faerie elements with whimsy and atmosphere that keeps you hooked. I also found the romance endearing, and the banter was excellent. There were moments here and there that felt a little slower, but I think that’s naturally a feature of both diary-style books and cozy books, and this one is both of those things.
Thanks to Netgalley and Del Rey for the ARC! All opinions are my own.
I LOVE this series. I so enjoyed visiting with Emily again and I just adore the footnotes.
Many thanks to Random House and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Things I loved:
-An older FMC
-A cozy fantasy world
-meaningful connections between Emily and Wendell, and the other people in their lives
-academic vibes
-plots twists that keep you on your toes
-slow burn (my favorite!)
Heather Fawcett executed a wonderful sequel with this book. Her writing is beautiful, her world-building is top-notch, and her plot is exciting, yet comforting at the same time. It's a fairy-tale for grown-ups, and you end up just feeling so happy that you've read the book.
4.5 stars for me,
I want to thank Random House and Del Rey for the arc.
You know when you read something and it becomes your whole personality? This is it, that is this book! Now I have to wait 2 years for book 3, what am I to do????? I can’t even draw to draw them!!!!
Basically started reading and could not put it down and burned my breakfast in the process so you know a book is fantastic when you let your food burn.
The relationships between Emily and her fellow companions. The expansion of the world and the descriptions of the creatures. Emily and Wendell?? Absolute perfection. I can’t wait for more!
10/5 stars
I really enjoyed this! It has that cozy mystery fantasy feel, just like the first and still held onto the journal entry style that I love. It is more personal to Emily and I really felt like that’s what gave the 2nd book a more special place on my shelf. Enjoyed all the new secondary characters and I hope to see more of that in books to come
This is a good follow up the first book. It’s a good cozy slow burn. I enjoyed the FMC view point and all the adventures she went on.
This was such a good story. I recently read the first book & fell in love with this world and was so excited when I got approved for this arc. This book made me feel all the warm & fuzzies. I can’t wait to see what she does next
I floated through this read. I believe I may like it over the first, which I loved. Appreciate the lighthearted, but fun read that can be read in one sitting. I love the aesthetic of old world fairy tale meets modern day. Thanks for letting me read!
A fantastic follow-up to Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries. The adventure is compelling, Emily and Wendell are still very much Emily and Wendell, and the supporting characters feel well-rounded and genuine.
Thank you to NetGalley for early access in return for an honest review!
I would put this at a 3.5 I think, which is lower than I have the first book for one very glaring reason, Emily’s lack of character development. In this sequel we follow her and Wendell on another journey of faeries, doors, scholarly pursuit, and close calls. When assassins are sent by Wendell’s stepmother, it becomes clear they have to find a way to his home realm quickly to take back his kingdom. They embark on this trip with the odious head of the department as well as Emily’s own niece, who is a student at Cambridge and fills the role as Emily’s assistant. Right away we see Emily being cold and rude to her niece, Ariadne, who is as eager to learn as Emily herself and is infinitely helpful.
After the first book, Emily made a couple of female friends in the village she keeps in touch with and truly loves, so I had hoped she would have learned a little bit about kindness and friendship, however the majority of the book Emily does nothing but complain about her niece. She only seems to care about her dog, her faerie friend Poe, and sometimes Wendell. I understand part of her characterization is a lack of understanding of l feelings, but the end of the first book made me think maybe she would have developed a little bit at least in that regard. No such luck.
The parts that had run-ins with the faeries were very entertaining. We meet new species with new motives, and while the “battles” are finished quite easily and the foes vanquished without really any consequences, the world is still interesting to read. I think this is set up for a third, and it sounds like it will take place entirely in Faerie! I hope her character will finally be developed, as at the end she had thawed towards her niece and was even seen embracing Wendell in public.
