Emily Wildes' second adventure picks up only a few months after book 1 ends. Emily and Wendell have returned to Cambridge and academic life, but Emily is still not sure about their relationship. Her interest in finding a secret door to Wendell's fae Kingdom becomes more urgent after he is attacked and poisoned. Their research takes them to a small village in the alps this time, but Wendell's life may now rest on Emily finding her answers in time.

I adored this second installment more than the first. It was nice be with these characters again and I found Wendell far more endearing this time than the insufferable side of him we see in Encyclopedia. Fawcett also introduces us to Emily's niece, an up and coming scholar in her own right, and her department head, an older eccentric scholar who has reason to resent both her and Wendell. The dynamic between all 4 characters is delightful and adds to the pull of the story.

I wouldn't call this series "cozy" because there are very high stakes and some of the fae are truly dangerous and awful, But the vibe is still atmospheric and takes its time to include cozy moments that make the story so endearing. And of course, as an academic, I enjoyed the way academia is represented as both important and ridiculous, because indeed it is both. Bravo! I will look forward to more adventures from Emily and Wendell.

Many thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for providing access to and eARC in echange for am honest review.

I enjoyed this book as much as the first in the series! I love Emily, Wendall, and the original crew as well as new additions like the fox fairies. The only complaint I have is that the village here wasn’t as engaging as the one in the first book.

I devoured Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries and was estastic when I was chosen to read an ARC copy of Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands, the anticipated sequel from Heather Fawcett! Thank you so much to NetGalley, the Random House publishing group, and especially to Heather Fawcett for this opportunity. Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands will be published on January 16, 2024. My reviews will be found on Goodreads and Amazon.

From the moment you open the gorgeous soft covers of the Emily Wilde books, you are transported into the world of academics and the alluring Faerie realms. You will have no wish to leave and will have every want to learn more!

If you have not already read the first installment of the Emily Wilde series, than you are missing out on an exceptional read! Map of the Otherlands did not disappoint and if anything exceeded all of my expectations! You will want to add this sequel to your read list! I honestly can't decide which book is my favorite as I enjoyed them equally as much!

I felt I was on another adventure with Emily and Wendell, but this time we are in the mountains and on the hunt for Wendell's door while solving the mystery of two scholars who went missing in the same area. I liked the return of the character Poe, a woodland brownie who takes great pride in taking care of his tree and being helpful. I found the deceitful, quirky fox fae, Snowbell to be a nice addition to the story as well. I loved in the Map of the Otherlands, we saw more insight into Emily and Wendell's blossoming relationship. Emily's point of view was less scholarly and more personal; we saw more of her depth.

Overall, I enjoy Fawcett's journal writing style! The footnotes are informative and add a nice touch to the story. The journal format adds much to the imagination of the reader and aids in providing the perspective of a strong female protangonist. My only complaint, if it could be called that, is I wanted more of Wendell! However, I do feel if there is a third installment in the series, I will be seeing plenty more of him!

I am praying I will see more from Fawcett and this wonderful world of Emily Wilde she has created! The less the wait, the better! My wish now is that I could read both books as if it were the first time! I aplore you to savor every word and every page because when you are done, you will just want more!

I was so happy to revisit these characters! If you’re looking for a quick, cozy faerie story with academic vibes (and no spice) - this is the series for you!

Heather does such an amazing job building this world; I don’t know if I’ve read anything else about faeries that’s THIS detailed and imaginative. And her depiction of faeries is what I grew up on: they’re scary and not to be trusted!

I struggled with a few things in both books, that I couldn’t really put my finger on until finishing the second one:

- I find my mind wandering a lot while reading, and I think it’s just the more academic, journaling style of these novels. I found myself having to go back and reread pages.

- Both books in the series have been a long, slow burn, which isn’t necessarily a BAD thing… but I always feel the endings are a little rushed after such a long burn to get to the climax.

It is very rare that I enjoy a sequel more than the first book, especially when it is the second in a series/trilogy (the second books tend to fall flat plot wise and meander around until they can hint at the plot climax in book 3). But wow did this book not disappoint!

The journal entries style is growing on me (thank goodness there weren’t as many footnotes this time!) as these entries felt a lot more personal than the first book. I am enamoured of all the new characters, especially Ariadne! She was so relatable because I also hero-worship and wish to follow Emily around! I am so happy Poe returned, but also Snowball was so much fun (if a little more bloodthirsty than I was expecting). For seeing herself as rather grouchy and introverted, Emily has a way of making friends with the least likely people!

The romance—the one thing I wanted more of in book one— was plentiful in book two! I was so happy as they grew closer. It even led to the best twist of the plot- where, against the trope of the knight in shining armor rescuing the damsel in distress, Emily actually got to save Wendell this time!

I also enjoyed getting more of Wendell’s backstory and family. And we finally got to meet the wicked Stepmother (go Em!). His realm sounded incredible, full of all the creatures and plants and magic that we expect when we picture Faerie. I was particularly enamoured with the nexus and it’s colorful doorknobs (reminded me of the magical door in Howl’s Moving Castle!).

I was happy where it ended, even if it left me wanting more (this is quite familair to me after finishing the first book, but alas I will have to wait longer than a week for the third).

Just when I thought a human couldn't possible think of even more wonderous things, Heather Fawcett comes around with book two of her Emily Wilde series, proving, to me at least, that she cannot possibly be human but must be a Fae herself.
Map of the Otherlands is freshly imaginative and reads in such a present way that it feels real. It brings childhood fairy circles back to life in a very grown up, beautiful, and adventurous way.
I am thrilled for the next installment!

It's hard to say if I loved this book more than the first one or if it only felt like I did because this time I already knew I loved the characters and the writing and the vibes, so this just felt like "yay, more content!" Either way, though, this certainly did not fall short.

Everything I loved in the first book was present in this one. Emily and Wendell's relationship progression was particularly lovely. I absolutely adore them, and I will never get tired of him so openly obsessed with her and how amazing she is. I can relate, because I also think she's that great. She's just such a good character, and I liked seeing her get to be just a little feral in a deeply nerdy way.

I don't know if literally anyone will be as excited as I was, but a subplot emerges in this one that the footnotes of the first book made me hope for more glimpses of. The fact that we actually did made me perhaps unreasonably excited, but I'm still not convinced Heather Fawcett didn't do it for me personally.

While the first book certainly good stand alone, I am beyond glad it doesn't have to. This book is exactly what a second book should be--it extends the character arcs in a way that feels natural, with enough of its own story to be satisfying but still a clear direction for the next book to take (and a few little cameos from the first book to make me smile). These books are just so lovely, and I would probably read a million of them if I could.

Wow, wow, WOW!!! I loved this one more than the first, if that is even possible. I love being inside Emily's mind. She is delightful and brilliant. I loved the mystery aspect of this book, too. It had all the same cozy vibes of the first one. I am obsessed with the new Folk we got to meet, I hope we get to see more of them. I was also so happy to see Poe return.

I am forever in love with the banter between Emily and Wendell. They are one of my favorite couples, even if there isn't a lot of romantic moments between them.

Overall, I loved this book. I love this story and I can't wait to reread it again.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC and opportunity to read and review Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands.

More Emily, Wendell, and Shadow YEA PLEASE. More learning about certain people and their backgrounds and learning about certain worlds?? Heck yeah. Everything else I want to say is a spoiler but I’m telling you to read this book especially if you have read book 1 because this just enhances the journey. I just need you to know that this book is magical and the story is outstanding. I cannot wait to read more in this world and I hope I get to do so very soon.

Fawcett once again lures readers into Emily Wilde's fantastical world filled with treacherous fae, ferocious fauns, and long lost scholars.

Emily continues her quest to help Wendell, an exiled Fae King, find the door to his kingdom. With her eager assistant niece and a scholarly rival in tow, the group makes their way to the Alps. Here, the boundaries of the Otherlands are thin, easily snatching up whomever wander off to far.

If searching this maze of doors wasn't difficult enough, danger is hot on Wendell's heels. After a disastrous birthday and with an ever present supply of assassins sent by his stepmother, our Fae King is in trouble. And Emily still hasn't answered his proposal...

I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel, just as much as the original. The new characters are a delightful addition, and I love seeing Emily and Wendell's relationship blossom. An absolutely delightful sequel. I adored it.

I really wanted to like this series. After reading book 1 and being bored to tears, I forced myself to read book 2. The last thing I wanted was to DNF a book on NetGalley. I'm sure this is the point since the main character is a researcher, but I felt like the entire time I was reading a school textbook. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who love the series, but it was just not for me.

I loved this book. I gave it 4.5 stars. It was almost perfect. I liked this one more than the first one which I also really liked. I love that this one had a little more action than the first which was more world-building which makes sense since it was the first one in the early 1900s world.

This book still reads like a cozy fantasy/mystery but it has more action, which came sooner in the book. This absolutely kept me hooked on this book. I loved how it showed more insight into Emily and Wendel's relationship as well as her relationship with her niece, hope to see more of this in future books.

The setting especially towards the end of the book made me feel like I was there. Can't wait to read the next one.

This book is expected to be published on 1/26/2024. I received this ARC for free from Netgalley.

A fun return to the world of Emily Wilde. Like the first installment, it's a cozy adventure with a dash of romance and witty humor. A perfect winter read.

Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I adored Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries and was so excited for the opportunity to read the sequel. It did not disappoint. The story picks up with Wendell, Emily, her niece Ariadne, and her mentor beginning their search for Wendell's door. I loved the addition of Ariadne as well as her mentor. We see Emily grow as a person as she navigates new relationships. The relationship between her and Wendell is so well done. She is matter of fact and goal oriented and he is personable and full of folly, yet their loyalty and friendship to each other is what makes the pairing work.

The storyline was engaging, the banter between the characters was on par, and I think it was overall better than the first book. I enjoy the journal format as well as when Wendell pipes in. I think this one was easier to read and more enjoyable because the first book did have to set up the storyline more so than this one. This one got right to the heart of finding Wendell's door as well as the mystery behind De Grey. It felt like more action and less world/story building.

Hopefully, Heather Fawcett has some more adventures for Emily and Wendell lined up, because they will be a must read for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Del Rey for an eARC of Emily Wildes Map of the Otherlands!

We pick up shortly after we left off in Emily Wildes Encyclopaedia of Fairies with our main couple Emily and the ever so charming Wendell. I absolutely adored this book just as much as I did the first one! Academia, adventure, and the delightful banter between Emily and Wendell- you will have so much fun reading this one! I hope we get to read more and more adventures with these two wonderful characters.

An absolutely delightful second entry into Emily Wilde's world and her relationship with the fae. There is something here to keep people who aren't invested in romance thoroughly captivated while leaving those who are completely smitten with the relationship between Emily and Wendell. I adore this series and can't wait to see where their next adventure leads them.

I truly felt honored to receive an ARC of this book and despite this, I went into my reading of it with low expectations.

Cozy fantasy is not a genre I consider myself well versed in, as the first book in this series was admittedly my first attempt at reading a book like it. I adored it and moved on to the sequel not sure how we could develop on a world that was relatively low stakes.

I am happy to be proved wrong! Ms. Fawcett does this style of book flawlessly, I would read ten more installments in this series. It breaks my heart that the ending is fairly tied up, because I anticipate re reading this over and over until I can fill the void this is leaving with something similar.

The dynamic we explore in this sequel between Emily and Wendell is glorious. It’s tension filled and cheeky and your heart is on the verge of exploding with the fluffiness of it all. Like many other reviews mention, it’s grumpy x sunshine to the max. Emily documents her grumpiness amazingly in her journal entries and Wendell is the embodiment of a golden retriever puppy.

The addition of Ariadne was excellent. Emily has to face some aspects of her personality that are not likable and push people away. She takes a while to start wanting a relationship with her niece that is beyond surface level and despite the fact I think we could have seen the resolution to this sooner, it did suit Emily’s character well.

There’s nothing more to say. It has to be five stars. I will be thinking about how happy this makes me for a very long time.

Thank you Del Ray and Netgalley for the ARC! It did not affect my review but it was an amazing experience!

I really loved this! It was an excellent continuation of Emily's story, and built so much of the fantasy world out in a way that felt interesting and fast-paced. I also love where Emily and Wendell's love story is going -- Heather Fawcett could write 50 Emily Wilde books and I would simply say "more, please."

I don't know if I loved this quite as much as the first book, maybe because some of the novelty is gone, maybe because the setting is a little less wintery cozy in the second book. But, overall, I had a blast. I will definitely be reading more from Heather Fawcett and recommending this book.

I enjoyed Map of the Otherlands far more than the first book! While it was a great book, this one was spectacular! I am so grateful to Net Galley, Random House, and Heather Fawcett for sharing an uncorrected proof with me. I don’t think I would have been able to wait until January for this!

This was an easier read compared to the first, as we don’t have much development to be done and we know what the plot is going in. I do understand the Irish story at the end of book 1, but still uphold that it should have been done differently. Book 2 gives us everything we didn’t get from the first: more romance, expanded relationships of Emily and Wendell ie family and colleagues, and more of the faerie world and different Folk.

Snowbell was an oddly cute little demon for this tale’s chosen common fae. His unassuming form pictured on the cover.

So many questions about Wendell and his kingdom answered!

We also get more on De Grey and Eichorn. Which I’m thankful was covered because I’ve found in other academias, this is something that would have been glazed over instead of explored. I would have gone mad! So thank you Heather Fawcett for turning over this stone!

The villagers we meet in St. Liesl are quite different compared to those of Ljosland, and for a very good reason!

Though book 2 has a similar formula to book 1, it is absolutely different. Emily’s motives have changed and she is starting to blur the lines of scholarship and emotion. I found that her character development here was drastic and for the best. I know I will be impatiently waiting for book 3!

Once published and I am able to read a final copy, I will make additions to my review.

I struggled quite a bit to get through the first half of this book. It had moments where I was really interested, then moments where I really lost interest. This one for me was not quite as good as the first book. It still had that fun, whimsical element and I love the footnotes throughout. It did pick up a little at the end but I just wanted more from the two main characters. Without giving away anything, I wanted more drama and more passion. Overall I had a good time with this and would read more books from this author.

I just reviewed Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett. #EmilyWildesMapoftheOtherlands #NetGalley
