I absolutely love this series. Emily Wilde and Wendell Bambleby are one of my most favorite couples/main characters. I fell in them with them both in Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries. In this second installment, Emily is focused on finding Wendell’s door to his kingdom. It is fraught with assassins, lost dryadologists, and of course, the Faerie realm. I cannot wait for the series to continue and learn more about Wendell’s kingdom. Their banter is still top notch, and there a few new characters I have equally fallen in love with, such as Ariadne, Emily’s niece and new assistant.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Del Rey and imprint of Penguin Random House, for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved the first Emily Wilde book and this was even better!! The addition of Emily's niece added an entirely new dimension to the story, I still love Wendell, he's an amazing character. This book was a delightful cozy mystery and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fun, fae filled reads. My full review will be on goodreads and instagram at the time of the books release
𓍊𓋼𓍊 ARC Review: Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands 𓍊𓋼𓍊
Rating: ✨4/5✨
Spice: 🌶 - fade to black
Tropes: forced proximity, friends to lovers, grumpy x sunshine,
➴➵➶➴➵ This book was better than book 1 (see review on my profile). I liked this one more for a few reasons. Emily was an actual person, Wendell was explained a bit more, and the plot moved better (but slow).
ꕥ I don't mean this to be rude, but in the first book it was almost impossible to like Emily. Now we see a little bit more behind the curtain. She acknowledges her behavior and I think that's all I needed. ☺️
ꕥ I want more of Wendell in book 3. I want to understand him through his own lense rather than Emily's POV or his one journal entry. I will say his illness being the driving force of the plot was a great choice. It made me feel for him and be more sympathetic to Emily and see how much she really does care. The whole proposal thing was quite drawn out though. I'm glad that he didn't magically get better though and Emily still had to be a bad*as. 🍷
ꕥ I love Poe and Shadow as side characters and the new addition of Snowbell. But if Shadow being old is mentioned ONE MORE TIME. 🙅🏻♀️ You better not be setting up for anything, Heather. 🤬
ꕥ I will say, the plot is still slow and so is the romance. I was hoping for a little bit more to be shown, not the OG fade to black, but alas I am disappointed there. I guess Emily isn't the type to journal her intimate life, but wish there was a smidge more. I'm not even talking rated R. More like PG-13.
ꕥ Oh yeah!💡The footnotes were much better included within the ebook this time. I'm glad I didn't have to wait until the end of each chapter like book 1.
➴➵➶➴➵ Anyway, I'm excited for book 3. And thank you to Netgalley and Del Ray for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for an e-arc to read, rate, and review.
I was so excited to get a copy of this as soon as I finished the previous book, Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries. This sequel certainly didn't disappoint! The merry cast, and some new persons, goes off on another jaunt to solve more mysteries, and a previous beloved character even makes an appearance that left me overjoyed! There is action from the get go and the writing style continues in a personal journalistic manner that is quite intriguing and cozy. Brilliant story, and I can't wait to read more.
Since Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries has secured a spot on my list of favorite reads of this year, I was over the moon to get access to an early peek at the second installment of her adventures - and I’m happy to report that it was every bit as delightful as the first!
Now that Emily has published her encyclopaedia of faeries, she has taken on an ambitious new project to create a map of the land of Faerie and the doors to get there from the human realm. Not only is Emily trying to map out Faerie for her own academic desires, but her relationship with fellow professor Wendell Bambleby means that their adventure has taken on a more personal goal as well. We follow Emily’s journal entries in her unique and unmistakable voice as she embarks on her new mission with Wendell by her side from the very beginning. We are treated to all of the chemistry and amusing banter between Emily and Wendell from the start, and we’re also treated to some great side characters, both new and old, that help to move the plot forward and make the story hard to put down.
One of my favorite aspects of the Emily Wilde series is how Heather Fawcett is able to just completely immerse the reader in the world of her characters. Her writing is so atmospheric and has such a strong sense of place that within just a few sentences, I feel like I’m right there beside them in the land of Faerie. For such a cozy fantasy of a story, the character development is spot-on. The dynamic between Emily and Wendell is so much fun to watch, and Emily’s relationships to the other characters are all true to her personality as well. The interactions between Emily and the others, especially Wendell, had me giggling the whole way through. In terms of the side characters though, I didn’t particularly love the addition of Ariadne in this one, as it just felt a little forced or unnecessary for this adventure, however I can also see how it could be a necessary step for wherever the series goes next. Emily’s voice as the narrator is another one of my favorite parts of this series, and I definitely look forward to hearing more from her in the future! I really enjoyed that the ending of this story was satisfying enough on its own to close out this chapter of Emily and Wendell’s tale, but also obviously leaves the door open for the next one in the series.
All in all, Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands was super cozy, fantastical, charming, funny, imaginative, and heartwarming. It’s a go-to happy place for me, and Heather Fawcett has absolutely become an auto-buy author. Thank you so much to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Emily and Wendell have easily become two of my favourite characters and two characters I could go on several adventures with and never get tired. Book 1 was beautiful, it was imaginative and magical, and nothing short of what I wanted in a book. But book 2 was even better, and I’ve always had higher expectations for book 2. I adored this sequel so unbelievably much. I had so much fun getting into these characters POVs again. It was so cozy and the mystery’s that unravel in this book are SO good. The new cast of characters that were introduced added depth to what we already can say is an incredible sequel. I dont want to give too much away since it is the sequel, but if you love two scholars who see each other as competition, if you love a Howl Penndragon type love interest and fairies this is the book and series for you.
ARC Review. Thank you so much to Heather Fawcett, Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine, Del Rey, and NetGalley for this eARC. All opinions are my own.
Heather Fawcett’s writing is its own kind of magic. Like Wendell’s enchanted garments, her words wrap themselves around you and prepare you for a charming adventure.
Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands picks up where the first book left off. Wendell and Emily have returned to teaching at Cambridge after their latest adventure in Hrafnsvik. However, life as they know it is quickly disturbed by multiple assassination attempts on Wendell’s life (on his birthday no less). Emily quickly realizes that the only way to save Wendell is to locate the elusive fairy door to his realm. Wendell, Emily, and two new characters, Ariadne and Dr. Ferris Rose, set off to the picturesque Austrian Alps to do just that. While there, the group meets a new cast of charming villagers, mischievous fairies, and attempts to solve mysterious goings-on as they work toward their ultimate goal of preserving Wendell. Will Emily be able to work through the tangles of Faerie and her own heart before it’s too late for Dr. Bambleby?
I loved this book. Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands is charismatic, delightful, and so cozy. It was such a pleasure to revisit Emily, Shadow, Wendell, and their work in Dryadology. I absolutely enjoyed traipsing through the Austrian Alps with Emily and the gang looking for fairy doors and meeting new Folk along the way. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a few favorite characters from the first book make their way onto the pages!
The second installment in the series, more so than the first, challenges Emily to grow in ways that are uncomfortable for her. I appreciated her struggles with matters of the heart, while simultaneously cheering her on as she finally figured out the best way forward for herself. It was also refreshing to see her soften towards the characters around her who clearly cared deeply for her wellbeing. In short, Emily grew up a lot in these pages, and it was a joy to watch it all unfold.
The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, which sets up the third installment in the Emily Wilde series perfectly. I cannot wait to see where Emily’s adventures take us next!
In case you were wondering, I am absolutely planning on purchasing a physical copy of Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands once is it released in January 2024. This series has earned a permanent place on my bookshelves and in my heart. ❤️
If you love a good cozy fantasy, you need to pick up a copy of Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands as soon as it is released. Make sure to start with Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries if you haven’t read it yet!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Ahhh I loved this book. These are just the perfect
Cozy reads. I’m obsessed with Wendell and I can’t wait to learn more about him and his home. I highly recommend this one!
Big thank you to Netgalley and publishers for allowing me the ARC version of this book.
I thought the first book in the Emily Wilde series was outstanding, I had no clue it could even get better. There was not a moment that I did not enjoy in this book. The writing was amazing, the detail of these well crafted realms was on key, watching Emily and Wendell’s relationship grow brought me joy! I cannot wait until the third book!
4.5/ 5 🌟
I adored this book. I would highly recommend it. A lot of sequels don't live up to the originals but this one definitely did.
I loved the continuation of the romance. Emily and Wendell were simply meant for each other. I love how he loves her for who she is and not who she is. And watching Emily battle her feelings for Wendell was very entertaining.
The setting of novel was just as magical as the first one. I loved the new fae we were introduced to. I love Fawcetts' depiction of the fae. They are deceitful and cruel which is more closely aligned with common mythology. Her descriptions of all the different species of fae were so vivid.
I loved the new side characters as well. I felt they helped the story feel more well rounded. They also helped add some levity to a darker story.
A great follow up to the first book! If you loved the first book, you will love this one. It took me a little bit to get into the first book, but not this one. I was hooked from the beginning.
This book is just as delightful as the first book! I love the journal-entry writing style, complete with footnotes. It’s a great way to see into the mind of Emily Wilde. She is such a unique character, I feel that I could read about her for ages!
I loved the addition of new characters and new Folk! The character development is amazing! The plot built up from book one really well, and stayed interesting through the whole story! The imagery and descriptions made this such a cozy read. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
This is probably closer to a 3 but I love Wendell so much I'll keep it at four. I love the whimsy most with these books. Emily as a narrator is always so academic in her approach and I love being in her mind. I loved that our little friend Poe reappeared but I did miss some of the found family from the first book. I was hoping for more from the romance this time. The tension and adoration seemed a bit better in the first one. It wasn't bad though still satisfying. I do think Emily still felt autism coded but very differently this book? I can't describe it. Overall happy to continue the series!
Rep: autism, gay side character
After the first book, I went into reading this one with quite high expectations. Yet each were met every second of the way. Character and setting are always important in this genre. But with the quirky albeit well rounded group of characters place in cozy villages or trudging through wild fantastical lands, I can confirm that this book is the perfect cozy autumnal read.
Thank you netgalley for an early copy!
This book was wonderfully written. The writing style matches the main character and over all super pleasant to read through. The characters are very likable. Emily and Wendell are a remarkable duo. I enjoyed the new characters they introduced and how the personalities of the main characters showed through interaction of the new characters. Rose, Emily's boss was a little hard to like at first but grew on me over time. Ariadne and Emily's relationship was complicated and it was interesting to see their personalities together. I can not forget how amazing Shadow was for helping out throughout the book. Also loved the reaperance of an old character that was in the first book. Overall definitely my favorite fantasy series!
Even better than book 1, this was such a whimsical delight. Big adventure and adorable romance and a pretty bonkers cast.
A high 4 stars. A great time! I really want to spend more time with these characters and in this world!
If you enjoyed the first Emily Wilde, I see no reason why this new entry in the series wouldn’t work for you!
Similarly structured, with some fun new character additions and relationship development among the old familiars! The story takes us to the German Alps, where new troubles await our diary-writing fairy scholar.
I liked this second book even more than the first one. It was funnier and the characters felt less distant! (Also, Wendell and Emily are adorable together!) The book still felt slightly too long, especially in the middle part, but that is really my only complaint.
I can’t wait for the next adventure!

Thank you, NetGalley for allowing me to read Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands e-arc. The opinions written are my own.
If you loved the first book then you will love this continuation with its quirky characters, faeries, cozy fantasy, and academic vibes. I am so glad that we got to explore more into the faerie world. I was hoping for more exploration in world-building and that's precisely what I got. The descriptions of the creatures were just as good as it was in the first book.
If you were hoping to get to know our quirky duo more that's exactly what you will get in this sequel. We get a better understanding of who Emily is in and out of the academic setting. The banter between Emily and Wendell continues. I loved that some supporting characters Ariadne and Rose were added to their story. I felt like they added more banter and insight to our main characters. The slow-burn romance continues in this sequel.
This sequel probably won't draw in more readers but an excellent continuation for the fans of the first book. I did find that the beginning of the book was slow-paced. It took me a little while to get into the story. Once I was I could not put it down.
Overall, I highly recommend picking up book 2 and I can not wait to read book 3 for whenever it comes out.

This book was provided as an advanced reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The second Emily Wilde novel was just as enchanting as the first, following Emily, Wendell, and a cast of new characters (as well as some exciting returns) as they attempt to research a gateway back to Wendell’s realm and save him from a slow-acting poison.
I was worried at first that the magic of the first novel would be self-contained but this sequel works really well as a continuing storyline and I look forward to news of the third book.
I was delighted to read this book, especially after I enjoyed the first book so. The cozy fantasy and adventures of Emily & Wendell continue in a similar manner, and I actually found myself enjoying this book even more than the previous one. Fawcett's journalist style kept me interested as well, it helps keep the book "low stakes" as I know everything must be alright enough for the characters if the entries can continue in some form. I highly recommend Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands if you liked the first book, and I truly cannot wait for book #3 (fingers crossed)!
