A delightful follow up to the first book! I immediately sank into this book - it's a read that just brings me so much joy because it's so quirky, matter-of-fact, cozy, and delightful! The characters are established now, which made it really fun to see how Emily and Wendell banter, develop their relationship, and move forward with their adventures. I'm looking forward to the next in the series!
Received a free copy from Netgalley.
Great witty banter
The way it is written out is not necessarily my favorites but I’d u loved the first book you will love this one
4.5 ⭐️
This book started off right after the ending of book 1.
I loved this book so much more than the first one! Don’t get me wrong, I really like Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Fairies but this one just had something.
The pacing in this was perfect.. there’s a lot more action in this book. On top of romance. I absolutely loved the romance with prickly and clever Emily and arrogant and sunshiny Wendell. The banter is still there but there were some special scenes that I just melted and went back to.
We are introduced to some new characters which I thought brought so much more to the story. I was slightly suspicious of one, but turned out I did not have to worry.
We also see and hear of characters from the first book and can I say how much I adored that one character that showed up a lot?
I also laughed a lot while reading this. There was lots of comedy in certain scenarios and I laughed out loud like squealed. 😂
I highly recommend reading this book if you fell in love with the first book!
Is there going to be a third book? I have no idea… it’s possible though this book doesn’t end on a cliff hanger and all my questions are answered so it could end here.
I wouldn’t be mad if we got more though because I absolutely love these characters!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for gifting me this copy for an exchange of an honest review.
Getting an ARC of this book from NetGalley was one of the best things to ever happen to me. I’m so enamored with this series, the characters are wonderful, the story is always fun and so well built. I just love everything about these books, the Emily Wilde series will definitely end up as a favorite of mine. I can’t wait for what’s to come in the next installment Wendell & Emily make me insane!!!!! Thank you so much to NetGalley & the publisher!!
This is the second book that we absolutely needed! Emily and Wendell are back with another fun, educational and crazy adventure.
I loved how easy of a read this was. There is a lot of challenges the main characters face but you never feel the need to sit the book down and step back.
Emily and Wendell's relationship is adorable and kept me laughing the entire way. I also love the new additions to the crew! I will absolutely be recommending this book and planning to read again!
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
The second book in the Emily Wilde series did not disappoint. I actually liked it even more than the first book, which I rated 4.5/5. I’ve heard that sequels can be a challenge to write, but Heather Fawcett’s world and characters are so well-written and well-thought out that it would be impossible for this second book to be anything less than amazing.
In this book Emily and Wendell, as well as two new characters, travel to the Swiss Alps to try to find a secret door to the summerlands of the Faerie world. They also attempt to find two long lost scholars who vanished in the area where they believe the door to be located. This discovery would be extremely important for Emily and would help her prove several Faerie theories as well as allow her to finish her new project, which is a mapbook of Faerie. One of my favorite parts of the story is Emily and Wendell’s growing romance. If they were not already one of my favorite book couples, they definitely are now. I absolutely love their interactions and the way that their opposite personalities mesh. I cannot get enough of them!
The plot of this book was action packed but easy to follow and not at all overwhelming. I mentioned in my review of the first book that the beginning was a little slow and difficult to get into, but this sequel drew me in immediately. The settings were well fleshed out, beautiful to read about, and easy to imagine. I felt like I was on the quest along with the characters and I didn’t want the book to end. I cannot wait for the third one, and this second one isn’t even out until Jan! I will definitely reread this series many times and I cannot recommend it more!
Thank you, NetGalley, for the opportunity to pre-read this book and share my opinions on it.
Even though I enjoyed the first book more than this one, I could never forgive myself if I didn't get it all 5 stars. It's really rare anymore that a book gives me that feeling of a warm light turning on inside when I pick it up, that makes me want to curl up and read at a savoring pace for hours on end with a barely-there smile. This one, just as its predecessor, very much fits that bill.
Emily is such a good main character. She's smart, she's adventurous, she makes friends with cozy little fae (who bake her loaves of delicious buttery bread and are also immensely proud of their decorating skills), she's got a giant soft spot for her dog(-like creature), but she's also grouchy sometimes and has to mask her frustration with people with varying degrees of success (especially when that person is Wendell). That last point above all others makes me identify with her so, so much. Alas, would that it were that I also made friends with bread-baking fae, but what can you do.
Wendell is just a pure delight. There's nothing about him I don't like. His playful energy is the perfect counterbalance to Emily's solemn scholarly personality, and I loooooove that he can bring out that side of her. At the same time, despite him seeming flippant and goofy at times, he is perfectly capable of taking care of business when the need arises. And let's not forget how Emily can bring out his calmer, more tender, more serious side as well. He's such a great character, and I love any scene with the two of them being the cutest book couple of all freaking time.
I think the biggest reason I liked the first book more than I liked this one was that I felt like Rose and Ariadne were slightly disconnected from everything else - I don't really remember feeling at any time that they were absolutely crucial to the story, but at the same time, I didn't mind their presence.
Overall, though, these books are an absolute craving for me. I adore the cozy fae vibes and the idea of a scholar whose field of research is the totally-real world of folklore. I can't get enough of Emily, I can't get enough of Wendell, and I especially can't get enough of Emily-And-Wendell together. Also, a fetch quest that has our main character fetching a cat was just so cute and unexpected, even though the quest itself was wrought with peril. So I'm gonna need more of these books, please, Ms. Fawcett. MORE.
Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands is just as delightful as the first installment! The same level of wit and banter lives in the book with the addition of some great new characters. I liked the mystery of Wendell's affliction in this one and Emily's journey to heal him. I felt like Wendell was the savior in Book 1, much to Emily's chagrin, and in this one she really came into her own and took the lead and did what Wendell could not - in his own realm! I love Emily as a protagonist - her inability to express emotion is fun to watch her work through (and so relatable), as well as her singlemindedness. She's unlike any other FMC I've come across and I find her so endearing.
The writing in this book is so clever and engaging, it's such a cozy and rich world to be in.
Thank you NetGalley for sending me this ARC to review! I loved this so much! Such a treasure. All of the characters are so charming and I loved being inside Emily’s head once again. I loved the first book in the series, but this one was even better! Everyone knows I love anything to do with faeries and this series takes a such a fun approach to them. I wish I could major in Dryadology and take Professor Wilde’s course!
When I saw this second installment available on NetGalley I was thrilled having just finished Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries. This book did not disappoint! I was immediately transported back into Emily's world, with adventure right off the bat. The story was compelling, the new characters interesting and likable, and of course learning more of the fae world was quite the treat. Heather Fawcett knows how to weave a world both known and unknown, and manages to intertwine them masterfully. I thoroughly enjoy Emily's journal entries and opinions, as well as the adventures she finds herself in. Wendell is such a lovable oaf, and it was nice to learn more about his past in this book. It was also lovely to see a few characters from the previous book make their appearances. I will certainly be recommending this duology to anyone that loves a good fantasy!
Oooooh was I happy to get my hands on this! These books are so so satisfying. The unique voice amd even more unique characters are what hook me in. I am pretty sure I would read an infinite number of these adventures. I am blown away by the story telling and by the structure of the book, it is truly unlike anything I’ve bread before. It is addicting and I wanted to do nothing by read this book. I recommend it for fans of the spider wick chronicles who want a good adventure with a grumpy sunshine dynamic, a team of tag tag adventurers and scholars and who want to see a world of the Fae crafted in a unique way.
Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands follows Emily and Wendell on another charmingly chaotic adventure. In this sequel, the two scholars seek a faerie door in the Austrian Alps. This book absolutely did not disappoint delivering the perfect balance of cozy vibes, darker faerie elements, and romance.
The interpersonal relationships between Emily and the other characters in this book really shone in Map of the Otherlands. Emily and Wendell’s relationship was, of course, my favorite part of the story. Their romance became a much more significant element in the plot. We get insight into the depth of their relationship and there are plenty of angsty and fluffy scenes to make you squeal. I particularly loved how Emily was forced to confront her own feelings. Wendell remains my favorite Howl/Cardan coded chaos king. We get to see even more of his “true nature” in this installment and his devotion to Emily remains as strong as ever.
Beyond the romance, it was also interesting to see Emily build relationships with more side characters. Emily—someone who repeatedly reminds the reader that she is not good with people—must learn to navigate family bonds, professional relationships, and friendships in order to accomplish her goals.
The fantasy atmosphere in Map of the Otherlands is both familiar and new. Once again the story is told through lightly academic journal entries—though they are no longer meant to serve as an encyclopedia. With a different location comes a new set of Folk and magical creatures including mischievous fox-like folk that were particularly charming. The faerie doors introduce even more realms to discover. The unfamiliar magic of this land adds wonder and tension to the story.
One of my biggest complaints about Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries was the slow start. Therefore, I was incredibly happy that Map of the Otherlands had a more engaging opening. However, that may also have been because Wendell was in it from the very beginning.
If I wanted to I could poke holes in the story that would lower my rating. It is not a perfect book and readers’ enjoyment will largely depend on their interest in the romance. Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands will not win over readers who disliked the first book. This is a sequel for people who want more; more of Emily, more of Wendell, and more of their romantic tension. The story made me so happy that I simply refuse to rate it lower than five stars.
I don't know if Fawcett plans to write more books in this series. The ending of Map of the Otherlands is complete and yet it leaves doors open (pun intended) for more adventures. I would happily read about more of Emily and Wendell’s scholarly pursuits.
Great read and stellar addition to the series. Fun characters, whimsical writing, and charming narrative. Exciting to read more from this series.
This book follows Professors Emily Wilde and Wendell Bambleby on their quest to find a door into his kingdom (which means that I do encourage the reader to begin with the first novel to have a proper understanding of this one. Don't worry; it is well worth the read.). We begin at Cambridge with a series of unexpected encounters that culminate in a full-blown assassination attempt. From there our two intrepid scholars (okay, one intrepid scholar and one somewhat lazy faerie king) set off for the Alps as Emily has reason to believe the door into Wendell's kingdom will be there. Meanwhile, strange things have been to happen when Wendell uses his magic and Emily realizes this is another problem she will have to solve largely on her own.
New characters Ariadne (Emily's niece) and Dr. Farris Rose (Emily and Wendell's department head) are heavily featured in this novel, much like Aud, Lilja, and Finn were in the last. Both of them are interesting characters that provide additional insight into Emily's psyche. It is particularly compelling to watch Emily's relationship with her niece/assistant grow. Even Wendell remarks on it.
Don't worry. Shadow is a large presence in this book as well and Emily still encounters new faeries to add to her encyclopedia on this journey. She also works a great deal on her new project, a map (hence the title of the book). There are brief mentions of Hrafnsvik, but of the people and faeries there, Emily really only interacts with Poe during this novel. He bakes new breads and we find out secret properties of the gift he gave her at the end of the last book.
One of my favorite parts of these books has been the occasional character who appears only briefly but leaves a large impression. In this one, it is an incensed faerie who pelts Wendell with crockery after he barges into the faerie's home. From the wonderful writing, I could picture it happening and was laughing (okay, giggling) enough that the people around me noticed. I think the faerie's reaction is what everyone secretly wants to do about uninvited and unwelcome guests.
The only reason I did not give the book five stars is that I think it is a focused enough book that I would not recommend it to a reader who does not already like to read books in the fantasy genre. I think the world building aspect would throw them off early in the first novel and they would never make it to the second. There is a continuation of the romance that began in the last book, but all intimacy takes place off-page and Emily is so awkward that the innuendos are very strange indeed. Poor Wendell is rather confused.

Thank you Netgalley and Heather Fawcett for a digital ARC.
Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands is the second book by Heather Fawcett that follows Emily Wilde on her adventure to the Otherlands. After finishing her encyclopaedia on faeries, Emily is off on another adventure with Wendell to deal with a fae threat that also doubles as a research trip for Emily’s new project. We, as the readers, follow them along through Emily’s journal entries.
I really enjoyed the second installment of this series. There was adventure, conflict, growth, a new understanding of fae’s and new friends are made. My absolute favorite character from the first book makes a return, as well as others too. I was really excited to read throwbacks to the first adventure. There were characters that I wanted more from, like Wendell’s brother. But maybe we will learn more in another installment.
I love Emily’s and Wendell’s relationship and I can’t wait for more of them!
One of my new favorite series! In love with Emily & Wendell. Can’t stop thinking about these books! Wonderfully balances romance, adventure, macabre, and whimsy. Hoping for more in this series.
My only qualm was that action scenes seemed a bit glossed over or not as well done as the rest. Such as fighting the fairy hunters, when Emily gets lost in the fog, fighting the fawns, etc. I don’t enjoy those scenes as much. But overall the book is well written.
What a fantastic sequel! I thoroughly enjoyed this. The plot, characters, dialogue, and setting were all wonderfully thought out. I loved learning more about the Fae, Wendell and his family, and him and Emily's budding relationship. The cozy-fantasy vibes that were heavily present in the first book continue here (a fantastic book for winter!). The mystery and the new characters were quite intriguing as well. I only wish we had a bit more detailed writing into the romance element....(fade-to-black if you know what I mean) however as this is told through Emily's POV, I can understand why it's not in there. Needless to say, I am looking forward to book three!
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House-Del Rey for providing me this ARC!
This reads like a cozy historical mystery and of course I mean that in the absolute best way. I love the mix of Fae with an academic setting. This series is an absolute delight! It's so cozy and I love the grumpy X sunshine trope. This story just makes my little heart so happy
SUCH A COZY NOVEL!! It truly had everything I could have asked for. Heather is such a mastermind with their writing and I was truly not let down with this one. Fantasy novels done well can be some of the best books out there and this exceeded expectations.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC. I absolutely enjoyed this more than the first book! The banter, the adventure, the writing-it’s just absolute perfection.
