If you enjoyed the first book, you will love devouring this sequel! Like the first book, this too is written in a journal format with footnotes albeit more personal and less academic pov of Emily compared to the previous book. It also has more action and romance wove into it.
Once again, I was pulled in yet another whimsical world created by Heather Fawcett. Enjoying the wild and fun filled adventure with one of my favorite duos, Emily and Wendell, alongside new characters you'll come to love.
I was delighted for Emily's growth as she is more forthcoming with her feelings and not to always thinking of the scholarly merits her journey will bring. Her dynamic with other people, including Wendell, unfolds organically and beautifully throughout the narrative. The long wait for the next book will be dreadful but so excited to be enchanted and brought back to their world.
I'll might add to this review after the release of the book on January 2024. I fear I might give out too many details If I continue on lol
Thank you to netgalley and Del Rey for the digital arc in exchange for an honest review. Everything in this review has been written willing fully.
*Amazon reviews will be posted after the release of the book. Social media posts will be posted close to or after the release date
I loved the first book—and what comes with that is a trepidation in regards to the second. However, I truly had nothing to fear because I enjoyed this one even more than the first! We get a taste of on-campus academic shenanigans and a deeper glimpse into who Wendell is, all from Emily’s rough-edged perspective (which I’ve always found refreshing). I’m always intrigued by the extent of Emily’s willingness to dive headfirst into Fae (academically and literally speaking). The adventures her determination takes her on always unfolds in magically unnerving ways. Fawcett has a lovely way of alchemizing old fairytales with original lore. You truly never know what’s next!
And as for spice:
In keeping with the tone of its predecessor, the romance is on the back burner set to low.
All in all, this series is beautiful and the second book has only made it better. I reviewed the first book on my TikTok page (dir.england) and I will be reviewing this one soon!
this book has solidified the fact that i will continue to read this series for the rest of my life. i am in love with this format of traveling to a certain destination then going on an adventure. the way this world is set up being magical but not too difficult to follow makes for such a relaxing fantasy read.
also, as long as you remember the gist of book 1, you will be 100% able to read book 2. not having to reread book 1 was incredible, anything that i didn’t quite remember was brought up again in this book and it caught me right back up to speed.
anyway, emily wilde’s map of the otherlands is also set up in a diary format which i’ve come to really enjoy, specifically for this series. we also get to see some progression from emily and wendell’s relationship, which i was really happy to read about. also, we get to learn more about wendell’s home and how the doors work.
the only thing that i think would make these books better is if they had illustrations. like book 1 could have had some cool creature illustrations and this one could have had some landscape illustrations. other than that this was a perfect read.
the way that this book ended makes me super excited for the next one (i really hope there’s going to be a next one).
thank you to netgalley and del rey for an advance readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book! Not to give any spoilers, but I think that this book improved so much upon was was established in the first book, such as the motivations of Emily and Wendell and the world building. I also think that Fawcett's already stellar writing improved this time around, and I that her descriptions of the environment that Emily and Wendell found themselves in was easy for me to imagine and place myself in. I laughed, yelled, and (almost) cried reading this book, and I cannot wait for the 3rd installment.
A wonderful sequel to the first book . I love Emily and bambley so much !
Thank you NetGalley for the arc
I really wish every fae novel was more like the Emily Wilde series. There’s something about the blend of whimsy and academia that I’m so obsessed with.
Map of the Otherlands is an adventure just as exciting as Encyclopedia of Faeries, continuing right from where that story left off. I was afraid it might get formulaic—Emily and Wendell move into a small town, study their Folk, are at first met with wariness but eventually accepted, etc—but I didn’t need to worry, because this built off of the elements of the first story more than copying it. I loved the additions of Ariadne and Rose to the team, as well as all of the new types of Folk and lore we learn about.
The only downside to reading this as an ARC is that now I have to wait even LONGER for the next book. I will be anxiously awaiting it!!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC, it was a joy to read!
Second books in a series where you really loved the first book can be hit or miss. But Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett was just as fun as the first. The characters, old and new, are delightful, the faeries are equally charming and scary, and the plot moves at a steady pace. If you’re into cozy fantasy, I would feel no qualms going into this series. I look forward to the third book in this series. Cozy fantasy is a new favorite sub-genre.
I received this ARC from NetGalley for a fair and honest review.
I liked Map of the Otherlands much more than Encyclopedia!
You get a better feel for the characters, especially Emily.
The pacing is also better. I never felt the story drag on at any point and it was easy to read and follow.
I do enjoy the author's writing style especially whentold in Emily's more cynical tone.
With the mystery surrounding what's going on with Wendell and the dangerous Fae they encounter plus visits from old friends in the first book, I was recaptured from the first page.
I do wish both books gave us previews into Emily's books like sketches of Faeries or the Maps. I think it would be a very Immersive read.
Overall I highly enjoyed it and I'm bummed there are only two books in the series. 10/10 highly recommend!
Big thanks to Heather Fawcett and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for writing and publishing this book and making it available via NetGalley. I received a free digital arc and am leaving this review of my own volition.
This is a sequel to Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries. It's a historical fantasy about the adventures of a curmudgeonly scholar. It is fun, smart, romantic, adventurous and has a dry sense of humor I love. The first was one of my favorite books that I read in 2022 and the sequel is now one of my favorites of this year, so far. I enjoyed the new characters added to the series, especially Rose and Ariadne. I highly recommend it. I even stretched out my reading experience because I didn't want it to end.
I really hope there will be at least one more entry in the series, but if there is not, the books are satisfying on their own. I highly recommend it.
I absolutely ADORED this book! Emily Wilde book one was already a top read of 2023, and book two has gone and surpassed it. The story was whimsical, emotional, and cozy, while still being steeped in eeriness and unease at times.
Emily and Wendell were both totally lovable and the pining was to die for. There were some new characters thrown in as well—I wasn’t sure about them, but they grew on me by the end of the story. Additionally, we get to see several new settings, each of which thoughtfully created and with their own personalities.
We of course meet some new (and old) fae, and Fawcett does an excellent job describing them in all their creepy glory.
I was ecstatic when I received an ARC of this story, and I was not disappointed. This is certainly among my favorite reads this year. Honestly, this series sets the standard for a good cozy fantasy romance.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands comes out in January 2024.
Thank you to Random House and Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
They're back!! And they're just as charming as ever!! I don't quite think this one gripped me as much as the first one, which is why it's at four stars instead of five, but I am endlessly charmed by the characters and world that this series presents, and the love of academic footnotes that it rests on. It's a really special series, and this book continued on with everything I adored about the first one so I'm just delighted, tbh!!
Why is this series sooooo good?!?! Ahhh!
I haven’t liked a fae series since I first read Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR in 2014/2015.
This is incredibly well-written. So smart. Enchanting. It feels more like a cozy, wrapped in a blanket next to the fireplace historical fiction (with fantasy and mystery elements). And it works!!!
I loved this book! If you're into cozy fantasy, European settings, or academia this book is for you. I devoured this book in two days. The banter, the new supporting characters, the ridiculousness that is Wendell and the Emily's surprising bravery was phenomenal. I hope there's more than just two books in this series!
I was really looking forward to this book and it didn't disappoint! I love the worldbuilding and learning about the different kinds of faeries. Emily continues to be a unique and interesting character and Bambleby is Bambleby. Definitely recommend.
Another fun, action-filled adventure exploring dangerous faerie worlds and creatures with professor Emily Wilde and fae king Bambleby. Seeing the slowburn romance develop even further in this story was enjoyable, and carried the same banter and opposites attract chemistry, but more progressive. Together they quest for a hidden door to the faerie realm and meet assassins, carnivorous beings, and hunt for lost scholars who took lost knowledge with them. I appreciated the addition of new characters to help Emily and Bambleby's adventurous task: Emily's niece, a distrustful fellow professor, and some new faerie creatures who get caught up in the schemes. There was a fun and diverse group dynamic with everyone's different knowledge and abilities. There is a darker tone to this book following the more deadly/grotesque faerie lore- which I appreciated. I deeply hope that in the third, there must be a third, Bambleby's "cat" has a larger role because he definitely became one of my favorite characters!
I’ve been super into cozy fantasy this year and this series is top tier. Such a magical sequel! I have loved Emily and Wendell’s adventures, banter, and (finally!!) romance. Hopefully there will be a third book to wrap up their story, but this was a solid ending place. I can’t wait to buy the audiobook when it is released! Thanks NetGalley and publishers for the ARC.
Historical fantasy meets cottagecore in the second installment of Heather Fawcett's Emily Wilde series. Map of the Otherlands has all the charm of the first book in the series, with even more adventures and a new mystery. Emily and Wendell have returned to Cambridge after escaping the Winter Realm in book one. It's not long before they are met with faerie assassins, ghostly vistations from a mysterious spectral, and faeire magic gone rogue. They must find Wendell's door, or lose their lives (and worse, careers). Despite these high stakes, the book is still filled with hot chocolate mugs, warm hearth sides, forest dwelling fairies, and even a train ride through the Alps. Somehow, Fawcett dials up the action without losing the coziness that makes this series so enjoyable. Recommended for fans of Naomi Novik, Katherine Arden, H.G. Parry, or even Juneau Black.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands, I already preordered a physical copy to hype the book up on tiktok/booktok. Such a big fan of the series.
This was a great follow up to the first book, and the characters continue to shine. I really enjoy Fawcett’s writing style, and I still find the journal-style format a really interesting choice. The way Fawcett has designed fae and woven them into her world makes it feel very natural, and I can't wait to read more of her work.
I was absolutely hooked on book one. I love a story of fae and especially when it consists of things regarding fairie lore and all the trickery that comes with it. This sequel was everything that I could have wanted and hoped in this book. Fawcett's writing is transportive and the banter between Emily and Wendell is both comical and swoon worthy. I found myself becoming giddy with excitement and kicking my feet during certain moments throughout the book. I don’t know what plans are for the future if there is to be a third book or not but I would gladly step into this world again.
Thank you so much Netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review. Also, I love the cover of this so much. The illustrative elements are gorgeous and it accompanies the various typeface choices quite well. Can’t wait to see it in person and hold it in my hands.
