I have absolutely adored being back in the World of Emily, Wendell and Faerie. This certainly doesn’t suffer from middle book syndrome and I enjoyed it even more than the first.

The story begins with Emily and Wendell at University taking lectures when a ghost appears to Emily and then assassins sent by the Faerie Queen come to kill Wendell. Heather Fawcett’s descriptions of the fae is wonderfully descriptive and quite honestly terrifying. The story continues full of mystery, interesting side characters and faerie and I was addicted to reading it! It feels whimsical with a bit of a spooky vibe with all the eyes watching, scratching at doors and creatures in the dark.

Wendell continues to be unapologetically himself which makes for an entertaining read. I particularly loved his ability to ‘mend’. If you know, you know.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this in advance in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fun little fairytale i do really like Emily and Wendell they are very cute. I liked that they added some new friends Rose and Emily’s niece were fun additions to the little group. I also liked that we got to see more of Faerie and different kinds of faeries.I also loved seeing more of Wendell’s backstory and home and seeing Emily get to play hero to Wendell. I also liked all the little enchantments Wendell hides around Emily and his little faerie quirks. The fae are chaotic and i am one hundred percent here for it. I also like the dual timelines and how they inter twine with the search for the doors to fairy and the quest for Wendell to return home and get Emily to agree to his proposal. Overall its a super fun continuation of the story and i look forward to seeing more of these stories.

An immense thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for honoring me with this ARC.

There was an Instagram question that popped up in my feed a few days ago that asked “What book series would you wish would never end?” My answer to that would be the Emily Wilde series. I found myself turning off the page number and percentage read options on my reading app because I didn’t want to know how close I was to reaching the end. This series is like a faerie enchantment and it’s one I will gladly remain enthralled in. I look forward to joining Emily and Wendell on their next adventure.

Absolutely loved book two! Lives up to the fun, whimsy, and solid lore of book one. So glad to have spent more time with these characters and can’t wait for their next adventures. Fawcett does a good job even with the parts of the story that aren’t supposed to be totally clear to Emily herself and has thoroughly learned who each character is in all the situations she pushes them through. Still plenty of good humor moments and I enjoyed the new characters introduced.

Heather Fawcett uses this sequel to further expand the world she created in it's predecessor. The descriptions are lush and her creatures imaginative, while still referencing regional myths. I especially enjoyed her portrayal of courtly fae as ultimately weak, while mortals hold more power than one would expect.

Fawcett succeeds in writing an epistolary novel where so many fail. Her style is unique. That being said, this sequel bears a striking resemblance to the first book. There were many similarities in plot structure which led to little surprise for the reader. The callbacks to the first book also felt forced.

I found myself not connecting with the side characters as much as I did in the first book. This was in part due to the difference in story; however this lack of caring led to moments that were meant to evoke empathy for them, fall flat.

Ultimately, I enjoyed the world Fawcett created but wished for more deviations in story structure from the first book. I was glad to find out what came next for the characters, but in the end, I still craved more resolution.

This is the second installment of Emily Wilde’s journals of her experiences with fae creatures. I adore this series and can’t wait for more! The story is compelling and the characters are wonderfully wrought.

I'm not sure how to introduce this book without saying that it is everything Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries is and MORE. This sequel takes us on the tale as Emily and Wendell search for a hidden door into his realm so he may overthrow his stepmother and retake his kingdom.

This book just adds on to the already long list of things I love about the first book. Emily’s voice is so unique to read from, the fae in this universe feel so unique and fleshed out, and the plot feels much higher stakes than book 1. I was so drawn in and attached to Wendell reclaiming his kingdom that I simply couldn’t draw myself away from it. The chemistry between Wendell and Emily are just unmatched in so many romance books, plus the addition of Rose as a character and voice of reason was so necessary. The addition also showed how much knowledge Emily has about fae, but how unwilling scholars are to give credit to women over men like Wendell and Rose.

Overall, I have preordered the book and will be thinking about this duo for the next 100 years (approximately)

If the book summary sounds good and you haven't read Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries- You must pick this up. It's a 5-star baseline read that you will need to enjoy before picking up this beauty.

This book picks up after the conference celebrating the publication of Encyclopedia of Faeries and Emily is working on her next work. But now we know more about Wendell Bambleby, and his story and the world of fairies are explored. There are new characters, and new locations, along with a few older friends we met in the previous books.

I finished this and it went straight to my favorites shelf.

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands takes us on a whirlwind of a journey through the Austrian Alps (and Faeryland!) where Emily tackles new foes, friends(?), and her romance with Wendell - all while being the studious and intrepid her that we know and love. Armed with convincing plot points, steadfast character development, and all-round good prose, Heather Fawcett successfully expands the Emily Wilde series with book 2. This series has quickly risen to becoming one of my favorites, and clearly for good reason!

My baby (Emily) is learning to love and it is beautiful!

Emily is trying to help Wendall, which immediately involves the foot of a faerie, her niece (Ariadne), and their grumpy high-handed Dean (Rose). A couple assassination attempts later, they end up in Germany.

This adventure had a lot more relationship building than book 1. Emily is overwhelmingly surrounded by people she doesn't really know - Ariadne and Rose - but isn't sure she really likes for different reasons, Wendall and his oddness, a new village of people, and Folk that are angry at their appearance. I enjoyed her one-on-one moments with each character as she starts to (probably accidentally) deepen those relationships.

I did find I wanted her to ease into her relationship with Wendall. Their moments felt... Odd. Not like the ones in book 1, and I can't explain what it is. There was always ease to them, but I feel like his personality wasn't nearly as big as it was in book one and hers wasn't nearly as cantankerous. I think I wanted to see more of that development on page for me to buy into some of the stuff that happened, but otherwise, I still love them both so much!

We get new Faerie friends, some old ones, and a whole new mystery and adventure in this installment - plus the announcement of book 3!!

All in all, I'm in love with this series and I cannot wait to see what happens next!!

Thank you to NetGalley for an e-arc of this highly anticipated sequel!

I absolutely adored Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries so naturally I was thrilled to hear of its sequel and to be able to access an arc! Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands was so excellent and after finishing it I am now back to highly anticipating what comes next. I truly never want this series to end!

Something that really draws me to this series is how it is a perfect blend of fantasy, adventure, and academia. The story takes on an informative and academic style at times as it is delivered through Emily's point of view as she records events in her journal as research material for her next academic project. Following the style of field notes, Emily's journal focuses on observations of her company and the Folk she encounters in her journies, as well as rich descriptions of the picturesque scenes of the story (this one was set mainly in the Austrian alps). I really enjoy this aspect of Fawcett's writing because it transports me to a reality I've always dreamed of: studying faeries (dryadology) in school or as a career! I am also a sucker for academia and writing papers for my own studies, so Emily's use of footnotes in her journal to cite sources and provide background knowledge on faerie history and studies is one of my favorite stylistic details of the series. Heather definitely has a talent for painting beautiful pictures with her descriptions of scenes in both Faerie and the human world. Some smaller details I enjoyed about this book in particular were the scenes at Cambridge (such a cozy academia feel), how Poe, Snowbell, and of course, Wendell converse with Emily, and the Wendell-authored chapter! I really adore how Heather Fawcett depicts the Folk and their culture, but also the experience of being submerged in a different culture in the human world.

Emily Wilde has quickly become one of my favorite series. Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands is full of adventure and action, but maintains a cozy and magical delivery. The characters are loveable, the dialogue is addicting, the settings are alluring, and the plot is nicely enveloped in all the magnificent aspects of this book. I'm so excited to see where this story goes next! (I need about 6 more Emily Wilde books)

Special thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a digital arc of this book!

There is such a softness to this book that makes it feel so much like book 1 but also different. I loved book one of this series so much, if I could describe both books in one word it would be "lovely". Emily and Wendall are one of my favorite books duos to read about and getting to see more of their relationship unfold and evolve was so good. Their relationship works outside of the book plot lines because they have been in each others lives for so many years now that they just simply know how to work together as partners and academic partners.
The introduction of the new characters worked really well with the flow of the book and Ariadne brought such a fun dynamic to the original characters.
The whole plot was so interesting and full of character, the research done about all the different kinds of fae and the histories behind how they all behave is so much fun to read about through Emily's POV and the endnotes that are in each chapter.
I just really love this series and hope to see more out of it!

Emily and Wendell as well as a few new companions flee a faerie attack and head out to the Alps where it’s easy to become trapped in the borderlands and maze of doors.
This book was hard to put down. It maintains the cozy atmosphere and fun banner from book 1 while adding in a new understanding of Faerie and the creatures that live there. This is a must read if you enjoyed book 1

This is the second book to Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Fairies. I got this as an ARC because I absolutely loved the first book and the continuation of the series in this book was fantastic! The academic nature of the writing with the included footnotes that go in depth about different fae and there stories is one of my favorite things about these books. Wendell and Emily relationship really takes off in this one. At the end of book 1 Wendell ||proposes to Emily after she finds out that he is a tall one (high fae)|| and her reaction to it is he must be joking but as thing progress in the storyline of the adventure that the two of them have to take to save his life after a poisoning that is slowly killing him, she really does grow to love him. Which how could you not Wendell Bambleby is the epitome of looks like a cinnamon roll, could kill you.

Heather Fawcett’s magic system and world building is so fantastic. The kingdoms she builds are dark and beautiful as well as the different types of fae. This book went so in-depth on the small ones (common fae) and I loved every second of it. If you love high fantasy and academia this a read for you there is only a slight bit of romance but what you do get is wonderful. I have so many good things to say about this book and I cannot wait until Jan 2024 to get the finished product and see the changes that were made.

I only took off .25 because some of the chapters are very lengthy and I am reader that doesn’t like to stop until I have reached the end of the chapter but that is just me being nitpicky.

Once again this book doesn’t come out until Jan 2024 but the first is out and I recommend it to everyone. (Also look how beautiful this cover is)

After the success of her encyclopaedia, Emily Wilde continues her scholarly ambitions in her newly tenured position by mapping the faerie realms while also in pursuit of a door to Wendell Brambleby’s kingdom in Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett.
While on her way to share with Wendell, her colleague and answer-dependent fiancé, her recent lead on where a door to his kingdom might be located Emily is waylaid by a strange man twisting ribbons who speaks in riddles before disappearing just as suddenly as he arrived and then Wendell’s lecture is ambushed by assassins sent by his stepmother, which he manages to dispatch, though his magic behaved in strange ways that took a larger than anticipated toll on him. Perplexed but undeterred by the recent influx of strange occurrences, Emily shares her theory related to the work of a long ago disappeared scholar, Danielle de Grey, with Wendell and her niece-turned student Ariadne, outlining a plan to travel to the Austrian Alps for their search. While looking for the door and noting locations of other doors to include on her mapping project Emily and her companions encounter various attacks, which drain Wendell and his magic, soon incapacitating him on the brink of death. Determined to save Wendell and, with the help of a few unlikely allies, Emily enters the door to his kingdom in search of his cat, Ogra, but finds herself facing off against Wendell’s stepmother while in a Faerie-induced mental fog and hoping she can return to the mortal realm.
In an entertaining adventure for the faerie folklore scholar and an exiled faerie king seeking a way back to his kingdom, some mysteries, new and old, are uncovered and explored as clues are presented throughout and quick thinking results in pursuing the correction course of action. The writing featured consistencies in narrative style in this second installment in the Emily Wilde series, carrying over an interlude moment from Wendell’s perspective to Emily’s journal entry storytelling of the adventures encountered toward the end as she rests from a trying encounter and the inclusion of clarifying notes remained to expand upon an idea or concept noted, though this time the notes appeared in the middle of the text block instead of at the foot of the page or end of the chapter as they had in the first book (though perhaps this is an ARC file thing). Emily and Wendell’s relationship dynamic is deepened through their interactions with one another from the first book while some new characters are introduced who better highlight more idiosyncratic characteristics of theirs and expand on their relationships with others in their lives, demonstrating how they’ve grown. The conclusion of this tale presents open possibilities for what the future might hold, offering a pleasant ending as well as anticipation to learn just what adventures Emily and Wendell may have next.
Overall, I’d give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

This was a really good second installment in the Emily Wilde series. I really hope there will be at least one more!

In this book, Emily and Wendell pick up the search for a faerie door to get him back to his world after his stepmother starts sending fae assassins to kill him. They are accompanied by Emily’s niece and the curmudgeonly head of the dryadogy department at Cambridge. They follow in the footsteps of two missing faerie researchers who disappeared while looking for the theoretical nexus- a door leading to multiple lands. The fae in this installment are even darker than the first, Emily and Wendell continue with their witty and sweet relationship, and the new and returning characters enhance the charm. I also love the journal entry style of the novel, footnotes and all!

Highly recommend this book for any fantasy lover or those who are into academia novels who enjoy quirky scholars.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book has such a fun premise and execution and I love the author's wit! I stopped after chapter 1 and placed a hold on book 1 at the library, and I am excited to read it first before jumping into this one.

This reads like a sequel. Unfortunately, with that said, it won't be the right fit for our Little Free Libraries. We aim to only purchase books that stand alone since we have such a limited amount of space.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the ARC.

When mysterious faeries from other realms appear at her university, curmudgeonly professor Emily Wilde must uncover their secrets before it’s too late, in this heartwarming, enchanting second installment of the Emily Wilde series.

An excellent sequel. Can't wait for more!

This book was a really nice read! Much like the first I feel like it picked up and carried off where the other left behind. I enjoyed getting to see more of Wendell and Emily in this next venture.

The hopeless romantic in me wishes that Emily gave into Wendell a little sooner, but it fits with her personality that she didn’t.

I really enjoyed how the fairies came to help Emily instead of just being tricksters.

Poe definitely holds a sweet place in my heart. I would love to see some fan art of what the fairies look like.

Look forward to reading what ventures they go on next!
