Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands in exchange of my honest opinion.

I cannot give anything less than 10 stars for this book!
Emily Wilde's Map of Otherlands bring back Emily and Wendell to another fantastic story! This time, Emily is happy with the success of her paper from last books' and are planning to publish a map with all the fairy doors in Europe. Of course the "hidden agenda" is that she is in search of the nexus, a magical passage that would lead them to Wendell's kingdom. Emily will have a lot on her plate in this book: from a jealous scholar colleague, a curious nice that is interning to be her assistant, to Wendell's mother trying to kill him to avoid loosing her throne.

First of all, the depictions of this magic world is just amazing! From the little things like luminescent mushrooms that sprouts in the cabin where they are to the amazing folk creatures that Emily meets along the way. Everything feels just like a fantasy dream in my mind!
Emily and Wendell's relationship is EVERYTHING!! Here we have a grumpy-sunshine trope in which she is the grump and it just makes everything so much more fun!

The pacing of this book is perfect in my opinion. We have a lot of world building that does not drag the narrative because it's mixed with the interesting interactions of Emily and her travel companions and also pure adventure/action scenes.

I also think it was very fun the way we learn about her journey as entries in a diary (and even better when Wendell decided to write on it himself as well).

Anyway, this book is just as good as the previous one and I can't wait to read more of it!

This was so good! It was even better than the first book somehow.

I loved getting to see scholarly, practical Emily and charming, ridiculous Wendell again. It's so refreshing to see a female main character like Emily. I love that she gets to be practical, brave, and clever while also being grumpy at times. And of course I adore Wendell.

The new characters that were introduced in this book all won my heart in their own ways too.

I love the fairytale, folklore vibes of this series and already can't wait for the next one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was the perfect sequel with all of the banter and charm of the first. Emily continues to grown both personally and professionally and it’s a joy to join her latest quest!

First; huge thanks to NetGalley for the e-arc of Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands.

I liked this way more than the first book and I think it has to do with Emily’s character development. I really enjoyed her and it felt like we get more from her this time around than just her research. The motives changed and it made it even better.

Wendell is still the same gorgeous arrogant Fae we all love and adore; just a bit better but I wouldn’t change a thing about him.

The new friends made are amazing, the journey and adventure made me want to physically be there with them 😭 which is just unfair.
Writing style continues to be just as magical as the first time around & I will say this one was also funny which was surprisingly; it had me rolling multiple times 😂.

This has to be one of my favorite cozy fantasy books; but I do need book 3 ASAP!

All opinions on this review are my own.

When I requested this book, I did not know this was book 2, but I absolutely loved it! The magical fae world had me hooked!! The descriptions made me feel like I was in Emily’s universe and I LOVE when books make me feel like I’m actually in the story. I definitely will read the first book and hope for a book 3!

Thank you Net-Galley for a copy of this ARC!

Listen. L I S T E N. I am not a cozy reader. I typically do not grab novels like this but Emily Wilde and her little universe is an auto-read for me. This book was no different!

Map of the Otherlands was SO enchanting. The way Emily writes to you about her world and her daily happenings has me feeling like I'm actually in her little universe, reading up on her fae folk adventures with a cup of tea. Then I put the book down and have to remember that I'm just a lowly human in the US, with fae yet to be found....and I don't even drink tea.

Yet again Emily and Wendell's dynamic is adorable.....but it definitely should have been THREE beds!

I'm praying to the book heavens that there will be a book three! Or 4 or 5 or 100 because I will happily read this series until the day I die

First off. THANK YOU NETGALLEY FOR GIFTING ME THIS ARC FOR READING. (Insert boilerplate language about being given the ARC free of charge for a fair consumer review)

I was able to commence reading the sequel directly after book 1 which aided and abetted this book becoming my personality for...five days? I read these two books in five days with family commitments and work days thrown in there. That should indicate how much I loved these books.

Heather Fawcett, you magnificent beast. Thank you for you deep commitment to fae research. It makes these books written as research journals so much more believable. Always cite your sources (even if they are made up textbook footnotes).

Things that made me sad about this book: <spoiler> Wendell spent most of this book out of commission, drained, or asleep. I get it. I really do. It's what was driving this plot and helped Emily realize her feelings. That being said, I missed the verve and pep he gave the last book. He plays off Emily so beautifully that I missed their byplay. </spoiler>

Things that made me mad: <spoiler> I guess Emily had to be an idiot at some point, right? But after spending so much time trusting her instincts when it comes the fae, to completely act almost out of character with objects she previously trusted to guide her...was disappointing. I understand the whole, not quite lucid because of Folk enchantments thing. But it felt like I was being robbed of one of the things I loved the most about Emily. Then again, she had to be human at some point. </spoiler>

The ambiguous opening left for book three now means I have to wait...such a long, long time for it if it's happening (It's happening, right, Heather? Right?? I need more Emily and Wendell in my life.) since I got the instant gratification of book 2 six months in advance. Thanks, karma.

Things that made me happy: Emily. Wendell. But I missed the townspeople from the first book. This town didn't do it for me quite like the first one. But huzzah for mortal and common fae movers and shakers. We don't need those big guys.

All in all, Book 1 was superb. Read it now. Book 2 sufficed to answer a lot of questions about background and decision-making for going forward. It felt very much like a bridge book. And I sincerely hope there is a book three where Emily drags Wendell reluctantly along for another adventure </spoiler> now that he's back to 100%. Even if he's busy rebuilding his kingdom. He should appoint that brother and his husband as backup so he can travel with Emily </spoiler>.

I absolutely loved this book. Admittedly, I had not read the first in the series prior but I will absolutely be circling back to it. That being said, I don't think it deterred me from understanding the storyline of this novel. I loved the quirky Emily Wilde and was captivated by the events of the story. It wasn't the typical Fae-type story I'm used to it that made it all the more appealing.

Emily and Wendell have returned to Cambridge following their adventures in Hrafnsvik, though it's anything but quiet. After faerie assassins descend on the school grounds, the pair quickly set off to Austria under the pretense of Emily's newest project to map the realms of faerie, in hopes of finding a door back to Wendell's home realm before it's too late. All the while, Wendell's proposal to Emily hangs in the air as she wonders whether she can truly trust one of the courtly fae.

I adore Wendell and Emily just as much as ever. Emily is much of her same old self but we do see growth from the previous novel in the way she is much more self aware in her interactions with others. We get to learn more about Wendell's background and see him demonstrate his magic in unexpected ways. Their banter is amusing as always and, while the romance is more of a tease than a subplot, I live for the breadcrumbs of intimacy between them.

We are introduced to several new characters, some lovable and others wonderfully infuriating, and this book is certainly more fast paced than the prior novel. Things happen quickly, the stakes are higher, and I was hooked immediately. There is plenty of humor and wit, lots of magic and lore, and overall this is a fantastic sequel.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the digital ARC.

Coming back into Emily Wilde’s world is not for the faint of heart!

Faucet is definitely more comfortable with her characters this turn around and it adds to a more thrilling story where something is always happening. The author has a very natural way of writing that brings the story to the reader.

Throughout my readings I would forget that this wasn’t an actual “scientific “ journal (ha-ha). I was hoping for a more personal approach, but we still get the footnotes and all the research. We are able to jump into Wendell and Emily’s relationship alongside a lot of other colorful characters !!

I was very happy and thankful for the free ARC from NetGalley(:

Emily and Wendell's adventure into Fairie continues! I absolutely adored the first book in this series, and the sequel didn't disappoint. We're introduced to new characters, including Ariadne, Emily's niece, who she has a somewhat fraught relationship with. I really liked their dynamic together and watching their relationship grow. Ariadne so looks up to Emily and wants to be like her, while Emily isn't used to being affectionate or having that close, familial relationship with people. More often than not, Emily is tactless and careless with her niece while also wanting to protect her from the real dangers of their field. By the end, they have their heart to heart and I was really proud of how Emily apologized for her mistakes.

There's so much to love about this series, from the dangerous fairie landscape our characters choose to explore during field studies, to our beloved narrator herself. Emily remains my favorite character for how strong-willed, clever, and willing to grow she is. While she might be the smartest person in the room, it's no secret her emotional intelligence is lacking. It's this reason that makes her romance with Wendell all the more compelling to me. In this installment, she's more torn than ever over Wendell's proposal from the last book. She knows his world is dangerous and that despite how harmless he seems, he may well be as deceitful as the fairie's of his world. And yet, she can't help but be drawn to him. They're such opposites, but they work so well together.

I'm so glad she finally said to his proposal, and I can't wait to see what their next adventure will be! I'm so curious as to how their story will wrap up (I'm assuming the third book is the last?). Will Emily continue her studies beside Wendell as Queen of his realm? Or will she abandon Cambridge altogether for the wild world of Fairie? I need to know how her story ends, and I need her to be happy! But I also love this series so much, I don't want it to end yet!

WOW. To start off - this book went above my expectations and I could not put it down. It was written the same as the first, reading like an academic journal with footnotes but I very much liked that we got a more personal look into Emily’s life, thoughts, and feelings. There was also action that started a lot quicker in this book and it felt more fast-paced. It was very different emotionally because Emily now had personal reasons versus academic that made her need to succeed in her field research more important which I enjoyed immensely.

We get to see new characters and old ones from the first book which I highly enjoyed and loved all of them. There’s a new adventure with assassins, new faeries, and new places to explore while trying to find Wendell’s realm.

The author’s writing style is just brilliant and the way she describes the landscape and creatures always fascinates me. If the types of faeries in the Emily Wilde books were real, I would most definitely become a dyradologist to study them. All of the descriptions and new faeries that are discovered and talked about make me want an entire book on just the descriptions of them. (PLEASE??!)

It was a closed-door romance which is my only wish that we saw more because yes I like a little spice in my books but the romance and banter make up for it and I love reading about Emily and Wendell. There were a lot more interactions, banter, and romance between the two in this book which is exactly what I was hoping for after I read the first one and I LOVED it.

So, if you’ve read Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries I highly suggest reading this one! If you haven’t yet read this series I highly suggest you do if you like historical fantasy, romance, action, the fae, and cozy fantasy. This book did not disappoint and it will be out January 16th, 2024!

Thank you so much to Netgalley, Del Rey, and the author for the e-arc of this book. I feel absolutely honored for being able to read it early!

I loved the first book in this series so I excitedly picked up this one. Unfortunately, I didn't love it quite as much as the first one though I did like quite a bit about it. I'm hoping that the third book will be a bit more exciting and introduce additional unique and interesting characters.

I loved the first Emily Wilde book so I had high hopes for this. This book was good, but did take me a bit longer to get into. It was missing that cozy feeling from the first book. I loved reading about the new types of Folk and the way the author vibrantly paints locations (I mean, GREECE!). I liked the addition of Ariadne, which allowed for emotional growth for Emily. The things I loved most about this book were the feelings of triumph at the end and seeing how brilliantly Emily solved the problems they were facing. Thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC!

“Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands” is enchanting, to say the least. Emily and Wendell journey on a research trip following the developments from the first installment, along with a few new companions. This sequel was just as delightful as the first book, “Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries.” I loved the way the plot continues naturally from the first book into the sequel. Emily and Wendell’s relationship is full of humor and charm. And I am overjoyed to say that my favorite faerie Poe returns in this book. The reader is not only immersed in a world of the magical, but also learns about this world from an experiential and educational perspective.

Thank you Random House Publishing Group Ballantine and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

This book was even better than the first! I truly love Emily so much. I just think she’s so fun to read. This book was another fun look into faerie and amazing set up for book 3! Can’t wait to see their story continue.

*Thank you NetGalley for an advance eARC of this novel*

This novel was such a wonderful continuation of the Emily Wilde story, adding a few more characters to both move and challenge the status quo. Starting up right after the last novel left off, the academic setting in order to reorganize and identify the main conflict the of second installment. Fleeing after picking up the above mentioned new characters, Emily and Wendell work towards finding an elusive door that will lead them into their determined faerie world. Working to cure poisonings, delivering of marriage proposals, running through realms and much, much more.

I feel this story was a little less deep than the previous novel, as the characters were less tangible, artistic language replacing their depth. Due to instances involving faerie realism, characters memories were distorted, leaving the reader less able to picture the narrative. There were also a few faerie characters brought up the the previous novel that were not reprised their roles and felt a little flat in their lack of callback (looking maybe for this if their is a third novel?).

Overall this was a wonderful possible conclusion to their story. The cozy, cruising pace of this narrative was able to conclude the present conflict, leaving the story to continue. Emily and Wendell grow and stay the same over this snapshot of their journey. I hope you take the time to appreciate the wonderful work before us.

With Emily Wilde #1 becoming an instant favorite, my excitement for this release was through the roof! And Heather Fawcett has done it again. This book had me glued to the page, laughing and gasping at all the appropriate moments.

Of course, the old cast is as wonderful as ever. Emily is exactly as cranky and academically focused as she was in the first book. I love her independence and her will, and Fawcett draws out the softer, more emotional parts of her to grow her character in this book. She makes some crucial admissions, remaining endearingly awkward all the while. This book solidified her position as one of my favorite narrators in a while. As for Wendell, he is truly as entertaining as ever. His antics get no less dramatic, yet I loved the tenderness that slips out. The pair are truly something special, all preciousness and banter.

The new cast is quite fun too! The begrudging friendships that Emily develops are a delight to follow. There's the department head Rose, who was my personal favorite addition. His stuffiness is paired with a surprising humility and wisdom. Ariadne is also quite sweet and passionate. I must admit I didn't quite see her role in the story or what she contributed, but I liked her nonetheless.

As always, the prose is an absolute joy to read. I love Heather Fawcett's rich writing style and her incredible ability to capture the harsh beauty of untamed land. Just as in the last book, I could practically feel the harsh wind and cold on my skin. The academic investigations into Faerie were delightful as well (the footnotes have my heart)! The way Heather Fawcett intertwines folklore is wonderful, and I wished for more. Overall, I felt that this book felt less academic and literary than the first, which reflect Emily's own personal motivations being tied in.

I loved the humor, the coziness, the atmosphere, and the satisfaction of a sequel that does exactly what you wish for and more. And so, the inevitable pining for the next installation commences...

As someone who adored the first book, it was a perfect sequel. The fantasy academia, Emily and Wendell's dynamic, the faeries themselves -- all the elements I liked from the first book were present and developed even further. The academic side of things is portrayed by the unraveling of a historical mystery, which led to a more high-stakes atmosphere as the characters face danger and the violent side of the fae. Emily and Wendell's relationship continues to be on the slowburn side as Emily weighs the risks, but it definitely has picked up from the academic rivalry they started with! Overall, I really enjoyed adventuring with Emily throughout the book. Charming, witty, and a lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon :)

I was so thrilled to receive an e-ARC of the sequel to one of my favourite reads of the year! Thank you to NetGalley for this review copy.

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands is a strong follow-up to the first book, and contains everything I loved about Encyclopaedia of Faeries—a fun, quaint new European setting, new faerie antics, and the gradual development of Emily and Wendell's relationship, plus a few new side characters whom I really loved. Unfortunately, this strength was also sort of the book's downfall. I feel like this story didn't tread much new ground, hitting many of the same beats as the first book all over again with what felt like a decent amount of stagnation for the two main characters. (This is a little ironic for me, given that one of my main thoughts after reading the first book was "Wow, I could read a thousand more that are exactly like this." Careful what you wish for.)

That being said, I found the first book light and enjoyable with tons of interesting faerie lore, and reading the sequel was pretty much the same experience sans a little bit of that starry-eyed novelty and excitement. Given how the overarching story is ramping up, I'm hopeful that the third book will go on to surprise me a bit more than this one did.

TLDR: serviceable and fun, but not nearly as innovative, and I didn't devour this sequel like I did the first book.
