Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands is exactly what a reader wants from a sequel - a great continuation of the story and your favorite characters that also leaves you hungry for the next installment. A new cast of characters joins our adventuring, faerie researching dynamic duo in their quest to find Wendell's enigmatic door. Fans of the first book will enjoy this continuation!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for my copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review!
Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands: Book 2 of the Emily Wilde Series by Heather Fawcett is a great fiction that has it all. Everyone should read this series.
This book has it all: fantasy, history, action, suspense, romance, and a stunning cast of characters that stay true to their origins in the first book, but yet develop and grow within this series of adventures. Emily, Wendell, and the rest of the well-crafted characters are back for a sequel that honestly is just as good as the first book.
I highly recommend this.

Thank you NG and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Del Rey for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 1/16/24.
Amazing! This was somehow even better than the first. I absolutely adore this series and it just keeps getting better.
Wendell & Emily are so much fun to read, and I can’t help but get lost in their world. This, like the first book, is the ultimate whimsical, cozy, fantasy to curl up with with some tea. I read it in one sitting and I don’t know how I will be able to wait for another one of their adventures.
Every time I finish an Emily Wilde book I end up just sitting there and clutching my kindle to my heart. This was so gosh darn charming and delightful, it felt like eating a plate of homemade cookies. When I first started the book, I was nervous it was going to be disappointed, but I’m so happy it proved me wrong. This book had a larger scope than the previous, it felt like more of a grand adventure. I loved how it expanded so much of the faerie world which added so much richness to it. And of course, the Emily x Wendell vibes were 10/10 perfection, everything I could want and more. I do have to say, I did find that the secondary characters of this didn’t quite live up to the villagers of the first book. And while I did love the adventure, I missed some of those small, quiet moments from the first book. It’s hard comparing it to the first book because that first one was so darn perfect, but I really do think this is close to perfect. I adored this and I would honestly read anything following Emily and Wendell.
ARC provided by NetGalley.
AND WHEN IS THE NEXT ONE, THEN? I received a copy of this eARC from NetGalley this afternoon, and I didn’t put my tablet down until it was finished. The control this story has over me is like I’m in Faerie. It’s 2 am and I’m still ready for more.
Wendell and Emily (and some new friends) are off on a new adventure, and it’s just as exciting and harrowing as the last. The friendships, the importance of local communities (both humans and fae), the romance, it’s all there and just as good as last time. Except now I want a Poe AND a Snowbell.
Emily is just as clever and resourceful as she is the first book, Wendell just as… Wendell as the first book, too. The characterizations didn’t change at all, they just grew and adapted to the new story. Just a great follow up to the first book!
I received this eARC from NetGalley and thank the publishers. All opinions are my own.
this was a really good! I liked the characters, and they were super well-developed. the plot was super cool and fun to read, and the writing was also smooth and easy to understand
highly recommend
I didn’t think I could love the world of Emily Wilde any more than I already did, but here we are! Map of the Otherlands is such a fun romp!
Mysterious apparitions and the threat of faerie assassins drive Emily and Wendell to attempt to follow in the footsteps of Danielle de Gray, an dryadologist who disappeared in the field decades before. Their research brings them, along with the head of the Dryadology department and Emily’s niece, to the Austrian Alps in search of a nexus point, and ultimately (hopefully), a door to Wendell’s kingdom.
This book was a perfect balance of the things that made me fall in love with Encyclopaedia of Faeries with new adventures and friends. I loved every minute of it.
A big thank you to the publisher for letting me at this one early! I've been dying for the sequel since I finished the first book last fall. (one of the benefits of librarianship is that sometimes people let you read books early and for free). 4.5 stars? I guess? But I am rounding up to 5 here because it's my slumber party and I get to hand out 5 star reviews to whatever books I want to.
I can't say too much yet, but I can definitely say that if you liked the first one, you'll like this one too. Everyone is as delightful and chaotic as ever, and the ending is satisfying enough for now while leaving lots of room for more. The Mummy vibes are so powerful, also. *chef's kiss*
EDIT: You know what though? There is an...omission, I guess we'll call it? So we don't spoil anything - that made me very grumpy. It's not too late to un-omit it, though! Please, Ms. Fawcett 🥺.
Now to wait for my friends to get their egalleys so I can talk to someone about it. I'm fine, this is FINE.
Every bit as fun, breezy, and fast-moving as the first book! When Wendell is poisoned by his stepmother, his and Emily's quest to find the door to his kingdom is kicked into overdrive, sending them off to a small town in the Alps accompanied by their department supervisor, Emily's niece/research assistant, and of course Emily's faithful dog Shadow. Having just finished Babel, I feel obligated to point out that this series is to academia and ethnography as Legends & Lattes is to food service: it's fun, but it's not trying to make any statements about the exploitative nature of the whole landscape. You're not meant to think too hard about it.
As captivating and charming as the first Emily Wilde book, I tore through this sequel in three days. I love the balance of cozy fantasy with the often very grim and terrifying horror of the Faerie world. I can't wait to read the next!
