I am unable to rate this book because I had the audiobook on my phone and then I had to get a new phone and it was archived. I give them 3 stars to not mess up their ratings.
Edvardsson has a talent for creating ethically ambiguous characters that make it difficult for the reader to decide who to cheer for or who is speaking the truth! The fact that every character in his most recent novel belonged to an odd family made this much more fascinating. Fortunately, there are connections here as well. Although the story goes from Bill to Karla to Jennica, each character was developed to a full degree and had distinct challenges, so it was never difficult to follow the plot lines as we went from one place to another.
Listening to these individuals was entertaining enough, even if I wouldn't describe any of them as LIKABLE. However, the storyline seemed a little plodding and forced at the same time.
Quick and easy ready! A was sucked in by the story and felt satisfied at the end! A huge thank you to Macmillan Audio for granting me access to this title!
In this compulsively readable thriller, a wealthy couple meets a tragic end in the nicest part of town. Bill Olsson, recently widowed, struggles to provide for his daughter, Sally. Desperate to make ends meet, he welcomes Karla, a law student and aspiring judge, as a lodger. Karla works as a housekeeper for the Rytters, an incredibly wealthy couple who hide behind closed doors. The wife is ill and rarely leaves the house, while the husband is controlling and obsessive. As Bill’s situation worsens, Karla faces a difficult choice. When the Rytters are found dead, Karla is pulled into questioning, forced to defend parts of her past she’d rather forget.
The novel weaves together multiple perspectives, revealing secrets and questionable behavior. If you enjoy character-driven mysteries with unexpected twists, The Woman Inside is worth a read. The ending will surprise you! 🌟
This mystery had some interesting twists and turns and was relatively fast-paced. Thanks NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audiobook ARC.
"The Woman Inside" by M.T. Edvardsson is a mystery/thriller, with some psychological thriller aspects, as well as some parts that are more of a crime novel. I personally really enjoyed this genre mix. I was pulled into the story immediately, and I *had* to know what happened.
Though this is a mystery/thriller, some parts are a little slow. I think it could have been a little bit shorter. That being said, I was really invested in this plot. The characters make some terrible decisions, but I still somehow cared about what happened to them. I enjoyed the plot of this story, there were many twists that I didn't see coming!
The audio narrators for this were very good, and I enjoyed listening to this! I really appreciated the fact that there was more than one narrator for this story, I think it would have been harder to follow without that!
Overall, I'm very interested in reading more of Edvardsson's writing!
Thank you to NetGalley, M.T. Edvardsson, and Macmillan Audio for the advanced audio copy of this book! All opinions are my own.
This is a very atmospheric story full of mystery, good twists, and interesting characterless! Thank you for my advanced ALC!
My sincere thanks to both NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the complimentary audiobook.
This won’t be my finest review. I’m catching up on both reading and reviews (disabled/chronic illness life…) and I lost my notes from when I read this title.
Here’s what I remember:
The author's book with several POVs was *MUCH* clearer and well defined (daughter, father, mother characters). This book, even with the different narrators…I spent the first 1/3-1/2 of the book wondering who the heck everyone was and it wasn’t fun. At all.
I didn’t feel there were too many characters here to root for.
I think it’s telling I’m scrabbling to remember much of anything to say, and nothing is standing out much at all in my memory except a vaguely recalled tense bathroom scene between the cleaner and the lady of the house.
The book was overly complicated, confusing and a slog. I’m fine having clearly, mostly deleted it from my memory bank.
The Woman Inside is an ominous, character-driven thriller that takes you into the life of a handful of people, including Bill Olsson, an unemployed widower who will do whatever it takes to keep the roof over his daughter’s head but has an unfortunate addiction to gambling, and Karla Larsson, a young law student trying to live as frugally as possible while working a part-time job as a maid for some unusual clients and by renting just a single room in a stranger’s apartment.
The writing is tight and intense. The characters are complex, secretive, and distressed. And the plot, told using a mixture of narrative, police interviews, and alternating timelines, before-and-after the murders, is a sinister tale full of twists, turns, loneliness, insecurities, lies, obsession, manipulation, violence, infidelity, troubled pasts, and murder.
Overall, The Woman Inside is a tortuous, addictive, unnerving tale by Edvardsson that kept me guessing from the very first page and was deliciously relentless, surprising, deceptive, and bursting with misdirection.
Have you ever had a book where you were much more interested in the blurb than the actual book? This one did that for me. The pace was too slow, I found myself constantly getting distracted from the book, and the characters were mind-numbingly bland. HOWEVER, I will give this author props because English is not his first language. I’m hoping that’s the main reason why I couldn’t grasp my hands around this one.
All of the characters were majorly one-dimensional. I never got that substance I was searching for. The one character I enjoyed was Karla. Her back story was sad and I felt that. However, me liking her wasn’t enough to revive this book for me. I hate that it wasn’t a hit.
The pace moved like a snail. By the 40% mark, I couldn’t tell you one major thing that happened. The reasoning being because nothing was actually happening until the second half. I couldn’t focus reading this one. I found myself actually wanting to put the book down to do something else. Most of the time, you’d have to pry a book out of my hands before I’d put it down. I felt like I had to force myself to actually read this.
Pairings the ebook with the audio made this a tad bit more enjoyable. I can tell you that I am a sucker for accents. The accents made this one more tolerable. So if you decide to pick this one up, definitely opt for the audio.
The Woman Inside was a bingeable and suspenseful read.
Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️
I was familiar with this particular storyline from reading other mystery/thrillers but this book definitely had its own twists and turns that I didn’t see coming!
The story begins when a wealthy couple is found dead in their home. The police begin to question a group of people who may or may not have a connection to the victims.
These characters are Bill, Kara and Jennica. The police need to find out how they are connected to the victims and if one of them is guilty for the murders. The characters seemed innocent at the beginning but as the story unfolds, their secrets come to the surface and this is where the story gets interesting! Highly recommend to those who like multiple POVs, suspense, and a whodunnit storyline.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
Bill is a struggling dad trying to keep his daughter after his wife's death. In order to make some extra cash he rents one of the rooms in his apartment to Karla, a student, who works for a cleaning company, cleaning very fancy houses.
Jennica is the daughter of a rich family who cannot understand her friends who are getting married and having kids, until one day she goes a date with an older man who sounds perfect. They date for a while until she discovers his secrets!
This books has multiple narrators and in the beginning it was a bit difficult to keep track of who was who, but things fell into place pretty fast. You get to follow the narrative from people's different view points and also see parts of the interrogatories after "a crime" is committed.
The story is nice, but it's not a page turner. At some points the story had way too many details and I was just thinking why 'do I need to know all of this to get to the "whodunit" part?'
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy is exchange for my honest review.
The Woman Inside was a thrilling fun read. I struggled at the beginning with the audio as it was a lot to keep up with but I eventually got the hang of it! I loved how it intertwined between all the characters and the different perspectives. This was my second novel by Edvardsson and I enjoyed both tremendously!
t leaned more towards domestic drama than a thriller. The inclusion of police reports and interrogation recordings was enjoyable, and the guessing game of who killed who kept me engaged, and the narrators were fantastic.
I’m a sucker for a murder mystery with multiple POV’s. While the characters start as sympathetic characters you eventually come to realize they are hiding something. Eventually you find out that they all have dark pasts. The writing in this story was very atmospheric . Overall would recommend.
I can appreciate a dark, twisty story where the cast is unlikeable and we had that in spades here. I had the audio version and I appreciate multiple narrators for a multi POV story. I will say, it was more of a domestic drama instead of particularly mysterious/thrilling. Solid 3 stars.
Loved this book! The characters were great. I felt like I knew them, and never swathe twists and turns coming!
The Woman Inside was a very twisty thriller, but a bit predictable for me. The narration wasn't very enjoyable to me, but the dealing POVs were very well written. Even though the character weren't too great, I still enjoyed listening to this who dun it and it was good enough to keep my interest piqued to listen until the end.
Thank you Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for an early copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was just the whodunnit mystery I was looking for!
THE WOMAN INSIDE follows the story of the mystery behind the murder of a wealthy couple.
WHAT TO EXPECT
-dual POV
-likeable characters
-secrets
-whodunnit
I paired the book with audio, and loved the narration and found myself easily immersed with each character with various accents.
*many thanks to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the gifted copy for review
The Woman Inside is told through dual POVs as it works to uncover who murdered a wealthy couple.
Overall I enjoyed this, I found the characters likeable and was interested in all perspectives as secrets were being uncovered. Having multiple narrators added to the entertainment and they were all easy to listen to.
I just didn’t feel a lot of tension as we got closer to the truth. I guessed whodunnit early on so maybe that contributed to it for me.
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
