Rachel Hawkins always delivers, and The Heiress proves that for me. The characters were likeable (or unlikeable) enough to keep me rapt, the story was perfectly paced, and it was just twisty enough to keep me guessing. I loved the way the dual timelines were woven together. A solid thriller.
A great thriller and reminiscent of the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo! Held my attention & was a page turner.
That cover tho! (All the heart eyes for Rachel Hawkin's covers.) I thoroughly enjoyed this mansion mystery and the entertaining cast of characters who take turns vying for it. It's a multi-generational family drama with many bad actors, but that only made it more twisty and fun. A satisfying conclusion!
What a story - mystery, intrigue, murder and suspense. The story was around Cam and Jules and their pasts. Ruby was at the center of it all as Cam's adopted mother. The McTavish family was so rich that it twisted them. Ruby had had 4 husbands and they all died. By accident of murder? Money says they are accidents. Years later, she dies and then her sister, Nelle - again natural or murder? This story kept me interested and intrigued until the end. Even then, a new clue pops up. A very good story
I got this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Sometimes you find an author that doesn't miss. Or at least that has been my luck with Hawkins so far (this only being my second of her books).
The Heiress made me want to keep reading. What was going to be the big secret that revealed while Cam had been away so long? Why was his wife seeming to conspire with his cousin? Those were the questions that captured me right away and kept me wanting more.
Also, set the scene in a creepy mansion in a little town and I'm sold.
I have to admit I absolutely loved this GEM of a book. It wasn't super thrillerish but definitely had its moments of suspense. The entire time you're wondering who Ruby was writing these letters to. And honestly the whole time I thought it was one character whilst it was to someone entirely different.
The twist at the end was definitely worth reading through this book so quickly for. I absolutely enjoyed this book and thought the story of Jules and Cam was a fun ride.
The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins did not disappoint. I usually do not prefer books with multiple main characters and perspectives, but this was done perfectly. The plot had excellent pacing with great build up of suspense.
I enjoyed this book. It reminded me in ways of “The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” but with a darker twist. I felt that this one wasn’t as suspenseful as Rachel’s other books, but it was still good and kept me wanting to read. I wish it was a little scarier!
Famous, eccentric, and glamourous - Ruby McTavish is well known around North Carolina for being all of those things, and also a 4 time widow. Her life is completely drama-filled, from the time she was a young child when she was kidnapped and returned to her family, to each of the 4 shocking deaths of her husbands. When she dies at a ripe old age, everyone is shocked to learn that Ruby's one and only heir, her adopted son Camden, is not interested in any part of the family inheritance. He has already escaped to California, settled down, and gotten married in an attempt to avoid all the family drama. But Camden's wife soon learns of the inheritance, and is curious to go see what it is all about in NC. But will she regret it?
This book was so good! I am a huge Rachel Hawkins fan, and will read whatever she writes. I found myself up late and night, reading this book and I devoured it in a couple of days. The characters were so well written, and I loved the letters that Ruby wrote to a mystery recipient. As each secret is revealed, the reader feels like they know what is going on, but I definitely could not get it all pieced together until the very end. Well done, one of 5 books I have read this year that earned 5 stars from me.
Special thank you to Netgally, and the publisher, St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Publication date: Jan 9, 2024.
Really enjoy all of Hawkins' novels I have read so far, including this one. The Heiress might be my favorite. I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and the family drama story line. Great read!
The way this story completely took me out with more than one plot twist! Many things I didn't see coming. At the beginning I did feel that it had a slow start. I now understand it was needed to build up the plot and many twist. The slow start was necessary to include everything that needed to be. Definitely recommend this awesome story! I felt close to Cam and the things he went through as a kid and even something he went through as an adult.
I think this maybe the author’s best book yet. I loved all the characters and the location of where the book took place. The book shows that money is not really all that important. The wife is trying hard to get her husband’s family back together after years of estrangement. She really wants to see how the wealthy live. A good easy read that will hold your attention.
I didn’t like this book as much as I liked The Villa. That said, I still really enjoyed the many twists and turns. Hawkins’ books are romantic thrillers, and The Heiress is no exception. Even the title leaves you hanging: which character really is The Heiress???
Wow that was fun. Sinister and unassuming. I’ve only read one other book by Hawkins, (The Villa) and that doesn’t hold a candle to how clever and fun this one was. The story was strong, and each character had their own unique voice. A page turner for sure as the twists kept coming. Jules was a scene stealer and every bit was satisfying.
For fans of Alice Feeney and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I went into this thinking it was going to be a thriller, but it was more of a mystery family drama but I still enjoyed it. I was hooked from the beginning with different POVs & letters from the past that come in and tie things together. I did not see the twist at the end coming and I love that!
I have to say this book pulled me right out of my reading slump. Rachel Hawkins blew this book out of the water. I was completely sucked in and could not read the book fast enough. You will always find a few or in this case many secrets behind a wealthy family. The storytelling of these secrets being exposed was done beautifully. I promise you will not regret adding this book to your future TBR! This is a book I could read again. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!

The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins tells the story of a wealthy family and the lengths they will go to keep that wealth.
Rachel Hawkins does it again! This book was amazing. The characters are all very interesting, the plot is full of twists and turns and the conlusion is great. I was honestly clueless through the whole story until everything came together at the end. I loved it.
I was given this book in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC.
My first recommendation for this book is to wait until you have a decent block of time because I think it will be best read in one or two sittings. As it was, I was reading it in between things I had to do and still thoroughly enjoyed it. This one was definitely a step up from The Villa for me.
This book is the epitome of the saying ‘money is the root of all evil’ and it was wonderfully twisty. Every person in it has at least a little bit of a dark side to them, so it was fun in a way trying to decide who to root for. The McTavish family definitely had shades of the Murdaugh family for me—a storied Southern family with more money than anyone knows what to with other than using it to make all their problems go away or cover up their problem-solving methods.
There were so many turns throughout the story, and one of the reveals I was most pleased about was one I didn’t see coming.
I don’t love mixed media insertions as chapters in books, though they were used effectively here. It’s still not my favorite format of storytelling, especially when there were already letters from Ruby being used as part of the storytelling technique. It felt like a lot of excess, but again, it did all have relevance to the story being told.
This was a solid read and Rachel Hawkins did a great job weaving this tale.
I couldn’t get into this book. I did like this authors first book so I thought I would try this one but it wasn’t for me.
This book is not my favorite but I do believe its the writing style the author chose for this book. It is not her normal writing so that could be it. It is written in a way that I imagine a rich heiress passing along secrets from beyond the grave would be. I feel this is a book you either rate it like me or 5 stars and its simply off the delivery. I do believe it will "read" better as an audio book to help with that character deviation.
