Thank you net galley and publisher for this ARC. This is the first book I've read by Rachel Hawkins and wow this book had so many twists and layers that I didn't expect. Initially the book was a little hard to get into and slow, but then I enjoyed it more.
The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins kept me interested, but dragged a bit throughout. The ending also felt far fetched and unsatisfying. Still an enjoyable read overall.
Honestly, the first half of this book just felt like it dragged on, but then it really picked up and got good!
This was super hard to put down. I loved all the mysteries throughout the book, but there were a couple times that it was almost too convoluted to follow at times. I love Rachel Hawkins’ writing style. It is very engaging and entertaining.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
If you enjoy thrillers with:
-Multiple POVs
-Dual timelines
-Twisted family history...
Then this book is for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and found this bingeworthy and unputdownable. The setting of the mysterious yet claustrophobic Ashby House was intriguing and ominous. I had read the author's previous work, "The Wife Upstairs" and found I enjoyed the Heiress even more. This grabbed my attention from the beginning and I found myself reading late into the night. I definitely recommend.
I have to say that my expectations for this book were not quite the same as what it turned out to be. This read more as a family drama than a thriller. After a point, nothing that was revealed came as a surprise. All of the characters seemed a bit flat and unrounded to me. All of them were unlikeable and I did not care about any of them by the end of the book. There was a theme throughout that these people did anything they wanted at the cost of others without remorse or consequences. They very often use the money as a fixer to get away with their sins. None of them was better than the other. Perhaps that was the point that the author was going for, but I found it ponderous and a bit trite. To me, the book never quite made the promise that was set up in the blurb.
In "The Heiress" by Rachel Hawkins, a riveting tale unfolds as Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore's death sets off a chain of revelations. Her wealth and infamous history cast a shadow over the town of Tavistock. When her adopted son, Camden, shuns his inheritance, the story takes an unexpected turn.
Years later, Cam and his wife, Jules, return to the McTavish world at Ashby House. The estate holds secrets about Ruby's past, her four mysterious husbands, and Cam's adoption. The narrative skillfully navigates family bonds and buried truths.
For thriller enthusiasts, "The Heiress" is a captivating choice. With its suspenseful plot, intricate characters, and relentless pacing, the novel keeps you engaged from start to finish. Dive into this gripping mystery where legacies are more than money, and family secrets are starting to be revealed.
Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin’s Press for the eARC! I’m a big fan of Rachel Hawkins’ writing style. The short chapters and turns her stories take make for an addictive reading experience. I’ve enjoyed all of her previous thrillers but this may be my favorite yet! Who doesn’t love a mysterious and alluring heiress and her family that clearly has secrets to be uncovered. I loved the letters from Ruby, the aforementioned heiress. This was a great, quick read! Rachel Hawkins doesn’t disappoint! I also loved the Easter egg mention of Aestas, an album by one of the characters in Hawkins’ precious thriller: The Villa.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Oh wow! Loved the pacing, the story, the setting, the characters, EVERYTHING. What an amazing read. I won’t try to give a synopsis as I don’t want to confuse anyone, but just know it is mystery involving money and southern charm ;). I kept trying to figure out the plot twists and I failed miserably every time. At first, I was unsure about the alternating POVs between Jules, Cam, and Ruby but it all came together beautifully at the end. 5/5 ⭐️
Thank you, St. Martin’s Press, Netgalley and Rachel Hawkins for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Next Read: The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I just finished this today. In The Heiress, we follow Cam and his wife Jules. Cam was adopted by a very wealthy woman, Ruby. Ruby is the first born daughter of the McTavish Family. When she was a toddler she got lost in the woods and another family found her. Her family paid a lot of money to get her back. Back to the present, Ruby’s family doesn’t take kindly to the entire McTavish fortune being left to this “interloper.” Cam entually leaves and starts his own life with Jules. But he is drawn back to the house and all the secrets it’s holds after Ruby dies.
This is a page turner!!! There are a couple dumb plot holes (thus I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5). I am amazed by Hawkins’ imagination and The Heiress runs a very close second in my opinion to The Villa!
I love #rachelhawkins books. I particularly enjoyed her last one The Villa. I feel it was her best. The Heiress is scheduled to publish in January 2024.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced reading copy of this amazing title!
What a fun, addictive, and clever read! Full of twists and turns, a captivating mystery, and interesting characters, this quick-paced read is one you will not be able to put down.
The book is told from three POV's: Ruby, Camden, and Jules.
Ruby McTavish is the notorious heiress of the McTavish riches and Ashby House. Ruby passes away prior to the events of the book, so her POV is told through letters. This woman is wild and her letters will take you on a crazy journey!
Camden is Ruby's adopted son, who inherits the massive McTavish fortune, Years prior to the events of the novel, Cam moves away. He is completely estranged from his family and wants nothing to do with them.
Jules is Cam's wife. Jules had a rough childhood, growing up in poverty. When Cam agrees to return to Ashby House to help sort out the family problems, Jules feels hopeful. She might finally have a chance at a better life.
We also meet Cam's estranged relatives. When I say every character in this book is hiding something, I truly mean it. This book will keep you on your toes, trying to determine the truth. The author does a great job making the reader emphasize with the characters - I was definitely rooting for Cam and Jules!
I actually enjoyed the multiple POV's. They flowed super well and really helped to develop the mystery and plot. The ending was satisfying and well planned.

Rating (5/5) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for this eARC. A gothic , suspense thriller about an adopted son, who returns to his home in North Carolina, to deal with the aftermath of an inheritance he does not want. This one is by far my favorite book by Rachel Hawkins. This mystery is told in 3 different points of view (Ruby, Cam, and Jules) so many twists and turns. Couldn’t put this one down. Highly recommend it when it releases January 9th 2024.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARV of “The Heiress” by Rachel Hawkins. After devouring The Villa, I was excited to jump right into this one and it did not disappoint! This is one of those novels with a lot of unlikeable (on purpose) characters but a few that really pulled you over to their side by the end. Without giving too much away, I enjoyed the ending and how the different perspectives came together.
Thanks to NetGalley, I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a greatly written, clever, twisty novel revolving around secrets, money, greed, murder, & most of all family. What is it that makes family, well, family? I don’t want to give anything away so all I’m going to say is read this book!!! Hands down my favorite book of Rachel’s so far. 5 stars from me.
Pub date: Jan 9, 2024 (my birthday 😉)
Welcome to the world of the rich an powerful McTavish family, where drama, secrets and murder await.
Ruby McTavish has passed away, leaving her fortune and estate - Ashby House, to her adoptive son, Camden. After 10 years, Camden wants nothing to do with the McTavishes, but he’s forced to go back after Ruby’s passing.
Jules, Camden’s wife, is anxious to know more about Camden’s past. So Camden, hesitant to go back, takes her to Ashby House. Jules claims she didn’t know much about Camden’s past. But did she really not know?
The story’s told in dual POV - Camden’s and Jules’. Along some confession letters by Ruby. Fast pace and super entertaining. Suspense will keep you turning pages until you figure it all out!
Thank you St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC!
Rachel Hawkins has done it again. In the supremely dark and un-put-downable novel, we are begrudgingly taken to the mountains of North Carolina when Cam returns to his family home bringing Jules, his wife, along with him.
Cam has loathed his family and they, him. After his adopted mother, Ruby, dies, he cuts ties, doesn’t touch his rather large inheritance, and takes off to the other side of the country. But his cousin Ben has reached out ten years after Ruby’s death with a plea to come back home and help fix the house that’s fallen into disrepair. Still residing in Ashby, the stately home Can abandoned, are Nelle, Ruby’s younger sister, and her grandchildren - Ben and Libby. All freeloaders and the absolutely definition of white, wealthy privilege. While Cam has previously been able to ignore and delete all communication from his family members, this email from Ben sticks.
The story is told in present day alternating views - from Cam and Jules, letters from Ruby the year of her death, and various news articles about the McTavish family (specifically Ruby). I loved this concept as it kept my mind seeking connections between what we’d read in present day to what was being shown to us from the past.
The twists and turns in this book, while somewhat predictable, were a delight! The story as a whole is one I’ve never read before and I enjoyed imagining Ashby house and the land surrounding.
Great read! This book kept me on my toes and kept me guessing! I love Rachel Hawkins and I think this new book is one of her best ones yet. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
I’ve read everything by Rachel Hawkins & this might be my favorite!
Throughout the book, you truly don’t know who is good and who is bad- impossible to put down!
Somehow she made 3 POVs manageable- I truly loved this one!
I loved this! I devoured the story within a few days, indicating it was a great read. I enjoyed the premise and the multiple POVs that build up to the plot twists and the ending.
It was like a puzzle trying to figure out who each character was and what they did.
I enjoyed The Villa, and I am so glad I got the opportunity to read the advanced reader's copy of this book. Thank you Netgalley and St Martin’s Press for the eARC in exchange for honest review.
4.5 to 5 stars
A great suspense book with SO many twists. The story centers around Ruby McTavish who is kidnapped as a small child from an esteemed, wealthy family. As the story unfolds you learn of all the dark secrets of Ruby's life including her adopted son, Camden. Is a large inheritance always as good as it seems? This book kept me engrossed from the beginning with several twists I didn't see coming.
