Thank you St. Martin’s Press for my Netgalley copy of THE HEIRESS by Rachel Hawkins, out 1/9/24.
TALK ABOUT AN UNPUTDOWNABLE THRILLER! This may be the fastest I’ve ever read a book because I could not stop swiping. It is the Seven Husband of Evelyn Hugo meets the people of The Appalachia.
When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge mountains. In the aftermath of her death, that estate—along with a nine-figure fortune and the complicated legacy of being a McTavish—pass to her adopted son, Camden.
From there, we follow dual POV’s of Camden and his wife Jules as they head back to Appalachia after years away and secrets come to light. Slowly, we learn about Ruby’s kidnapping, her failed marriages and the lengths her bloodthirsty and money-hungry family will go to get what they think they’re owed.
The twists and turns are a mess of fun and it’ll have clutching your pearls as you flip the page!
This book is pure entertainment and I guarantee if you read it, you won’t want to put it down. Perfect for the beach, a lazy day in bed or sipping a beer at the bar by yourself.
Fast-paced, addictive, and full of ominous scenes, The Heiress will keep you hooked until the very last chapter.
Told from three points of view, we follow the life and tragic story of Ruby McTavish, the heir to the most elite family in Asheville, North Carolina. Ruby is notorious for being the victim of a kidnapping when she was three years old, and equally as known for her unluckiness in love. Married four times, each of her husbands died under mysterious circumstances. Of course, money talks, or in this case it silenced any investigations into the deaths.
The Heiress was an excellent read, full of complex characters and secrets. My first, and definitely not my last, novel by Rachel Hawkins.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book was fabulous! The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins has more twists and turns than the mountain roads the characters travel to arrive at the secluded Ashby house where family secrets will quickly unravel. I loved Rachel Hawkins' use of different narrators along with news articles to tell the story of the McTavish family. This is a page turner and the ending does not disappoint! Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and Rachel Hawkins for the advanced copy.
Thank you to NetGalley for this advanced reader copy. Rachel Hawkins did it again; another fantastic book that I couldn't stop turning the pages to. This book has a very intricate and intertwined plot that was delivered at the end with perfection! Loved it!
This is by far my favorite book by Hawkins. I really loved the three different points of view and the way the story was unraveled for the reader. Full of secrets that were slowly revealed, I didn't want to put this one down. I can't wait till January so some of my friends can read and we can discuss Ruby and the McTavish family. Thank you negalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
**More like a 2.5, but I digress.
I think Rachel Hawkins is just not the author for me. I haven't given any of her previous books above a 3-star mainly because the characters feel forced to me and I don't gel with the writing, and the same holds true for this book. I do think this is my favorite of her books so I'd say if you enjoyed her work previously this one might be a real hit for you.
Thank you to St. Martins Press for the ARC provided through Netgalley.
This is by far my favorite Rachel Hawkins book, I read it in less than 24 hours.
I loved the structure of this book. There were several different POVs, letters written by Ruby and newspaper articles. There were lots of twists and turns in this story and I enjoyed each one of them. This was a quick read in a beautiful setting, with interesting characters and a quick moving plot.
This was so freaking good! 6 stars if I could! I love love love this!! I seriously could not stop reading this and I'm still thinking about it days later!! Is one of my favorites of the year!!

OMG! What did i just read?? i flew through The Heiress in two days, reading it every chance I got. I figured out some of the story early on but it seems that it was written that way since you still didn't know the why. And the every end of the book, the last paragraph, i didnt see it coming. Maybe i should have but i didnt.
I like Rachel Hawkins books, and I think this is her best one so far!
Thanks so much for the ARC, NetGalley! Rachel Hawkins knows how to write suspenseful book - and her latest is no exception! I will always pick up her books to read. While I was slow to get into this book, by the time I was 25% in, I couldn’t put it down. I was captivated by the jumping timelines, the notes left by Ruby and trying to figure out where this book was headed. And that twist! I absolutely recommend this book to others.
I loved The Wife Upstairs by Hawkins and was super excited to read this latest release! Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced read copy.
The Heiress is family drama unfolding with lots of twists along the way. The writing style is makes it for an engaging read with the reader being spoken to throughout. We also get to read Ruby’s letters which, I have to say, we’re my favorite part of this book. I can just imagine if Ruby was sitting in a room telling these stories everybody around would want to stop and listen.
The unfolding of the story was a bit of a slow burn, but because the three point of views were so interesting to read the slow burn wasn’t a bad thing!
Gothic suspense at its finest! This tells the tale of a couple returning to the husband's crazy rich family--who he has shunned for decades. What is behind all the anger and mystery? Told in current POV and through letters, the reader begins to unravel the treachery that lives in Ashby House. The kicker is--do they stay or do they survive? Great, quick read. Rachel Hawkins always has the most twisty twists. Recommended.
3 1/2 Stars. This was my first Rachel Hawkins book though I do have one more on my shelf and a few more that I want to read. Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC of this book.
It was an intesting read. I enjoyed the way the chapters were set up and the way the book flowed. I wanted to keep reading to find out more secrets that the characters were keeping. I wanted a little more about the house as it seemed at the beginning that it would play a maybe bigger role that it did. All in all, a fun read that will keep you guessing.
I love the old money, creepy vibe of this book. Mysterious and alluring throughout. Each character with their own motives and secrets. Definitely kept me wanting to read more and find out what was hidden.
A thrilling book that keeps you turning the pages until the shocking ending. Full of twists and turns and shocks. Brilliant!’ I rate this book five out of five stars.
The his was a great book, I liked the dual point of views between Jules and Cameron with the addition of letters to a mystery someone and articles. Ruby was definitely something in her day. I’ll be recommending this one to friends.
I absolutely loved every book Rachel Hawkins has written and she didn't disappoint with this book! It was "on-the-edge'" of your seat book. I read it in one sitting. I would definitely recommend this book!
Rachel Hawkins is one of my “if she writes it, I’ll read it” authors, so I was super excited to receive an eARC of her upcoming book, The Heiress (without even requesting it—thank you Netgalley!!!). I’ve read all of Rachel’s recent books, and I love her work. There are no truly “good guys” in her books, but it’s not like Gone Girl where I hate every single character at the end. They’re twisty, soapy, and full of ambitious women who will stop at nothing to get what they want. The Heiress goes back and forth in time, from letters written by the titular heiress Ruby McTavish telling her story of her life and her four dead husbands, to the present time where her adopted son and his wife are dealing with the aftermath of her death and the will she left, as well as various shifty family members who reside in Ashby Hall, the McTavish family mansion. While I did figure out some of the plot twists, there were still some surprises, and I loved the subtle callback to her last book, The Villa (which I really enjoyed). If anyone has any suggestions for similar books from other authors, I’m all ears!
4.5/5 stars—will be coming out 1/9/2024, definitely recommend!!
I was so excited to receive a free Uncorrected Digital Copy of this book through NetGalley! Rachel Hawkins is an “automatic read” author for me, and this book didn’t disappoint. Get your copy in January, 2024!
The amazing Rachel Hawkins does it again! At this point anything she writes is an automatic yes for me because all her books are so good. This book had so many twists and turns it had me guessing until the last page. I loved how Ashby house became a character in the book all in itself and how all the different agendas left you suspense of where the story was going.
