I adore Rachel Hawkin's books that are written as Erin Sterling, but her thrillers tend to be hit or miss for me. This is the best one yet though! It kept me incredibly engaged and was a well written mystery! It reminds me quite a bit of Knives Out which will always be a selling point to me for any piece of media, and this did not disappoint! Looking forward to more of her thrillers if they keep in this direction!
Thank you to NetGalley the advanced reader copy of The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins.
The novel is more of a family drama compared to a thriller and is told from three points of view. The first is Camden (Cam), the adopted son of the richest woman in Tavistorck, North Carolina, Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore, who inherits her fortune and estate. Jules, Cam’s wife, provides the second point of view, while letters from Ruby provide the third.
Each chapter ends in a mini cliff hanger to suck you into reading another chapter. A totally fun bingeable, read!!!!
This book was just “meh” for me. I felt like I was reading it because I had to finish it instead of reading it because I wanted to finish it. I can’t quite put my finger on what it was.
Incredibly dark twisted thriller with a good pace and just the right amount of characters! I was drawn in by all of the secrets of the McTavish family and the mystery of the Ashby House. There is twists, there is drama, everything was well thought out and left me satisfied and blown away!
I am a HUGE fan of Rachel Hawkins. Every year, I wait with anticipation for her next book to come out. And The Heiress did not disappoint.
This was a fantastic story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the characters, the pacing and the story itself. I could not put it down and absolutely devoured it. LOVED it!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
For fans of Rachel Hawkins! This might be my favorite of her novels. The premise of this book is adopted son Camden McTavish returning to the Ashby home and estate owned by his adopted mother. Cam is hesitant to return as the surviving McTavish clan does not accept him or treat him well at all. However, his wife pushes him to return. Interwoven throughout the narrative are letters written by the late Ruby McTavish, outlining her life and specifically the deaths of her 4 husbands. This was a propulsive read that I flew through. It reminded me of the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This book is great for fans of Hawkins as well as Taylor Jenkins Reid. If you like suspense this will not disappoint!

Ahh oh my goodness I absouletly LOVED author @ladyhawkins newest thriller 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔. This is a fast paced, extremly addictive, domestic thriller that will keep you invested and intrigued until the final page.
The execution of this whole story was brilliant and so smartly written. We have constant narration changes, past and present timelines, and some chapters are solely diary entries which allowed for extra mystery. The twists were unpredictable and I honestly had no idea how this crazy story would conclude. All the characters were unique, and most unlikeable but in the best of ways! This is by far my favorite by this author, definitely will be one of my favorite 2024 reads- also how gorgeous is the cover?!
⁂ Special thanks to @netgalley @stmartinspress for the early copy. This book is available now! Synopsis in comments!

This was a good book. I kept picking it up, I finished it and overall I enjoyed it. However, it was very confusing to follow all the family ties and I did not go into it expecting it to be as much of a drama as it is; maybe that’s on me but it caught me off guard and not always in a good way.
The Heiress took me a little bit to get into, (the first 20% to be exact.) I kept reading though because I really enjoyed the last book I read by Hawkins. Let me say, I am so glad I did! The storyline picked up and moved very quickly after that. The characters are multifaceted and twisted, and the plot is interconnected in unique and sometimes alarming ways.
When Ruby dies, her adopted son inherits her assets. Surprisingly her son wants nothing to do with her fortune, and decides to leave and start over new. Years pass, and he receives a letter with the news of his uncle passing. The last thing he wants to do is visit, but his wife thinks it would be good for him.
Dysfunctional family, multiple POV’s, dual timelines and murder, what else could you ask for?
This book was read in one sitting, that’s how much I loved it! I couldn’t wait to figure out what was going on.
The Heiress tells the story of Jules and Cam as they maneuver going back to Cams ancestral home in North Carolina to handle Ashby House. Will it be as bad as Cam remembers?
I have been on the fence about Rachel Hawkins books to date. They have all been interesting but none of them really wowed me. This one wowed me big time! I freaking loved this story. The creepy ancestral home. The overbearing, corrupt, sickly wealthy family. It was amazing. I loved how I didn’t see all the twists and turning coming and how it just kept me guessing. The writing style was great with the letter format mixed in. It was a great story telling device and worked perfectly. I didn’t realize I could love such morally grey characters but I do! All the stars!!!
I really enjoy Rachel Hawkins books! They have so much mystery. The Wife Upstairs still remains one of my favorites, but this was a really good slow burn. There wasn’t anything about this book that was too 🤯. It was a nice slow burn thriller with lots of family drama.i was hoping for something more twisty but this was still good.
I really enjoyed this mystery novel from Rachel Hawkins. I found it to be more of a mystery than a thriller but it definitely kept me engaged and reading. I really enjoyed the letters that were included in the story and I loved how it contributed to the mystery. This was a very good book!
Trust Me, the dueling timeline stories of Ruby and Jules will have you racing to the end of this book.I like to think of it as a cross of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo with the dark humor of Chicago. Ideal for breaking a reading rut, thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC!
Ruby McTavish, a notorious heiress dies and leaves her fortune to her adopted son, Camden. Having grown up and always made to feel like an outsider by the McTavish clan, Camden escapes and starts a new life. However, Camden is forced to reckon with his past when he is summoned home to deal with the crumbling estate. This was terrific. I loved the different POVs; especially Ruby’s. Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC.
Camden and Jules are returning to Cam's home of Ashby House, a palatial mansion famous for it's infamous resident, Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore, known far and wide for her childhood abduction and the loss of her four husbands. Cam left this house in the dust, but the money in his name and the residents still occuping it pull him back. Little does he know, Jules has ulterior motives for wanting to see the house. What follows is a twisted tale of the past and the present and the lies we tell ourselves and others for money, for power, for love, for life.
Complicated, twisted, and featuring a gothic mansion? Count me in. Camden and Jules have what seems to be a beautiful, simple love, but underneath the surface something brims. Immediately readers are let in on the secret that Jules has ulterior motives for getting to Camden's childhood home. Through letters the truth is further revealed, who Ruby McTavish really was, and just what mess was left behind. It's a tale of money, the lengths we'll go to for it, and the ways lies rot us in our desperate attempt to win. This house truly has eyes and everything its seen is about to be revealed.
The cover! The premise! The execution. I was so excited for The Heiress and it was an incredible read, but it lacked the pace and fanfair I expected of it. I found myself not attached until about the halfway mark and while it won me over in the end, it wasn't the very best that I expected. I wasn't invested in the characters or truly hooked to their individual storylines the way I thought I'd be, considering a gorgeous mansion and a secretive past promised quite a lot of drama. It was the kind of book, for me, that I had to push through to get to the good parts. Ultimately, I enjoyed it, but I think had I not been a major fan of Rachel Hawkins already, I might've given up in favor of something that gripped me earlier on.
Once again, Rachel Hawkins does not disappoint. A tale of money, familial drama, murder, and mystery, the Heiress has so many twists, turns, and shocking secrets you would not have seen coming. I personally love multiple POV writing as you really get a fully immersive scope into the story. Family doesn't always mean what you think so keep an eye on the backstabbers!
The Heiress is my second Rachel Hawkins novel and she did not disappoint. Who exactly is the Heiress? Well it's hard to say, which is exactly what Hawkins wanted. This book is a duel POV between our fmc Jules and her husband Camden McTavish, the mmc, and the heir to the extravagant and mysterious Ashby mansion. But it's also the story of Camden’s mother, Ruby McTavish, which is told through letters that she was sending towards the end of her life. This is a thriller about family, secrets, and money. Nobody in this story is innocent and there really wasn't anyone I'd refer to as the good guy, but that just makes the narrative more interesting. All the main characters had layers that slowly got peeled away as more details were revealed to the reader. Alongside the interesting characters there's Ashby house itself which creates a dynamic environment for our story to take place. The pacing of this book was great, the characters were interesting, and the end still managed to leave you with one last question. Who really is the Heiress? Thank you smp and netgally for the arc!
I was hooked from the very beginning! The story was fast paced with short chapters, which really boosts a reader's confidence in completion ability. The creepy mansion, spooky mountains, and unexpected twists kept me up reading all night! This is a must-read thriller for 2024.
Thank you Netgalley. Rachel Hawkins does not disappoint!!! This was a bit of a "slow burn" mystery but well worth the wait. No one is what they seem and it's great watching it all unfold. Highly recommend
