Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper was a very slow burn. The first chapter nearly turned me off to giving this book a chance- there was SO much VOMIT. Just never-ending vomit. And it was a long first chapter- about 27 pages, if my math is correct. Most of the chapters in this book are really long, and I’m more drawn to short-chapter books, so that made this book harder to get through.

It took me about 10 chapters (or about 70%) before I started enjoying the story. For the most part, it wasn’t what I had been expecting. This story has a lot of over-the-top drama, Scooby Doo-type villains, and odd dialogue. Eventually, though, I began to enjoy the friendships between Riley, Caroline and Alice- oh, and Plover.

There is some romance in this story (and a surprisingly steamy scene), but I wasn’t completely sold on it. I didn’t really feel any chemistry or understand why they wanted to be together. The found family trope was where this story really shined.

I was also surprised to learn that she had been on the island for nearly a year by the end of the story. The passage of time wasn’t very clear, and that threw off the pacing of the story. Maybe I would have enjoyed the story and the romance a little more if there had been more “showing” than “telling” with the plot, and if certain parts had been more developed. The way the mysterious villain had been dealt with also kind of broke my heart.

If you enjoy the found family trope, though, and are looking for a witchy read with a small-town setting, you should check out this story. Just brace yourself for the first chapter (and all of that vomit) and maybe set your expectations low for the romance.

This is the perfect time of year for a book like this!

I have found that, for me, the "witchy" rom-coms are hit or miss for me, but I really enjoyed this one a lot.

It's really an opposites attract book with a fun cast of characters, some fun surprises, and some lovely examples of female friendships.

And as a Michigan native, I loved the setting!

A witch, a librarian, and a haunted house? Yes please!
This was very different from Molly Harpers other books, but it was a really good series opener. I hope we get to see Riley and Edison grow as a couple and figure out the mysteries of Shaddow House. I would very much recommend.

Witches Get Stuff Done is a sweet and cozy fun fall read full of magic. 3.5 stars

Our main girl, Riley Everett, travels to Starfall Point to learn that her long lost Aunt has passed away - and has left everything to her - including her very haunted house.

Add in a broody small town librarian meet cute, a coven of good friends, and a very proper ghostly butler? I’m sold!

I’ve generally loved Molly Harper’s paranormal romances, but this one didn’t entice me at all. It read like a first draft with bare bones that needed to be fleshed out. The conversations and character interactions were downright odd. They started from nowhere with random tangents and all of a sudden people were really good friends, without the reader being the wiser for why, as there were no inner monologue or clues to their expressions and actions. I couldn’t get behind the friendships forming between the women, the backbone of the story, at all.

We were told that Riley didn’t feel connected with her mother, but nothing showed of it, yet she was willing to change her life for it. And I get that Edison was handsome, but as a romantic hero he fell really flat. I didn’t feel the romance even a little. And since I’m not a fan of neighborhood busybodies, I couldn’t connect with that either. All in all, a disappointment.

Cute! That's about it. This read, while humorous and light, is completely unremarkable. I might pick up the next book in the series just because I liked the friend group, but the romance didn't capture me.

Witches Get Stuff Done is book 1 in the Starfall Point series. This book was a magical read that I did not want to put down. I’ve loved all the Molly Harper books I’ve tried, this one is no different.

Our leading lady, Riley Everett gets a mysterious invitation from an Aunt she knew nothing about to come visit. Once Riley steps foot onto Starfall Point though things change. Riley is locked into caring for the Shaddow House and its ghosts. Something she didn’t sign up for but something she was born to do. Add in that she now has magical powers and she can see ghosts and it’s an interesting journey.

What I really enjoyed about this book was the found family Riley gets as she befriends a few people on the island. The characters were lively and entertaining. We also get to learn along with Riley about her new job and abilities which I thought was a nice touch. I loved the paranormal and romance in the story and the mystery element was great as well. All in all, I really enjoyed this novel and would suggest it if you’re a fan of paranormal romance with a touch of mystery mixed in.

Review will go live on release day 9/5/23.

This is a witchy romcom perfect for the upcoming spooky season!
Riley has traveled to a small island in Michigan via Ferry where she has a not so meet-cute. with the sexy island Librarian, and finds out she has inherited a whole mansion... that happens to be full of ghosts.
I loved both Riley and Edison, they were both pretty adorable, along with the two side characters Riley's besties Caroline and Alison, and my favorite of the ghost we met, a butler that watches over her and helps when and where he can.

This is a fun quick read, it was heartfelt and had me laughing out loud. I will definitely be reading the other books in this series!

A cozy fun read, magic and romance, it was lighthearted and something I could breeze through within a few hours. Not much really stood out to me besides the fun relationship between the characters. Other than that it was an average witchy romcom that I feel would be fun for a cool fall day.

I am a big fan of witchy romances, and this one was an okay read for me. I found myself wanting to keep reading, but I also felt that the romance was just so rushed - it was 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. I enjoyed watching the girls' friendship and coven form, but it felt like there was sooooo much more that could be fleshed out and enjoyed in the whole story. I wanted more, and while I realize this is going to be a series, clearly, from the cliffhanger ending l, I just think some of it should have waited for the 2nd book so the author could give more bones to the romance and villians.

Witchy Romcoms either really work or really don’t.
This one worked for me.

Riley just learned she has an aunt that lives on a small island near Michigan. But when she gets to the island she learns the aunt just passed away and Riley inherits the aunts house and also finds out she is a witch that helps ghosts pass on.

The plot was so fun it didn’t necessarily need the romance but the romance was fun and I liked Edison- definitely insta-love. Teddy Hamilton is the mmc narrator ❤️

When does the next one come out?

Riley Everett never even knew her mother had a sister and now she's going to a small island in Michigan to meet the woman. But she is unexpectedly sick on the trip over and has no luck being able to use the toilet as Edison Held is hogging it. When he finally comes out, they quarrel but then she pukes on his shoes.
Both regret the interaction and are willing to get to know each other a little better. Which is good because Riley is dealing with some big changes in her life. Her aunt actually died right before Riley got to the island so she's alone in the big house. Well, except for the ghosts. Because there are ghosts. But we really only get to see a couple.
Soon Riley is getting to hang out with Edison, is learning more about her own powers, and is making friends who are also working with her.
There are a lot of parts missing in this story that I wish we had seen. More of Riley and Edison's growing relationship, more of Riley and her friends learning to use their powers, more time with Riley and her mom.

Three and a half stars

Riley's just inherited Shadow House, which has long fascinated Edison, She's new to Starfall Point and to being a witch who hunts ghosts- and Shadow House is filled with them. Edison, the local librarian, can and does help her. This is sorta rom-com, what with the opposites attract vibe that's conveyed through dual POVs, but it's also about harnessing your own power, whatever that might be. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. For fans of the witch-y genre it's a good read.

Witches Get Stuff Done is a delightful first in what is sure to be hilarious set of tales from Starfall Point. From inauspicious beginnings to barely holding her own Riley is sure to make you laugh and gigglesnort. She takes whatever life hands her and makes it work for her. I really got a kick out of this tale and look forward to the next adventure.

Opposites attract is a sure way to get me to pick up a book, add in some witchy aesthetic and I’m hooked! This was honestly so cute and quirky. I loved it so much! It’s a great fall read.

I'm generally a fan of witchy romances, but this one didn't do it for me. It felt rushed and the story between the main characters went full speed in no time at all. Overall it had the makings of a good witchy romance, but something about it just wasn't quite right.

Though I’m definitely a fan (in theory) of witchy romances, the way in which this book was written didn’t necessarily meet my expectations. Everything felt a little rushed, and the writing style felt kind of clunky and exposition-heavy. The romance had good bones, but went from 0 to 100 in the blink of an eye. Despite a really cool premise, I could not get through it without a fight.

I loved this adorable book so much! I feel like witchy rom-coms are quickly becoming my favorite genre. Just in time for October as well. Witches, ghosts, Victorian houses, libraries - what more could you want? I loved this book from start to finish, and couldn't wait to read more.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital ARC of Witches Get Stuff Done.

This cute witchy ROM com was a delight to read........a funny cast of mismatched characters and a underlining mystery to be solved and romance to be found makes this a great story to cozy up with this spooky fall season

This book took me so long to read because the further I got into it, the more I realized this was not actually a romance novel, nor did I feel like this fit with the program of Harper’s other books, which I have really enjoyed. This is the story of Riley, who moves into town because of her deceased mom’s estranged family leaving a home and a job to her.

I just don't understand--for a book about witches who act as a barrier between the living and the dead, why is death treated so unseriously? Everyone has faced incredible loss in this book (which even happens on page for some of the characters) and they all move on like it is nothing. Except for the hero who is (understandably) really messed up about the death of his fiance.

And then there is the fight these two had which was made up in the very next chapter, though us readers were told that a week passed in between. I don’t think I have ever been so emotionally unconnected to characters in a book in my life. This entire novel fell into the “telling instead of showing” problem of books.

Trust the cartoon cover on this one. If you want a cutesy witchy world building story, then this book is for you. If you want a rom-com about a witch and a librarian, then keep moving.
