The long awaited Hades saga!!! A Touch of Darkness was one of the first series that got me back into readying and I am forever grateful for that.
I LOVE the Hades sagas. Getting to see both sides to the story is fantastic, and the Hades saga always answers questions that I have from Persephone’s stories. A Game of Gods has been LONG awaited for me. I remember finishing A Game of Retribution the day after it released last year, and I haven’t been okay since.
This was everything I needed. It refreshed my memory on everything that happened, showed a side to the story that we were missing from Persephone, and not only did we get to bask in the glory that is Hades absolutely filthy mouth, we also got chapters with Dionysus and Ariadne?? Phenomenal. The amount of times a man asked a woman to crawl in this book had me absolutely feral.
I loved that we also got Theseus’ POV as well as Hades and Dionysus because I’ve been curious as to what has been happening and his chapters really answered all my questions.
Being able to dive back into this series really warmed my heart, and I am eternally indebted to Sourcebooks Bloom Books, NetGalley and Scarlett St. Clair for the early copy! Available July 25th 🫶
I really, really loved the other books in the series, especially A Touch of Darkness and A Game of Fate but for the life of me - I could not get into this book and I ended up DNF-ing it.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bloom Books for providing me with an E-arc.
I really liked the A Touch of Darkness series and while I did have a few issues with it I still have wanted to read the Hades Saga, so when I was approved for this arc I binged the first two in the series. I loved Hades’s POV more than I liked the original series. I really loved the extra depth it provided to all of the characters and especially in this book where we got Dionysus and Thesues’s povs in addition to Hades.
This book is Hades's and others pov of a touch of malice so it truly goes hand in hand with it. I truly can’t give a little blurb without spoiling 5 books so if you wanna read it please pick up the previous books in both the hades x persephone series and the hades saga.
I loved how this book set up a Touch of Chaos and I really do agree that you should read this book before that one. It adds more understanding to the war that is about to happen for that book. Theseus’s pov in this book helps to set up that side of the war more than we got in a touch of malice, and will be beneficial I think for the final book.
This whole saga really has made me love Hades more because we get to see all of the stuff he is doing in the background that persephone doesn’t know about and a lot of it she doesn’t know about for good reasons. It develops the world more and allows us to see so much more of the other gods.
I highly recommend this saga if you liked the main series or if you didn’t love it but want more hades action.
I was super excited to get an early copy of this book, this series holding a place in my heart as a die hard Persephone & Hades retelling fan. I've enjoyed the A Touch series so much, that it was no surprise how much I wanted to read the stories from Hades POV.
I will admit, when I was annoyed with Persephone as a character, it was nice to read the book in Hades perceptive to see what he was actually doing behind the scenes. This definitely made him a more loveable character to me.
This was a fun book, one that was a quick read and nice to be brought back to this world by Scarlett again.
Thank you NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
It was wonderful being back in the world of New Greece with Hades and Persephone! This series has become so nostalgic for me. I just love Hades & Persephone so much. This installment follows the events of A Touch of Malice, but from Hades' point of view, and it's the last in the Hades Saga of this series.
Getting Hades' side of the story in a full length novel is one of my favorite things about this series, too. He's such an enigmatic character on the outside, and sometimes even with Persephone, that being able to see directly into his mind and inner workings makes all the strife and worry and angst SO worth it. I also *loved* the additional POVs in this book! It added so much detail and depth to the plot. I loved the new relationship we got, too! Give me more!!!
As always, while this book is filled with god-related drama and discord, it's also infused with a passion that's desparate and powerful and true with endless pining and yearning and need and lots of spice. I lived for those moments between each of the couples in this segment. There's truly never a dull moment, especially for Hades. The ending is break-your-heart good and I am dying to find out what happens next!
This series is such a guilty please read for me and I cannot wait for Chaos to come out but simultaneously am sad it’ll come to an end soon. Given Malice is my favorite of the TOD series, I wasn’t too shocked to find that Game of Gods ended up being my favorite as well. I loved the new additions of Dionysus as well as more of the background to what Hades has been up to all during Malice. I love any types of battles so the yacht scene in this book and the parallel ending to Malice were highlights for me, Dionysus’ own personal quest that hints at a certain favorite epic of mine had me giddy, and the amping up to a huge battle to come leaves me perfectly hanging onto any last word or hints given about Chaos. November can’t come soon enough.
The FINAL installment of the Hades Saga is almost here yall! JULY 25th!
Scarlett does it again 🔥.
This story has multiple POVs which include Hades, Dionysus, and Theseus. I like the Hades saga because I enjoy seeing the other side, and his side of being a god and his day to day. So while this story is going to be very familiar if you’ve read ATOM, it’s cool to get a different light on the events. It was SCARY being in Theseus’s mind. He’s a crazy mother f*cker.
Anyways please preorder (many retailers are offering discounts on preorders). I do think you’ll want to read this one before Chaos comes out this fall…. 👀
I am so grateful to @read_bloom and @netgalley for the chance to read this advanced copy! I can’t wait for everyone else to read!
Thank you to Bloom Books and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC of A Game of Gods by
Scarlett St. Clair in exchange for a fair and honest review.
After reading the previous 5 books in the Hades x Persephone/Hades Saga series’, I can definitively say that Hades POV are always my favorite. I leave a month or more in between reading the correlating books, as to not allow Hades POV to feel repetitive, and it’s done the trick. I also have appreciated that Hades POV always adds an insight into the goings on in the background, and a plethora of new information. He interacts with many different characters compared to Persephone, so it has never felt stale. Thankfully, that was the case for this installment as well.
This book starts off right after the official engagement of Hades and Persephone. Unlike the previous two Hades Sage books, however, this book includes more than just Hades POV. A Game of Gods is told from 3 POV’s; Hades, Dionysus, and Theseus.
While I enjoyed the Dionysus POV, I believe that it would have made for a better spinoff novella, rather than a multi-chapter POV in this book. While it became an interesting POV and storyline as the chapters progressed, I found that it pulled me out of the main storyline a bit. This book is already quite long (nearly 600 pages), so it didn’t need this extra content. St. Clair does mention in the author’s note that Dionysus’s POV was used in this book due to it’s importance in the upcoming final book, A Touch of Chaos, but, in my opinion, it really do think it would have made more sense to have a slightly shorter book and a spinoff novella from Dionysus’s POV, instead of mashing them together. Keeping his POV but separating it into it’s own novella allows for the importance of his POV to still reach readers, without making this novel as disjointed as it felt at times.
Theseus’s POV chapters were quite sparse but packed a punch. While it was slightly intriguing to get a glimpse into his side of the story, his chapters were quite jarring, and I highly recommend that people check trigger warnings.
Overall, while the new POV’s added fresh perspectives and an interesting insight into some other characters and background plotlines, I don’t feel that they were completely necessary, and may have been better as future bonus content.
Strictly speaking on Hades POV, it’s interesting to me that we continue to learn a fair amount of information from him that is very much hidden from Persephone. He really does not keep her in the loop at all when it comes to the things he’s working on or dealing with. While that’s great for readers because we get more content, and it makes the books less repetitive, it looks very unhealthy for their relationship. I understand that Hades is fiercely protective of Persephone, but the relationship is thoroughly unbalanced when he expects her to be 100% open and honest with him and yet does not do the same for her whatsoever.
In this book, it is made abundantly clear that Hades and Persephone being together is not only causing Demeter (the dramatic b*tch that she is) to brutally retaliate, involving both humans and gods alike, but also many of the movements of the Triads are directly in response to the two of them being together. I know love conquers all but by this book I started to realize that they’re honestly being quite selfish. They have eternity to be together and will not take a step back for even a moment to help smooth things over with Demeter and the Triads. They act as though they are devastated by all the repercussions yet are having sex about 5 seconds later.
That all being said, I did enjoy this book. While it has obvious flaws, the story itself is entertaining and keeps you wanting more. I am definitely excited to finish out the series with the release of A Touch of Chaos on November 14th, 2023, especially because it will have both Hades and Persephone’s POV’s in one book.
**Received this book as an ARC through NetGalley**
This series has had a choke hold on me since "A Touch of Darkness" and that lovely hand neckless crafted by Scarlett continues. Getting Hades' point of view really makes this series irresistible for those who love Greek myth retelling especially Hades X Persephone. Glad this book gave the additional stories and POV of Theseus and Dionysus, especially with Hades really leaning into him sad, emo, and self-loathing during this book. Can't wait for A Touch of Chaos and the spin-off of this series.
I’m obsessed with this series! I was hooked from the beginning, and I think I like Hades perspective a bit more than Persephone’s. If you like this series, then you will enjoy this book as well. It is a satisfying continuation of the series. Highly recommend!
A Game of Gods is the final conclusion for the Hades side of Scarlett St. Clair’s most well known series.
I love Scarlett’s writing I have been reading this particular series from Hades and Persphones perspectives since she started releasing them. I was so excited to see when she announced she was going to do them from Hades perspective becuase I was always wondering what he was doing when she wasn’t around. So I am sad to see this ending.
While I know some people semi complain about some of the scenes being repetitive I gladly will accept it becuase I do reread and it is like rereading for me and the scenes are always spicy!!
This is by far my favorite Hades and Persephone series still to date.
I also really appreciated that more POV’s were also added into this book. IOVerall I really loved this and can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy
This was a solid 3.5 star out of 5 for me. I have read all the books in this series and have enjoyed each of them to varying degrees. Book one from Persephone's POV remains my favorite, but I have struggled a bit with the books from Hades' POV and I did struggle with this one.
I had yet to read A Game of Retribution when I started my reread of this series in preparation for reading this ARC. One thing that bothered me as I read through the series again and in order was the repetition of scenes, especially the spicy scenes. At times, that overlap felt tedious because the text itself was so similar and I caught myself skimming.
Where this book excels above the previous ones in the series is in the multi-POV approach. The added perspective of Dionysus and Theseus added a dimension to the story that I actually really enjoyed. Theseus is awful, but being aware of just how awful he really hints at the immense battle that Hades and Persephone will face in A Touch of Chaos. I do think we got a more thorough glimpse of Hades in this book as compared to the other two books from his perspective. He remains my favorite character in the series and the only major complaint that I have is that there was too much smut (I know that sounds nuts) instead of the deep dive into Hades character that I was itching for. It is for this reason that I have deducted stars. However, I am still very excited to read A Touch of Chaos when it comes out later this year.
Some things to note:
- Multiple POVs
- Lots of spice (like a lot, almost to the point of redundancy)
- Trigger warnings for death, violence, and sexual assault among other things
A huge thank you to Netgalley, Scarlett St.Clair, and Bloom books for the opportunity to read and review an e-ARC of this book.
Since getting the first book in the series on a whim at my Public Library I have been obsessed with all things Scarlett St. Clair and this series.
Book 3 has a couple different POVs, but the story is complex and a lot going on so its needed. This series offers the excitement of what's gong on in the Underworld and others realms. I enjoy both Hades and Persephone's books, but to me, Hades was much more exciting. Ive been a 20 something in college and the ins and outs of adulting. Please give me the make believe.
While Demigods are building a resistance, Hades and others are always a few steps behind. Demeter being angry about P&Hs engagement decide to wreck havoc on the weather. Creating snow storms and one massive catastrophe after another. Add in all the side missions, the book was long but I devoured every page.
St. Clair's spicy scenes never disappoint, and these were 10/10
I had 0 cares about Greek mythology until authors started putting romance to them. Now I am eating up every description of Monsters and begging for more. This is my favorite book in the series, and cant wait until the ending.
I read that Scarlett St. Clair has her MLS an MIS and it makes me love her even more. #librariansunite
Thanks to Netgalley and BLOOM books for the ARC
This is book 3/3 for Hades side of the series and ugh I am DESPERATE for the continuation of the main story. I thoroughly enjoy reading through Hades eyes and everyone else in this book. I love Ariadne and need so much more from her! The depths of the characters and the intricate world building makes this my top favorite of this series so far. I devoured this book within a day and seriously cannot wait until September for A Touch of Chaos!!!
Scarlett st Clair’s done it again! I don’t think there’s a book of hers I wouldn’t love! Hades POV is my all time favorite I love seeing inside his head and the two other pov in this book just tied in everything PERFECTLY!
**I received this book as an ARC through NetGalley**
Ok, so in my personal opinion, Scarlett St. Clair can do NO WRONG when it comes to her books/writing and A Game of Gods is no different. I have been waiting for Hades Saga part three patiently and it did not disappoint! I loved reading from Hades POV, even though he was falling apart during most of the book (for good reason). I really enjoyed Scarlett adding POV's from Dionysus and Theseus in this book. I thought it added a really good additional dynamic and context that was needed that we wouldn't have gotten just from Hades. The spice in this book was next level and there was so much, which was a huge positive for me as a reader. As a big Greek Myth fan, I feel like Scarlett does such a good job at bringing in all kinds of mythology- but it's not just thrown in- it has a purpose and it makes sense within actual Greek Myth and the story she has created. Just really really well done! A Game of Gods has set me up and I am READY for the last book in this series (coming September 2023), even though I'll be super sad when it comes to an end. I'd recommend this book and series to anyone- especially if they like a good Hades x Persephone retelling or Greek Mythology in general.
Spice rating: 4/5
Overall rating: 9.5/10
Thank you NetGalley and Bloom Books for the digital ARC of this. Also, please stay tuned for my therapy bill because I am UNWELL.
I just finished this, my brain is swirling, so please don’t expect some sort of polished or intellectually stimulating review. Because this is a trauma dump, oh my god what did I just read kind of review.
But in the best way.
This isn’t 5 stars, it is infinite stars. Every book Scarlett releases just gets better and better. She is a queen who cannot stop saying hold my beer and have her latest book be her best one yet.
This was amazing.
It perfectly depicted terrible mean who fuel and feed on suffering, but also those who go out of their way to help others. The POVs in this story are expertly done and give so much extra to the story. While it follows the same timeline (mostly) as A Touch of Malice, this gives you so much extra context and it is delightful to read the story from these new viewpoints. It makes you hate the villains that much more and learn more about characters you love, new ones, and you get deeply invested in every subplot.
Hades and Sephora develop such a healthy relationship through mistakes, blunders, hurtful moments and it makes their wedding that much sweeter. Even though I experienced it once through her POV, it was amazing to get it through Hades’ as well. And I also really liked about how in situations where ATOM gave us a lengthier storyline, she knew when to keep it simple for Game of Gods. Gods, she really is a master.
This was incredible. I can see how it is a must read before the next book. But I’m also not ok. It was such a powerful but still traumatic ending, despite having an idea that it wasn’t going to go swimmingly.
Anyway, I’m going to need a lot more therapy but you should definitely read this.
The magic in this book is in the set up. Stick with me here....A Game of Gods is long. Like SSC said "this one is LONG" But every word and every scene has meaning. Every thing that you are so annoyed at Hades for doing and every seemingly random side plot is part of an intricately woven set up for whatever madness she has in store for us in Chaos. I read Gods much slower and more carefully that I have her previous books and I am super glad that I did. I needed to slow down and catch all of the details. I also needed a lot of support because this cliffhanger is a doozie.
This book was interesting. Although I have followed this saga from the very beginning, i actually thought that the last Hades saga book was my favorite. What i loved about the series -- seeing what was going on behind the scenes for Hades--was really missing in this part of the story. Many scenes were just Hades POV of the same scenes as in the corresponding Persephone book and felt more redundant than interesting. The other books in the series felt so much like a whole other story happening behind the scenes and seeing the moments where we missed huge things in Persephone's POV made it into a completely different but complementary story. Unfortunately, this one missed the mark a bit for me. I'm still excited for the conclusion of the series.
I absolutely devoured A Touch of Darkness series, and this is Hades series. There were parts where this felt almost like a reread, but I ended up loving Dionysus and Ariadne chapters and wished we had more from other perspectives. There are a lot of intricate moving parts, and we get to see more about Demeter vs Olympus vs Impious/Triad. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish there was less smut and more character development.
