This is another wonderfully enlightening text from Rabbi Jason Sobel. I have enjoyed his previous books as well as this one. I liked it so much I bought a copy of it and the study guide and am following the videos that go with it. The author works through the miracles of Christ expounding on the meanings in the verses and the cultural significance of the events as they happened. It is a look into life as it was in Jesus' times. It is an unique perspective from a Messianic Jew . He is the spiritual advisor to the Chosen TV series and leads tours in Israel.
This is a very exciting book and an enjoyable read.
Have you ever wondered how the Old testament points to Jesus, but wasn't sure how? Well have I got a book for you to help you understand that, and to draw you closer to the Savior as you read it! The book is the latest from my favorite Rabbi, Rabbi Jason Sobel, called Signs and Secrets of the Messiah! Rabbi Jason takes signs that Jesus performed, and explains them, and how they the into the Old Testament, because the Old Testament was written to point to Jesus! I highlight key points that speak to my heart in all my books that I read, and I read a ton, and literally, I have highlighted most of this book! So I highly recommend this book, because it really made the Old Testament come to life, helped me to understand why Jesus did the miracles He did, and helped me to have a deeper understanding of God's word, which made me want to read more! This book helped me to dig deeper into the Word, but did it a way that I could easily understand, and relate to in my life!
The first miracle he explains is why Jesus turned water into wine, and I learned how it tied into the Old Testament, and how it showed that Jesus is indeed the Messiah. I learned more about Jesus thru every sign and miracle Rabbi Jason talked about, and it has made me fall more in love with my Savior, and helped me to be confident that He is the Messiah, the Savior of the world!! Because of all I have learned through this book, I love Him even more because the Holy Spirit has helped me have a deeper understanding of His word! (And that's my prayer for you if you read this book!)
I am so thankful to Rabbi Jason for writing this book, and explaining what the Lord has revealed to him so I could draw closer to my Savior, and also I can share what I am learning with others. So this gets a 5 out of 5 stars, or a zillion out of a zillion stars as a rating, and this book is one I am going to be studying for a long time!!! Highly recommend it!!
Signs and Secrets of the Messiah was a very informative book. I was especially interested in this book because of the author, Rabbi Jason Sobel, his other works, and from his position of advisor on The Chosen (a multi-season series about the life of Jesus).
I have been doing a lot of reading and studying about the context and customs shown in the bible from the Jewish perspective and I am truly fascinated. There so much richness, fullness, and reverence that we often miss or downright dismiss in Christian terms or summaries.
The book reviews 7 miracles of Jesus recorded in the book of John and shows connections throughout the bible, meanings in Hebrew and the numerology associated with the Hebrew language. There is so much to contemplate that at times it was overwhelming. I was interested and at the same time lost. By the time multiple meanings, connections, and numerical significance was shared I had forgotten the original premise. It helped that there were summaries at the end which brought everything around.
I do recommend this book but add caution that it is not an easy read. Give yourself time to study a section slowly and don't worry if you feel lost. You will see connections and learn more about the Bible and its teachings if given a chance.
I enjoy Rabbi Jason Sobel's books and insights into Jewish thought and history. His joint effort with Kathie Lee Gifford, _The Rock, The Road, and the Rabbi_, was a fascinating study, and I have revisited the book several times.
Sobel and I approach the Christian faith differently on a few levels: he is Jewish, I am not; he is continuationist, while I lean cessationist. But I come away learning, or at least thinking about, new things when I read his writings.
This was an interesting one, as expected in light of the above. Sobel comments early on that he focuses on the 7 miracles of Jesus recorded in the book of John--along with a couple others because he didn't want to limit it to just those. It was still a bit unclear _why not_, and it seemed like if he was going to call that out, the whys/wherefores should be fleshed out too--but alas, it was not to be. A few other statements or examples in the book could also have merited some additional fleshing out for further gravitas or connection that I simply couldn't grasp.
A fair bit of numerology is included as well, heavily focused on the Hebrew. As the NT was written in Greek, this would be another great opportunity for Sobel to flesh out the whys/wherefores of solely Hebrew inclusion--but it was still interesting. Again, this is something we don't experience in the English language, and it is a fascinating added layer.
So, a bit of a mixed bag for me, but I appreciated the opportunity to read/review.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The title caught my eye and I am glad I decided to read this book. If you are looking for your next non-Christian book then you need to grab this one.
I highly recommend this book.
I received a copy from Netgalley for my honest review.
Signs and Secrets of the Messiah is a book working through the miracles of Jesus as told in the book of John from the perspective of a Messianic Jewish person. This book was so illuminating on the culture of the audience the Bible was first written to.
The fact that Jesus came with a message for Jerusalem is not contested, but very often, I think people of a gentile background miss the Jewishness of the Messiah. Rabbi Jason Sobel was born and raised Jewish before he came to know Jesus Christ as the Messiah, and so he has a very unique perspective of being among those whom Jesus came first to save. He notices details that seem minor or unimportant to the Christian, but to the Jewish reader, communicates truths and makes connections deeper and more profound than the average Bible reader today might uncover.
From the perspective of the gentile Christian - the numerology sometimes left me behind. I’ve studied the Hebrew alphabet and was familiar with the way words can often be used to communicate numbers, so that wasn’t startling or bewildering to me, but I think a primer in the appendix might be helpful where each of the letters with its corresponding number might be found. Additionally, in many places, the author does the work of both translation and numerology for the reader and I think it would have been helpful for me to see it in Hebrew for the numerology and THEN translated. Some of the connections did seem to be a stretch for me because in English, there didn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason for why these four words put together to equal 40 are compared to this one word that equals 40. Hebrew is such a rich language that I think seeing the translations written beside their Hebraic origins would have aided in the lessons hitting home to the Christian audience.
Overall, I enjoyed the opportunity this book provided to engage in the Bible from another cultural perspective. It was a fascinating discourse on the miracles in the book of John through the lens of the original Jewish audience and why thats good news for the modern Messianic Jew and Christian.
I’d like to thank Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
