Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers for providing this electronic advanced copy for review!
I have loved both of Lynn Painter’s previous YA books and this one was no exception! The banter was fun and witty and at times I was squealing with joy. It’s a fluffy light read that also has real heart, dealing with some topics of anxiety, family, and divorce.
Overall very well written and super enjoyable!
I couldn’t believe this book was sitting on my NetGalley shelf! I might have screamed!
Betting on You by Lynn Painter was impossible to put down YA romantic comedy.
I’m finally convinced Painter can write no wrong! And no one can convince me otherwise. I am a big fan of Lynn’s books because she always takes a romcom & gives it even more than you would expect.
Every aspect was so good and so well written.
Very well written. Excellent storytelling, pacing, banter and dialogue.
My gosh Charlie and Bailey were swoon-worthy.
This was one of those books I didn’t want to stop reading.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers for the opportunity to read this ahead of its publication date in return for my honest review.
A beautiful and exciting story! I loved the characters and was rooting for them the whole time. A must read!
Betting on you was a fun YA read! The characters came to life on the page and it was a good balance of lighthearted fun with heavier topics of divorce, family, and trust. I would definitely recommend this book to readers in high school and older.
I swear Lynn Painter can do no wrong. While Better Than The Movies rains supreme, Betting on You was unputdownable. Painter's characters are always fun and easy to root for. This story is the definition of "you came?" "you called" and I was HERE FOR IT. I cannot wait to get a physical copy for my shelves.
Betting on You is a great enemies-to-lovers novel that unfolds over the course of several years. I loved the setting where the characters finally meet again, and the emphasis on dealing with parental divorce was also new and fresh.
Betting On You is a YA romantic comedy perfect for fans of books like Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, What I Like About You by Marisa Kanter, or The Upside of Falling by Alex Light. Themes or topics present include life after divorce, dealing with change, anxiety, germaphobia, love and heartbreak, growing up, loneliness and isolation, family, and companionship.
Betting On You is a cute and cozy teen/ YA romance with some light spice and quite a few swoon-worthy moments; there were even some adorably cute and swoony moments involving a rescue cat! This book was clearly written with Swifties in mind; not only was there a ton of low-key Taylor Swift references there was also a love interest that is secretly a Swiftie and an impromptu sing-along to the 10-minute version of All Too Well. The plot of Betting On You has similar vibes and many of the same tropes as Painter’s beloved YA romance Better Than the Movies including enemies to friends to lovers, fake dating, and forced proximity; so fans of Better Than the Movies should definitely pick-up a copy of Betting On You! Throughout Betting On You, the main character, Bailey, deals with a lot of anxiety as a result of current and impending big changes in her life; I thought that this was very relatable and relevant as I feel like most people, including myself, have also had anxiety about a big change happening at some point in their lives.
On the downside, I wasn’t sure that all the backstory at the beginning of the novel, detailing Bailey’s first meetings with Charlie, was entirely necessary. This preamble also meant that it took longer to get to the main action of the book, which makes it harder for me to get invested in the plot. Even though both main characters were struggling with anxiety throughout the novel, it seemed like Charlie was the one who was constantly trying to ease Bailey’s anxieties while Charlie’s worries were almost ignored, which seemed unfair.
Even though Betting On You was hard to get into, I ended up finding it quite enjoyable and swoon-worthy. I would highly recommend Betting On You to fans of YA romances, especially those with fake dating, opposites attract, enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, and/ or forced proximity tropes.
If you're looking for a sweet and swoon-worthy young adult romance, look no further, Betting on You is just the book you are waiting for. This enemies to co-workers to more romance answers the age-old question, can men and women really be just friends? With easy to relate to situations and characters, and explosive chemistry, this story is not to be missed. If you're a fan of young adult rom-coms, I highly recommend checking this book out!
This was SUCH a delightful new Lynn Painter romcom—the build of the romance was perfect (from annoyance, to friendship, to HOT DAMN CHEMISTRY), and the set pieces were delightful (an only-one-bed situation, a weekend trip, fake dating for jealousy, "oh no it was a bet"...). Heartwarming, silly, sexy—everything you could want in a romance, as we've come to expect!
I can’t actually tell you if Lynn Painter is a Swiftie but there is a lot of references and straight up lines about her so if you wanna read for just that reason, you’re golden.
This was a very cute coming of age romance in which Charlie and Bailey see if boys and girls can be friends without it being more. I really enjoyed it for what it was and had a good time, despite Bailey being annoying with the whole “I don’t like this guy my mom is dating because my dad is a dick” thing.
I wish we got more Charlie in general, but especially more of his family. I wanted to see how they influenced him. In all, another hit by Lynn Painter.
Who else would have set a book in a hotel waterpark other than Lynn Painter? Also, there's nothing better than an airplane meet-cute (well, less than cute).
Like all of Lynn's books, Betting On You brought so much joy. I don't read a lot of YA, but I always love hers! She does a perfect job of balancing romance with young love--you can believe in the relationship, and even if it doesn't last forever it's a romance the characters could grow from.
Bailey and Charlie had great chemistry and their banter was a blast to read. I loved the enemies to lovers trope and dual POV.
I have dove into Painter's books over the past year and have to say Betting on You is one of her best pieces of work. The character development and story line is perfect for any YA lover. You will meet Charlie and Bailey, where chapters are told from their perspective. Like many teens they struggle with questions like: Does this human like me? We are friends so if we change into something more will I crust the friendship? Is it worth it? Painter also tackles teens struggling with divorce and the concept of the family. I am so glad NetGalley sent me an early copy. I devoured the pages slowly because I was internalizing what was going on. Thank you Lynn Painter for putting this story into the universe!
Lynn Painter has won my whole heart and soul with this book. I didn't think I'd find another couple that I loved more than I loved Liz and Wes, but I'm now absolutely obsessed with Bailey and Charlie. I love that both of them are flawed and are working through the complexities of what it is to be human. Five out of five stars.
The last two Lynn Painter books I read were 5 * reads, but this unfortunately, was not.
I did enjoy the nods to When Harry Met Sally, as that is a favorite of mine. And I appreciated in the third act conflict, when Bailey let Charlie sweat it out. She finally learned how to stand up for herself and do what was best for her, which was a nice full circle moment.
But while It was still a fun time, I didn't connect with the characters very much, and some of the plot felt scattered and underdeveloped. There were several side characters that were added for *plot* but we still didn’t know much about them at all. Even Bailey and Charlie - his health issues are incredibly vague, and her bookstagram account seemed to be a central part of her life, but we are never given much information about it.
After two five stars, maybe my expectations were too high going into this? for the record - I will still continue to read anything Lynn writes.
Lynn Painter does not disappoint! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and if it doesn’t end up as a movie it will be such a shame. Charlie and Bailey are so cute together, a classic and beautifully developed enemies to friends to lovers. I also loved that they had the parents dating/divorce thing in common. Baileys feelings about her moms boyfriend, Scott, were so spot on it took me back to my teen years. And her mom, loved her. Every relationship in the book was so well done. Thank you so much to Netgalley and Simon Schuster for the advanced copy.
Lynn Painter does it again. I read this in one sitting. The story is so cute and the writing just flows, so you are halfway through the book before you know it. This was the perfect cute rom com read with just enough serious stuff going on! Loved these characters and this story. I’ll miss the banter!
Thank you to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to read this e-arc. This book was amazing!
Lynn Painter has proven once again that she is the queen of both adult romance and YA romance. Bailey and Charlie were so cute and the circumstances in which they continue to meet are hilarious. It definitely reminds me of the idea that sometimes fate will just throw you together with the person you are meant to be with.
Bailey and Charlie have an incredible chemistry from the get go. From the moment we meet them, it is clear that they have some serious chemistry. Charlie is such a paradox with his endless cynicism for love and relationships but his sweet side definitely trumps it. It’s clear that he is a cinnamon roll of a guy who absolutely gives 100% of himself to those he cares about.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Lynn Painter is a goddess and I simply cannot get enough of her books, especially this one and I wish I could read this one for the first time again.
Lynn Painter doesn't fail with her books. Loved every part of this book and can't wait to read more of Lynn writing
Betting On You comes out in November and it is not to be missed! Charlie and Bailey’s relationship is completely adorable. From all of their inside jokes and cutesy moments, it makes it so easy to root for them. Plus Lynn Painter’s ability to slide in so many pop culture references creates an even better read! Keep your eye out for this November 28th release and be prepared for a fun ride
I've really enjoyed Lynn Painter's novels so when I saw she was writing a Young Adult novel, I was intrigued. As a 31 year old, YA isn't usually my jam except for specific authors/books and Lynn Painter definitely cemented herself as one of them with Betting On You!
The story centers on Charlie and Bailey as they navigate changes in their families and their own break-ups. They make a bet about friends and begin to become friends after a couple negative first encounters.
Charlie and Bailey are so sweet and you have to root for them, even as you see them making classic teenager mistakes and assumptions.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to teens AND their parents, which is rare!
