This memoir was a rollercoaster. The first half was about her wild, free-spirited, determined coming-of-age with a complicated relationship with her family. The second half was about love, heartbreak, and adventure. A triumphant tragedy was the constant theme. I enjoyed the beginning more than the last half and the Christianity part lost me at the end.
"Paradise Road" is just that...a road of a life.
It is the authors life story...until now.
Marilyn has led an interesting one too! Teenage rebellion, deep love and even deeper loss. Physical and emotional journeys...I loved the travel aspect of her story.
Such a warts and all telling in intimate detail and I believe any female especially, could relate...I certainly could. Our young twenties are such "lived" times, as we try things, push boundaries, suffer defeats, love, run, re-invent ourselves over and over.
My journey has not taken me to the same destination as Marilyn's but it is great to see she has found the missing purpose and peace. I'm going to be honest in that I 'speed read" the last 15% of the book though as the deep and meaningful didn't resonate as much with me.
Thanks to NetGalley, Lucid House Publishing and Marilyn Kriete for my copy to read.
It might just be me but I honestly didn’t enjoy this book at all.
When I read the description it’s sounded really interesting however it’s like one of those movies where all the good bits are in the trailer…
The benefit however is the fact the book could be considered a light read due to it being less than 200 pages
I finished reading Paradise Road in preparation to read an advanced copy of Kriete's latest book and I have to say - I cannot shake the profound disappointment in the ending of this book. I realize that it is a memoir and Kriete is sharing her story, but it was so shocking to me. I have no idea that her story would take the turn that it did and frankly, I wouldn't have bothered with the book if I did. I'm not really looking forward to reading her forthcoming memoir but hoping that perhaps she shares more changes.
Paradise Road is an immersive and candid memoir of the author. Very wise, relatable and emotionally driven and would definitely recommend!
Thankyou to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Thank you for Netgalley for giving me an opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
I am always amazed and inspired when I hear stories of people who turn a heartbreaking time in their life and use it to create something positive from it.
Engaging, and inspiring, Marilyn makes you feel a part of her winding road of self-discovery. At times heartbreaking and unflinchingly honest.
