I loved this book by Jen Turano! Jen is one of my favorite authors. I love her wit and humor. I also love how unique each of her main female characters are and how they don’t fit the typical mold. I loved Adelaide and her ability to get into some funny scrapes. I also loved her love of cats since I am also a lover of cats and could see myself doing some of the things she did to rescue them. I found myself laughing a lot while reading this story. I also loved how Adelaide was able to win Gideon over just by being her quirky self. I would recommend this book.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Adelaide has a propensity for trouble which has Gideon positioning himself to be of assistance to her. When her attempt to help him goes haywire, he comes up with a plan to restore her reputation.
I wanted to enjoy this book because I'd liked the first one in the series, but couldn't get into it. The situations the characters got into were implausible and lacked the usual humor of a JenTurano novel.
I liked that Adelaide was eventually appreciated for her unique self and the way Gideon protected her.
Readers of To Spark a Heart will be reminded that it is God who takes care of us.

en Turano's To Spark a Match offers a delightful journey into the gilded age of 1888 New York, blending humor, romance, and mystery. Protagonist Adelaide Duveen, a self-proclaimed spinster with a love for cats and books, finds herself thrust into a world of espionage and intrigue when she encounters the enigmatic Gideon Abbott during a dinner party. The chemistry between Adelaide and Gideon, coupled with the author's clean and witty dialogue, creates a charming narrative filled with quirky situations and unexpected twists. Turano's ability to seamlessly weave humor, romance, and mystery is evident in the banter between characters, the inclusion of intriguing supporting characters, and the gilded age setting. Adelaide's refusal to conform to societal norms and her commitment to authenticity make her a relatable and endearing protagonist. To Spark a Match is a highly recommended read for historical romance and romcom enthusiasts.
To Spark a Match is a thoroughly fun read. Adelaide is not much interested in meeting society's expectations. That's just as well because she frequently finds herself in situations that mortify her mother. She's not trying to be inappropriate, but somehow these things just happen to her. Not to mention that she loves books. And cats. Neither of which are all that popular with the "proper" set. This all adds up to the perfect set-up for a plot line reminiscent of My Fair Lady. Can Adelaide manage to present herself as a proper lady long enough to get a husband?
The hero is a "former" intelligence agent which adds an element of espionage and intrigue to the story. Of course, he's not a matrimonial prospect. He's just a concerned friend.
By the way, would anyone like to adopt a cat? Adelaide has more than she can handle... and would love to find homes for some of them.
Lots of humor and fun details. A delightful read!
I've read one book by Jen Turano before and I loved it. So I was really excited to get to read this one. And it was so good! I love the way this author takes a stuffy time or situation and brings the humor into it. She does such a great job with that.
Adelaide is our main character. I had to laugh at her antics. Her mother would love to see her married. But Adelaide is always in a crazy situation. And she ends up being shunned by society for some of her crazy stunts. Adelaide made me laugh so hard. I love the situations she got herself into. And I loved that she loved books as well! She was definitely an original.
I liked the way Gideon goes out of his way to help Adelaide, with pretty much everything. He finds someone to help her repair her reputation. And he watches out for her when she is in danger. Which is an awful lot. I really loved that he allowed Adelaide to be herself and didn't insist that she change to be what society wanted her to be.
There are so many great side characters in this one. I loved Adelaide's cousin Charlie. And her cats! As well as Camilla. I really hope to see more stories in this world soon.
Jen Turano is a favorite author! I love her hilarious, romantic, madcap books. To Spark a Match is one of my favorites.
I loved Adelaide! She’s a smart, kind, resigned spinster, & definite cat & book lover. She also has a habit of finding trouble. If there’s danger, fire, intrigue, or mystery, she’ll stumble into it.
Gideon Abbott feels responsible for Adelaide ever since she saved his case & embarrassed herself in front of Society. He tries to help her by enlisting his matchmaking friend to take her in hand. But, though Gideon tries to hide his profession from Adelaide, she’s his equal at every turn & quickly discerns his true profession involving herself in his case.
I loved Gideon! While he wants to help Adelaide, he doesn’t want to “change” her. He loves her just the way she is. If only she didn’t wind up in so many accidental, dangerous situations. I loved how she turns his world upside down from getting him to take a darling kitten named Harvey to helping him with his case. He just needs to learn to trust her intelligence & ability to help herself. I loved his secret room of weapons & gadgets.
Filled with laugh out loud humor, romance, a mystery full of twists and turns, and the craziest of situations, this gilded age charming book definitely warmed my heart and kept me chuckling. It’s a lighthearted, enjoyable read that’s perfect for a cold fall day. Highly recommend to historical romance & romcom fans. Though part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.
I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.
Mystery, romance, intrigue...that is what you can expect to find in this book! Adelaide is ready to accept that she will be a forever spinster, especially after 5 seasons with no success in finding a husband. Gideon finds her in a precarious situation after she helps him with one of his investigations, and he feels driven to help her in society.
"'Once again I find myself wondering how you're still alive,' Gideon said, moving to join [Adelaide].
'Perhaps the nine lives my cats posses have rubbed off me.'"

Overall its a great read and was so fun to be in New York during the guilded age. Thank you to the author for the advance copy of this book. A positive review was not required.
Turano may be my all time favorite author. She writes amazing stories full of quirky characters and lots of fun. Adelaide is a wonderful woman. She cares for stray cats and is kind to everyone. She loves books about spies and enjoys adventures. Gideon always seems to be on hand when she sets herself on fire or gets into some other kind of trouble. He sees the real beauty in Adelaide. I love when someone can see beyond society's expectations to what really matters.
There's a solid mystery and lots of fun interactions and witty lines. It's a great book and I can't wait to read the next in the series. Thank you to Bethany House for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
"Jen Turano has penned another excellent piece.
Having read the first book in the Matchmakers series by Jen Turano, I knew that I had to read the second book in this series. I expected a book with witty characters and plot scenes that would make me laugh. I was not disappointed.
Set in the Gilded Era, Jen Turano’s To Spark a Match is a novel about a quirky, socially awkward woman, Adelaide Duveen, who is considered a wallflower by the high society in New York. Gideon Abbot is a private investigator whose path crosses with Adelaide. The beginning of the novel is enough to get readers' attention with the mishap of Adelaide.
What begins as an inconvenient meeting soon blossoms into something more than friendship for Adelaide and Gideon. I enjoyed the characters in this novel. Jen Turano has a talent for creating characters who stay with you long after reading her novels. The addition of mystery and a bit of suspense—a signature of Jen Turano—was well incorporated into this novel, adding to the delight of reading it.
To Spark a Match has themes of standing out to be different, respect, mystery, and a touch of knowing one’s true value. I will highly recommend this novel to someone who loves cats, wants a good laugh, and wants a good dose of romance.
I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House through NetGalley and Interviews & Reviews for my honest opinion."
Jen has done it again. I laughed and giggled my way through this story, and I loved every minute of it. Adelaide and Gideon are perfect at banter and their chemistry is off the charts. This story charmed me completely! A perfect read for me.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and also purchased my own Audible copy. All thoughts are my own.
From the very start of this story Adelaide and Gideon deal with unique and funny circumstances. I really enjoyed the sweet romance and affection that developed between them. The author always throws animals in the mix and I so enjoyed that in this book, particularly Gideon’s interactions with them. This story also had an interesting mystery complete with spies and a room of weapons. The banter between characters was fun, if a little bit drawn out, but I did giggle a few times wading through the quick comebacks.
I received this book complimentary as a member of the author’s launch team. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are honest and my own.
To Spark a Match is book two of Jen Turano’s highly engaging The Matchmakers, series.
Readers of Turano’s will not be surprised to learn the story starts with quite the scene and continues through an hilarious set of highly improbable events. But they aren’t impossible events, and these are Jen Turano characters. So there’s going to be mayhem.
This time, Camilla has stepped away from matchmaking and instead is trying to restore the reputation of Adelaide, while Adelaide is busy trying to get Gideon to hire her as a spy. And Gideon is busy trying to ignore that he’s falling in love.
The sweetest part about this book is that both main characters believed they were heading for the single life, so are taken aback when love finds them. Especially in a series of ‘situations.’ As ever, the story contains a lot of witty banter. Turano is virtually unparalleled in this type of dialogue. And while the story is somewhat lighthearted, what with all the shenanigans, bigger issues are deftly handled.
I highly recommend this story to lovers of witty historical romance. I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley, the longstanding love of Jen Turano stories is all my own.
Just when I think Jen Turano has written the funniest book, she writes another one.
The mixture of Adelaide needing to secure a husband or remain a spinster forever, along with questionable characters in this mystery, adds all kinds of hilarity that Jen Turano is known for. Reading and attempting to quietly giggle so as to not wake one's husband is a definite problem when one reads a Jen Turano book at night.
Witty conversations, and lengthy scenes because Adelaide does tend to prattle on a bit. But it seriously makes the book even more fun!
A Jen Turano novel is one that I gravitate to when I'm looking for something to lift my spirits and this book did not disappoint.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Have you read any of Jen Turano's books yet? Or maybe the better question would be, how MANY of her books have you read? She has such a wonderfully unique way of writing! Her books are hilarious and witty and SO fun!
I loved the mystery in this book, and Adelaide was delightfully...problematic. Not that she sought problems out; they just seemed to find her, and in the most amusing of ways! And Gideon was the perfect complement to Adelaide's personality.
If you are literally giggling as you read, you know it's a good book! And I giggled. A LOT.

After reading several really heavy novels, To Spark a Match was the perfect lighthearted read. Jen Turano's quirky, Gilded Age, romantic mysteries are always delightful. Mr. Gideon Abbott, a member of the Four Hundred, strives to balance his place in society, his secret occupation, and participating in a plan to reintroduce a new and improved Miss Adelaide Duveen into society. Adelaide's penchant for finding trouble and her working her way into his heart makes finding and keeping that balance a difficult proposition. Author Jen Turano's ability to turn a phrase and her sparkling sense of humor combine to give her reader abundant smiles and chuckles. Her ability to plot an interesting mystery with well-paced developments keeps readers fully engaged with the story. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a truly fun read.
I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of To Spark a Match from Bethany House Publishers via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.
If you need to buy a gift for someone or for yourself, you cannot go wrong with this book.
Completely entertaining in the mad rush that Jen is known for, as well as a perfectly written romance. Adelaide has the wonderful traits of being unique in the Four Hundred, beautiful without knowing it, a caring heart, brilliant observant mind, and a love for books and cats. She's not afraid to look through it all and enjoy the commonplace, and always lands on her feet, which is fortunate, since she gets into some real mishaps. Handsome Gideon comes to her aid and gets involved, finding she's more competent than he thought and a diamond of first water. Always a treasure, pure joy to read. As your brain takes in every little, quick moving detail, you never know what's going to happen. Parts where I truly laughed out loud, others that were aw-a-aw sweet. As I always say, cheer up! read a Jen Turano book!

To Spark a Match is yet another amazing Jen Turano book to add to your bookshelf and list of books to read! She has become one of several authors that I feel compelled to add all paperback editions of her books to my shelves because I just need to have them! This book starts with an absolutely stunning cover and continues with a fantastic story between the covers. I always enjoy Jen Turano’s blend of witty banter (which this book has in spades!), romance, and intrigue, usually accompanied by a bit of danger. The characters are always so entertaining and I especially loved Adelaide and Gideon. They played off each other so well and just had me smiling to myself.
Adelaide makes for such a fun, quirky female lead. She really doesn’t fit into society’s mold of a perfect lady. One great thing about this author’s books is that you don’t get stereotypical female leads, which is always so refreshing. No one is perfect so who wants perfect characters? Gideon wasn’t flawless either, but man oh man was he charming. The first chapter of this book did such a great job of setting the stage of the relationship between these two.
One of my favorite parts of this whole book was when Adelaide kept insisting she could handle herself (despite her propensity for getting into trouble) and when push came to shove, she proved she was right. I wish I could really explain more of what I mean but I really don’t want to give away too much and spoil parts of the book! Let’s just say that even if Gideon felt like he needed to come to her rescue, she certainly wasn’t a frail, helpless girl who crumbled under pressure. As with every Jen Turano book I’ve read, I highly encourage reading To Spark a Match. I’m excited for Camilla’s book next!
Are you smooth in a social situation, or do you tend to get into mishaps? The heroine of this story, Miss Adelaide Duveen tends to get into mishaps. She starts the story by causing a scandal when she shows up with her dress accidentally tucked up showing her undergarments which are embroidered with her favorite animal, cats. Adelaide has had five unsuccessful seasons, and it appears that she will remain a spinster with her cats and books. One evening, she stumbles upon Gideon Abbott in the library at a party and realizes that there is something more afoot than just a regular party. Gideon is a former intelligence officer and is on a case. Adelaide causes a distraction for him to be able to make his escape, but it further ruins her reputation. Gideon uses his matchmaking friend Camilla to help Adelaide become fashionable again after this incident. Will Adelaide’s become a diamond of the first water?
To Spark a Match is Book 2 in the matchmakers series after A Beautiful Disguise. A Beautiful Disguise is also a great book and I highly recommend it. You first meet these characters in book one, but you can definitely also read To Spark a Match as a standalone novel.
I loved the humor in this novel. It was fun to read the hijinks and witty banter throughout the novel. There was also mystery and romance. I really enjoyed the Adelaide and Gideon as characters and I loved their development as the story progressed. They had great chemistry and their personalities really complimented each other. I loved Gideon’s job and Adelaide’s involvement in it. It made for fun adventure and intrigue. I mostly really loved that as the novel progressed, Adelaide learned to love herself just as she is.
The setting is Gilded Age New York. I am watching the new season of The Gilded Age and loved the reference to Ward McAllister in the book (he’s a real life person who is a character on The Gilded age).
Favorite Quote: “I believe my propensity for mishaps, my love of books, my lack of proficiency with most feminine arts, my enormous collection of cats, and my questionable fashion sense already sets me worlds apart from the crowd – and not in a favorable manor.”
Overall, To Spark a Match is a delightful novel with humor, mystery, and romance. It’s a great read!
Book Source: Review copy from Bethany House Publishing as a part of the Austenprose PR Book Tour. Thank-you! Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I have read many books by Jen Turano which have made me smile and even laugh. However, this story of Miss Adelaide Duveen and her coiled spring loaded bustle in the first chapter had me in hysterics! Adelaide and Gideon's banter kept me giggling throughout this wonderful book, To Spark a Match, the second in The Matchmakers Series.
Beautifully written with outstanding character development Jen Turano brought to life Adelaide, trying to be accepted by her fellow Knickerbockers for who she was, even though she did not fit into their preconceived mold. In addition to the humor, this book has an outstanding plot line, a mystery with gangsters, and a romance. The faith thread in this book is subdued, but present as Adelaide believed that God had created her for more than to be just a fashionable Knickerbocker. This is definitely my favorite book by Jen Turano thus far.
A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House through Interviews & Reviews. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
Jen Turano did it again!! From the very first page, I am drawn to the unique and quirky Adelaide Duveen! We were introduced to both her and Gideon Abbott in the first book in the series (A Match in the Making), and I was soooo happy to see that they were the main characters in this book! To Spark A Match has everything you,d want in a book - humor, romance and even a healthy dash of suspense and danger! Overall, I give this book 5 stars and I cannot WAIT to read the next one in the Matchmakers series!!
I was given this book in exchange for my honest review.
