Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
We find fugitive stories compelling, especially when said fugitive is falsely accused. So I can understand the intent here. By making the fugitive an animal we can explore the humor of the situation and give the audience emotional distance. And Blabey isn't just trying to be funny. There's a little commentary here on the nature of celebrity and public perception. Of course, it isn't deep. It's all pretty surface level, focused more on ridiculous situations than any meaning. Must frustratingly, there is no resolution. The plot basically just stops, setting us up for the next book. A cliffhanger is fine but the volume should have it's own narrative arc and this one does not.
My eight year old daughter loves the Pig the Pug books so when I saw that Aaron Blabey was putting out a new series it was a must! We read it together and she really enjoyed the story, we laughed out loud many times throughout and are looking for the next one. Princess Beautiful will definitely be a staple in our house now.
Give to anyone who liked the Bad Guys series, Narwhal and Jelly, or even The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza. Fun, quick read.
It's shades of The Fugitive when an internet sensation is set up so that it appears she attempted to start a nuclear war. She then spends the rest of the book on the run from the authorities. I'm a Blabey fan, but this one suffers from a lack of humor, and a bloated action scene that ends in a massive cliffhanger. To be continued, but I don't care enough to continue with this series.
Internet superstar Princess Beautiful is a spoiled, demanding cat who has become famous for her viral videos. When a video is shared that shows her appearing to download the super-secret codes for nuclear weapons that could destroy the world, she instantly goes from the most adored public figure to the most wanted public figure. based on the media's presentation of her actions. Princess Beautiful is forced to go on the run to prove her innocence, with law enforcement in hot pursuit.
Fans of Aaron Blabey’s popular Bad Guys series will be drawn to the similar style found in the Cat on the Run series. Others will be interested based on the internet influencer angle. I think some of the book’s themes, especially those related to the spread of misinformation and internet culture, may go above the heads of the audience who is most likely to reach for this book, but I don’t think that will hamper their enjoyment of the action-filled text. The cliffhanger ending will leave readers excited for the arrival of the next installment of the series. I know this one will be snatched up immediately by my school's Bad Guys fans!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC to read and review.
My 6 year old loves The Bad Guys and was excited to see this new series! It was a cute story and nice to see some familiar faces! We cannot wait for the next book!
I have loved the Bad Guy series since it came out and was very excited to see this new series. From the first chapter of the book I was confused. I understand the character and besides that I don’t know much else. I don’t understand truly, what is going on. First it’s like they like the cat and everything’s fine and they don’t give her a chance to explain anything. I don’t know I guess I just expected it to be more along the lines of the Bad Guys and it’s not.
One of my son's favorite series are The Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey so we were thrilled to receive this ARC e-book from the publisher. The book is about a spoiled and demanding viral sensation Princess Beautiful. She was accused of a crime she didn't commit and went on a run from random people chasing her. She was difficult to like because her behavior/attitude (aka diva personality) is not something I'd hope to be mimicked by my children. My 8 yo son read this pretty quickly and he expressed that it was "okay" and "silly". We both enjoyed the illustrations that are consistent with Aaron's Blabey's artistic style. Although, it wasn't as funny as expected and I did not like that the book felt like it was not completed. We were hoping to have a bit of an outcome or resolution, but now we will have to wait for Book #2. The action scenes also seemed to be a bit chaotic.
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Bad Guys comes another hilarious illustrated series starring a pampered cat who is way tougher than anyone realizes.
What happens when the world's biggest cat video star gets accused of a crime she didn’t commit? She becomes a cat on the run, that’s what.
But how do you avoid capture and prove your innocence when you are the most famous feline on the planet? Well, it ain’t easy.
Follow Princess Beautiful -- for that is her name -- as she goes from meme megastar #1 to public enemy #1 and cheer her on as she fights to clear her name.
Is she a super villain? An internet-famous buffoon? Or a butt-kicking gal who's just been seriously underestimated?
YOU be the judge...
I am a BIG fan of Aaron Blabey. I have all the Pig the Pug and Thelma the Unicorn books to read to my daughter so when I saw this I was SO excited to get the Arc.
This is an excellent graphic novel. I really enjoyed it and always look forward to Aarons wit that he portrays in every one of his books.
Definitely check this one out!
Viral Video Spoof
The new Aaron Blabey series has a great premise. Princess Beautiful is an internet sensation starring in viral funny cat videos. When she is framed by a mysterious organization her latest video makes it seem that she is uploading nuclear rocket codes. She is labeled as "The cat of Death". The number one video star becomes the number one wanted criminal and she soon becomes a "Cat on the Run". The book spoofs the whole internet influencer phenomenon and teaches kids to be weary of the idea that "if it is on the internet, it must be true."
The illustrations have crisp line art and grey tone shading that are typical of Aaron Blabey's art style. Unfortunately, the humor does not reach the same bar set by his "The Bad Guys" series. The protagonist is spoiled, shallow and demanding. Hardly the likeable character that one would hope for in a book aimed at youngsters. The chase scenes in the second half of the book are chaotic. After reading about this author, I was expecting more humor.
Sence kids are glued to their devise screens entirely too much, they will enjoy the book and hopefully learn a lesson about social media along the way. The book is aimed at readers in grades 2-5 but could also be enjoyed by younger kids at Storytime.
I am a huge fan of Aaron Blabey, and I have all of his books in my library. They are all clever and humorously illustrated, and my students love them. However, I did not feel as if this book was up to the standard of his previous books. The premise - an Internet star gets accused of doing something she didn't based on something that was misinterpreted in one of her videos - is certainly indicative of the way the world works now. Indeed, throughout the book Blabey pokes fun at this idea by repeatedly stating some version of, "The Internet said it, so it must be true". I did like Blabey's subtle nods to his other books, but it just got repetitive and silly for me about halfway through. I felt like it was all just different people chasing Princess Beautiful, only for her to escape and then start to be chased by someone else. The cliffhanger ending also didn't sit well with me because it seems like a ploy to get readers to purchase book 2 when it comes out, without there being any actual payoff for having finished book 1. It would be one thing if this book had a complete closed arc with then a larger arc spanning the entire series, but that is not what we got here.
I will still likely get it for my library because I think my students will enjoy it, but it was definitely not my favorite.
Thank you to Scholastic and NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of "Cat on the Run in Cat of Death!" by Aaron Blabey in exchange for an honest review.
Princess Beautiful is the star of all those Internet cat memes you've ever enjoyed. She wears funny outfits! She does silly cat things! But behind the scenes, she's a spoiled diva, as much as an entitled brat as her name would imply. She mistreats her staff and makes impossible demands, all while trying garner as many clicks and views as her videos can attract.
Until.... she is framed for accessing the codes for the world's nuclear weapons! A secret organization hacks her computer at the exact moment when she's filming her latest silly cat video, and once the video premieres online, sharp eyes notice what's on her screen (note: she herself never saw it.) She's immediately labeled The Cat of Death, a threat to the entire world, and every law enforcement officer is out to find her.
This was a fun, zany, far-out book. The artwork is classically Blabey with expressive linework, gray tones, and pops of color for emphasis. This story is clearly the setup for a longer series, so it ends on a cliffhanger.
The humor is whacky and exaggerated for kids, but I think adults will enjoy it too. (Apart from the blatant skewering of influencer culture, a lawman mouse does a version of Tommy Lee Jones's speech from the 1993 film The Fugitive. That's clearly not intended for people born in the last decade.) I would expect fans of The Bad Guys to enjoy this one, also.
This will be another hit for Blabey, and kids who have eaten up his Bad Guys series will love this. A must purchase for me.
Another sure to be classic from Mr. Blabey! In the same universe as his Bad Guys phenomenon, Tiffany Fluffit continues to report the news worth knowing! My elementary schoolers are going to love this addition!
This was a very cute and funny story with adorable illustrations. My son (10yo) loves books like these and really enjoyed this. Thank you net galley for the ARC! Would recommend!
Title: Cat on the Run - A Purrfectly Fun Cat Caper!!
There's plenty for young readers to love in this silly, over the top cat caper by Bad Guys author Aaron Blabey. From the moment we meet #1 feline and social media star Princess Beautiful, we understand that who she is online is not, in fact, who she is in real life. She wants power and fame and will do anything to get more likes and clicks so she can catapult her way to #1. No stunt is too over the top or too silly for Princess Beautiful as long as the public continues to adore her. However, as many social media stars discover, there’s sometimes a price to pay for chasing all those likes and clicks.
When Princess Beautiful posts something that freaks out her fans, she goes viral for all the wrong reasons and becomes the victim of cancel culture. This purrific action-packed adventure is cleverly disguised as a silly cat and mouse romp, but makes for a strong commentary on the madness of social media and, of course, cancel culture. Those themes may be lost on younger readers, but older readers will surely giggle at Aaron Blabey’s brilliant take on the pitfalls of social media and how quickly things can spiral out of control.
"Cat on the Run" takes a good-natured swipe at our collective obsession with chasing approval from a public we don’t even know and is an enjoyable read to boot!
Princess adds a new element to our cast of characters by Blabey. Perhaps not a bad guy but not a great person? I am excited to she how she will change throughout this series. I'm wondering if we will see any of our favorite bad guys characters. I think the idea of what can happen with the internet was a great concept to introduce to kids and it was done by way of a really fun story.
This is great for those who already love the Bad Guys or anyone who is looking for a new graphic novel. My 7 year old and I both loved it.
Thank You to NetGalley, Scholastic Paperbacks, and Aaron Blabey,
I loved his series The Bad Guys and loved this new series Cat on the Run just as much. Princess Beautiful is one top, pampered, starlet cat. One day Princess Beautiful is on top of the world and the next she is on the run. Many think she's a criminal, but did she really commit? Will she be able to prove her innocence?
I loved Princess Beautiful. She certainly has catitude like most cats especially mine. Mine is a bit less pampered, but how do cats survive on their own. It was a quick easy entertaining read. Kids and adults a like will like this series. Recommended for The Bad Guys fans, cat lovers, those who like graphic novels, and a little mystery.
Thank you NetGalley and Scholastic for providing an advance copy for review.
I am a fan of Bad Guys and my students love the books as well. It is great to see a new series that also incorporates characters from the Bad Guys series. I am not sure if younger kids will understand some parts of the story (internet culture) but there is enough action and comedy to keep them reading.
