A good story with an interesting plot and such characters that you won't know who to believe. Some good twists culminate in a decent ending.
I will read anything written by JP Delaney. I stayed up so late to finish this one because I couldn't put it down. Was gripping right up until the end! Absolutely recommend!
A good story with an interesting plot. Cleverly written so you are not sure who to believe. Some great twists to conclude with a great ending.
I will read anything JP Delaney writes and this one is true to form, twisty and intriguing.
You can't go wrong with a JP Delaney holiday read and I particularly loved the ending of this one - it felt much more new and fresh than a lot I've read from Delaney.
Well what a fun read- so twisty with an unreliable narrator! I really didn’t know what to believe as I read the book and even when I got to the very last page I still didn’t know what to think!
Brother and sister, Finn and Jess get the news that their father has died in Majorca, leaving his third wife widowed. Neither has much love for him and Finn particularly, who is the narrator, seems estranged. He describes him with an unflattering acronym and all the reader learns about the father leads one to believe he was not a particularly nice man.
Jess tells Finn to fly over to claim their inheritance, a run down old villa in the mountains. Reluctantly he complies but on arrival finds it has been beautifully renovated and is being inhabited by his widow and her attractive daughter, Roze. Ruensa and Roze insist that Finn stays with them and therein begins a series of half truths and lies. Finn does not know what to believe and nor does the reader. However it becomes abundantly clear that there is much about Finn, the narrator, that we do not know,
This story is very cleverly woven and definitely kept me on my toes trying to work out what was going on and who to believe. The characters were well portrayed and the scenery of the island beautifully described.
Having said that I didn’t really like any of the characters, they all seemed to have something to hide and their motivations were difficult to fathom.
If you like books that are cleverly plotted psychological thrillers, you’ll definitely like “The New Wife” I was reading it over a wet weekend but it would lend itself to be a perfect holiday read.
When I read the afterword from the author I discovered that they had been inspired by a Daphne Du Maurer novel, My Cousin Rachel, and this did not surprise me. JP Delaney has definitely captured the style of one of my favourite classic writers.
I recommend this as a five star read and certainly a novel to tuck in your suitcase if you are off on holiday!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my advance copy.
An enjoyable beach read thriller with a good twist and well-developed characters.
Read it if: you like to second-guess your narrator.
Don’t read it if: you want likeable characters.
When Jimmy Hensen dies at his dilapidated Mallorcan farmhouse, it’s down to his estranged son, Finn, to visit Jimmy’s devastated third wife and step-daughter to secure his inheritance. When he arrives to a warm welcome from his step-relatives and a transformed farmhouse with a new business purpose, he begins to fall in love with the place and his new family. Despite his sister (who remains in England) hurrying him along to kick the women out so they can sell the property, Jimmy becomes enthralled by his new simple lifestyle and company.
The turn that this novel took was completely unexpected, so much so that I would probably re-read with a fresh perspective on these characters. I would recommend as a compelling summer read.
With thanks to Quercus Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When Finn Hensen receives a call from his siter Jess informing him of their father s death it is decided that he will travel to Mallorca to sort his estate, the only problem being that his father has recently married for the third time and it is not as straight forward as they thought
What begins is years of deceit, betrayal and secrets surfacing in a fast paced one sitting read
Thank you Netgalley and Quercus books for this very gripping ,hard to put down read
It’s definitely fast paced like most JP Delaney novels! The beginning starts off a bit slow but then it does pick up and I enjoyed the twists. But compared to some of the authors previous novels it didn’t quite reach the same level for me. Still worth a read though!
Wow! I raced through this book today. I totally loved - if “loved”is the right word - the characters, and was amazed by the storyline.
I wasn’t surprised at all to read at the end it was my favourite Daphne du Maurier book - My Cousin Rachel - that gave the author the idea.
A totally compulsive read.
I'm a huge fan of the author's previous work and so jumped at the chance to read this. It was a little slow to start with but when the twist came I forgave the slowness and the wondering what was going on as it was building to its climax. It's very cleverly written and it all makes sense in the end as everything is woven through like thread to complete a tapestry. A great read for your summer holiday!
Thank you NetGalley and Quercus Books for this ARC.
Finn travels to Spain after the death of his father fully expecting to collect on the family inheritance. Instead, he finds his father's 3rd wife and daughter living in the residence with no place to go.
I generally enjoy JP Delaney's books and I did this one too, but perhaps not as much as past books.
It ramped up midway through and there were some nice little twists that I didn't expect.
A dark and twisty thriller from the king of surprises J P Delaney. Each book has been slightly different, always twisted and this is no exception
I have read ALL of JP Delaney’s books and am a huge fan. I love the writing style and the flow of the narrative in all her books. However, I have to say, I enjoyed this one the least and was left disappointed. Found the plot weak and it did not hold me interest, and as a result found it quite a plod.
Will still look forward to her next book.
Thank you NetGalley and the Publishers for this ARC.
JP Delaney’s books never disappoint and The New Wife was no exception. The plot is creative, well executed, and has a slow burn pace without ever dragging or losing its grip
On the reader. The characters were extremely well written and I was invested very quickly. Definitely a must read of the summer!
Always love a JP Delaney book - they've always been proper page-turners.
This one was no exception!
It really built momentum, the whole time having a real sense of 'doom' about it. Delaney's writing is always so filmic, and just like their other books, I felt like I was watching it play-out and not just reading it. I would put money on this book being picked up by Netflix - if it hasn't already.
The overall plot is really simple, but the way it is told is just so gripping. Simple plot. Executed well.
Would be great beach read!!
Another hit from J P Delaney!!
‘Your place in the sun comes with a problem’ - cover tag line.
My thanks to Quercus Books for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The New Wife’ by JP Delaney.
Having read a number of Delaney’s previous thrillers, I was confident that this would prove to be another gripping page-turner. It was and I ended reading it in a single day.
Finn Hensen receives a call gets a call from his sister Jess telling him that their father, Jimmy, has died. Neither sibling is heartbroken as their parents had divorced many years ago and they had a strained relationship with him. After they left their father had continued living a bohemian lifestyle in sun-soaked Mallorca.
On his death ownership of Finca Siquia, his beautiful but dilapidated farmhouse in the mountains, will now pass to Finn and his sister. However, Jimmy had recently remarried and his new wife, Ruensa, is still living there.
It is agreed that Finn will travel to Mallorca and tactfully take possession of their inheritance. On arrival Finn is surprised to find that considerable renovations have been undertaken. Finn also finds himself drawn to Ruensa’s 27-year-old daughter, Roze. Meanwhile, the Spanish police are starting to ask awkward questions about Jimmy's death . . . No further details to avoid spoilers.
In his Author’s Note Delaney says that this novel was inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s 1951 classic Gothic novel, ‘My Cousin Rachel’. I could definitely see resonances between them.
Overall, I found ‘The New Wife’ an engaging Gothic thriller that well utilises its beautiful Mediterranean setting. Sure to be a popular summer read,
A great suspenseful thriller. It has numerous twists and turns culminating in the final unexpected ending.
Unusual tale set in Mallorca. Finn goes to Mallorca when his estranged father is found dead at his villa. His new wife and her daughter are at the villa. Finn sets our to find out what happened. Is it an unfortunate accident or something more sinister?
A gripping tale full of twists and turns, showing how different perspectives can colour your view of the facts. Full of twists.
The Mallorcan finca setting was absolutely what I needed to escape a dreary London July. A fun, fast, lush read!
I love this author and this one was written well. Enjoyed the scenery and the notion of the mystery! Was different for the murder to be announced and then the story, but overall a decent read.
