The New Wife by J P Delaney is another successful psychological thriller by the author, the storyline of this book is set in Mallorca. The estranged father of Finn Henson and his sister Jess has died and the ownership of his dilapidated farmhouse in the mountains now pass to Finn and his sister.
The only problem is the father recently remarried for the third time and his wife Ruensa is still living there. The two siblings agree that Finn should go there and get the wife and her daughter to agree to the sale of the property and that they will move on.
However when Finn arrives at the property Finca Sinquia has been compiler transformed by Ruensa and her daughter, 27 year old Roze. The Spanish police are asking questions about Jimmy’s death and Finn doesn’t know whether the two of them are victims of circumstance or whether they are responsible for his father’s death.
He decides to stay and find out for himself and then gets swept up in events that will have repercussions for all four of the people involved in Finca Sinquia.
Highly recommended

JP Delaney is an auto read for me so I was beyond excited to jump into his latest offering, The New Wife. While the first half was quite the slow burn it quickly became a twisty thriller that had me flipping pages long into the night. In true Delaney style nothing was quite what it seemed as we followed the story of siblings who had lost their distant father and were ready to claim their inheritance. Add to the mix a new wife and step daughter and things start to take one strange turn after another. The New Wife is an engaging read and one that I enjoyed, thank you to Quercus Books for the early reading copy.

Jess a d Finn's father has died. However neirher.kf them are very upset about it. They were never close to him after he disappeared and had no contact with them for several years. However they have to go to Mallorca to settle some legal issues. One of them being the ramshackle farmhouse he has left them both in his will. They agree that they just want to sell the farmhouse and split the money equally to just be able to put their father out of their minds. However when they arrive there they find out that their fathers latest wife is still living there. Finn agrees to go to Mallorca to try and get their fathers wife to move out. When Finn gets there he runs into Ruensa and Roze. Who both helped transform the farmhouse into what it is today, who also live at the house. Finn feels bad that he has to tell them to leave, and also the police start looking into the events leading up to their fathers death.

The book is good and well written, there are secrets to keep you guessing throughout.

I really struggled to get into this book, I didn't like the characters and the plot line dragged to start with and then became hap hazard and difficult to read.
The narrator was unreliable and i think i would have preferred it if they were more upfront about their obsessive tendencies.
Despite the slow start the last quarter felt rushed and a bit messy leaving the reader with unanswered questions.
I really enjoyed The Girl Before so had high hopes for this book, but sadly it did not stack up.
Having said that it would not put me off reading the next JP Delaney book and i did enjoy the beautiful descriptions of the area and could really picture the scenery which is what i needed on a torrentially rainy summers day in England.

When his father dies, Finn travels out to Mallorca to assess the house he and his sister have inherited. Dilapidated, even when they lived there as children, he is surprised by the improvements made in the last year by his father’s third wife and his daughter, who are still in residence.

I really enjoyed Playing Nice, so I was happy to take The New Wife On. The first part, as Finn tries to establish whether Ruensa and Roze are genuine, was improbable, but I read on in expectation of twists and explosions only to end up sadly disappointed as improbable became ridiculous.
Many readers will, and have liked this one.

I loved this book and read it over the space of 24 hours as I couldn’t put it down! Finn and Jess are set to inherit a Finca in Mallorca now that their father has died. He couldn’t pay their mother any divorce money so left the house to the children instead as long as he could live in it until his death. Theirs was not a normal upbringing as their parents, especially their father, were very bohemian. Now the sale of the Finca is complicated by their father’s new wife and her grown up daughter.
A great thriller with unexpected twists and turns.

I am a big fan of this author’s work,i’m always impressed by his unique take and imagination.

Finn received a phone call from his sister Jess to inform him that their estranged father has died. They are expecting to inherit what they believe to be a run down property in Mallorca as that was the agreement instead of a divorce settlement when their parents separated.

Finn goes out to Mallorca to find that the Spanish police are asking questions about his father’s death.

It has more of a domestic suspense feel than a thriller. The setting is great, almost a character in its own right.

You think that you know exactly where the book is heading, but no, there’s twists. It felt too slow paced for me.
I was a bit disappointed with this one. Not sure how I felt about the ending either, it’s quite open.

Finn receives a phone call from his sister Jess to inform him that their estranged father has died. Their father lived in Spain with his new wife and her daughter in a property which now according to his will and a previous arrangement reverts to belonging to Finn and Jess. Jess nominates Finn to travel to Spain to inform their new stepmother and stepsister that they will be selling their house. When he arrives in Spain the local police inform Finn they have suspicions about how his father died. As Finn extends his stay in Spain does he believe that his stepmother and stepsister had something to do with his fathers death or does he believe it was an accident.
Good psychological thriller with twists and turns.

Jess Hensen calls her brother, Finn, to inform him that the "Old Bastard" has died. The Old Bastard referred to being their father. Neither brother nor sister are upset by the news, having had an unconventional childhood to say the least, and no contact with their father for several years. However, there are legalities to deal with.

Their father lived in Mallorca, in a ramshackle farmhouse, which he bequeathed jointly to Jess and Finn on his death. Jess just wants to sell the farmhouse and split the money between them. Finn agrees, until finding out that his fathers latest wife still lives there, and wonders if this could cause problems with selling up. The two of them agree that Finn will go out to Mallorca to see if the wife knows that the farmhouse is not hers and she will have to move out.

Finn arrives in Mallorca, meets Ruensa and her daughter, Roze, and is amazed at how transformed the farmhouse is, due to the hard work of these two women. Finn starts to feel guilty about telling them they have to leave after they have spent money on the property, and then there is the added complication of the police looking into the death of Finns father, stating suspicious circumstances.

This is a real page turner, where nothing and no one are what or who they appear to be. It kept me guessing right up to the end. A thrilling read.

Your place in the sun comes with a problem.

After the death of their father siblings Finn and Jess inherit his farmhouse but they didn’t expect it to come with a step mother and sister included. Jess wants to kick them out and sell straight away but Finn starts to have other ideas as he grown close to his new family.

This was a book of two halves for me, I really enjoyed the first half but when a big twist came towards the end I lost interest and started to skip read the final chapters. Thanks to @netgalley and @quercusbooks for the opportunity to read this book.

The New Wife is a standalone psychological thriller by author, JP. Delaney. I’ve read this author before and this one was my favorite so far. I enjoyed JP Delaney’s adept writing style and the unique Mediterranean setting. This one left me feeling turned inside out and upside down the rabbit hole on a rollercoaster of suspense and twists. I had no idea where this one was going but I was eager to find out. I finished it in one sitting. JP Delaney knows how to write an original and engrossing thriller. This one won’t be my last by this author. The idealistic setting, naïve main character and romance elements leave us unsure who to trust in this one where everything seems just a little bit off. I enjoyed having the rug swept out from under me. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Thank you NetGalley and Quercus Books for my ARC of ‘The New Wife.’

I was super excited to get started with this read and eager to see which route the story would take. However, it just didn’t hit the way I was hoping it would. It took a while to get into and although the middle became more fast paced and interesting, it unfortunately dropped again towards the end. Personally, it felt like it ends suddenly without the full plot being wrapped up… like there’s something missing. But some people enjoy that! I found there was too much going on, for the plot to end the way it did; unless of course, it was intendedly kept open to become a duology.

Although the overall pace was questionable, I did enjoy and would recommend to thriller and suspense fans. It had twists and turns and for the most part is immersive. A success of this book is the setting imagery and description; you really get a feel for the environment, which really helps place this book within its intended genre.

3.5/5.

I absolutely love this author and was so excited to read this new book.

The book is a tale of deception and it beautifully hides this until you find that you have been lured into the author’s trap! All is not as innocent as it seems!

And once you realise that the twists and unreliable narration keeps coming!

A great read but sadly for me it was not the author’s best. I get the point of leaving the ending open to interpretation, but it just isn’t a satisfying ending. From the point of the brain injury on it lost a bit of its momentum. I hoped Jess’ return might prompt another twist but it was not to be.

I have enjoyed the other books by this author but this was not on the same level. Far too slow and am I afraid not thrilling at all. I found the ending implausible and rushed .I would definitely read the next book as I usually enjoy this writer. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.

I’m very grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to preview this book. However, I’m disappointed to report that, for me, it was a bit of a bland ‘ok’ read.

A brother and sister find out that their estranged father has died, leaving them a Finca in Mallorca. In their childhood this had been a run down, miserable place. However, when Finn, the brother visits to begin probate he’s surprised to find a charming, characterful property with adjacent pool and farmland, all maintained by his father’s new wife and her daughter. What follows is a frustrating tug of war between Finn and his sister, Jess who is in the Uk and desperate for the sale to progress and the new stepsister who Finn has taken a shine to.

It’s a bit of a meander, with a very slow pace. There is an element that kept me reading and it’s a decent ending, so, all in all an OK read.

Book Review 📚
The New Wife by J.P Delaney - 4/5 ⭐

No my first book by Delaney and certainly will not be my last. There's always something happening that you want expect as well as being full on with the twists and turns. It's unnaturally good!

Towards the end of the book it takes such a drastic shift, the whole plot you thought you had figured out will be massively incorrect! Predictable just isn't a thing for Delaney, I'm always second guessing and thinking something's gonna shift, then I always put to much thought into it but it keeps me on my toes.

The book is massive slow burner but that doesn't make it boring. If anything it keeps you intrigued and trying your best to piece everything together. The writing, as always, is phenomenal and the author has such a way with words.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quercus Books for allowing me to read this ARC - this is an HONEST review from my own personal opinion.

I was very excited to review J.P. Delaneys new book. I enjoyed the book as it flowed nicely and there wasn’t too many characters to get to know. I actually read the book quite quickly because I wanted to find out how the story was going to unravel and end. The ending was a little bit crazy and I was left with questions on how the ending came about. I still enjoyed the book and would recommend others to read it still.

After an interesting set up and a well drawn sense of place this book couldn't live up to its promise. Delaney did a good job of keeping the reader unsure as to the motivations of Roze and her mother and his writing is engaging but there were too many implausible actions and decisions made by the characters to really be able to enjoy the story..
My thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for an advance review copy.

I've enjoyed other books by this author and for the most part, I found this to be engrossing until we got to the 75% mark where there was a big shift in perception about what was happening and after that, I didn't enjoy it as much. A good read, wasn't keen on the ending as there were a lot of questions unanswered. However, the setting is fantastic and it's worth reading for that alone!
