Sleeping with Friends is a mystery where Mia has woken up after an attempted murder or accident with no idea what happened. Her friends decide the best thing to do is throw her a “remembering” party. But what if the attempted killer is one of them?
I liked the premise but I really did not like any of the characters. They were all very stereotypical-think a lesbian who is in love with Mia, an ex still in love with her.
Overall, this book fell flat for me.
Sleeping With Friends by Emily Schultz
Murder mystery/whodunnit.
2/5 ⭐️
Imagine waking up from a coma/head trauma with no recollection of what happened or who your friends are. Now imagine being in the same house with those friends while they try to solve the whodunnit of what happened to you.
This book was VERY campy with niche anecdotes with replaying of old movie scenes being the way the main characters memories resurface. I understood very few of these in the way intended because I’ve never studied film.
I stuck with it because I needed to see if my prediction on whodunnit was correct. (It was, for those of you keeping score 😎).

This sounded promising but it just didn't hit with me. The plot was okay but the writing wasn't great. Didn't love the characters. Overall kind of meh. Sorry!!
Unfortunately, I really wanted to enjoy this book.. but it was a struggle. The characters felt underdeveloped and messy. The plot was not clear and tough to understand with the change in view points. I wanted to love this as much as I loved Knives Out but the humor and writing did not flow.
This book was interesting, but not my favorite. I will likely try the author again. I love the cover art, it’s perfect.
Thank you to the author, Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very disjointed story, with POVs and timings all over the place. The main plot point - Mia's accident - completely goes under in the chaos of the other characters sniping at/feuding with one another. Overall, very unrealistic and not at all credible, and a chore to read.
Sleeping with Friends by Emily Schultz is a fast paced suspense novel that will have you reevaluating any long standing friendships.
I love the concept of Sleeping with Friends; Mia is in a coma after what may have been an attempt on her life or a slip and fall accident. When she comes to, one of her college friends, Agnes, suggests a rememoring party. Mainly so Mia can remember all the good things about Agnes, but also so they can solve a possible attempted murder.
All the elements of a good whodunnit were there, and as I mentioned before, it is a fast paced book, but it still dragged at times for me in regards to not caring too much about any of the characters.
They were well written, but they all seemed like entitled brats. I know that is how most of them were supposed to come across, and one of the themes is even, would you still be friends with some of the people you met in high school or college if you met them today, but when I can’t connect with the characters, I can’t connect with the book. The only one that I kind of cared about what happened to her was Agnes, so I’m glad she came to some of the realizations she did by the end of the book.
Towards the end when new people suddenly appeared the book seemed to take a bit of a whacky turn to me. The next death seemed to be there just to try and add some suspense.
If you’re in the mood for some mindless fun, and you enjoy reading about people who could use a good dose of therapy, Sleeping with Friends may be just what you are looking for.
If it wasn't for a few things, this would of rated much higher as the mystery itself is actually kind of good.. if you can get past how it's delivered and it's complete lack of believability.
Sleeping with Friends is book one in the Friends and Enemies series by Emily Schultz.
I had fun reading this book. I thought it was a great mystery and it held my attention throughout the whole story.
The characters are interesting and the story moves at a nice pace.
Thank You NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
This was one of the oddest books I've ever read just because it was discordant and supposed to about friends but everyone was awful. I kind of already blocked this out of my head because I just didn't like it. It's odd too that this is a series because I just wanted it to end; in fact, one of the best things about this was that it was a short and fast read. I hope you have better luck!
Sleeping with Friends comes out next month on January 1, 2024, and you can purchase HERE.
Mia was everyone's wife. When you were with Mia, she was more than present. She was yours-there for you in a way no one else was. She looked into your eyes the whole time you were talking. She heard you and knew just what you needed, even when you didn't. In Agnes's opinion, Mia Sinclair was the most sincere and generous person she'd ever met-so smart, so beautiful, with a sense of humor that could wilt anyone who underestimated her. It was that bond that happens only when you're in your early twenties, when you meet a friend and know: This is the girl I would die for. This is the person I'm meant to know forever. That's why it was a shock when Mia actually did get married, as if the vows of friendship meant nothing anymore.
As a woman recovers from an attempted murder that resulted in brain loss, she can’t help but feel one of the friends helping her recover is also responsible for trying to kill her.
I liked the premise here, but the writing felt contrived, especially for a mystery. It just felt like too much in many areas.
just didn’t get all the references in this book to old movies, directors, actors, etc. There was very little to engage me, and never a point where I just had to finish it as is usually the case. I
This was a hard no for me. It’s called like Finlay Donovan but it def did not give that and I don’t think I’ll ever read anything by this author again.
Sleeping with Friends by Emily Schultz is an intriguing and suspenseful novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story revolves around Mia Sinclair-Kroner, who wakes up from a coma with no memory of her past, except for the movies she loves. Her college friends gather together to help her remember, but it soon becomes clear that Mia's accident may not have been an accident at all.
As old wounds are reopened, tensions rise and suspicions mount. Mia's friends must navigate their shared history and film knowledge to figure out who among them might be responsible for her accident. Was it Agnes, whose hidden resentments have been festering for years? Or Zoey, who has always coveted Mia's life? Could the years apart have caused Ethan to turn violent? Or did Victor, who moved away, return with a hidden agenda? And what about Martin, Mia's wealthy husband, who has put a country estate between her and her past?
The writing in Sleeping with Friends is captivating, with well-developed characters and a plot that keeps you guessing until the very end. The author does an excellent job of weaving together the different storylines and characters, creating a complex web of relationships and motivations.
Overall, Sleeping with Friends is a must-read for anyone who loves a good mystery. It is a thrilling and suspenseful novel that will keep you guessing until the very end. Emily Schultz is a talented writer, and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
I wanted more smoothness in the telling of this story, though the premise was promising - of a woman with amnesia and her friends who are supposedly helping her regain her memories.
There were way too many references to movies and shows that many readers may not know about and therefore get lost or not follow the storyline.
Mia is suffering from memory loss and her friends want to help her. I found the characters harder to connect with and the slower pace of this had me losing interest.
Well written characters with a good twist. Definitely something I would recommend to others, but would not be the top of my list. Just something to throw in on a weekend.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the arc! This was such an interesting whodunit. As an avid consumer of mysteries and thrillers the premise of this captivated me and I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. I’ll be on the lookout for more from this author,
I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
This one fell flat for me -- couldn't connect with characters or get interested in the story I was being told. I appreciate receiving an ARC for early review, and hope that this book finds its audience.
