JoyReaderGirl1 graciously thanks NetGalley, Author Mignon Fogarty, and Publisher St. Martin's Press | St. Martin's Griffin for this advanced reader copy for review.
I have followed the Grammar Girl for quite some time and her little snippets of information have always been incredibly helpful. I was eager to read and review this book. I found it easy to navigate and her tips and examples are so helpful as usual.
Although it is set up as a tip-of-the-day type book, it also makes an exceptional reference book to keep handy. Grammar is something that even the most educated can continue to improve and having this at your fingertips will help you communicate better.
Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion. I gave it five stars.
As a grammar nerd and educator, I thought this was a great book! Lots of great tips here that will really help people!
The Grammar Daily is well-organized and easy to use for quick reference when writing. The examples it provides are great, and the information is relayed in easy-to-digest, memorable nuggets. It is a wonderful resource I will continue to use in my editing and writing work. I highly recommend keeping a copy of this book handy, whether in a digital or print format. I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy!
I am a grammar nerd, so I absolutely loved this book and learned a lot from the myriad tips (there’s one in action in this sentence). However, I thought this would be better as a daily calendar, Twitter series, or text tips, rather than a book, and I thought the Kindle format did not work for me at all. I enjoyed reading it through, but I feel like it’s going to be hard to remember the tips and refer back to them in the future.
If you're a devoted listener of the Grammar Girl podcast, you will have heard many of these tidbits before. But if you haven't, or you need a refresher, this is a super handy little book. It's especially great for teachers to have a fact of the day to share and start a discussion.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
As an editor/proofreader and a home educator, Grammar Girl is a must. This book is a great resource for not only work, but also my high schooler's lessons. I plan to purchase my son an actual copy!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to review this book.
The Grammar Daily by Mignon Fogarty is such a wonderful resource for writers to read in one fell swoop or as a daily grammatical devotional. This would be a wonderful daily tips text.
Thank you to the author, editor, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
As someone who works in the communications industry, this book is an absolute must! It was so helpful getting a refresher on some of writing rules that can be easy to forget. This guide makes it easy to understand and hard to forget - will be recommending to all of my colleagues!
I am familiar with this author. This will be a priceless reference for anyone learning the English language.
This was a lovely reference book. Clear and organised. Good examples. Fun and light hearted with lots of good info.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this digital ARC. This is my honest review:
I was delighted to find the grammar tips within The Grammar Daily so bite-sized that they're generally a paragraph each. I enjoyed this book as a quick daily read. The author approaches grammar as an entertaining topic, even including some puzzles to add variety.
Many of us last studied grammar as part of college composition courses. It's an essential skill we use daily, whether as professional writers or in everyday communications. The Grammar Daily provides a fun, compelling way to update one's grammar skills.
Thank you to the author, publisher and netgalley for this digital ARC.
5/5 stars. I appreciate a book like this that is quick and easy to read of reference. Found it to be very helpful but would appreciate more as a paperback than digital for quick reference.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC
Thanks, NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin, for the Digital Review Copy.
I admit to leaning heavily on Grammarly Premium to correct my grammar. An annual subscription is worth it if you write regularly (e.g., reviews, emails, essays, blog posts). I also have mine set to catch errors on social media posts and comments.
But you can't beat Grammar Girl when it comes to the WHY of Grammar and handy mnemonics to remember the rules. I already have two of her books (tabbed and highlighted) on my “keep forever” shelf and need to add this one, too. I read it as an e-book, which was great for convenience and reference, but I’d like a paper copy for the games and quizzes.
This is an updated (from 2009) version of Fogarty’s Tip-A-Day formatted collection of grammar tips, tricks, history, and games. Each nugget is fun, memorable, and worthwhile; I’ve enjoyed working through them. (I’d love to have this as a page-a-day calendar!)
Practical, helpful, well-referenced, and up-to-date (she covers using “they” as a singular pronoun), you need this on your forever shelf if you teach, write, or try to communicate effectively and accurately!
(I hope I don’t have any errors in this review. If I do, and you catch them, congratulations! You passed my test, and I will send you a sticker.)
I like it! I’m an editor and have read many books related to grammar. This one is different from most, in that it’s a quick read each day with little tidbits of knowledge.
Four and a half stars. Back when I was new to podcasts, Grammar Girl's was one of the first ones that I listened to. I haven't listened for years but was happy to have a chance to read her new book. Her voice has remained consistent for all these years - bringing a cheeky and clever tone to what most people consider a pretty dry topic. I did not read this as it was intended (reading one entry a day) but I think that would probably be a nice experience, especially if you had the print copy. I learned some new things, remembered a few things I had forgotten and reinforced a few things that I already knew. My one qualm is that the book often talks about American vs British style, without even mentioning Canadian. (It would have been enough to say that Canadian usually but does not always follow British and that the book wasn't going to cover it.) Overall would recommend to other grammar nerds, beginner, intermediate or advanced.
You can't use this book to replace your actual grammar aids. This book is for fun and entertainment. Entertainment? Grammar as entertainment? 100%.
This book consists of daily entries so that you can spend a year reading an entry a day. The tone is light, and the topics are interesting. Even as someone who has studied languages a lot, there were things I wasn't aware of.
There are also word searches so that you can interact more as you go.
Thanks so much to NetGalley for letting me read this
Throw away the grammatically incorrect and pick up the "write" stuff! In a tip-a-day form, the popular Grammar Girl offers 365 lessons on language in the revised and updated edition of The Grammar Daily. It includes writing tips, quizzes and memory tricks to help improve grammar and writing one day at a time.
I feel like if you've read one Grammar Daily, you've read them all. I recommend this updated edition to Bookhearts that are writers, editors and proofreaders to use as a refresher guide. For those new to Grammar Girl, download the podcast and this eBook for practical easy-to-remember advice about style and usage. It is a daily devotional we can all use!
Happy Pub Day, Mignon Fogarty! The Grammar Daily: 365 Quick Tips for Successful Writing from Grammar Girl is now available.
Disclaimer: An advance copy was received directly from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are my own and would be the same if I spent my hard-earned coins. ~LiteraryMarie
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
Thanks to "the Grammar Girl" for this engaging guidance manual that is engagingly written.
As a professional technical writer with decades of experience, I can attest that anyone in the professional workplace (or anyone looking to polish their writing skills) should have a copy of this reference on their desk!
This short book on rules of grammar covers the basics plus some but the explanations seemed rather dry to me. I was expecting fun in both explanations and examples but found the opposite. Yes, very short chapters of just one page but they were quite dry. Was a DNF for me. However, if someone truly needed guidance, this book should help.
